I recently came back to the app because I'm picking up a new language again (Portuguese) and I wanted something that would help me get comfortable recognizing words, and actually speaking since that's not something you really get from a textbook, it would be helpful once I learn enough to start doing immersion properly.

I've been using Duolingo for a long time I remember when there weren't even hearts on the web version and even when the app first launched Back then it was still slow but much more usable it was great for building familiarity with a language and getting some speaking practice.

Now though it's become extremely tedious and honestly feels pretty predatory Without paying you get an ad after basically every lesson, and each lesson only takes around 1 to 3 minutes so you end up spending almost as much time watching ads as learning, At this point I'm pretty sure I'm becoming fluent in mobile advertising!

Then there's the new energy system which at best gives you enough for maybe 2 lessons That's just not enough time to get into a flow especially with all the interruptions

I'd honestly recommend Anki(the golden child) Lingo Legend for gamification/community or Wagotabi if you're learning Japanese casually. if you're looking for other practical study tools or games these are generally great just not as your only resource.

The main thing Duolingo still has going for it is the motivational streak and pretty decent speech recognition for practicing pronunciation

(On a side note if anyone has a space open let me know uwu ;P) I can share my books or be a practice partner in return (Japanese (I am mediocre) and Portuguese(new) and I can help with Norwegian(native))

“Itches like yesterday” makes no sense in English. Is it an idiom in Spanish or some other language? Or maybe it means “if it itches like it did yesterday”. I’m not sure. It doesn’t sound right to me.

i don't even remember why i'm learning norwegian lol. I have no norwegian friends. No trip planned, no norwegian ancestry. nothing but that owl. That green bird knows where i live.

It's 11:58pm, i'm in bed, i've done the bare minimum lesson so the streak survives one more day. can i speak norwegian yet? cant even hold a sentence. Can I confidently state that a small green bird is eating bread? yes.

recently i’ve been getting fall and soccer, as translations for most things, and i just can’t. it confuses the hell out of me and frustrates me an admittedly stupid amount. it’s a language site, american english really shouldn’t be the default right? please say they’ve added british english 😭 may just skip this whole damm sports sectio, it’s killing me.

Is the app strong enough to teach a language to become fluent?

Doesn’t Duolingo understand some only want to do a quick lesson before work in the morning. Some just don’t have time for, and what about those unfortunate people who suffer from dyslexia?

A couple of friends and I have been thinking about a multiplayer world where you can meet people from around the world and talk through live voice and text translation without worrying about language barriers.

The idea is that, if you want to learn a language, it happens as you're exploring, playing, chatting, and hanging out with other players, not just through lessons or flashcards. Do you think something like this would actually be fun and useful enough to keep coming back to? If you already use apps like Duolingo, what would make you use something like this alongside it? What would make this more effective for learning a language?

I'd genuinely love to hear what language learners think about this idea and what you believe would make something like this actually work.

I made an abuse report on a user in my league. Their account is 900 days old and has almost 3 million in XP, has 299 perfect lessons in a day and they jump up by 1000-2000xp in minutes. Do you know about how long before I hear a response from Duolingo?

With that said, I don't like how they're being pulled off. Every single day there's a new update to the Japanese course. That part is good, in fact, it's more than good, it's great!

The problem is that I get courses that I've already finished and need to do them anew because there's new words and I have no clue how to use said new words!

I say there needs to be some new... SOMETHING. The only way I can see learning these new words is by restarting the Japanese course.

Maybe... Make some new courses for the new words?

Also, calling lilly is hell. After section 1 she starts using WAY too many new words AT THE SAME TIME so it's impossible to understand her.

I got sick, and I couldn't open Duolingo, and I lost my 900+ day streak. Is there a way to restore it? I have been trying to contact support, but I didn't get any reply.
