Question Stick grip questions

Im new ish to drumming maybe like 4 or 5 months, im actually learning proper grip styles and techniques now, when I do French grip my thumb keeps sliding down the stick past my index finger, any ideas how to help this?

I am able to play really fast with my fingers in almost a German grip but it slightly irritates my wrist over time, should I stop doing this or what would be recommended?

Feedback Wanted Built an app to help drummers learn songs. Looking for a few beta testers

Hi all! So I'm a software developer and guitarist and I tried building something that transcribes guitars (mainly jerry garcia solos - it was an extension of my recent grateful dead stem player that I built). However, it didn't transcribe guitars very well. I applied the same logic to drums, with some minor tweaks, and it seemed to do a much better job.

I played drums as a kid, but haven't really picked up the sticks in years, so I'm looking for some more active players to help me test my software! The beta test is free and requires no signup. The software probably isn't the best for advanced songs, so mainly looking for beginner to intermediate players who can upload a song or two that they know well or want to learn, and let me know what you think!

I don't want to post the link publicly yet, so just comment or shoot me a message and I'll send you the link! Only looking for a handful for now so it's first come first serve. And for reference, you'll need the mp3 file of the song you want to learn on your computer.

Thanks!

Question How do I adjust this Ludwig hihat stand?

Post image
1 Upvotes

The school I teach has this Ludwig hihat stand and the tension is way too high. I have tried everything I can think of to adjust it. This plastic piece doesn’t lift up and the 2 rods sticking out don’t move. Does anyone else have this stand and know how to adjust it?

I just sold a GPU so I was browsing FB Marketplace, Sunday morning, for a guitar amp I could connect to my PC for writing and just popped up. I'm on Marketplace all the time and never saw it before. A 2006-2007 Copper Mist Metallic Tama Superstar. Shells and snare for $400! It's as clean as it looks. I'd did a little deep cleaning around the lugs and such when I swapped out the heads but it was pretty pristine.

When I picked it I was shooting the shite with the seller about lesser kits I see on FB for more money. He said he was often surprised by what sells and what sits around. He sells quite a bit of kit.

Question Finger control in american grip

I am a pretty new drummer and I feel like im going insane trying to understand it. I saw a lot of people use their fingers as if they are playing french grip but i dont seem to either be able to find any video talking about it or even finding it myself by trying multiple stuff.

Im able to play doubles with the open/close technique (not good since im a beginner but i understand the logic behind it) so i know how to use fingers to this extent but not continuous notes like ive seen multiple times.

If someone is able to explain it to me for once and for all it would be so awesome.

If this isn’t welcome, you are free to delete it, but there is a drummer, great studio drummer and instructor, who is at risk of losing his Achilles tendon. This is how he makes a living. If you are able to spread the word or donate, it is very much appreciated.

Hello everyone.

Sharing some pictures of my home studio drum kit. I was a drum instructor for about 15 years until COVID upended things, now I just play for fun. But I still am a gear collector at the end of the day.

Pearl Studio Session Select Birch / Mahogany shell pack

Mix of Zildjian K Kerope and Meinl Byzance cymbals.

DW Maple Collectors Snare

lots of other fun gadgets to hit and play with.

What would you think is the better value between the two used shell packs below?

Tama Imperialstar: (18” kick /14” floor tom/12” rack /10” rack /14” snare)
$400

Pearl Forum: (22” kick/16” floor tom/13” rack /12” rack /14” snare)
$325

Thanks!

Edit: added the drums next to the sizes

So I've had to switch my kit to mesh heads to make it silent as I got complaints from neighbours. Is this an ok setup? I just worry that it'll be harder to actually improve

Discussion Mt. Rushmore

Hey guys my name is Justin I’m a drum instructor based in southern California. I’ve had a lot of students ask me who my favorite drummer is and that’s such a hard question cause after drumming for over 30 years and being heavily influenced by hundreds of drummers I can’t give just one favorite just like how I can’t name a favorite band.

So I’ve decided to create my Mt. Rushmore . The top 4 drummers that have meant the most to me looking back and forward.

Please post your own Mt. Rushmore or discuss mine. But please be nice and remember it’s all subjective.

John Bonham

The first drummer I heard as a kid that gave me a double take and blew my mind in a way that made me want to start drumming. His work with Led Zeppelin is considered among many, including myself to be of the most influential in rock drumming.

Buddy Rich

I first heard Buddy Rich in 2005 when I started attending Music School. My jaw was on the floor and I didn’t know these things were possible on the instrument. Buddy Rich is hands down the gold standard on speed, control, creativity, power and finesse in jazz drumming. The GOAT

Steve Gadd

Steve Gadd is a drummer that I had probably heard many times on many different songs in the past but didn’t know who he was until I was taught. His work with Paul Simon, Steely Dan and many others is legendary. His pocket, groove and application of rudimental drumming on the kit is what I aspire to sound like in my drumming today.

Jon Theodore

I wanted to choose a more modern drummer for my final spot. Jon Theodore’s drumming on the first couple Mars Volta albums is my absolute favorite work of all time. His blend of progressive rock and punk fused with Latin rhythms and his creative use of rudimental patterns for grooves is my favorite thing to listen to as a drummer and what makes me the most excited to get on a kit and start creating. These are the attributes that many people have described as my style of drumming.

Feedback Wanted Pedal Work Update.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So about 3 months ago I posted a video wanting feedback for my pedal work. Got lots of useful advice, along with starting actual drum lessons 2 months ago. I’ve changed a lot, I set my beaters back and tightened the springs. Also I’ve been trying to work on heel down and having my foot placed lower on the pedals. How am I doing?
Just a note, I’ve been playing for about a year and a third or so.
If you want you can look on my account for the old video to compare. But thank you for any advice/suggestions given.
