I’m having some trouble with my new fishing partner. She beats me to every spot and thinks it’s much better suited for swimming than fishing, and she thinks my fly line is something she needs to jump in and retrieve. Any ideas on how to train this behaviour away? Not really interested in tying her leash to a tree while I fish…

Been fly fishing on and off for roughly 30 years. Recently really got back into it. I’m on the eastern shore of Maryland (I like freshwater fishing) anyways, my family and I will take a trip up to Syria, VA which has me recently looking into fly fishing there (I did scout a few spots for next time) Usually up there May and sometimes October. Here’s my boxes, any color variations any of you spot that I missed or any recommendations for something I don’t have? I mostly like using drys.

….have hooks gotten weaker in the past 5ish yrs? For real, ive been tying close to 40 yrs…now seems hooks bend surprisingly frequently. 5x 14-16” fish. Welcome observations or hook brand recs. cheers.

I posted here a bit ago asking for advice. The main piece of advice that most of you offered was to find a guide or group to learn in person. There’s a group that meets that’s not too far away, so I gave it a shot. It was great - dinner with a bunch of fly fishing folks, a stocked pond to practice casting on, and an experienced instructor to give advice while practicing in a field if desired.

Very welcoming folks. First cast in the pond with a wooly bugger got a bluegill. It was a crap cast (before I got some time with the instructor) and was quick to try recasting before realizing there was a fish on the other end. The instructor stayed with me well after they were packing up, giving instruction on different circumstances and reliving some good times.

Today after work, I went to a spot where a damn spills out. Tried a streamer for a bit, and quickly realized my hook size was too large for the fish in the water. I had been watching some videos on casting parachute adams, as well as detecting and hooking strikes, and I had one that seemed to fit the situation. I was pulling in bluegill nonstop until some rain hit. It was a good way to get a feel for the line and when I had a bite.

Anyway, thought I’d share since I asked for help before. Thank you for everyone who chimed in. I’ve got a dragontail tenkara rod on the way, which should be fun on some of the smaller streams here in Ohio, too.

Im going up to the Portland area in the 2nd week of August for a vacation with my girlfriend but I’d like to bring my rods with me to do some fishing if I can get time to. Don’t have any salt gear but definitely would be willing to pick some up while I’m there. What are some fly shops worth stopping at. Would appreciate any tips or advice or any information someone is willing to share. Feel free to PM me I dont want to contribute to spot burning or want anything public that doesn’t need to be. Also will have to get a Maine fishing license is it something I can easily buy online like in New York? Also considering hiring a guide too so any recommendations on that would be great too.

Fly fishing in Austria is amazing and very underrated in my opinion, yesterday we caught tons of rainbows and some brown trout

I was undergunned for this fish. Was casting a 4wt mid flex rod with a PMD dry + emerger combo to 12-16” rainbows that afternoon.

It was a careful 8 minute fight in a drift boat trying to keep a barbless #18 fly in the front tip of her jaw.

I estimate it was 1 in 10 chance of landing it. 22” and 4lbs - the largest cutbow the guide has seen caught in this particular river over 15+ years.

Are there any dedicated groups for fly fishing off the surf for striper? Or are there any people in here that do this specific type of fishing? If you do please pm me, it’d be nice to bounce some ideas off someone and maybe get a fishing session in. Thank you all!

I am doing some research and looking for images of filleted wild sea trout caught in freshwater during spawning season. I'm not sure if there are important regional differences, but if so I am interested in what you could expect to catch in English rivers. I believe the flesh would look similar to salmon, but trying to confirm this online is tricky because search engines and AI do not know how to reliably respect the differences between freshwater trout and sea trout, wild trout and farmed trout, etc. Even humans sometimes use these terms carelessly or don't specify adequately, so it is hard to know if what you are looking at is correctly classified. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi, looking to purchase my first raft, as wading the south Holston is getting tiring, especially competing for water. I found this Saturn Rd365 for 900 dollars, wondering if anyone has experience on them. It’d be me and another person or me and my dog floating the south Holston and watauga tailwaters.

Hands down the toughest, but also perhaps most striking, place I’ve ever fished. I put in many hours this morning and brought only a single fish to the net. Beautiful clear water, good flows, amazing trout habitat. Could see them everywhere, and they were eating, but not what I had 😂 can’t wait to rest up, read up a little more, replan, and run it back. The quadruple R, those fish aren’t ready. We’re just getting started.

I’m sick and tired of seeing you guys west of the Mississippi and your fat, healthy, luscious trout! Fed up I say!!!

But for real…is it biological or environmental reasons (or both) that our average trout size on the east coast is so whimpy comparatively? I know it doesn’t help that in many places our only native trout isn’t even a trout and maxes out at ~14”. And sure we have big browns here n there. But why hasn’t a fairly hearty species like rainbow gotten established and reproduced reliably creating a population of fat boys? I suppose y’all have bigger water, bigger bugs and bigger genetics. Yet even trout in a place like the San Juan grow to great sizes on a diet of size #20-plus tiny bugs.

That completes my rambling rant. Back to living vicariously, watching you guys and your big beautiful fish.

First catches on the fly! Didnt think i’d get the hang of it but i’m glad i stuck with it. actually caught 2 tiger trout on my dry dropper rig but one fell off before i got any photos! Struggled to learn how to cast but once everything started to click it just fell into place. I am however consistently missing hook sets on dry flies, likely setting too early and pulling the fly right out of their mouths. when do i set the hook on a dry fly?

As you can see in the pic, the thinner end section of my son’s fly rod snapped off. This is one of those telescopic rods where each section nests in the other.

Is this a huge deal? He’s only 5 and we were just getting him started so he’s never been before. We were thinking maybe he’d just have a shorter rod but how important is that last piece? I’m thinking not having it will make it harder to cast or something. Any insight or solutions would be appreciated!

I recently ordered a pair of Patagonia Swiftcurrent Traverse waders in size MLM. I immediately realized that they are too long for me and I have since returned them.

I am now trying to determine what size to go with. I’m not sure if the Ms are also too baggy on me. Would I be better off in a SRM or would they be too restricting? I am wearing my thickest base layers in these images here. I am 6’ tall with a 32” inseam and I weigh 165lbs- a bean stalk by some definition.

I would appreciate any advice or recommendations on what size I should reorder. Thanks all!
