Resource New community tool - ufosighting.report: an archive, map, and higher-effort way to report your sightings
Happy Friday, everyone!
Tmosh here, one of the mods. I've been quietly building something for the community that I'm finally ready to share: ufosighting.report
A little while back we asked the sub how we could improve things, and a big theme in the replies was the state of sighting posts. This comment from /u/-Nyarlabrotep- summed it up well:
A lot of the sighting posts here are easily explainable as balloons, clouds, out-of-focus drones and aircraft, or Venus/Jupiter. It does get old after a while. I don't know what the solution is, maybe require sighting posts to include why they're not those things somehow.
That's more or less the brief I ran with. Here's what the site does.
1. A living archive of our sightings
Good sightings get lost over time: people delete their accounts or posts, and Reddit eventually stops serving the media on older threads. This is a permanent, media-backed archive so those reports don't disappear.
It's already pre-loaded with over 8,000 sighting posts going back to early 2024, and every new post flaired Sighting gets pulled in automatically from here on, media and all.
2. An interactive map
Every sighting we could pin shows up on the map. Not every post included a clear date, time, and location, and people wrote them in wildly different formats, so it isn't perfect, but I've done my best to get it accurate for the majority.
You can filter by date, too. Try setting it to the New Jersey drone flap (mid-November to late December 2024) and watch the East Coast light up.
There's also a per-capita anomaly toggle. A raw heatmap of sightings is basically just a population map, of course the big cities have the most reports, they have the most people. Flip it on and it instead highlights where reports run unusually high for the local population. The hotspots move away from the cities and toward places like the desert Southwest. Make of that what you will.
3. Every sighting page checks the sky for you
This is the part that ties straight back to the feedback above. For any sighting with a location and time, the site automatically works out what was actually overhead:
- Whether the ISS was passing, or a Starlink train was visible
- Whether a rocket launched nearby around that time (Space X launches etc.)
- One-click links to historical aircraft traffic (ADS-B) for that day and a sky chart for that exact date and spot
Each archived post also keeps the top comments from the original thread, and surfaces possibly-related reports nearby in time and place, in case more than one person caught the same thing. And if you want to dig into a case yourself, there's a page of investigation resources.
4. A better way to post a sighting
This is the part I care about most: a structured submission form aimed squarely at that feedback. (First time? There's a quick step-by-step guide.)
It asks for real detail about what you saw, including the big one: "Why is this not a common object?" The idea is to get people thinking about (and ruling out) balloons, planes, Starlink, and Venus before posting, instead of a quick "what is this ORB??"
It also preserves your original media. Reddit re-encodes and compresses everything you upload. This doesn't. Upload straight from an iPhone and it keeps the original HEIC file untouched.
On upload it reads the file's own technical metadata (EXIF): camera and lens, exposure, capture time, GPS, even the compass direction you were facing, which lets people reconstruct your exact view of the sky and check it against satellites and flight paths. All of this is optional. After uploading you'll see exactly what your file contains, with checkboxes to publish or withhold the device info, timestamp, and location. If you withhold the location, the GPS is genuinely scrubbed from the published file, not just hidden.
Every post is verified to your account
After you submit, you'll get a DM from our new bot account, /u/ufosightingsbot, with a verification link. Open it, click through, and your sighting goes up on the sub instantly, credited to your username and marked as verified, so every submission is tied to a real account.
This is very much a work in progress. Feedback, bug reports, and feature ideas are all welcome, drop them in the comments or send me a message. Thanks for being the community that made it worth building.

I was backpacking in RMNP 2 weeks ago and saw this “vibrating” (?) light in the sky. It appeared to bounce back and forth but stayed relatively in the same area. At one point it faded out and came back. It seemed to have no rhythm to it.
It stayed there until I ended up falling asleep watching it.
Any thoughts?
Also side note, this was recorded with an IPhone 16 Pro Max. It’s incredible how bad the low light quality is.

Two eye witnesses, difficult to capture on camera, but we caught the end of it.
These looked like 2 stars, Light A and B for simplicity.
They were frozen still in the clear portion of the sky, just twinkling very close to each other. Then, Light A started moving like a shooting star heading "Toward" us in a sudden burst of velocity, but instead of vanishing after a streak of light, it continued to glow, and stood still again. It had a tail like a shooting star when it moved fast.
I thought maybe it was a satellite deployment or something, but it moved again, shooting a short distance in a different direction, then stopped still again.
It began to chase the Light B. Light B began moving gradually away from it. Not instantaneous movement with a sudden snap in velocity, but more like it began to "swim" away as Light A approached. Like, it was able to anticipate Light A approaching it, and choose the direction it wanted to move, and how quickly it wanted to move, despite appearing to be a free floating object. The way they moved was arguably playful. They chased each other in circles and streaked after one another across the sky. Their tails increased or decreased in length, depending on the speed they were moving, with 0 length when coming to a halt. This behavior is on display in the clip.
They were up against the bright part of the sky, which is why we thought they were stars, but the way they behaved felt like some kind of light projection, despite there being no clouds for them to be up against/projected on, so it was strange. We started filming, and they seemed to notice and began to descend.
They moved from over the road, to the right portion of the sky, over the fields and trees, making it difficult to film them.
This is where the clip starts, you can see them in the clear part of the sky before the trees begin to cut them off.
As they descend, you can see them chasing one another, spinning down toward the ground, disappearing behind the trees. No impact or flash, they just disappeared on the surface.
Did anyone else see this? Does anyone have any idea what these were?

Question Which camera should I buy?
Hey everyone, I’m hoping to get some advice from this community on upgrading my gear specifically for recording ufos and anomalies in the sky. I’ve been relying on my phone, but I want to move away from using my smartphone. As we all know, phone cameras just don't cut it for this kind of thing—the digital zoom completely destroys the image quality, and the small sensors fall apart in low-light conditions. I really want to be able to capture clear, detailed footage of distant or fast-moving objects, especially during the night and twilight hours.
Right now, my total budget is around $600, so I'm trying to figure out the absolute best setup I can get for that price. I'm prioritizing something with a massive optical zoom or a strong video capability so I can pull in those high-altitude objects without losing critical resolution. Because a lot of my observation time happens after dark, exceptional low-light performance is a major priority. I need something with clean high ISO video capabilities. I am also very open to exploring handheld digital infrared or night vision monoculars if you guys think those provide a better return on investment for nocturnal skywatching.
Beyond the lens reach and light sensitivity, focus reliability is another huge factor for me. It is incredibly frustrating when a camera constantly hunts for focus against a dark sky, so I need a device with fast, accurate autofocus but also a very intuitive manual focus override. Portability is equally important because I need to be able to deploy it quickly handheld if something suddenly appears, while still being able to mount it to a tripod for steady, long-term scanning.
Whether you suggest a specific superzoom bridge camera, a used mirrorless setup, or dedicated night vision optics, I’d love to hear your recommendations. What gear fits into that $600 range and has given you the best results? Thanks in advance for the help
Sighting I will be the first to admit my video sucks ass and I can't film for shit but has anyone else seen this sort of thing?

Disclosure Human-shaped object in US military UFO files intrigues Chinese expert
Amid a flurry of interest in newly declassified US government UFO files, a Chinese researcher has expressed intrigue in an apparent video of a fast-moving, human-shaped object.
Zhang Nan, a Beijing-based researcher into unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), said he was particularly fascinated by a nearly five-minute video, captured by a sky-facing US military infrared sensor in Florida in 2020.In the footage labelled “NAG UAP 1 Jun 20”, a humanoid-like shape hovered for a long time before abruptly moving to a distant location outside the frame.
“Assuming this wasn’t a sensor glitch and that we are looking at an actual, instantaneous displacement, AI-assisted analyses suggest the object’s acceleration could have exceeded 600g – or 600 times the force of gravity on Earth’s surface,” Zhang said.
To put that into perspective, human pilots typically black out at around 12g, and the most durable drones max out near 30g, he said.“A manoeuvre surpassing 600g is far beyond the limits of any known modern aircraft or living organism.”
However, given that the object lacked any visible propulsion system and appeared to change shape as it moved, he said that an object exceeding 600g “cannot be completely ruled out”.
As the declassified materials consisted almost entirely of photos and videos – rather than spectroscopic or radar data – their research value remained limited, he noted.“It’s highly likely the US government is withholding the materials that have genuine research potential,” Zhang said.

Historical Rama’s Mission to Paititi The Peruvian Contact Network known as Rama reported having a multiply witnessed on-board encounter deep in a remote rainforest locale called Paititi.
Introduction
The amazing story of Mission Rama dates to the 1970s. The first group of Rama volunteer contact workers had their initial encounters in Peru. Their experiences involved many sightings of what they described as “extraterrestrial craft” that were facilitated using a form of telepathic communication called automatic writing. The Mission Rama activists even reported having onboard encounters. Sixto Paz Wells and other Latin-American contactees have published books in Spanish describing their experiences. In my opinion, their narratives should be seriously studied by all contact and disclosure activists.
Representatives of both the North and South American Contact Networks Meet in Los Angeles.
In 1994 Fernando Limaco, a retired dental surgeon and experienced Rama leader drove down from the San Francisco Bay Area with several close supporters to meet with our Los Angeles based Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind Initiative (CE-5) team. A member of our group, Captain Joe Vallejo, was a United Airlines 747 pilot. He arranged for us to meet the Mission Rama representatives at his home located in the Simi Valley. Fernando’s talk was given entirely in Spanish with the help of simultaneous translation provided by his companions and Captain Vallejo. Having Joe there was extremely helpful because of his language skills and his excellent command of Latin American contactee literature. This combination of talents helped him translate some of the more advanced concepts of the Rama cosmology as presented by Dr. Limaco.
Mission Rama Started in Peru in 1974
Our Los Angeles CE5 team was very eager to hear what the Mission Rama people were prepared to tell us. I had given each member of my group a copy of an article published in “UFO Library Magazine” by Yolanda Marcino, a past United States Rama President. This authoritative document, in a rather obscure publication with limited circulation, described the early Mission Rama extraterrestrial encounters that started in Peru in 1974. Those contacts involved the experiences of university student Sixto Paz Wells and a group of his young friends. They reportedly had repeated encounters in the desert region near Lima called Chilca.
From Yolanda Marcino’s account, we also learned that Sixto and others had reportedly been transported via an inter-dimensional portal to an extraterrestrial base located on a moon of Jupiter. We know this satellite as Ganymede. Dr. Limaco spoke with authority as a seasoned Rama activist. That afternoon in the Joe Vallejo’s living room, we heard a spellbinding account of what in my opinion is an adventure demonstrating great courage and high ideals. Since 1993, I have followed the developments in Mission Rama. It now goes by the name Rahma. In Sanskrit, “Ra” signifies the heavens; “ma” means the Earth and the “h” in between the “Ra” and “ma”, stands for humanity. As a contact activist with 30 years of experience, in my judgment Rahma is still playing an important role in helping humanity build a cooperative relationship with flying saucer intelligences.
Dr. Limaco and his companions explained that it was Mission Rama’s custom to promote the development of psychic ability through meditation and certain other special mental exercises. Over time, many people in their network have become skilled in the practice of automatic writing. Telepathically received information is deemed accurate when multiple automatic writers working separately obtain the identical or at least very similar messages. (This is like the practice of remote viewing in which multiple viewers are independently tasked with the same target.) An individual that consistently channels accurate messages is described by Rama people as being a “good antenna.”
Rama’s Mission to Patiti
Our contact team was composed of middle-class people with good paying jobs. Among our ranks were three physicians working for the Southern California Permanente Group. Other members included Dr. Dixie Sullivan working as a clinical psychologist and her friend Dotha Weybourne, married to a wealthy lawyer. In contrast, Dr. Limaco’s team was mostly composed of immigrants, some newly arrived. Even those that were professionals in their nations of origin could be severely challenged by a new language and culture. Some didn’t have papers to work in the US. I later learned from Dr. Limaco that he had assisted Rama activists who were having problems with the INS, Immigration and Naturalization Service. Once in 1990, he even drove all the way to Salinas Valley to help a comrade file papers to avoid deportation. On the ride back to the Bay Area he had a remarkable sighting. It was late at night, and he reported hearing the word “Paititi” repeatedly in his mind. In a field nearby, he saw a disc shaped object hovering close to the ground. If I recall correctly, Dr. Limaco stated that when he first heard the word, he did not know that Paititi was a remote location deep in the Peruvian Andes rainforest.
Later in 1990, via mental communications received by multiple Rama activists in different locations, it became known that a major encounter was going to take place. This time it would not occur in Chilca, the desert site south of Lima. Instead, the location was Paititi in the remote jungle situated on the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains. According to Dr. Limaco, in 1990 there were no roads to Paititi. It was sparsely populated by indigenous people that had little contact with the rest of the country. The only way to get there was by foot and this meant trekking through densely forested jungle full of poisonous plants, insects, and snakes. Those chosen for the mission would have to cross rivers infested with alligators, some up to six feet long.
Automatic Writing Revealed Who Was Selected for the Jungle Mission
Via a series of telepathic communications, Rama people learned that six individuals for the perilous expedition would be selected by the alleged “ETs.” In Spanish. the Rama activists call them “los hermanos mayors” (older brothers). At a general meeting in Peru attended by over two hundred supporters, the question was asked, who in the audience would be willing to go on the mission to Paititi? Everyone in the crowd raised a hand to volunteer for the encounter. Later it became clear as the result of ongoing messages from the flying saucer intelligences, that if any of the six initially selected by the “extraterrestrials” could not participate, then there could be no substitutions. Only those specifically chosen by “los hermanos mayores” would be welcomed to journey on foot to the far distant jungle location.
According to Dr. Limaco’s account, the Rama people carried rice and beans as their only food during their trek to Paititi. They prepared these provisions nightly in a large cast iron pot. They were city people and not skilled woodsmen accustomed to the hardships of the rainforest. These Rama contact workers were, however, empowered by an intense desire for further contact with what they imagined was a technologically and ethically advanced extraterrestrial civilization. Daily prayer and meditation provided them with both emotional support and spiritual sustenance. They believed that they were somehow being protected by an unseen intelligence that was profoundly spiritual and desired their mission to succeed.
Battery Packs Were Mysteriously Drained
Dr. Limaco told us that they carried a video camera to document their anticipated encounter. After several days of marching into the jungle, they checked the camera’s batteries. The packs had been fully charged prior to their setting out for Paititi. To their dismay, they found that all the batteries were dead. The Rama team buried the now useless heavy equipment under a tall tree. They hoped to retrieve it on their way back to civilization.
The Hired Guide Warned Them of Danger
During the first portion of their trek, a hired guide led them further and further into the rainforest. He was well-aware of their destination and the risks to their safety that the journey entailed. The team used machetes to cut a path for themselves. After several days of hacking their way through the jungle their guide gave them this warning.
“I am not going on any further and neither are you! Because beyond this point the people out there eat people!
The Rama activists were disappointed to hear this disturbing pronouncement. They discussed their options, and the consensus was they would go on without the guide. Some days after exhausting trail blazing, they reportedly were so exhausted that they failed to cook supper. At nightfall, they crowded together in their small tent that was their only shelter. Despite being hungry, sleep came quickly.
One evening according to Dr. Limaco, they were so drained of strength that they threw themselves down on the sand adjacent to a river. Huddled together for warmth, they fell asleep. At daybreak, they were shocked to find themselves surrounded by poisonous snakes. They apparently had slithered up to the contact workers to keep warm. One might expect the vipers to bite their frightened human bedpartners, Instead the venomous creatures slowly moved away as the morning temperature rose. Rivers and streams provided the Rama group with freshwater for drinking and bathing. This vital resource, however, was also a source of danger. Alligators were abundant in the waters they had to cross.
A Grim Decision Was Made
Uncertain as to how long they could go on before someone sustained injury, they made a grim decision. If one or more were seriously wounded or became sick, the rest of the team would leave most of the supplies with the casualties. Those that could still go on, would do so, without the others. They promised one another that they would return to pick up the sick or wounded on the way back. Fortuitously, none sustained serious injury or became too ill to continue.
A Surprise Peace Offering
Another potential danger came from the indigenous peoples of the rainforest as mentioned above. These groups have their own languages and cultures. Historically they have had bad relations with the European influenced population of Peru. Encroachment on indigenous peoples’ hunting grounds by settlements of townspeople and forestry operation have resulted in mutual suspicion and even violent confrontations.
One day while passing through the indigenous people’s territory, the Rama group became frightened when a dugout canoe approached them. In the canoe were several native hunters armed with bows and arrows. However instead of expressing hostility towards the city people, the hunters volunteered to help “guide them on their mission.” As astounding as this may sound, it was Doctor Limaco’s impression that their arrival had been heralded by the ETs via telepathic messages sent to the hunters. The indigenous people were reportedly given instructions to help the Mission Rama emissaries. One hunter in a supreme act of solidarity insisted that Dr. Limaco take his hunting bow as a peace offering. This prized possession was the instrument by which the hunter fed his family and Dr. Limaco recognized its importance as a gift.
As the Rama contact workers approached Paititi, their spirits rose. The telepathic communications that they were receiving were getting stronger and clearer. At night around the campfire, they carried out Rama prescribed mental exercises. They reportedly experienced profoundly peaceful states that reassured them that their mission would be successful.
They Arrive at Paititi
The night before reaching Paititi, each member of the team had an out-of body experience. As described to me by Dr. Limaco, each was mentally taken on-board a large ET craft that was waiting for them some one day’s marching distance away. The next morning, they continued trudging through the jungle. Although exhausted, their spirits were high because they knew that they did not have much further to go. Finally, they arrived at Paititi. Hovering above a clearing in the jungle, they encountered a large ET craft. Everyone immediately recognized it from the out of body experience of the previous night. This time the Rama team physically went onboard via a blue tractor beam that transported them one by one into the belly of the hovering ship.
The Planet Earth as a Spiritual Dynamo
The ET group that hosted them is known as the “Great White Brotherhood.” (This designation unfortunately sounds like the one used by criminal gangs of white nationalists.) The “ETs” received this designation because on repeated encounters the beings of this group all wore white robes. The Rama people were informed by their non-human hosts how vitally important Rama’s mission was. The goal was reportedly awesome in scope and involved nothing less than the spiritual transformation of humanity. This achievement would presumably set the stage for open contact with spiritually and technologically advanced non-human civilizations.
According to the “ETs”, this transformation was happening not only on Earth, but throughout the entire galaxy as well. As reported to the Rama missionaries, vast numbers of advanced ET civilizations were awaiting a spiritual leap forward on our planet. This supposedly would allow us to join them in a galactic civilization of technologically and ethnically advanced star systems. The Rama activists explained that the Earth was a “spiritual dynamo.” A massive expansion of human consciousness on Earth would provide a psychic energetic boost to the civilizations that were assisting us. In the process, they would be lifted to the next wrung of their spiritual evolutionary ladder. They were helping us, and our transformation would be helping them to achieve their destiny.
Undeniably, critics of this narrative will point out that this all sounds like a New Age oriented Star Trek episode. The Rama activists however are real people. As documented by numerous media reports in Latin America, they have an established track record of co-creating with the non-human intelligences associated with UFOs what I call Human Initiated Contact Events (HICE). And they have been doing this since the 1970s.
If this account is accurate, as I believe it is, then the story of Dr. Limaco and his companions serves as an inspiration for contact activists and UFO truth seekers alike. In my opinion, their astounding story should inspire people all over the world to actively engage the intelligences responsible for the flying saucer phenomenon. Who knows, perhaps in a generation or two, the courageous efforts described in this narrative will no longer be so unusual?
It is conceivable that someday, dozens of contact teams all over the world might be replicating the astounding work of the contact network now called “Rahma.”

Question Round metallic sphere followed by a military jet in Washington state.
Around June of 2022 I had stepped out of my home because I heard the usual fighter jets flying overhead towards whidbey island, upon looking up I saw what appeared to be a silver orb/sphere almost the size of the jet that was following it at a low 3 o clock position as it disappeared over the mountains to the west. Has anyone else seen a similar object or that same object from that time frame?

Historical UFOs causing abrupt engine failure: Krasuski's story and documented examples
I found an interesting story by Wladyslaw Krasuski AKA Walter who in response to a radio story talking about a "mysterious vehicle" causing engine stalls in Texas reached out to a Mr. Robert Cutler - Special Assistant to President Eisenhower. This story reminded me of multiple incidents compiled by Jacques Vallee in the report Scientific Intelligence - General - Unidentified Flying Objects (starting in page 24) in which there are an incredible many similar incidents - attached are just a few.
It's strange that the Germans were interacting with this craft out in the open, could they have been experimenting with a crashed saucer that they only had time to cover up or perhaps they were testing a secret developmental vehicle (ARV?) The fact that UFOs producing the same effect were documented in the US and other countries is strange and shows Germany couldn't have been the only ones with this capability. What do you guys think?

The following are several similar documented examples from the attached report:

Sighting Sighting Keswick ON, Canada
July 22nd 2026 at 10:10pm
West same direction of the moon tonight.
I was about to hop into bed and I looked out the window and saw it right away, a very bright light in the sky. Looked at it for a while, opened flightradar and saw no signs of any aircraft, it was too large to be a star or planet. Looked at it then looked back down to get my phone out for not even a second, and it was just gone. It was bright and orange, you could not miss it.

Historical Do Historical “Sky Battles” Resemble Modern UAP Reports? A Source-Critical Study of Nuremberg 1561, Basel 1566, Stralsund 1665, and the PURSUE Files
A brief note before reading
I realize that posts of this length are unusual on Reddit. I initially considered reducing the subject to a few images and short observations, but when examining historical broadsheets alongside modern UAP documents, the surrounding context is part of the evidence. Dates, original wording, transmission history, visual conventions, and the quality of the available documentation all matter. In this case, shortening the material too much would risk removing precisely the details needed for a meaningful comparison.
To make the post easier to navigate, I have included a TL;DR, clear sections, illustrations, and direct links to the underlying sources.
TL;DR: Historical broadsheets and modern UAP files contain strikingly similar motifs, including spheres, disks, formations, fire, and sudden disappearance. This study explores whether these parallels could reflect recurring physical phenomena while also considering differences in documentation, historical context, and interpretation. The available evidence does not yet support a definitive conclusion, but the similarities warrant careful and open-minded investigation.
Abstract
This study compares early modern sky phenomena from Nuremberg 1561, Basel 1566, Stralsund 1665, and the Augsburg Book of Miracles with PURSUE files released in 2026. It separates possible events from eyewitness reports, media transmission, and later interpretation. Recurring motifs include spheres, disks, rods, fire, formations, battles, sounds, and sudden disappearance, which may have natural, technological, perceptual, or narrative causes. [1] [2] [4] [26] [30] [36]
Keywords: prodigies, broadsheet, celestial apparition, UAP, PURSUE, source criticism, AARO, orbs, media history
Consensus-compatible core finding: Similar forms in images and reports are initially similarities of motif. Without contemporaneous measurements, traceable provenance, and independent corroboration, they cannot be treated as evidence of the same physical cause. [36]
1. Research Question and Scope
The guiding question is: What claims about unusual celestial phenomena are justified when early modern illustrated prints are compared with modern UAP files? The comparison is useful because certain descriptions recur. It is also risky because the sources were produced under entirely different conditions. A sixteenth-century broadsheet is not a sensor log, and a declassified government memorandum is not a physical finding. This study therefore does not examine 'UFOs through the centuries,' but the relationship among observation, transmission, visual form, and evidentiary status. [37]
The corpus is selective and comparative rather than globally comprehensive. Nuremberg 1561, Basel 1566, and Stralsund 1665 provide the historical starting points. Directly comparable broadsheets and works of art from digital collections are added, together with the latest PURSUE documents relevant to sphere, disk, rod, and swarm motifs. The scale of the historical material is visible in the portals: the e-manuscripta search for 'Himmelserscheinung' returns 101 results, while the Frankfurt Freytag collection contains 19 relevant broadsheets. The appendix makes the selection transparent and links to the originals. [24] [25]
2. Method: Strictly Separating Four Levels
The analysis follows classical source criticism and a simple hierarchy of evidence. For each case, it records the date and the source's proximity to the event, the identity and number of observers, stages of transmission, the medium's purpose and genre, available measurements or images, and alternative explanations.
| Level | Test question | What the source actually establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Event | Was there a physical process? | Directly testable only through measurements, traces, or reproducible observation. |
| 2 Report | Who saw or heard what, when, and from where? | That a claim about an event was made; not automatically that its physical interpretation is correct. |
| 3 Representation | Who shaped text and image, and for what purpose? | Media selection, compression, symbolism, and convention. |
| 4 Interpretation | What explanation was offered at the time or later? | A worldview and interpretive frame, not the identity of the phenomenon. |
Methodological synthesis; for the modern data situation, compare NASA and PURSUE's own classification. [26] [36]
Terminological rule: In PURSUE, 'unresolved' means that no definitive determination can be made, often because the data are insufficient. It means neither 'extraterrestrial' nor 'technologically superior.' [26]
3. The Early Modern Media Framework
Books of prodigies and broadsheets combined news, imagery, religious admonition, and political commentary. The Augsburg Book of Miracles arranges 167 surviving folios into a History of Salvation from the Old Testament through antiquity and the present to Revelation. Its sources probably included chronicles, older broadsheets, engravings, illustrations, and notes. This compilatory structure explains why image and date cannot be treated like a modern eyewitness record. [7]
Even contemporary broadsheets were not neutral substitutes for a camera. They compressed a narrative into a memorable scene and interpreted striking apparitions as divine warnings, omens of war, or calls to repentance. This makes them excellent sources for the history of perception and media. For physical reconstruction, however, they are only starting data with major uncertainties. [1] [2] [3] [6] [37]
4. Three Foundations
4.1 Nuremberg, 14 April 1561
Hans Glaser's colored broadsheet shows a dense ensemble above Nuremberg: spheres, crosses, semicircles, elongated tubes or rods, a black spear-like form, and smoking crash sites. The accompanying text explicitly relates the apparition to divine omnipotence. The print is therefore both a report and a work of theological visual rhetoric. Its many forms should not be read as a scale technical drawing; they organize motion, conflict, and warning within a single visual field. [1]

The surviving source establishes the printed interpretation, not the technological nature of individual forms. Digitization with color and scale reference; Public Domain Mark. Source: [1]
4.2 Basel, 27/28 July and 7 August 1566
The sheet printed by Samuel Apiarius and associated with Samuel Coccius reports three apparitions. Later reception has focused on black and bright spheres around the Sun, described as if they were fighting formations. The text calls for repentance and divine aid against the Ottoman threat. A particularly important point for source criticism is that, according to the Swiss National Museum, Apiarius and Coccius were not direct eyewitnesses; they worked from first- and second-hand reports. [2] [3]

4.3 Stralsund, 8 April 1665
The Leipzig sheet of 1665 is the earliest known illustrated account of the Stralsund case. Six fishermen were said to have seen flocks of birds offshore that transformed into battle fleets and fought amid fire, smoke, and noise. Later, a flat, round form appears above St Nicholas's Church. The print labels its scenes with letters and explains them in the text. It is therefore contemporary, but still a journalistic product rather than the fishermen's immediate record. [4] [5] [6]

The later plate in Erasmus Francisci's Der wunderreiche Überzug unserer Nider-Welt (1680) made the disk shape more visually explicit and influenced modern UFO reception. The Berlin exhibition shows, however, that the disk is by no means stable across the transmission: it appears differently in the 1665 sheet and is absent from some texts. A mirage of distant ships is a possible but unproven explanation; the museum's research could not identify a specific naval engagement. The media transformation is therefore established more securely than the physical cause. [5] [6]

The aerial fleets appear at left, while the round form later made prominent above Stralsund appears in the center and at right. 5. Two Folios from the Augsburg Book of Miracles
5.1 The Alleged Event of 1009
Folio 35 shows a darkened Sun, a blood-red Moon, and a burning column- or tower-like torch said to have fallen from the sky with a great crash; death and famine in Germany and Italy allegedly followed. The image was made around 1552, approximately 543 years after the claimed event. Its great value lies in the early modern visualization of older chronicle material. As evidence of what physically occurred in 1009, it is a very late secondary or tertiary transmission. [7] [8]

5.2 The 'Golden Ball' and the Dating Problem
The folio bears the date 73 BCE and shows a golden sphere in several positions above a landscape. Its textual motif, however, closely matches Julius Obsequens, Liber Prodigiorum 54: in the consular section dated to 91 BCE, a golden-colored fireball is described in the territory of Spoletium, rolling down toward the ground, moving eastward, and covering the Sun. The discrepancy in date and the roughly fifteen-hundred-year chain of transmission show why the image cannot count as an independent ancient observation. It is an early modern image of an ancient textual tradition. [7] [9] [10] [11]

Fig. 6. Augsburg Book of Miracles, 'Golden Ball,' around 1552. Three positions of the same sphere can be read as a sequence of motion. The printed or written date of 73 BCE does not match the corresponding consular section in Julius Obsequens. Reproduction of a public-domain work. Source: [9] [10]
Chain of transmission Ancient prodigy text -> early modern compilation -> modern digitization -> present-day UAP interpretation. Each step may add selection, shifts in dating, and a new visual vocabulary. [7] [10] [11]
6. Further Comparable Broadsheets, Texts, and Works of Art
6.1 Plech 1554: Celestial Battle as Military Visual Language
Thiebold Berger's sheet reports an apparition seen near Plech on 11 June 1554. Two mounted armies fight in the sky; below lie a fallen man and dead horses. Even if an optical or astronomical trigger is assumed, the specific battle scene is a cultural translation. It shows that 'battle in the sky' was already available as an established reading before Nuremberg and Basel. [15]

6.2 A Wave of Prints in 1561
The sheets concerning Mansfeld/Eisleben (27 February) and Emskirchen (4 March) appeared only weeks before Glaser's Nuremberg print. Taken together, they do not automatically constitute one connected large-scale physical event, but they do reveal a dense culture of news and imagery. Celestial forms, military symbolism, personified heavenly bodies, and local urban spaces could rapidly be translated into related print formulas. [16] [17] [1]

6.3 Schwerin 1628 and Mittelfischach 1667
The Schwerin sheet names a duke and 'many hundreds of persons' as observers. The library catalog explicitly indexes the apparition under parhelia and rainbow. The Mittelfischach sheet, by contrast, shows a broad apparition spread across a landscape. Both cases demonstrate how readily circular, arched, and ray-like sky optics entered the language of prodigies. [18] [19]

6.4 Fire and Fireball Broadsheets of 1697: Metz, Lübeck–Mecklenburg, and Hamburg
The Metz broadsheet describes “terrible cannonading and shooting” in the sky. The Threefold Prodigy of 1697, by contrast, compiles three geographically distinct reports: a two-tailed comet observed on 4 November 1697 (Old Style) in the Lübeck district toward Mecklenburg, accompanied by a cross-shaped apparition over the Hamburg horizon; and a stillborn child described as congenitally malformed, reported in Buchholz near Annaberg. By combining these different phenomena within a single moralizing composition, the print associates celestial light, sound, warfare, bodily anomaly, and divine punishment. The accounts may preserve observations of real luminous or acoustic events, but the broadsheet reorganizes them into a theological and journalistic narrative of warning and repentance. [20] [21]

6.5 Hatford 1628: When a Celestial Report Leaves a Physical Trace
The English pamphlet Looke Vp and See Wonders describes light, battle-like noises, and falling stones. An observed meteorite fall at Hatford is officially recognized; the Meteoritical Bulletin Database records the year 1628 and a total mass of 29 kg. This case does not prove that other reports of battles, spheres, or disks were also meteors. It does show, however, that an early modern prodigy report can contain a real cosmic body when independent material evidence is added. [22] [3]
7. PURSUE: Archival Status and Evidentiary Value
PURSUE stands for Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters. The first release appeared on 8 May 2026; the fourth, and latest as of this study's cutoff date, appeared on 10 July 2026. The portal includes declassified recent cases as well as historical documents. 'Newly released' must therefore not be confused with 'new event.' The 1949 Los Alamos file is the clearest example. [26] [27] [28] [33]
| Release | Publication | Relevance to this study |
|---|---|---|
| Release 01 | 8 May 2026 | Initial publication, including the Western U.S. slides and the FBI memorandum. |
| Release 02 | 22 May 2026 | ODNI first-person narrative by a senior intelligence official. |
| Release 03 | 12 June 2026 | AARO update with a partial attribution of the Western U.S. case. |
| Release 04 | 10 July 2026 | Historical Los Alamos file and new IR-video cases. |
Release dates according to the official PURSUE portal. [26] [28]
The portal defines the archived materials as unresolved cases for which no definitive determination can be made. It expressly identifies insufficient data as one possible reason. This statement is methodologically more important than any spectacular individual description: it marks the limit of the available record. [26]
8. The PURSUE Cases with the Closest Motif Parallels
8.1 Western U.S., October 2023: 'Orbs Launching Orbs'
The initial slides report that six federal personnel, working in three two-person teams, saw orange 'parent orbs' at dusk on two days, with two to four red lights emerging from each. The pattern allegedly repeated at least five times, and no sound was noticed. Yet the initial file already identifies a central deficit: no photographs, videos, or other technical data were collected for the orb event. [29] [30]

Fig. 12. First PURSUE slide on the Western U.S. event. It documents a summarized witness account, not an image of the reported orbs. The visualizations in later slides are expressly reconstructions or artists' renderings. Source: [29]
AARO's update of 5 June 2026 is analytically much stronger. AARO compared narrative accounts with flight logs, radar, ADS-B, and training data. Its conclusion was that approximately 60 percent of the reported activity is plausibly consistent with specialized military IR countermeasure flares. No matching known flight activity was found for roughly 40 percent; moreover, a red light allegedly remaining stationary for hours would be inconsistent with the burn time and descent rate of known flares. AARO therefore lists 'unrecognized technology' as a preliminary hypothesis based on elimination, but stresses that it rests entirely on narrative testimony and is supported by neither technical data nor physical evidence. [30]

8.2 ODNI First-Person Narrative, Late 2025
A first-person account by a senior member of the U.S. Intelligence Community, published in Release 02, describes observations with the unaided eye, night vision, FLIR, and reported radar indications. It mentions an object splitting apart, 'countless' orange orbs, two large oval lights, a T formation, and lights above fighter jets. The release, however, includes neither raw data from the cited sensors nor images of the event. Scientifically, it is therefore a detailed, officially archived testimony, but not a verified multisensor analysis. [31]

Fig. 14. Page 2 of the ODNI narrative, including passages on the swarm, T formation, and lights above jets. The page is the published narrative itself; it contains no associated radar, FLIR, or NVG raw data. Source: [31]
8.3 FBI Memorandum, September 2023: Metallic 'Cigar' Object
The redacted FBI memorandum describes a bronze-colored, cigar-shaped apparition with an extremely bright ring-like light, approximately two to three Black Hawk lengths in size, silent, nearly hovering, and gone after five to ten seconds. Two people reportedly saw it; no images were taken. The form also states that the memorandum contains neither FBI recommendations nor conclusions. It therefore documents a recorded statement, not institutional confirmation of an unknown craft. [32]

8.4 Los Alamos 1949: Old File, New Release
Release 04 contains the record of a classified conference on 'Aerial Phenomena' held on 16 February 1949. Lincoln LaPaz compared green or yellow-green fireballs with conventional meteorite falls and emphasized horizontal trajectories, color, and duration. The document is valuable for the history of science because specialists discuss measurement problems, observational limits, and hypotheses. It does not, however, provide a retrospective definitive identification. Its publication in 2026 does not change the evidentiary status of the 1948/49 events. [33]

Fig. 16. Excerpts from the 1949 Los Alamos conference record: the participant list and LaPaz's description of a green-yellow fireball. The historical file was made publicly available as a package only in PURSUE Release 04. Source: [33]
8.5 PR104 and PR115: Sensor Images Are Not Self-Explanatory Object Portraits
In a 2025 IR video over the Yellow Sea, PR104 shows a contrast area that the official description likens to a six-pointed star. AARO explicitly cautions that this description should not be read as an analytic judgment, investigative conclusion, or statement of fact. The shape on the display is therefore, first of all, a shape in a sensor-data product. [34]

PR115 is particularly important as a methodological control case. In the eight-second IR video from 2019, a contrast area flickers and at times blends into the background. AARO explains that an object at a temperature similar to its surroundings may appear to flicker or disappear because of dynamic contrast adjustment and auto-gain. An apparent change of form or disappearance should therefore not be interpreted as a physical transformation without sensor analysis. [35]

9. Comparison: What Is Similar - and What Is Not
The formal similarities are real, but initially they exist at the level of description. Both groups of sources contain spheres, swarms, formations, rods or cigars, disks, fire, apparent emergence, and disappearance. The following comparison reduces the cases to the smallest common observational statement while identifying the missing information required for physical identification.
| Motif | Historical examples | PURSUE examples | Scientific limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spheres / orbs | Basel 1566; Nuremberg 1561; Golden Ball | Western U.S.; ODNI narrative | The same verbal form reveals nothing about distance, size, material, or cause. |
| Swarm / battle | Plech; Nuremberg; Basel; Stralsund | ODNI swarm; repeated groups of orbs | Ordered motion may be produced physically, perspectivally, or narratively. |
| Rod / cigar | Nuremberg tubes and black spear | FBI-'cigar' | Without distance and orientation data, projection into a three-dimensional form is uncertain. |
| Disk | Stralsund, especially 1680 | No equally strong case in the selected PURSUE corpus | The Stralsund disk changes within the transmission itself. |
| Fire / fall | Augsburg 1009; Metz; fireball 1697; Hatford | Los Alamos fireballs | Meteors are possible and materially documented at Hatford, but are not a universal explanation. |
| Disappearance | Spheres dissolve; ships disappear | FBI; ODNI; PR115 | PR115: auto-gain can alter visibility; historical media compress events narratively. |

10. The Evidence-Based Consensus Supported by This Corpus
1 Securely established For centuries, people and institutions have described unusual celestial apparitions and represented them in recurring forms. The historical prints and modern files are genuine artifacts of this transmission. [1] [2] [4] [26]
2 Well supported Several motif classes have known natural, technological, or sensor-based counterparts. Stockholm, Hatford, the flare correlation, and PR115 provide specific controls. [14] [22] [30] [35]
3 Unresolved Some reports cannot be determined conclusively because data are missing or unpublished. 'Unresolved' is a state of the evidence, not a distinct class of object. [26] [30] [36]
4 Not established The material examined provides no evidence of extraterrestrial origin, non-human beings, recovered foreign technology, or the bestowal of technology on humans. NASA states that there is no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial and that the limited number of high-quality observations currently prevents scientific conclusions about the nature of many cases. [36]
The most cautious overall conclusion is therefore that there is continuity in motifs of perception and representation, but no demonstrated continuity of a single physical cause. To infer the same technological object from sphere-like forms spanning two thousand years is to skip precisely the steps that source criticism and natural science must test. [7] [10] [30] [36]
11. Limitations of the Study
First, the historical corpus is a representative selection rather than a globally complete collection. Second, most early modern reports do not permit weather, viewing geometry, duration, and observer position to be reconstructed with modern precision. Third, images are not raw recordings; PURSUE also sometimes releases only narratives, redacted memoranda, or brief sensor excerpts with little context. Fourth, future PURSUE releases or additional raw data may change these assessments. All statements therefore apply to the source record available as of 20 July 2026. [24] [25] [26] [28]
12. Conclusion
Nuremberg 1561, Basel 1566, and Stralsund 1665 show how unusual celestial phenomena were depicted as battles, spheres, rods, disks, and divine warnings. The Augsburg folios and comparative cases also reveal problems of transmission and demonstrate that natural phenomena and meteorite falls entered the same visual tradition. [1] [2] [4] [7] [8] [9] [14] [22]
PURSUE adds declassified records, flight and radar data, and sensor footage. Some cases have partial explanations, such as military flares, while others remain unresolved. Across the centuries, recurring motifs are evident, but their physical causes cannot yet be identified conclusively. [26] [30] [34] [35] [36]
