To preface, I have so much love for myself :) I love who I am as a person and overall what I’ve grown to look like (especially my body). But starting in high school, I got into a habit of looking at my reflection often. Because I was finally feeling pretty and loved what I saw. Now that I’m an adult, my facial-features have settled and the proportions look a little different compared to my teenage years. And that’s fine, it happens to all of us. But I didn’t realize until I went to therapy that I currently have a mirror-checking compulsion.
If I see my reflection, I *have* to pose and smile a certain way to find that cute angle that I know and love. Every time I use the bathroom, I look for that angle, usually find it soon if not immediately, and leave feeling happy that I look like that. The cute image of myself lingers in my head and gives me confidence. But sometimes I struggle to find that angle, especially now that I’m older and gained a little weight. It keeps me in the bathroom longer because I’m trying to restyle my hair, or find the right way to smile, maybe change the lighting in hopes that it will help. I call this a “ticket-to-leave” behavior, because finding that angle is what allows me to leave the bathroom. If I catch my reflection in a window pane, I do the same thing. If I find the angle but moved around and lost it, I have to start over.
Despite how often I do this behavior, it’s not *that* much of an issue. It feeds my self-confidence more often than not. But when I do struggle, it sucks. And I start to notice how much control it has over me. Especially if I accidentally see my reflection and have to go through the song-and-dance. If I stare directly into the mirror without any emotion, no happiness in my eyes, I’m not always a fan of what I see.
I don’t know if anyone relates to this, but I wanted to share my thoughts. My other OCD compulsions involve door and stove checking before bed.
