Sharing some pictures of my home studio drum kit. I was a drum instructor for about 15 years until COVID upended things, now I just play for fun. But I still am a gear collector at the end of the day.

This guy was a such an inspiration for me as a kid learning drums that somehow ended up digging prog metal in like 7th grade. Generally, I find a lot of prog music to either be somewhat grating to the ears or a little bit too self-indulgent, but this band always felt like they had a balance of technically savvy musicianship without compromising tasteful songwriting. Moe's drums are just so musical, never too flashy but with some nice flare when needed and always complimenting the track. This album came out in 2008 and although I don't know the exact ages of the guys who are/were in the band, I'm fairly positive they were in all in their early 20s at the time. A pretty insane accomplishment for some young kids from a small town in Ontario, Canada. Cheers to those fuckers, absolutely love em.

I just sold a GPU so I was browsing FB Marketplace, Sunday morning, for a guitar amp I could connect to my PC for writing and just popped up. I'm on Marketplace all the time and never saw it before. A 2006-2007 Copper Mist Metallic Tama Superstar. Shells and snare for $400! It's as clean as it looks. I'd did a little deep cleaning around the lugs and such when I swapped out the heads but it was pretty pristine.

When I picked it I was shooting the shite with the seller about lesser kits I see on FB for more money. He said he was often surprised by what sells and what sits around. He sells quite a bit of kit.

not asking for advice, i run a bare bones kit cause i tend to wander around and just meander with too much shit on my kit. not really looking to expand my load out.
no matter what gear i end up buying i almost always just take kick/snare/hat + a ride thats crashable to a jam sesh. maybe if im gigging and truly need more ill bring it, but it just has me thinking about all the expensive gear ive lusted over only to sit mostly unused, but i digress:

what is your 'take to a deserted island' cymbal? what genres do you play, & are you prioritizing anything in order to make this your definitive choice?

for me im taking a 22 inch 'name brand' on the thinner side of heavy (that i could not remember the model name of), i play everything from jazz & funk to metal & punk to breakcore, and im prioritizing stick definition and darker/warmer response over a nice washy brilliant cutting cymbal (any of my higher pitched cymbals i simply hate the way they scream if you dont give them a rest, the overtones that let it cut thru a mix are kinda painful/grating to me. im sure i can compensate for it or whatever but if it works it works, right)

I played drums consistently throughout my childhood into early 20s and then practically stopped altogether by 23ish.  i switched to different instruments and outside of the occasional fill in gig, I lost all desire to play drums and last time I played a gig as a drummer  was 10 years ago.

Sold my drums eventually and no longer claimed to be a “drummer” and was real self conscious anytime I sat behind a kit with how clumsy and foreign it felt. 

Joined this side project on a whim a couple months ago and after a month of sourcing new (used) gear and another month of trying to remember how to make it all work, had my First show back last Saturday and had a blast. 

When I first started learning drums, my uncle, who is an awesome drummer, as one of the first things he tried to teach me was keeping the left leg (only the heel, not opening or closing the hi hat) bouncing in quarters.

I find this as an amazing skill, when he tried to show me my leg kept shaking and tensing up, and I just gave up on it, never got to it.

I don't really struggle with keeping time or anything, but how do I actually get to mastering that leg movement? Any tips or exercises? Is it necessary? I'm definitely willing to spent time on it

John Bonham

The first drummer I heard as a kid that gave me a double take and blew my mind in a way that made me want to start drumming. His work with Led Zeppelin is considered among many, including myself to be of the most influential in rock drumming.

Buddy Rich

I first heard Buddy Rich in 2005 when I started attending Music School. My jaw was on the floor and I didn’t know these things were possible on the instrument. Buddy Rich is hands down the gold standard on speed, control, creativity, power and finesse in jazz drumming. The GOAT

Steve Gadd

Steve Gadd is a drummer that I had probably heard many times on many different songs in the past but didn’t know who he was until I was taught. His work with Paul Simon, Steely Dan and many others is legendary. His pocket, groove and application of rudimental drumming on the kit is what I aspire to sound like in my drumming today.

Jon Theodore

I wanted to choose a more modern drummer for my final spot. Jon Theodore’s drumming on the first couple Mars Volta albums is my absolute favorite work of all time. His blend of progressive rock and punk fused with Latin rhythms and his creative use of rudimental patterns for grooves is my favorite thing to listen to as a drummer and what makes me the most excited to get on a kit and start creating. These are the attributes that many people have described as my style of drumming.

okay i have a classical guitar i play but im starting to get tired of it and now i want to play drums because i can actual learn timing and patterns and music the only kit my school has on there website is the Roland td313 v-drums kit electronic drum set would it be good to learn on and practice as a person with no experience at all with drums
