Mod post Unsolicited DMs

Hey all,

We've been receiving multiple complaints about members receiving unsolicited DMs promoting an AI therapy app recently. This account has been banned from multiple subreddits, including this one, however we are unable to prevent DMs.

We strongly urge you to continue reporting them to Reddit admins in the hope that they will eventually take action.

Besides reporting, Reddit's advice is:

"You can adjust your privacy settings to restrict who can send chat requests or direct messages. Set preferences to allow messages only from accounts older than 30 days, specific people, or nobody at all. This can significantly reduce the likelihood of receiving spam or unwanted promotions"

Thank you all for helping to keep this a safe space for our members.

Mod response inside Please read this before posting about feeling suicidal.

1.9k Upvotes

There has been an increase in the number of posts of individuals who are feeling suicidal. And to be perfectly honest, most of us have been isolated, scared, lonely, and there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world due to COVID.

Unfortunately, most of us in this community are not trained to handle mental health crises. While I and a handful of others are licensed professionals, an anonymous internet forum is not the best place to really provide the correct amount of help and support you need.

That being said, I’m not surprised that many of us in this community are struggling. For those who are struggling, you are not alone. I may be doing well now, but I have two attempts and OCD was a huge factor.

I have never regretted being stopped.

Since you are thinking of posting for help, you won't regret stopping yourself.

So, right now everything seems dark and you don’t see a way out. That’s ok. However, I guarantee you there is a light. Your eyes just have not adjusted yet.

So what can you do in this moment when everything just seems awful.

First off, if you have a plan and you intend on carrying out that plan, I very strongly suggest going to your nearest ER. If you do not feel like you can keep yourself safe, you need to be somewhere where others can keep you safe. Psych hospitals are not wonderful places, they can be scary and frustrating. but you will be around to leave the hospital and get yourself moving in a better direction.

If you are not actively planning to suicide but the thought is very loud and prominent in your head, let's start with some basics. When’s the last time you had food or water? Actual food; something with vegetables, grains, and protein. If you can’t remember or it’s been more than 4 to 5 hours, eat something and drink some water. Your brain cannot work if it does not have fuel.

Next, are you supposed to be sleeping right now? If the answer is yes go to bed. Turn on some soothing music or ambient sounds so that you can focus on the noise and the sounds rather than ruminating about how bad you feel.

If you can’t sleep, try progressive muscle relaxation or some breathing exercises. Have your brain focus on a scene that you find relaxing such as sitting on a beach and watching the waves rolling in or sitting by a brook and listening to the water. Go through each of your five senses and visualize as well as imagine what your senses would be feeling if you were in that space.

If you’re hydrated, fed, and properly rested, ask yourself these questions when is the last time you talked to an actual human being? And I do mean talking as in heard their actual voice. Phone calls count for this one. If it’s been a while. Call someone. It doesn’t matter who, just talk to an actual human being.

Go outside. Get in nature. This actually has research behind it. There is a bacteria or chemical in soil that also happens to be in the air that has mood boosting properties. There are literally countries where doctors will prescribe going for a walk in the woods to their patients.

When is the last time you did something creative? If depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder have gotten in the way of doing creative things that you love, pull out that sketchbook or that camera and just start doing things.

When’s the last time you did something kind for another human being? This may just be me as a social worker, but doing things for others, helps me feel better. So figure out a place you can volunteer and go do it.

When is the last time that you did something pleasurable just for pleasure's sake? Read a book take a bath. You will have to force yourself to do something but that’s OK.

You have worth and you can get through this. Like I said I have had two attempts and now I am a licensed social worker. Things do get better, you just have to get through the dark stuff first.

You will be ok and you can make it through this.

We are all rooting for you.

Discussion OCD trauma injured my brain in a way that mimics brain damage

When your OCD is so severe and the theme is so egodystonic and you spend years where your consciousness is marinated in and only in obsession and compulsion and avoidance against your will and then learning to completely disregard a thought - my brain can't hold a thread of thoughts the way it used to. I had to manually to teach it to disengage in a way that now it defaults to out of over-coping. This is a part of it. The body-wide response at all times to nonstop ocd and the torture I'm convinced have physically scarred parts of my brain and damaged it to the point I feel like it must be early onset dementia if I wasn't so young.

Need support/advice i can feel myself slipping away

i (19f) feel like i've been battling this spiral for months now with very few glimpses of hope. at this point i've stopped expecting it all together. my ocd has made me withdraw socially since middle school and i haven't been able to recover since. i spent my teen years majorly depressed and missed out on so many "normal" life experiences to the point where i feel like im starting from the ground up when my life has barely started. i've been in and out of therapy for years and i feel like my medication is only a temporary solution.

i've put in the work, i've tried to be mindful, but each day is turning into a blur and its making me miserable.

my question is, how do you cope with it? i want to love myself and lead a fufilling life but my brain is my worst enemy. how can some of you find love and meaningful friendships without letting this tear you apart from the inside anymore?

Question about OCD OCD got worse than ever after getting completely better at life...?

Upvotes

20, F. Has anyone experienced this and is there a reason? Basically like a year or 6 months ago I had instrusive thoughts, scary and creepy but they passed by and my mind literally forgot them for like 6 months without remembering them, getting scared, ruminating about how scary it was, like it was nothing. In that era, I was bed ridden, with extreme depression and anxiety, didn't shower, didn't eat, didn't manage to do anything. My whole body hurted of the amount of trauma I had in it.

Now, 2 months later, all by myself, I reconstructed my life like crazy without any help, I wake up early, I sleep 8 hours, eat super healthy, shower everyday, I do hobbies, I do exercise, I clean the house, I organize, healthy screen time, I made a detox and only watch content of self growth... I even got out of my comfort zone and after 4 years at home scared to walk one centimeter out of it, I take the bus, go to the center of the city, spend more than four hours, I do appointments with my mom there and all that, I do everything that nurtures my mind and body.... aaaaaaand my fears have kicked in worse than ever. Like suddenly, I was super euphoric because of the fact I was living life for the first time and suddenly... boom.

I saw that little by little these fears were appearing and started to saturate me, but literally almost from one day to another, I went from how grateful I am to live this life finally omg this is amazing to absolute pure OCD anxiety at it's max, dissociation and as always in this disorder, fear as the center of everything.

Genuinely why? Fear of losing what I achieved? Because deep down my brain is scared of experiencing something terrible and getting that miserable in life again or even worse? It's attacking that? Or like pressure of staying good? I find some reasons but I don't know.

All my instrusive thoughts are related to morality, harm and SPECIALLY, loss of control, to the point where my anxiety is so high and I ruminate that so bad that I start to believe it, I start to believe I can't tell the difference from reality anymore even though deep down I know I can. Sometimes just sometimes, when I get distracted without me knowing, I find that that feeling have disappeared almost almost completely.

Support please, no reassurance Fear of being recorded

This is my biggest mental compulsion right now. It’s causing me to stay inside the house. I finally went out for drinks with a date Saturday and ever since then I’ve been bed ridden with the fear I was recorded and now I’m on the internet somewhere. Its been over a year of this persistent thought. It’s fueled by the things I have done while drinking. Alcohol is the only thing that gives me relief from my thoughts but then it is far far worse after. I also take Xanax to help with the anxiety and the combination obviously leads to memory loss which causes me to torture myself with scenarios. I’m rambling at this point but I feel like going through this cycle over and over has made me feel so defeated. Im in therapy and have been off and on meds throughout the years. I have an appointment today for an IOP type of treatment plan I hope this will be all over soon

Need support/advice How do you cope?

Undiagnosed (as far as I know) but my psychiatrist suspects and is treating me for it. I just want to know how people diagnosed cope so I can hopefully learn to cope too.
Sorry this post is kinda low effort, I just need the help.
Thank you.

Discussion Thank you.

First ever reddit post, bare with me here.

I’ve had intrusive thoughts and have been browsing reddit for years about hobbies, somehow I’ve never thought to look up mental illnesses to find other people who experience stuff similar to what I do, my themes have revolved mostly over harming closes ones, and I’m sitting here crying because I’m not alone.

I feel like an imposter since I just have a generalized anxiety disorder diagnosis but I’m currently waiting for further therapy for intrusive thoughts. Still wanted to thank all the kind and brave souls who post their story here.

Discussion Did finding out about ocd explain a lot of previous events in your life?

I feel like learning about ocd has made me put together so many dots about why I acted certain ways. I don’t think my ocd was as bad when I was younger but I think I’ve had it at least to some degree for a very long time.

ERP help wanted Conquering my fear of heat/heat exhaustion slowly

I’m afraid of my HR rising outside in the summer, heat stroke, heat exhaustion. For my children I’m fearful of it being way too hot on them outside. Went outside for hours this week and it was nerve racking as hell but I did it. Really hot day but I did it!

Discussion Side effects of Luvox

Hi! I just started Fluvoxamine (Luvox) a week ago at 25mg and I’m really hopeful it helps. I’m unsure if it’s placebo effect but I have been sleeping better already and a bit more patient with my 6 year old and not thinking myself in circles as much.

I’m just wondering if anyone experienced acne on this medication and/or any skin changes. I also have hormonal conditions (Pcos and endometriosis) so I’m trying to pinpoint what symptom goes with what lol and just the past week my skin has broken out quite a bit and is dry (but I’m also in an endo flair and hoping that’s not also caused from the medication)

I will say I have been extremely sick to my stomach since starting it and hoping I’ll adjust more within the next week or so? I was told 25mg once a day for 4 weeks then 25mg twice a day

Need support/advice Severe Fear, Isolation, and Compulsions

I am afraid of being alone, and I am also afraid of being around people I do not feel safe with. Whenever I feel unsafe, I constantly perform compulsions, such as taking photos and videos, to get reassurance. I have been doing this for around 3 years.

Now I feel extremely isolated. I do not feel able to go outside my house at all because I have a very intense fear of leaving. I stay locked inside my home because I am afraid that I might have a blackout, leave the house without awareness, and do things that are completely against my character.

Because of this fear, my mother has to keep the key somewhere safe where I do not know the location, because I am afraid I might lose control and touch young boys without their consent, even though this goes completely against who I am and what I believe.

I also have an intense fear that men may attack me or harm me in a very serious way. Because of all these fears, I feel completely isolated from life. I feel trapped, unable to live normally, go outside, or feel safe.

Just venting - no advice please Can’t enjoy shows

First time venting here, i’m not opposed to advice:) I can’t enjoy TV shows anymore. Everytime I watch anything, I have to rewind 10 seconds over and over and over to make sure I know exactly what was said. For example a character might say “that’s a yellow car” and suddenly i’m questioning whether they said “That’s or that is” in reality IDGAF which which one it was, but my brain forces me to rewind and make sure I know what exactly was said or i’ll freak out and feel like i’m gonna die if I don’t do it / panic attack.

I’ve tried ignoring it but I genuinely can’t. And if I try to ignore it, ill begin thinking that the longer I ignore it for, the more annoying it’ll be when i inevitably can’t take it anymore and have to reverse all the way back to the scene. I don’t want to do it but I have to, it pains me everytime to the point I get angry and just give up. And once i realise what exactly was said, I start repeating the sentence in my head over and over to not forget it and if i do forget I need to go back again, which then leads to me being distracted from the show..

It’s exhausting and i really can’t enjoy any media nowadays because of this. I’m wondering if anyone else experiences this, would be nice to know i’m not the only one. I can’t enjoy watching shows around friends or partners, because I don’t want to annoy them.

Sorry for how long this rant was.. FYI I’m not diagnosed with OCD, but i definitely have my suspicions.. Also sorry if the grammar is poor, I wrote this in a fit of rage haha.

TLDR: everytime i watch a show, I have to rewind 10 seconds over and over to ensure I heard the exact words said, and rehearse them in my head and it completely ruins watching shows for me.

Need support/advice how do i stop myself from looking things up?
