Discussion Anyone interested in taking in some plants?

I am moving away from umd after graduating and sadly do not have the space to keep some of my plants. Some are also too large to easily transport. It’s breaking my heart a bit knowing i have to let go, i wanted to field if there would be interest from people local to college park who would want to come pick them up. Lmk! Size ranges, i would mostly be giving away larger stuff. Largest is an enourmous monstera deliciosa that’s easily 6ft tall and takes up like half the room. Sad to see my bb go :(.

Help Car Living

Has anyone (or currently) lived out of their car while a student? Looking for practical advice. Did you have a good spot to park at and sleep or did you have to go off campus to do so? Were the police down your throat or did they leave you alone? What did you do when it got really cold? How did less quality/overall sleep impact you over the semester? I’m considering hopping around and finding different places to sleep on campus during the day because no one cares about someone ‘napping’, and then finding diners or other 24/7 establishments during the night to study and pass time. Luckily this is a big school so I’m hoping no one will notice, but the winter could be a problem. Thanks :)

Help Diploma Damage

Anybody else get their diploma and have it look like the postal service played baseball with it before delivering? Mine came with the housing all dented so I knew it was gonna look a mess.

Kinda bummed it arrived like that. Haven’t even looked into potentially getting a replacement but was wondering if anyone’s had to deal with that at all and how easy that is to do. I live close by and would rather just come by and pick up a new one and not risk the damage again.

I’m an incoming transfer and I’m having some issues with the Transit app? I can’t see the UMD shuttles. I’ve gone through the link on the shuttle page and the Transit app is just telling me that the link doesn’t work.

Academic Any gen-ed recs for freshman bio major?

Any bio major students who have recommendations for Gen-Ed’s? For reference, I like genetics, cell biology, and really just looking for a chill class that still relates to biology.

Help Seeking On-Campus/Walkable Job

Hopefully even if the advice here doesn’t help me, it can help someone else.

I haven’t had much luck getting hired, except for a position that lasted 3 months and now does not exist. I do have some limitations to what I can do (for example, I have Type 1 Diabetes and the heat can make me sick, so I avoid kitchen work and that’s like the only thing I do avoid). I’ve worked in student facing jobs and I really love that kind of work. Another thing that really limits me is transportation (I have no car and literally no money to get one or services like Uber). I’ve applied on and off campus and it’s defeating to not hear anything or be rejected. I also don’t have a Work-Study offer and waiting on the appeal process to do its thing.

If you know anyone who wants to hire college students (maybe even like puppies because I do raise them), and is either on or extremely close to campus please let me know! I know it’s not easy out there and all but gotta keep going!

Discussion What is the CA job application status for everyone?

I applied for the CA job around mid June and still haven't heard anything back. I know a few people have already gotten offers though they applied before I did, so I'm just wondering. If you applied this cycle and have heard back, when did you apply and when did you receive your decision? If you're still waiting too, it'd be helpful to know that as well.

Help Any international students here who successfully waived UMD’s health insurance?

I’m an international student starting at UMD this fall as a junior. UMD is charging me about $3,000 for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), but I saw that it’s possible to waive it if you have your own insurance that meets their requirements. They mention that the plan must be ACA-compliant.
As an out-of-state international student, tuition is already incredibly expensive, so I’m trying to reduce my costs wherever I can.
Has anyone here successfully waived SHIP? If so:
● What insurance did you use?
● How much did it cost?
● Was the waiver process straightforward?
I’d really appreciate any recommendations or advice. Thank you!

Academic Is there any way I can get off the FIRE program waitlist?

I didn’t get invited to FIRE in my acceptance letter, so I had to apply through their website. I got my EA acceptance on February 1st and applied to FIRE on February 10th, which I think was still pretty early. In May, I got placed on the FIRE waitlist because of program capacity.

Is there any hope of getting off the waitlist? Does anyone have experience with this at all??? Should I email them to show my continued interest or just wait? In general are there a lot of people who drop FIRE during the add/drop session in september?

Academic What’s the difference between CHEM132 and CHEM132C?

From what I read, CHEM132C is for new freshmen in the Biological Sciences major or Neuroscience major. When I googled it, it said it’s for Bio-Fire living learning program which I’m not in but I am a Biological Sciences major. I’ve been registering for CHEM132 but I just rechecked my orientation advisor’s notes and it said to register for CHEM132C. I’m wondering if that could be a mistake or if I should actually register for that course.

Academic Idk about my schedule

Post image
0 Upvotes

Right now it’s only 12 credits which feels like it’s not that much compared to what my friends are taking. For context I’m entering my freshmen year and I did orientation online

Idk which Gen Ed’s I need to take since I have a decent amount of AP credits. I was recommended ENES210 but I was wondering if there’s a way to check exactly which gen eds I still need and how many credits I have to take.

I was also wondering how likely it is to get into ENES100A since I’m not an engineering student. I don’t want to waste too much time with an empty schedule so I have more space/time for a coop or an internship later on. I want to have a backup class if I don’t get into ENES100A for this semester

News Set of Keys Discovered on Campus

Post image

The pictured set of keys was found outside of Tawes Hall this evening (7/21/26), beside the patio seating with the umbrellas. Since Tawes was closed at the time of their discovery, the keys were handed over to the front desk at McKeldin Library. I hope the rightful owner finds them!

Help Understanding How Financial Aid Is Applied

I’m a little confused about how financial aid is applied to my eBill.

My eBill currently shows a balance, even though my accepted financial aid award should be more than enough to cover it. Does the financial aid automatically get applied to the balance closer to the beginning of the semester, or is there something else I need to do first?

I also noticed that, when I return to my financial aid offer page, I still have the option to “Submit Award Form to Student Financial Aid,” even though I already submitted it previously. Does this mean my award was not properly accepted, or does the button simply remain available after submission?

I just want to make sure my aid will be applied to my eBill before the payment deadline and that I do not need to resubmit anything. Has anyone else experienced this?

Help How to apply to defence companies for internships

I've never applied to defence companies so I was curious how do I apply to them and find ones which are specifically targetting UMD students. I know they come around for career fair but I want to apply early to stand out (specifically for CS internships as a sophmore). Thanks!

Discussion finally changed my major to Aerospace Engineering!!

Hey! I just switched into Aerospace Engineering after being in LTSC for so long and I’m looking to meet some people in the major before the semester starts. If you’re a rising sophomore (or around that point), it’d be cool to connect or just have someone else to suffer through ENAE classes with 😭
