I want give double nymphing a shot, but unsure about what my setup should be.

I’ll be tying one nymph to my tippet, and a second nymph to the shank of the first about 16” behind.

Question is, which one should be first? My heavier size 6 stonefly nymph or my lighter size 16 midge?

My wife is 4'10 and her shoe size is 1.5 (in women's). I prefer not to get her youth waders, but the women's waders don't accommodate exceptionally small feet. I'll get youth if I must but want to exhaust all efforts elsewhere.

Any good solutions here?

Someone on r/flytying posted a query about an old fly shop in MT and it prompted me to get nostalgic about my childhood fly shop, Dan’s. The very first time I took a bus by myself in the city was around age 12 to go to Dan’s. From that day I took the bus down Western at least a few times a month to borrow VHS tapes from Dan and watch him tie. And use whatever few dollars I had scrounged together for tying materials.

Anyway, purely out of curiosity’s sake I’m wondering if anyone else was a customer of his back in the day. RIP Dan. A great mentor and great guy.

I’m about to head to Salida next week to fish the ark and some alpine lakes, how’s the fishing and air quality? Is it worth even going with the fires going on?

Anyone know of any wadeable areas of the lagoon? I only have 1 more morning (tomorrow morning) to fish and my paddleboard is no longer usable sadly. Just going out on a limb on this one to see if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I did manage to get a 26" red this morning on the paddleboard before it broke... which was nice haha.

I feel blessed and lucky. I’m going in with an attitude of I know nothing and will try to learn everything. The guys I’m going with are literally providing everything - transportation, knowledge, gear, and logging. I am paying for my share of the financials. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to go with a group that have been doing this for decades, I’m gonna get humbled big time.

I’ve never been fly fishing before so I’m gonna have to learn that Kenai flip (and a whole bunch of other stuff) when I’m up there. This week we’ve been inventorying gear, making last-minute purchases, testing waders for leaks, and giving the new guy (me) some tough love elbows in the ribs (all in good fun, they take bets on how many times I’m gonna fall into the river or how many flies I’m gonna lose).

I got multiple merino wool base layers, my mid layers and my outer layers. I got my mosquito and bear repellent. My hook pliers, my lanyards and my fillet knife - check. Amber lens polaroid sunglasses, black out eye shades for sleep - check.

If anyone’s got any brotherly advice they can give to a noob, I’m all ears.

Looking to buy my first pair of waders and would rather buy once cry once and have a solid pair that lasts me a long time. I keep hearing about how great Patagonia’s warranty is and wanted to see if anyone had experience with a claim on their waders with them.

My Simms tributary boots died after 2 years. I fish very often, and go for the rainbows all winter. Anyone have recommendations for boots that won’t fall apart?

Spent a quiet afternoon working a small stretch of water with a light fly setup. This little one took a small fly close to the bank.

Definitely not a trophy, but seeing the take and feeling it on the fly rod made the whole session worth it. Sometimes the smaller catches are just as satisfying.

I am lucky enough to have my pilots license and own a 57 Bonanza 4 seater. I want to see if I can find a place to fly to, rent a car, camp and fish for 2 nights. I'm basically retired so flexible on schedule but would like to do it in the next two weeks.

I'm trying to learn the life history (habitats/behaviors/etc.) of minnows and other small fish. I want to learn the different niche (like clusters of similar fish, that do the same thing.) Does anyone know the niches and/or can recommend specific websites with this info?

I will be doing a lot of lake fishing, so I will want this for lakes especially.

I'm curious if anyone has come up with creative ways of shuttling their vehicle from put-in to take-out when floating a river where/when shuttle services aren't available. Lately I've been floating a lot of random rivers where we can't get a car-spot, and we have to take two vehicles, which is a waste of gas and a PITA.

Ideally, it would be something small and light-weight that we can throw in our raft or small drift boat (like a folding bike/e-bike or E-scooter). Where we fish, it's a lot of washboard gravel roads, but not a ton of major hills. It's usually only 3-5 miles by road from put-in to take-out. Would love to hear what people have used or tried!

I’m relatively new to fly fishing and I feel like I’m so careful, I always put it in the tube precisely because I am so clumsy. I was breaking the rod down in the parking lot after an admittedly good session on the river and while I was halfway done the rod (which was leaning against me) slid over, it hit something, and the middle section formed a small crack. Almost positive I broke it when I tried to catch it. Only had this rod about a year. I feel awful — it’s somehow much worse than cracking your phone or accidentally hitting your car with a shopping cart. Part of this post is just venting, but how normal is it? I hear of broken rods from fighting fish or snagging twigs, but has anyone else here broken their rod in a really stupid way like I just did today?

I have the opportunity to buy an Eddie Bauer Edition Sage RPLXI 8 wt 3-piece rod. I cannot find a single example of one that has sold anywhere online. Does anybody have any idea of the value of a roof like this? I understand they were made in relatively small numbers. The person selling it asked me to make an offer and I don't want to offend him.

Hey everyone looking to get my first fly combo, zero experience and have been finding conflicting info online. Found this redington bass field kit outfit on sale for $200. Going to be most likely mainly trout fishing but also some bass. Is this 7 weight combo good for both or should I go for something lighter more geared toward trout specifically? Or any other recommendations? Looking to stay 200 and under.

I’m heading to Penns Creek for the first time this weekend and wanted to get some advice from people who know the stream.

With the recent weather and it being late July, what flies would you have tied on Any tips for someone fishing Penns Creek for the first time? Is there anything I should know about access before I get there?

I’d really appreciate any advice. I’m looking forward to finally experiencing one of Pennsylvania’s legendary trout streams.

Oregon noob question: why doesn’t anybody do fly fishing near the coast? There’s a lot of little streams feeding the rivers. I don’t see any anglers around here and even called a fly fishing guide. It seems like I have to drive east about 1-2 hours minimum. Why? Why doesn’t anybody fly fish an hour within the coast?

Does anyone have any experience with this combo? Looking to get into fly fishing and the local shop recommended this.

What other combos do yall recommend?

I'm heading to Lyons for a wedding next month. My flight leaves at 8:40PM out of Denver. I've only fished for stocked trout on the Guadalupe. Should I pack a tenkara rod? A 3 weight? I don't know the area and am looking for tips

I have a #7 Echo Boost Blue rod paired with a Lamson Liquid S reel for bass fishing. Primarily lake fishing, but I have done some river fishing for Shoal bass. I'd like to get a second rod so I can have one rigged for topwater/floating lines and a second one rigged for sinking/intermediate line. The question is, do I get a #6 or #8? (I'd like to stick with the same Lamson reel as I have the spare spools). Then, which one gets rigged for floating . Thoughts and suggestions?
