All common questions about the game should be directed here. This includes both single-player and online questions. If you're not sure if you should use a spoiler tag or not, err on the side of caution and use one. Also, it's a nice gesture to visibly indicate the general nature of your spoiler before the tag, so people know what you're spoiling.

Discussion I recreated the 1899 Cracked Wheat with Milk from RDR2 — it was way more complicated than I expected.

While hanging around Rhodes, I ordered the Cracked Wheat with Milk, and noticed something odd: the bowl served in the game has this distinct yellow layer on top. When I looked up pictures of regular cracked wheat with milk online, they were all completely white.

That yellow layer immediately reminded me of "Nairiji" (traditional skin milk/clotted cream) I had in Inner Mongolia—that rich skin that forms on top when freshly milked, boiled milk cools down.

So, I did some digging.

The milk we buy at supermarkets today goes through homogenization. It's a purely mechanical process where milk is forced through tiny holes at high pressure to break fat globules into smaller particles so they stay evenly dispersed. This gives modern milk a smooth, uniform texture, but it also makes it nearly impossible to form a thick milk skin, because that skin naturally forms when lower-density fats rise to the top.

Then I checked the history of homogenization. The very first homogenizer patent was issued in 1899 to French inventor Auguste Gaulin. Yes, literally the exact year our game is set in. What a coincidence!

For its US rollout timeline:

  • 1919: The start of commercial sales. Torrington, Connecticut successfully sold homogenized milk, marking one of its earliest commercial practices in the US.
  • 1920s–1930s: A major technical breakthrough. In the early 1930s, Dr. G. Malcolm Trout at Michigan State University figured out that pasteurizing before homogenization effectively prevented fat separation, paving the way for industrial production.
  • 1930s: Popularity and legalization. Most US cities legalized the sale of homogenized milk between 1935 and 1939.
  • 1940s–1950s: The industry standard. By 1950, it was permitted in most cities, and by the 1950s, the vast majority of US milk was commercially homogenized, making it the official industry standard.

So, the Cracked Wheat with Milk Arthur Morgan eats in Rhodes was almost certainly made with non-homogenized milk, and that yellow layer on top is authentic milk skin.

To recreate the taste and texture, I had to improvise: I heated regular milk, shook it like crazy in a bottle to build up a foam layer, and then simmered it on low heat for an hour to evaporate some water and form that yellow skin. I gently lifted the skin off, cooked the cracked wheat in the remaining milk, and then placed the skin right back on top.

The taste? Super rich and milky. The skin gives it this wonderfully rustic, cheese-like texture.

If Jack lived to be 70, the cracked wheat with milk he'd eat in his later years would taste just like the plain, modern stuff we have today. Would he ever miss the heavy, skin-topped cracked wheat with milk of his childhood? And would it ever make him think of Uncle Arthur, who once took him fishing?

Took this during the mission with Rains Fall. It's a different style from what I usually shoot, and it ended up becoming my favorite capture so far.

Discussion writing some fan fiction, wondering what animals represent the gang

Upvotes

I asked this elsewhere and got all of one reply saying that Charles' daemon would be some kind of falcon or hawk, which I loved.

anyway, I'm obsessed with red dead right now and my best passion (aside from gaming) is creative writing, so I decided I'd creatively write about red dead. the result of a lot of thinking was an alternate universe based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, where they'd each have a daemon.

In HDM a daemon is basically your soul physically manifested as an animal. this animal represents who you are inside, and separation from it is emotionally & physically agonising. the daemon is usually the opposite gender to the person, and in children it can shapeshift between animals. usually around puberty it "settles" into one form (so jack would have a shape shifting soul, basically)

tldr i'd love to hear people's ideas about what animal each gang member (and other npc) would have! right now I've given Arthur a deer for obvious reasons, but his loyalty to a fault & servitude to Dutch/the gang is kind of 'dog' (especially in HDM canon). I'd also like to hear what names they might have.

I know this is kind of niche and weird but this is what 8 years without a new game does i guess

So i was in New Austin and did the throwing knife on swinging bridges to go to space when the game launched me out of the map. I exited and re-opened the game and boom, John Marston is now taking a vacation in Guarma.
