Please set a user flair with your pronouns

After some helpful suggestions from our members we have made some changes to our flair system.

  • You are invited to display your preferred pronouns in your flair. We hope this will help avoid misunderstandings.
  • All user flairs can be edited when you select them
  • From today you will receive guidance when posting or commenting to choose a flair.
  • In the coming weeks, users who don't have text in their flair indicating preferred pronouns will receive an automated chat message suggesting they update their flair.
  • When we have sufficient feedback on the system and the availability of default flairs, we intend to require anyone posting or commenting to have set a user flair and this will be enforced at the point of posting where you currently receive a guidance message.

Let us know how well this works for you.

Discussion 1% of the population

This statistic is frequently cited (more accurately it is 0.5-2%) as the number of trans people in the world. Frequently used to belittle us and make us unimportant.

It gets me thinking, what would the number be if no one had to hide for their own safety. If no one felt so unsafe they repressed or spent their whole lives in denial of themselves. If everyone could just be free to be exactly who they want to be with no fear, what would that number look like?

It's more than fucking 1 that is for sure.

Progress (FTM) I was treated like a boy today and it confused me

For so many years, it's always been confusion I got from people. My family will always struggle to see me as a man, because they raised a beautiful girl, and why would I want to throw all their memories away? At work, I still have to go to women's changing room and restroom. They think it's unnecessary for me to switch. When called out for my turn in a karaoke bar, the DJ always double questioned if I'm REALLY sure I'm [insert male name] because I certainly do not look like it.

Taking Chinese classes in college gave me an opportunity to go on a 12 day trip to China for a very cheap price. I don't know most of the participants, so it's a fresh start for me with these people. Today, during supper, I was sat with a family of four, father, mother, daughter and son. Let me just tell you, I was SO confused when after asking for my name and getting a response, instead of going "oh but isn't that a boy's name?", they asked for specific spelling of it because the son had a similar sounding name. And, after I mentioned I had a twin sister, they pointed out how "I've always must have been such a gentleman after letting my sister come out of the womb first" (lol). Not once have they questioned my gender, and none of the usual phrases like, "you were born a girl, right?", "oh but you look very feminine", "wait so what's down there?" phrases were said. I awaited the embarassing questions I always get, and was caught off guard by how they viewed me as a human. I legit forgot how to speak. I genuinely think they see me as a cis man. For the first time in my life. I had a strong urge to correct them, to go "wait I'm trans haha, you're getting it wrong," because not correcting them about me being born a man felt like lying. But I was so, so happy I stayed quiet and finally let myself be myself instead of feeling the obligation to out myself to avoid any misunderstandings and shame, whether in uni or at work or in public spaces.

I'm 19 and barely 4 months on T and this is already how far I've gotten. I'd never say I pass enough, but since I started HRT more and more people started seeing me as a boy, even if they sometimes worded it as 'confusion' once they took a better look at me. I love life. I've never felt happier. It really does get better, friends :)

Non Binary I’ve never been more afraid of existing

Genocide scholars, including experts from the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, warn that the U.S. is in the early-to-mid stages of a genocidal process against transgender people.
This assessment is driven by surging anti-trans legislation, identity erasure, and rhetoric that scholars argue matches historical precursors to mass atrocities.

Key context from experts and researchers:
• Scholarly Warnings: Organizations like
Genocide Watch and the Lemkin Institute state that policies targeting transgender
Americans echo the historical indicators of genocide. They argue these actions aim to completely erase the trans community from public life.

• Legislative Action: The Trans Legislation Tracker reports a 668% increase in anti-trans bills considered in state legislatures over the past few years. These measures primarily target healthcare, education, and identity recognition.

Questioning Is it weird that I want to be trans?

AMAB
I feel like the title says everything
Told very few people I’m questioning my gender identity
Ive decided on a name if I was to transition and if I was given the opportunity to be a woman rn with no consequences I would definitely take the opportunity
But I can’t help but feel like I’m just saying it cos it sounds cool or something idk😭😭

Anyway I also don’t think I experience much/any dysphoria
But even despite that, I still want to be trans. Is that weird? Do I just like the idea of it? Is that something anyone else went through?

Trans Masculine Transphobic Brother

Upvotes

(For context: I’m not out and do not pass as a dude, people tend to get confused and ask if I’m a guy or girl. I am not on testosterone yet due to age)

Lately, my 13 year old younger brother has been bringing up transgender people a lot.
The first time he brought it up he was absolutely convinced that transgender women were called transgender men because “they’re men though”. And vice versa. He was so convinced of this and didn’t believe me when I told him he was wrong that I eventually had to get him to google the definitions.

He’s brought it up a couple of times now, always along the lines of “tr*nsgender m*n are w*men” and “tr*nsgender w*man are m*n”, because “that’s just what they are”

(Excuse the stupid censoring, reddits filters removed this the first time)

He brought it up today and he was just being ridiculous, talking about if “a bird identified as a cat”??? I had to tell him that transgender people aren’t trying to change species 😭
He’s also a big fan of the “I identify as [inanimate object/animal]” shtick.

He did say though “if you were transgender, I would call you a boy, but you’d still be a girl”

How can I get him to stop thinking this way? I’ve told him that what he’s saying isn’t very nice but he isn’t listening to me. I can’t bring it up with my parents because if I get too defensive over this they’ll suspect I’m transgender, which has happened in this past. It also probably doesn’t help that I start laughing at the sheer stupidity of what he’s saying

He’s not a bad kid either, he’s generally nice. He has no problem with gay people, only transgender people seemingly.
He’s very caught up on the idea that gender is determined at birth and cannot be changed no matter what.

Discussion When is it ok to use one’s old pronouns? For me I do not mind whatsoever.

Hello, Agender creature here (Actually trans girl), specifically I do not want to offend or harm anyone, nor make anyone feel uncomfortable about this post.

I want to ask according to the title, when is it ok for someone to let you use their old pronouns? Is it strict consent? Legal stuff? Safety or anything else? How will it affect trans men/women?

For me, since I am Agender, I do not give a single fuck about pronouns. It’s any so I don’t care, you can call me a man or woman or creature i suppose.

This is because I got so confused, i hit rock bottom. To avoid having any mental breakdowns about whenever i am a boy or girl, I just say “fuck it, we ball with ALL pronouns.” And boom, thats how I figured myself out.

Advice Advice for a party for a trans friend

So, here is the thing. A friend of my group of friends just came out (is that the correct espression?) as a trans woman. She lives far away from the rest of my friends and for the first time since she became a woman she mis going to come back.
My friends and I thought of making her a surprise party to celebrate and, well, do something fun/stupid. a.k.a: A "gender party" (as you would when revealing the gender of a newborn)

But there is an important question related to this: another friend of ours thought of dressing in the opposite gender for the party. All the male friends with women clothing, and viceversa.
But another another friend that will be at the party was thinking that it may be offensive.

As trans people here, what do you think? Would it be offensive if we gave her a surprise party with everyone dressing as the opposite gender?

Trans Feminine “That’s because you were never a man.”

2.0k Upvotes

Today my wife accidentally gave me one of the most affirming moments I’ve ever had.

Today my wife and I were watching tv. The guys kissed another girls and basically played 2 girls and. At one point all the guys were comparing the things the girls did to the guys saying “you did the same thing” and I got a little heated because it wasn’t even close to the same thing.

I kept saying, “I don’t get it! How are these guys so stupid? Do they not see it, or do they just not care?”

My wife just shrugged and laughed “They’re men.”

I said, “I would never do that.”

Without missing a beat, she said,
“That’s because you were never a man.”

…what?!?!. I just kinda froze.

She wasn’t trying to reassure me or make a point. She just said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Hearing the person who knows me better than almost anyone say something so casually hit me like a hug… and a punch in the face.

My brain short circuited for the rest of the night. She kept asking if I was okay looking super confused… that made it worse because she genuinely had no idea what she said. I don’t even think she realized she said it.

Gender affirmed, mind blown. Anyone else experience this?

Celebration Why this matters to me

I want to share something that's been on my mind.

I'm not trans.

But I've always felt drawn to the trans community.

Maybe it's because so many of the questions that seem to follow trans people have followed me, too.

Questions about identity. About belonging. About who you are when the world wants simple answers and you don't fit neatly into them.

I've never felt completely at home in the categories I was given. I'm autistic, I have ADHD, and I've spent much of my life feeling slightly outside of things, trying to understand where I belong.

Of course, my experience is not the same as being trans, and I would never claim that it is.

But I have always felt a deep sense of connection, admiration, and care.

Right now, I'm working on a commission from a sister for her trans brother, and it has reminded me once again how much courage it takes to live authentically in a world that doesn't always make that easy.

Because of that, I decided that a portion of the profits from future prints of this artwork will be donated to a trans organization.

It's not a grand gesture.

It's simply my way of saying:

I see you.

I care about you.

And I'm grateful that you exist.

To me, trans people represent something incredibly powerful: the courage to become yourself, even when the path is difficult.

You have my respect, my support, and a place in the Candy Decay universe.

You matter.

And you are loved.

Vent It's 2 am and I can't sleep

Upvotes

I need to vent

So, a few days ago a trans friend of mine called me an egg for fun after we had a conversation. At the time, I found that funny. It lead me here.

After discovering that I am bi, I started hanging with queer friends. They're really nice and made me feel safe, as my familly is pretty homophobic and transophobic.

I've talked with them about things I never told anyone about my sexuality and identity. After making a joke, one trans friend teased me about being an egg. I laughed it off and though it was nothing.

But then I started overthinking. I've always had a female oc all my life. In any game, story, anything were you had to make a character I made a woman. Even in ttrpg and dnd campaigns with non queer friends. I've spent a lot of time lurking on trans subreddits because it felt right.

I've even envied female characters in different medias. I realised that I always wished I could have been born as a woman.

The problem is, that I don't think I'll ever manage to pass. To look myself in the mirror and see a real woman. To be accepted by my familly. To be accepted by my other friends. I feel like I'm just going to suffer more and more and never really manage to accomplish anything and just end up ruining my life.

So i'm here now, sitting on a bench outside at 2 am, writting a post on reddit, feeling like shit. Even if I've stoped thinking like my parents a long time ago, I still feel like an aberration, an error. I feel like I shouldn't have ever oppened this door and better stayed ignorant. I feel like I should just forget and go back to sleep and never remember any of that. I don't even know why I'm posting this.

Vent Misgendered behind my back

I feel kinda confused about this whole situation: I have friend, who’s also trans, he’s a very nice and understanding person, but yesterday I had a situation: I accidentally spotted a message on his phone while we hang out in a cafe, he messaged his friend and this message was about me, like “yes, I’m out for a walk with *my wrong pronouns*”. It kinda hurt me tbh because he never misgendered me personally ever and since he’s trans too he’s probably knows how important it is to use correct pronouns. I don’t even know what to do because obviously I shouldn’t have seen that message and don’t know how to talk with him about it but being misgendered behind my back disgusts me. I’ve been thinking like “oh, maybe he wrote like that because this person is transphobic?” but then thought why in the world he would be a friend of transphobic person? So, I don’t know how to trust him anymore to be honest. Don’t know if I’m overreacting but this situation really threw me off guard.

Discussion What exactly is TransMed?

Edited to make more readable.

(Possible TW I don't think this breaks any rules but it's a pretty sensitive topic.) I think there's a lot of confusion and mixed messages when it comes to what is transmed ideology and what is not floating around on the internet, so I guess I'm just coming here to ask. Different people seem to define it differently. Like I've seen some people say that the core idea of transmed is that the end goal for all transgender people should be a medical transition (like hormones, surgeries, whatever) to achieve your preferred gender. Obviously, I don't agree with that, as someone's own journey with their gender is entirely up to and personal to them. I feel like to say that you have to do a checklist for others, even in your own community, to respect you and view you as "really trans" is kind of silly and just feels needlessly exclusionary.

That again, I had an acquaintance call me "transmed" in the past in a derogatory fashion because I suggested to a friend that if his desire was to be stealth, he would need to give up some feminine things. Not that that would affect how I would view or refer to him in any way—obviously I respect his identity regardless of the clothing that he would wear—but if his goal is to pass as a binary cis man, and he already is not having the stature of or the hormones that a cis man would have, then wearing things like crop tops and skirts to the general public would not read like it would for a simply feminine cis man to do the samev. I want to make a point to say that this advice was not unsolicited we were both having a discussion about the topic, albeit in public and another friend of a friend chimed in. Again, I don't see anything wrong with anyone who wants to dress and be outside of the norm; all the power to you, and you still deserve respect and to have your identity validated. But this acquaintance suggested that simply for giving specific advice to a friend whose goal is to be binary, that I was somehow spreading a harmful rhetoric. I guess I just don't think I understand the perspective.

I am a trans man, and even though I might not pass well, my end goal is to pass. I want to take hormones and I want to have surgeries in order for that to happen. I don't think that anyone is lesser than me for having different goals, but I also don't think it's wrong or reductive to have those goals for myself. I also understand that maybe I only think this way because I'm young and I'm newer to my identity. I see that sort of discussion online a lot too, that people are more transmed in their younger years, but once they mature, they just don't care as much anymore. I don't know, obviously I don't want to be hateful or make anyone feel uncomfortable, but seriously don't think I said anything that was wrong.

Advice “Wish I was trans”

I have been heavily questioning my gender recently but still very uncertain. What’s strange is that I know what I want the answer to be. I want to be trans more than I think or feel I am. I wish I had more/any dysphoria and wish I had it much younger (I’m late 20s) so that it was more obvious and unavoidable. I find myself very jealous of woman and trans woman, thinking I wish I was them or had their life. I feel guilty though as I know dysphoria is awful and being trans and/or a woman is incredibly hard compared to being a cis man.

Vent I’m worried I’m faking being trans

I’m a trans dude, and I’m a minor. I wear a binder everytime I’m out of the house and even when I’m home a lot, my name is Sammi and I feel uncomfortable sometimes when people call me a she, but sometimes I don’t. Usually I really like they. I always feel uncomfortable being deadnamed.

I like to experiment with clothes a lot. I wear very girly clothes and bras, I like to wear feminine bathing suits, and I don’t mind my chest. I wouldn’t wear my binder if I could leave the house without one and still be gendered correctly.

I kind of actually love my breasts. I don’t want to get them surgically removed. I won’t go into detail, but I don’t hate my downstairs parts.

I’m really worried I’m faking. Does anyone else have any insight on this? Or am I just a girl going through a phase?

Questioning Trying to determine who I am and who I can be

Upvotes

Hello everyone, it’s nice to meet you! I am new to a lot of this, but I have experienced gender dysmorphia for a while now. I have only recently admitted to myself that this is the case and done more research into being transgender, which is why I am here!

Ever since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to be a girl. I’ve always liked the name lily. I have suppressed these feelings for a very long time. Recently I have had a lot more conversations with my girlfriend about being more honest, and I have also come to be more honest with myself. I’ve done a bit of research and I’ve been trying to join communities like this one to learn more.

I think I’m terrified about admitting that I might be trans. I’ve grown up in an area where that was shunned, where anyone who was different is bullied relentlessly. My family doesn’t support trans rights, and don’t support many of my political views. I don’t know what anyone would do if I ever came out. I’ve often fantasized about running away, transitioning in a new, more accepting place. A fresh start the way I want.

I’m still not 100% sure if I am trans. I guess I consider myself questioning at the moment, though deep down I think I know the answer… I’ve always felt unnatural in my body, and felt like I could do more of what I want, express myself how I want, if I had been born a girl.

I guess I’ve just been wondering, how do I know I’m trans? How do I know I’m not just going through a phase like my parents would probably say? Even if I did find out I was trans, I don’t know if anything would come of it. But I hope one day ill be able to accept myself either way.

Discussion Am I insane?

Hello people! I come to you today utterly perplexed (and a little wine drunk) This now makes it twice in one week where I have met cis people (one cishet and one gay man) who both openly told me (trans man) that they don't bother with pronouns anymore, the cishet only refers to people by name and the gay man exclusively uses they/them for everyone.

They both claim to be allies of the trans community.

To me this is the opposite of allyship as it seems like they're just giving up even attempting to use the correct persons pronouns, to me it seems lazy and kinda ignorant?

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills, if so that's fine it's definitely not the first time I've been wrong about something but if they are in the wrong I would love some talking points I could use as a rebuttal, have any of you had any similar experiences?

Please be kind, I am socially anxious

Edit 1: Just some clarification :3 - I have since cut off contact from the gay man for other alarming reasons - The cishet individual is my teacher, I attend a fairly left leaning University in a left leaning state - Everyone I have talked about in this post including me are white

Vent I was feeling great about transitioning, now I'm losing hope.

Everything felt like it was going great, but the wait-times to get any surgeries are insane.

When my right breast developed it had tubular growth, and it developed off to the side so I need surgery to fix it. At the same time I was going to get enhancement as well.

I got my referral with no problems, and expected there would be a wait time for the surgery.

But, I have to wait 1 year from the time of the referral just to get an appointment for a consultation.

Plus, to add insult to injury, they have a minimum body mass number you have to meet and I'm over. I can't even schedule an appointment, even after waiting a year.

Now I'm worried this will be the case for the other surgeries, orchiectomy, FFS, etc.

I'm 54 and yeas I feel like I'm losing time.

I tried to transition several times in the 90's, and again in 2007 but had to stop due to job and insurance loss.

Now I'm trying, but it seems like I'm not allowed.

Vent I get anxiety attacks because of dysphoria and i don't know what to do

Upvotes

TLDR: Vent about my life and why i get anxiety attacks,...

Possible trigger because i will talk about things that trigger my anxiety (maybe apart from the dysphoria)

First i must say that it doesn't happen often just once every 2 to 3 weeks but it's still bad, i know I'm not in such a bad situation as other people in a lot of ways so i don't know why i feel like this(technically i know but not completely), I'm 20 years old started hrt at 19 years old 7 months ago approximately, i have a family that luckily accepts me and loves me, and i know it doesn't sound that bad, people started hrt later and turned out fine, had worse situations and turned out fine, but i can't stop thinking how i hate myself and(in this part is a big vent about my life, sorry i need this) how i hate that because my dad used to hit me when i was little i developed social anxiety and a lot of distrust in everything, i knew i wanted to be a girl since i was like 9 or 10 but because of that distrust i thought that the simple act of doing a Google search would get me discovered and i would suffer from it and maybe get killed (i had a lot of trauma with my dad hitting me, and maybe i still have some) by my dad, my mom was and still is the greatest person i know in terms of love but because every thing i told to her(for some context they have been divorced since i was 3 so they lived in different houses that i changed every some amount of days) she would tell me to say to him so i didn't know what to do, so i mostly repressed it for some years, then i learned about trans people and at the time i thought some transphobic thoughts like "they just get surgeries that's not real" and "i don't want that, i want to be a real girl" because i didn't know about hrt, and forgot about it, most of the time i would spend my days on the internet in websites i thought wouldn't get me caught because i didn't know how the internet worked just downloading a lot of mtf transformation comics and wish that some day something like that happened to me, eventually it became a way to forget about it even if i cried almost 2-3 nights a week for approximately 5 years, then i realized trans women had the wanting to be girls in common but i still thought it was all surgeries and also fake, it wasn't until 9 months ago that i accepted the fact that i was trans and learned hrt existed because of some YouTube videos, and that's my vent about my life, sorry if it was long.

Now that I gave some context, i feel disgusted at myself for thinking that i could have transitioned younger if i had known i was going to be okay and feel like i wasted the good years being scared, and maybe if i did it at that time and came out the results would have been different and maybe it was because my family had become more mature with the passing of time, i don't know, but some time ago i read a Twitter post about a trans woman that was brave and became homeless and left her home young to transition (because her family didn't accept her) and she said that people that spent years repressing were at fault if their transition didn't go well, and probably this is what gives me the worst anxiety attacks, because right now I'm at a point where i can't se myself looking like a woman never, i have been "blessed" with naturally wide hips and i thought that would make me look better, but i also have been "cursed" with a big ribcage and wide shoulders, and my mom says my body is normal and it doesn't look badly but i feel like she's lying she also says the same about my insecurities with my face and with my weight, so mostly my anxiety is started with my dysphoria followed by remembering that tweet i mentioned and feeling an overwhelming shortness of breath because of that and crying because it could have maybe been avoided if i hadn't been so coward at the time (i feel like i can call what i had at the time that, cowardice)

And you may think "you already know what happens to you and why, why would you need to write about it to people on the internet?" And i don't know, it's not rational, first, i know 7 months is a short time on hrt but i hate waiting it's very difficult without faith in the process, second, i needed to vent so thanks if you read this, i don't think it's useful, but knowing someone cared about this post will at least make me feel better, third, i know i don't deserve it, but commenting something to help me deal with this even something to make me get my hopes up would help me a lot, so thanks in advance

Advice My trans friend is completely against me starting hrt

I told my friend (13 ftm) that I (16 mtf) want to try to start doing HRT, and he was completely against it. He said I need to wait until I'm an adult, because it's harmful if I don't, and that Google will just lie to me and say it's fine. I know he definitely can't start until 18 because of his parents, but I think my dad would be ok with it.

I'm not sure what to do. He's my best friend, but he also got frustrated and pissed off at me trying to explain why I think it's safe and hung up on me. I tried talking over text, and he pretty much cussed me out, saying that he doesn't care, even though he clearly does care, or he wouldn't be so angry. Idk, he's my best friend, and I don't want to ignore what he's saying (this isn't the first time he's expressed this), but I also want to talk to my therapist when that gets started and see what she thinks.
