General Discussion Why is car insurance considered a necessity so permissible, yet getting a mortgage to buy a house to live in is not considered a necessity?

Upvotes

In Islam, conventional insurance is haram, but if local laws require it due to “necessity”, like car insurance, it is permissible.

Why is something like car insurance considered a necessity, but taking out a mortgage for the sole purpose of buying a house to live in with my family not a necessity?

Take London where I live. Plenty of people with families live perfectly fine using public transport and Ubers, yet many people still have cars despite the above options being available. My dad never had a car when I was growing up, yet my family got around perfectly fine.

People argue that renting is an option. Renting is fine when I’m young, healthy, and working, but what about when I’m old and I retire? How am I supposed to keep paying rent? If I own my home, my wife and I don’t need to worry about that, so why is home ownership not a necessity?

If anything, alongside food, a secure roof over your head is the biggest necessity no?

Seeking Support rant: i feel like i ruined everything!

Upvotes

sorry if this doesn't seem very Islamically related, its just that this thing thats bothering me I am always thinking about how I wish Allah swt would just "fix" it for me, even though it is all my fault. Honestly I don't even know how it could be really fixed.

My biggest thing that held me back in my life is my insecurities, they kept me from being confident and feeling like a real person honestly. I was never insecure about myself at all until I was a teen, and that's kind of when I stopped being the hard working and healthy kid I used to be, since my insecurity and depression and anxiety seriously deteriorated my life and my mindset towards life.

In my late teens I got over a lot of the insecurity because I think over time I just started to accept it and felt a lot of comfort knowing that Allah swt makes everyone perfectly. So even if I didn't like my face, Allah swt did because thats what he made me.

But then unfortunately I learned that everything I was insecure about was my own fault. Everything I hated about my face was actually not genetic, it was because of my recessed jaws. I started looking back on photos from my childhood and realized that as soon as I took on bad habits and made bad decisions for my jaw development, THAT was when I became ugly, not just because of the natural development for things. For example, when I was 11 I started mouthbreathing while eating and drinking, I noticed someone doing this and thought it looked comfortable (sounds very weird I know but I can pinpoint the exact way I started shifting my breathing habits) and the photos from before and after are stark. I had bad posture, stayed up for all nighters probably almost every day from age 14-20, ate total junk, and didnt exercise because I was a really bad kid and teen who never listened to my parents. When I felt insecure i BEGGED my parents for braces and was honestly very rude and entitled about it, considering how expensive it is and how I only got them for vain reasons. I had no idea that this + tooth extractions actually make things worse.

I had no idea that this would all result in a severe jaw recession, and a GENUINE problem. Being ugly isnt a problem, but being recessed definitely is and can require surgery.

I'm so sad about this because it wasn't all in my head.. I genuinely became insecure because I GOT UGLY! and it was all my fault. Allah swt gave me a totally normal face and I alone ruined it because I was such a bad person and unhealthy and was ungrateful. I don't find comfort in knowing that Allah makes everyone the way they are meant to be because I had that and I messed it all up. surah an nisa also says "Whatever good befalls you is from Allah and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself" ... and I have caused so much bad to myself through my own bad - ness.

How I wish Allah swt could just fix everything for me, but I have ruined it all. And now I have a REAL reason to be insecure. what can I even do. I really do not at all want to get surgery and I'm stuck with this face that reflects how terrible of a person I am and I am just soooo sad I was ever ungrateful. Islamically, how do you deal with a thing that happens to you that is your fault? Is making dua for a fix without doing anything (I'm scared of surgery so much) considered not "tying your camel"?

General Discussion Reminder about a subject that is too ignored

To my Muslim brothers,

I write this reminder as someone who is educating himself about climate change.

The Muslims in countries that have wealthier lifestyles have a responsibility of adapting their lifestyles, even with small changes, because among the most affected by climate change are brothers and sisters who often live much poorer lifestyles.

We are not perfect ; but we should reduce our emissions because it is beneficial.

It’s not about living in tents, even changes like reducing meat consumption (I’m no vegan but in the West many people do eat too much meat, during the time of the salaf it was much more precious), reducing electricity consumption, unnecessary AI usage or unnecessary plane usage, or food wasting when done in masses, do have an impact

It’s not about punishing the poor as they already struggle, but those who do have lavishness in their lifestyle should indeed question it

والسلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Seeking Support Could this be intuition ?

I honestly do not know how to explain this because it has been happening to me for years and I am starting to feel confused and even scared
I often have this strange feeling that I already know certain things before they happen I am not talking about dreams but thoughts that suddenly appear in my mind without any reason Sometimes they are so random that I ignore them and then they actually happen
It is not only about events Sometimes I meet someone for the first time and I immediately have a very strong feeling about their intentions or their character before I really know them I cannot explain why I feel that way and more often than not I end up finding out that my first feeling was right
Yesterday while I was praying a quiet thought crossed my mind that I was going to have an argument with my mother I immediately asked Allah to help me stay patient and handle whatever was coming The next day it happened exactly like that and I had to control myself
Something similar happened with a boy I used to be very close to Throughout our studies my grades were always higher than his Yet before the final results came out I told him that he would end up getting a better grade than me He did and everyone around us was surprised including me
Experiences like these have happened more than once and I genuinely do not know what to make of them Part of me wonders if it is simply intuition Part of me wonders if it is a blessing from Allah But another part of me is afraid of these thoughts because I know that only Allah has knowledge of the unseen
I am not claiming to know the unseen and I do not want to fall into any belief that goes against Islam I am only trying to understand what I have been experiencing
Has anyone else experienced something similar from an Islamic perspective How do you understand it and what do scholars say about things like this

Seeking Support important I really just need advice

Title: I want to return to Allah

Assalamu alaikum. Please don’t shame me. I never thought I would share something this personal on Reddit, but I desperately need advice and don’t have anyone I feel safe speaking to.I feel like I have been a horrible daughter. I don’t pray, and I haven’t taken Islam seriously for a long time. Growing up, I practiced mainly because I was afraid of my parents. I would wear hijab in front of them but sometimes remove it behind their backs. and as I got older, I became even further away from Islam. Now my father is sick. He has diabetes, high blood pressure, and problems with his lungs( leakage). I love him, and I desperately want him to recover. I also blame myself because I worry that the stress I caused him contributed to his health problems. He repeatedly tells me that he forgives me, but I cannot seem to forgive myself. Something inside my soul is telling me to return to Allah. However, another part of me keeps saying, “You are only doing this because your father is sick.” It feels strange to suddenly turn to Allah now when I wasn’t praying or taking the religion seriously before. I’m scared that my intentions are selfish and that I’m only returning because I want Allah to heal my father. have searched online and read people saying that Allah is forgiving and that I should simply return to Him. I believe that Allah is forgiving, but I still don’t understand what I’m actually supposed to do. I keep researching, but none of it feels like it is sinking in. I feel overwhelmed, guilty, and completely lost.I don’t have anyone I can safely cry or rant to about this. The religious people I know are connected to my family and community, and I’m afraid of being judged, exposed, or used as an example in front of other people. That fear is why I have never approached anyone I personally know. Please don’t judge me for this either, but I am currently on my period, so I cannot even begin by praying salah right now. I genuinely don’t know what I’m allowed to do or what my first step should be. Can I still sincerely return to Allah if my father’s illness is what brought me back? What can I do while I’m on my period? How do I make tawbah when I feel overwhelmed and don’t even know where to start? How can I ask Allah to heal my father without feeling like I’m only turning to religion because I’m scared? Please be honest. I genuinely want to return to Allah.

Seeking Support I need duas and miracle stories because everything seems to go wrong and that Allah is not listening/answering

Hello,

I am writing because I am starting to feel desperate regarding the mercy of Allah.
Long story short, my sister is very suicidal. After 2 s** attempts last year, she spent the year being better and improving before starting a new nightmare this summer and committing 3 attempts in only 48 h. My parents directly took her to the hospital again, and two weeks later, some hours after she quit the hospital and said she was better, she attempted again. I know one shouldn't make duaa blindly, so we're doing everything but nothing is working: no doctor seems to know how to help her, no medicine, etc. All of this is costing a lot of money, and worse than this, I am seeing my family's mental health getting destroyed as well. My mum also just underwent surgery for cancerous cells; my brother is suffering from bullying, weight, eating disorders and obesity; and my father has his own companies that have been eating his health since I was very young and is a big smoker and can't stop smoking. I am also not in a good situation financially even though my father paid for very expensive studies. Nothing seems to work out, everything is getting worse, and every time I put my trust in Allah, everything seems to be getting worse. I pray, I make duaa, I cry, and I speak to Him honestly but it's becoming harder to have hope, and I can see my body also starting to endure the consequences of all this stress. Wallah I can't live like this anymore. I feel guilty for wanting to be happy, to have a family, to travel, to have money. Why would Allah, AL-Latif, The most Merciful, The Waduud, The Chafi, not help us and put us in a better situation. My mum is such a strong believer and the sweetest and nicest soul, and they do not deserve this. It is a weight I can't and don't want to bear anymore.

I need your miracle stories if anybody could relate in any way, and of course your duas. May Allah grant you everything you wish for. I hope this is not too long, but I don't have anything that makes me feel good or gives me hope about how unfair and bitter life is, and I loose even more hope when I see all the horrors happening in the world. I am looking forward to reading you.

Seeking Support Traumatized by car accident

Assalamu alaikum everyone,
I’m really struggling and could use your duas and advice from an Islamic perspective.
A few weeks ago, my father, my sister, and I were involved in a serious car accident. Alhamdulillah, my sister and I walked away with only bruises, but my father suffered a devastating spinal injury.
He underwent a 7-hour spinal surgery, and ever since then our lives have completely changed. He is currently paralyzed from around his stomach/chest area down to his legs and is still in the hospital. He hasn’t even started rehabilitation yet.
To make things even harder, we recently sought another medical opinion, and that doctor believes the screws in his spine may not have been positioned well enough and that he might need another procedure. I’m terrified. After the first surgery, his oxygen levels were affected, and I’m so scared of him having to go through another operation.
I keep replaying the accident in my mind and remembering how life was before all of this. Sometimes I look at my father and can’t process how everything changed in a single moment. I know that Allah is Al-Qadeer and that nothing is impossible for Him, but emotionally I’m finding it so difficult to cope.
I’m trying my best to have tawakkul, make dua, pray, and remind myself that whatever Allah decrees has wisdom, even if I can’t understand it. Some days I feel strong, and other days I feel like I’m falling apart.
For anyone who has gone through a severe test, a traumatic accident, or cared for a loved one with a spinal cord injury, how did you cope while still trusting Allah? What helped you strengthen your sabr without feeling like you were suppressing your emotions?
Please keep my father in your duas. May Allah grant him complete shifa if it is best for him, ease his pain, guide us to the best medical decisions, and grant our family patience and steadfastness. Ameen.
Jazakum Allahu khayran.

Quran & Hadith Hifz Tip: Memorizing too little can make you quit just as much as memorizing too much

One piece of advice we hear all the time is:

"Start small."

It's good advice, but I don't think it's the whole picture.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Take on only what you can bear, for Allah does not tire until you tire."

And Aisha رضي الله عنها narrated that the deeds most beloved to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are small.

The key word here is your capacity.

If you memorize more than you can realistically handle, you'll eventually burn out.

But I also think the opposite can happen.

If your daily portion is so small that, at the end of the session, you don't feel like you've really progressed, motivation slowly fades. You start wondering whether you'll ever reach your goal.

The sweet spot is somewhere in between.

Choose an amount that is:

  • within your capacity,
  • sustainable every day,
  • but still enough that you can close the Mushaf thinking, "Alhamdulillah, I made real progress today."

As your capacity grows, let your daily portion grow with it.

That's why I don't think there's a universal answer to questions like, "How many verses should I memorize each day?"

For one person it might be a single verse.

For another, it might be half a page.

The best amount is the one you can maintain consistently without losing the feeling that you're moving forward.

May Allah grant us consistency and make the Quran the spring of our hearts.

Seeking Support Advice for someone suffering

Assalamu alaikom,

I am a male, suffering from a rare disease called post-finasteride syndrome. It happened when I started a drug called finasteride october last year to combat hair loss. I was told that the side effects were very rare and mild, and if they occured they would go away. They didn’t and they persist to this day, 8 months post quitting (in varying severity, some days are easier than the others.). There are symptoms like anhedonia, s*xual dysfunction, depression, panic attacks and suicidal ideation. This situation has consumed my entire life and it is really difficult to see a path forward with such constant suffering.

I’m wondering how much Allah will punish me for not being able to practice my religion to the fullest. I pray, but because of the anhedonia I can barely feel the beautiful feeling praying once gave me. I make dua but to be honest I am really tired and nihilistic at this point. I really feel bad about myself because I always wanted to be the ideal man, who took his religion and life seriously and now I feel like a complete wreck.

My only lightpoint is the fact that there is a doctor out there experimentally treating patients who, according to him and many researchers has figured out the whole mechanism of why the disease occurs and potential treatment areas. People have anecdotally reported feeling a lot better after the treatment.

I am enrolled at his doctors office (its in the US and im from the Netherlands so I see the doctor via telehealth). Truth to be told, I am really scared of the future and of the treatment and really struggle. This has financially burdened me a lot (Im a uni student fresh on my first job, ive only been working for 8 months).

What advice would you guys give me? I am really lost for words on this situation and have trouble staying positive. I would appreciate if you made dua for me, and another brother I have met who is in a similar situation.

Question about Islam Selling or gifting alcohol that I found

We recently bought a new house and there are alot of leftover belongings from the previous owner that the agents said are ours and we could keep. Some of which are, from what I've heard, a very valuable old collection of assorted alcohol bottles.

Am I allowed to sell these since or give it to non-muslim friends? Or do I have to dispose of them or throw it away

Quran & Hadith Linguistic Features Of Baqarah (Quran 2:32)

Post image
60 Upvotes

They replied, “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are truly the All-Knowing, All-Wise.”

Qaalu • they said

This verse doesn't start with "and (wa)" because it's the continuation of dialogue in one timeline. Quran uses the word "and" deliberately when it starts a new timeline or stage. For example from previous verses first mention of Adam was before creation and then after creation and Quran used the word "and" between them. This verse doesn't mention "and" because it's inside the dialogue continuing from previous verse. That's the precision of Quran that it mentions conjunctions in such detail. (The science dealing with joining and separating the sentences is miraculous rhetorical device in the Quran which comes under category of wasl and fasl.)

Subhanaka • Glory be to you

The angels before acknowledging their mistake praised Allah that he's pure from all imperfections which is one of the meanings of S-B-H. This is intense form of adab and reverence before God.

Inakka anta • indeed you you are

The pronoun anta(you) creates a restriction that only (Allah) is all-knowing and wise. This restriction was also used in surah fatiha that "only you we worship", and it's rhetorical device in the Quran.

Alim Al Hakim • All knowing and wise

The last quote "innaka antta alim Al Hakim" is from the miraculous feature of Quran called fawasil. End of verses are used with small quote or word that connects it to the rhythm of previous verses, and it connects the verse with emotion or praise of God, giving a sign of completion. In surah Baqarah, such long quotes are used but in shorter surahs, words are used as fawasil.

What are rhetorical devices in Quran ?

Rhetorical devices are category of literary features or miraculous features of Quran, which are used all over the Quran and make Quran more eloquent and far higher than arab poetries. This is one of the challenges in Quran to produce something like it.

Seeking Support Feeling relieved, guilty, and scared after a deep talk with my mom

Assalamu’laikum everyone.

So i just had a talk with my mom, a much needed, long-overdue talk if i must say. I’d start this by saying I love my mom and she’s amazing. But she’s the kind of person who’s difficult to understand others. She’s so amazing both in her deen and dunya that she can’t understand how others (her children including me) are not her and that we are different from her. She always has that “if i can do it, why can’t you?” mentality. She’s the kind of person who would yell and be angry at us for slacking off with our deen, who would make hurtful comments and not realize it, who is so hard to simply apologize without overexplaining her “reasoning.” And because of this, it’s always been difficult to genuinely communicate with her for the things that actually matter. I’ve always been suppressing myself growing up, and she knew this… in a way. I’ve broken down once when i was younger during a family supper with our relatives when i found out that one of them was a hypnotherapist and i was asked “do you want to try? Got anything to say?” I also had gone to a psychologist once (also with her)… but even after all that, it seems like she still can’t understand what i needed. And a part of me is already like “well, it is what it is, this is just her flaw as a human being.”

So just now we had a talk. And after a long time, I finally told her a story that made me fall out of my deen and it was her hurtful words. For reference i’m still praying regularly, wear the hijab, read quran, etc. But i felt like i was falling out of my deen when i was the best version of myself like three months ago.

And, well… as expected, her reaction was so typical of her. She laughed (in a “trying to lighten up the mood” kinda way, but still. If you know, you know. Like i was crying and the laugh just hit me wrong), explained her point of view (which is fair and expected of her), and apologized. But somehow i couldn’t accept her apology because… her delivery was just… it didn’t feel genuine enough to me or maybe it was just how the apology didn’t meet my expectations the way i wished her to do. I was still angry at that point. I was crying and she was not.

Then i proceeded to talk some more about how i wished she wouldn’t be angry all the time anymore. How her approach to remind me of our deen with anger and force won’t actually reach me. How her words can be hurtful and i’m probably not the only one who feels that way toward her. How i wished to be like her but i’m not her and she just can’t understand that. Basically i finally said the things i’ve always wanted to say all my life but never did cause i KNEW how she would react. And at some point during this second half of the conversation she started crying because (if i have to guess) she finally understood… or because my words hurt her. Ngl i didn’t “raise” my voice but the intonation was also not the best during this part because i was driven by the anger i felt earlier, i admit that. I did try my best to choose the right words too but ofc what i said must have been hurtful at some parts. Of course it feels agonizing when you’re being told that you’re wrong. Nearing the end, i did fix my voice again and you can “feel” it when you finally change your tone, right? When it’s not anger anymore and just.. this kind of hollow and heavy feeling?

She apologized, and this time… as shameful and guilty as it is, i actually felt relieved and freed. I finally said what i’ve always wanted to say and she actually felt it too that she cried. In my head i was like “so you finally cried like how i just did. So my words finally get to you.” And i also apologized to her.

But on the other hand… i also feel guilty. I know my words must’ve hit her this time. And honestly i’m scared cause i know it’s really bad when you upset your mom. Also i’m scared because i’d hate it if we became awkward.

So basically… what should i do here? Apologize again? Am i wrong here? Are we? Or is this really just how it is and it’s just a much-needed outcome to our situation and i should just let time do its job?

Quran & Hadith Duaas to fight anxiety and depression

🌷*Duaas to fight anxiety and depression*🌷

by Asma bint Shameem

We all go through difficult times one time or another.

Here are some duaas proven from the authentic sources that we can read at such times.

1️⃣ The Prophet ﷺ said:

There is no-one who is afflicted by distress and grief, and says:

‘Allaahumma inni ‘abduka ibn ‘abdika ibn amatika naasyati bi yadika, maadin fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qadaa’uka.

As’aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqika awista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilm il-ghaybi ‘indaka an taj’al al-Qur’aana al-adheema rabee’a qalbi wa noora sadri wa jalaa’a huzni wa dhihaaba hammi

“O Allaah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your maidservant; my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the Unseen with You, that You make the Qur’aan the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety),’

but Allaah will take away his distress and grief, and replace it with joy.”

He was asked: “O Messenger of Allaah, should we learn this?” He said: “Of course; everyone who hears it should learn it.” ( Ahmad- saheeh by al-Albaani)

2️⃣ The Prophet ﷺ said:

“There is no Muslim who is afflicted with a calamity and says that which Allaah has enjoined,

Innaa lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji’oon. Allaahumma ajurni fi museebati wa akhlif li khayran minha

“Verily to Allaah we belong and unto Him is our return. O Allaah, reward me for my calamity and compensated me with something better than it,

but Allaah will compensate him with something better than it.”(Muslim)

3️⃣ Ibn ‘Abbaas said that the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ used to say at times of distress:

‎لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ

“Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah al-‘Azeem al-Haleem, laa ilaaha ill-Allaah Rabb al-‘Arsh al-‘azeem, la ilaaha ill-Allaah Rabb ul-samawaati wa Rabb ul-ard wa Rabb ul-‘Arsh il-kareem

“There is no god but Allaah, the All-Powerful, the Forbearing; there is no god but Allaah, Lord of the mighty Throne; there is no god but Allaah, Lord of heaven, Lord of earth, and Lord of the noble Throne.”

(al-Bukhaari, Muslim)

4️⃣ The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Shall I not tell you of something that, if any worldly calamity or disaster befalls any man among you and he says these words, he will be relieved of it. (It is) the du’aa’ of Dhu’l-Noon:

‎لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

“Laa ilaaha illa anta subhaanaka inni kuntu min al-zaalimeen

“None has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allaah), Glorified (and Exalted) be You [above all that (evil) they associate with You]! Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers).”

And in another narration he said:

“No Muslim man says this duaa’ concerning anything but Allaah will answer his prayer.” (at-Tirmidhi -Saheeh by al-Albaani)

5️⃣ The Prophet ﷺ  said:

“The du’aa’ of the person who is in distress is:

‎اللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو فَلا تَكِلْنِي   إِلَى نَفْسِي    طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ وَأَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلا أَنْتَ

‘Allaahumma rahmataka arjoo fa laa takilni ilaa nafsi tarfat ‘ayn wa aslih li sha’ni kullahu laa ilaaha illa anta

Relationship Advice My family never presented me anyone.

Hello !

I’m a woman originally from a Muslim country, living in France.

My parents forbid me from dating (which, up to that point, is fairly normal in my family).

Everyone in my family got married through someone introducing them to their future spouse - arranged marriages, if you can call them that.

My question is this: is it normal that my family has never introduced me to a man for marriage?

Considering that I’m reasonably attractive, intelligent, and kind.

I genuinely don’t understand how I’m supposed to get married, start a family, and so on if I don’t even know any eligible men.

Especially since most of the women in my family got married when they were younger than I am now.

Thank you for reading me.
