If I'm being honest, I've been mindlessly doing a Greek lesson every night for about 2.5 years and eventually reached here. Still pretty cool though, even if I'm still not that good at Greek yet. 😁✌️

General Discussion Turns out every language you add might be buying your brain some extra years

Saw this study that used brain scans to build an aging clock and tested it across tens of thousands of people. Bilingual brains looked about six years younger than monolingual ones, trilingual closer to seven, and people speaking four languages showed something like thirteen years younger.

Researchers did note lifestyle and social engagement probably play a role too. Still a fun thing to think about next time Duo is yelling at you about a missed lesson.

Curious how this lines up with how people actually feel. Does your memory or focus feel sharper the longer your streak is?

Constructive Criticism Duolingo why did decide to make my learning so difficult 😭

Post image

About two weeks ago Duolingo seemingly changed their course content to include a BUNCH of new words. I’ve already completed 24 units and now I have all these new words saturating my learning that I never learnt! It’s so annoying. They released these “new word” units (you learn about 5 words in each lesson), there’s like 6 lessons in a unit, and they added 3 of them!! That’s like 90 new words I have the learn without the bells and whistles of 1) sounding them out 2) typing them 3) matching the translations. I just gotta straight up MEMORISE them without any learning time.

TLDR: I don’t look forward to my Duolingo toilet sessions anymore.

I knew given solution, but yet, I thought mine would be correct. Is it some sort of contextual error?

Constructive Criticism Japanese Duolingo is turning hellish

I appreciate the lesson updates, I honestly do...

With that said, I don't like how they're being pulled off. Every single day there's a new update to the Japanese course. That part is good, in fact, it's more than good, it's great!

The problem is that I get courses that I've already finished and need to do them anew because there's new words and I have no clue how to use said new words!

I say there needs to be some new... SOMETHING. The only way I can see learning these new words is by restarting the Japanese course.

Maybe... Make some new courses for the new words?

Also, calling lilly is hell. After section 1 she starts using WAY too many new words AT THE SAME TIME so it's impossible to understand her.

The only way I can see it even MILDLY working is by restarting the Japanese course, which I will...

I do not dislike the angry updates on the Japanese course and I do not wish for it to stop, just... Holy shit... X_x

General Discussion Would you learn a language through a multiplayer social game instead of doing lessons?

Post image
Upvotes

A couple of friends and I have been thinking about a multiplayer world where you can meet people from around the world and talk through live voice and text translation without worrying about language barriers.

The idea is that, if you want to learn a language, it happens as you're exploring, playing, chatting, and hanging out with other players, not just through lessons or flashcards. Do you think something like this would actually be fun and useful enough to keep coming back to? If you already use apps like Duolingo, what would make you use something like this alongside it? What would make this more effective for learning a language?

I'd genuinely love to hear what language learners think about this idea and what you believe would make something like this actually work.

General Discussion What's the turnaround time on an abuse report?

Upvotes

I made an abuse report on a user in my league. Their account is 900 days old and has almost 3 million in XP, has 299 perfect lessons in a day and they jump up by 1000-2000xp in minutes. Do you know about how long before I hear a response from Duolingo?

EDIT: They also have 92 top finishes.

Bug? Apps keeps crashing after lesson

Upvotes

Im doing the Japanese course and since a couple of days Duolingo keeps crashing after I finish the first lesson of section 4 unit 2. The weird thing is if I do Greek it doesn’t crash. It’s really frustrating I want to progress but the stupid App just freezes and then crashes. I tried reinstalling but that was no help. Can someone help me out what to do?
