S3E5 - Post-Episode Discussion

Aegon’s conquest took 2 years… in all that time nobody thought to spam ballista? What about enemies of the old Valyrian Freehold? It took 150 years for someone to harpoon the bolts to a weight?

Or are they only accurate when fired from ships lol?

Prior to the events of the show, anyway, they mentioned that the wall has been there for thousands of years and they never even had to bolt the doors -- so I assume not much action and danger was happening at all. The Night's Watch members would get shelter, food and were basically well protected from outside danger and wars. They didn't have to do actual work other than the necessary to keep themselves going and do guard shifts on the top of the wall. They would get clothes, weapons and time to practice freely.

The only downside really was that they could not leave (but then again, did they need to?) and even if they did - the lord commanders knew about it and looked the other way regardless, so members of the Watch weren't deprived of human interaction and intercourse either either. You'd have to try to fit in with criminals and thieves, but many were not even criminals to begin with -- so you could definitely find your people. It seems that within their small world at The Wall, they had much better structure, rules and enforced discipline than you'd find on the streets.

If we compare this to living in any other kingdom as a commoner, it sounds like a much better life to be honest lol.

I was too young to watch Game of Thrones when it first came out. Now, I have completed watching the series including the first season of “A Night of the Seven Kingdoms.” I’m barely on the first season of “House of the Dragon” series but I can’t get enough of it! I want to get into reading ALL the books including spin offs. Which path do you recommend: the chronological order (in-Universe timeline) or publication order?

Also, should I stick with the original books or start with the illustrated historical editions?

Alright I need to understand exactly why this guy who was an amazing soldier and incredible enough military mind to take over the kingdom, thought he'd lose against the Dorthraki?

The Dorthraki are terrifying, yes. Especially against levies and other more easily routed and less armored forces. But they are entirely unarmored cavalry. There are ways to deal with that, even in an open field!

He had years to prepare, had the home turf advantage, had tons of money, had access to magic within his kingdom and magic items like that green fire stuff being made in his keep.

In reality, a bunch of pikes, archers and fighting on rocky terrain would remove most of the dorthraki advantage. Could have dug small trenches too, that would have broke a calvary charge.

I'm a big fan of both got and hotd and I'm trying to get into the books as well. I bought the mass market paperback set with the latest artwork but was massively disappointed as halfway through the first book, pages started falling off, which felt terrible considering how careful I try to be with books.

But I guess that's on me, mass market paperbacks tend to have poorly glued spines.

Now I'm trying to to decide if I should go for the regular paperback set with the new covers or just buy the old hardcovers (with the art in the photo).

I'm asking for advice as I've seen mixed reviews for both.

Any advice is appreciated.

But returning to the point, I always thought this was an interesting conversation between the brothers in Tyrion's cell, but I've never really been able to explain (to myself) what purpose it served. In real life, people will talk about nothing just to fill the silence, but in well-written television, Everything Always Means Something. Any theories about the subtext here?

I hope it depicts Dany on the pyramid in Mereen looking east AFTER conquering westeros.

I was rewatching GOT (Hodor episode) and I realized what is missing in HOTD. It’s the magic.

1. Magic of children of men
2. Red woman
3. Night walkers and night animals
4. Pyat pree- warlock that kidnaps the dragons
5. Giants
6. Faceless men
7. Stairs as Wargs (more stated in the books)
8. Lady stonehart

There was this suspense that anything unusual could happen. They didn’t rely solely on dragons for the magic. There is a tiny bit of prophesy. I’m not sure if the books had more magic.

Thoughts?

Personally, I can see Kevin McKidd killing it

It would have been a cool arc to see Jaime travel to Dorne in disguise to learn a more fluid style of fighting like Water dancing.

It could’ve culminated in him riding to protect his brother Tyrion rather than Cersei the one who pushed him to do countless evils.

We see Duncan learn to sword fight and win against Aerion after only having basic ring training.

It’s annoying we seldom saw his metal hand in action either, he could’ve done the ultimate pimp slap on an approaching white walker before kicking back toward to Brienne so she can lop its head off.

In “The Winds of Winter” (season 6, episode 10), when we got the great “Jon Snow reveal” - as usual, everybody went nuts. This one chick just sat in shock, mouth agape, utterly silent for the remaining entirety of the episode. The SECOND it finished, she was like, “Ok, Hold on! Hold on! Hold on! Hold UP!!! Are you telling me. . .

. . .that Jon. . .

. . .is a ‘Lannister’?”

I lost it. After ALL that?!?!? LOL!!! I was in full tears, like: “Yep! He’s the son of Ygritte & Torgo Nudho; the rightful King of Gondor, Lord of Hogwarts & the First Season of The Walking Dead.”

A few days ago I shared some work-in-progress photos after many of you asked how the costume was made. I was genuinely overwhelmed by the kindness and enthusiasm you showed.
This is the completed costume I wore for a theatrical performance inspired by Cersei, and it recently won first place in a cosplay competition here in Italy.
Every part of the costume was handmade, from drafting the patterns and sewing the garments to painting the details and building the accessories.
Thank you again for all the incredible support you’ve shown over the past few days. Reading your comments has been one of the most rewarding parts of sharing this project.
