Caught a few photos of this guy fly fishing from our hotel room in gatlinburg last week, this was 7/14. Maybe a chance he's on this sub, i just started researching fly fishing after this trip vs normal fishing.

Last photo is bear in roughly the same spot on a different night.

3am alarm clock. 5 mile gravel ride on a cheap bike. Line goes tight on swing 1,001. Back home by noon. Hard to beat summer steelheading. Kudos to my homie for the great shots.

Hello all, i just joined this group as i am going on a trip to Mo'orea which is just west of Tahiti. I have never fly fished saltwater before let alone in French Polynesia. Open to any advice on technique or flies/gear. I bought solid boots for bone fish, a salt water real with correct line/leaders/snippet.

My state is cool.

Been fly fishing on and off for roughly 30 years. Recently really got back into it. I’m on the eastern shore of Maryland (I like freshwater fishing) anyways, my family and I will take a trip up to Syria, VA which has me recently looking into fly fishing there (I did scout a few spots for next time) Usually up there May and sometimes October. Here’s my boxes, any color variations any of you spot that I missed or any recommendations for something I don’t have? I mostly like using drys.

Howdy fly anglers! What are your thoughts about fly fishing from a Jon boat?

I’m mostly a wade fly angler when trout fishing but think a small Jon boat could be useful on some of the rivers and lakes here in Texas and Oklahoma when chasing bass and other warm water species. It could be pretty useful targeting trout on bigger rivers like those in Arkansas too.

I’d like to know what your experiences with them are. Do you like em? Any regrets? How do you use them? What are your setups?

Oregon noob question: why doesn’t anybody do fly fishing near the coast? There’s a lot of little streams feeding the rivers. I don’t see any anglers around here and even called a fly fishing guide. It seems like I have to drive east about 1-2 hours minimum. Why? Why doesn’t anybody fly fish an hour within the coast?

Just got my first tenkara rod and starter kit. Really eager to fish it, but wanted to know what others think/perspectives/tips? Also got the book to go with it, truly fascinates me and comes with a bout of honor to practice ancient styles of fly fishing. Excited to experiment with it.

Im going up to the Portland area in the 2nd week of August for a vacation with my girlfriend but I’d like to bring my rods with me to do some fishing if I can get time to. Don’t have any salt gear but definitely would be willing to pick some up while I’m there. What are some fly shops worth stopping at. Would appreciate any tips or advice or any information someone is willing to share. Feel free to PM me I dont want to contribute to spot burning or want anything public that doesn’t need to be. Also will have to get a Maine fishing license is it something I can easily buy online like in New York? Also considering hiring a guide too so any recommendations on that would be great too.

I’m relatively new to fly fishing and I feel like I’m so careful, I always put it in the tube precisely because I am so clumsy. I was breaking the rod down in the parking lot after an admittedly good session on the river and while I was halfway done the rod (which was leaning against me) slid over, it hit something, and the middle section formed a small crack. Almost positive I broke it when I tried to catch it. Only had this rod about a year. I feel awful — it’s somehow much worse than cracking your phone or accidentally hitting your car with a shopping cart. Part of this post is just venting, but how normal is it? I hear of broken rods from fighting fish or snagging twigs, but has anyone else here broken their rod in a really stupid way like I just did today?

I just want to share a quick story about my brothers and me, an adventure we had tonight. So we are both avid fly fishermen. We both live and breathe it like a lot of the people here might also. Anyways after years of always wading I decided to invest in a couple of small inflatable platoon boats. Nothing crazy just a couple of FB marketplace finds. So we have used these boats on two separate occasions just on ponds, and had zero issues. So we decided we were ready to give them a try on a calm part of the river that runs through our area. We get there and set the boats up. My brother realized he doesn't have his foot rest. Ok not a huge deal still usable. I also realized I had my wading shoes. I say screw going in my flip flops I will just deal with sore toes the next couple days wouldn't be the first time. We joke it wouldn't be our style if we can remember everything. So we set out pretty much excited for a quick float. Well we make it maybe 5 or 10 minutes into the float and my brother's boats literally snapped in half... I was down stream so I grabbed a couple pieces of gear he had dropped. He was pretty bummed as was I but I say hey at least it happened early into the adventure and I can just walk and get the truck. We decided to fish for a bit and caught a few rainbows so that was nice. Where we ended was not the ideal area to remove our boats but kinda the best we could do. I go get the truck and grab a small tow strap to pull the two halves of his boat and my boat up. His in the river and I'm standing on top of a steep bank. We get one haft no problem. And the send haft still has the seat attached and for some reason decided fuck we will just leave it on. We attached the strap to a small D ring and I started pulling this SOB up. It gets caught on something so I'm getting a little frustrated and I start pulling with everything I got the D ring gives, I land flat on my back and I shit you not the hook of the strap is straight into my family jewels. I don't think I've even been hit that hard there. I mean the pain was unreal my brother yelled something to me and all I could get out was, "aaawww my balls it got me right in the balls"! There was a moment where I thought I might need a doctor. I literally felt like I was going to puke. As any good brother, he is dying of laughter. Well after a bit I walk it off and we manage to get our stuff out of the River. We get everything loaded and are sitting in the truck. We looked at each other and just had to laugh I mean what else could we do. Aw the memories.

I'm heading to Lyons for a wedding next month. My flight leaves at 8:40PM out of Denver. I've only fished for stocked trout on the Guadalupe. Should I pack a tenkara rod? A 3 weight? I don't know the area and am looking for tips

Hey everyone, I’m in the market for a new fly outfit after learning on a cheap 5-weight outfit from Cabelas. Looking to upgrade but don’t want to spend insane money. I think I need a 6/7 weight but I’m happy to take recommendations. I pretty much strictly fish medium-sized rivers around BC with floating line, but have bent the arbor of my reel 3 times, so it needs to be somewhat durable. Any recommendations for an outfit or rod+reel+line for under $400 ish? I mostly fish dry flies and nymphs but am planning on fishing more streamers this year.

I have the opportunity to buy an Eddie Bauer Edition Sage RPLXI 8 wt 3-piece rod. I cannot find a single example of one that has sold anywhere online. Does anybody have any idea of the value of a roof like this? I understand they were made in relatively small numbers. The person selling it asked me to make an offer and I don't want to offend him.

Hey everyone looking to get my first fly combo, zero experience and have been finding conflicting info online. Found this redington bass field kit outfit on sale for $200. Going to be most likely mainly trout fishing but also some bass. Is this 7 weight combo good for both or should I go for something lighter more geared toward trout specifically? Or any other recommendations? Looking to stay 200 and under.

With the recent weather and it being late July, what flies would you have tied on Any tips for someone fishing Penns Creek for the first time? Is there anything I should know about access before I get there?

Edited to add: looking for a “hybrid” fresh/salt setup that can catch bass and reds.

I am doing some research and looking for images of filleted wild sea trout caught in freshwater during spawning season. I'm not sure if there are important regional differences, but if so I am interested in what you could expect to catch in English rivers. I believe the flesh would look similar to salmon, but trying to confirm this online is tricky because search engines and AI do not know how to reliably respect the differences between freshwater trout and sea trout, wild trout and farmed trout, etc. Even humans sometimes use these terms carelessly or don't specify adequately, so it is hard to know if what you are looking at is correctly classified. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

I have a #7 Echo Boost Blue rod paired with a Lamson Liquid S reel for bass fishing. Primarily lake fishing, but I have done some river fishing for Shoal bass. I'd like to get a second rod so I can have one rigged for topwater/floating lines and a second one rigged for sinking/intermediate line. The question is, do I get a #6 or #8? (I'd like to stick with the same Lamson reel as I have the spare spools). Then, which one gets rigged for floating . Thoughts and suggestions?
