Today marks 7 years since I began my transition and started hormones. I also turned 40 this year and this past year has been filled with so many memories. Many are happy, but not all.
From a transition standpoint, no new changes happened in the last year. My body feels like my body and I am working very hard to keep it working at the highest performance levels. The only remaining possible big changes that I see as a possibility in the future, with no definite timeline, would be voice training, and possibly Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS). Vocal training so I am no longer called “Sir” over the phone or so strangers and children do not do double takes when overhearing me speak. FFS, brow and tracheal shave, to further feminize my face. Vocal training takes time, and consistent effort, something I struggle with especially in my line of work. FFS runs the risk of nerve damage and loss of muscle control. Which is why both things have not happened yet.
Reflecting on the past year, the growth I have experienced has been more relationship focused. Learning to explore a new dynamic within ENM, new experiences, feelings, and impulses that come along the way, and learning to communicate better with those that I want in my life.
The past couple weeks I have been reminded how much I am loved by the people around me and I cannot express how wonderful that has made me feel. I look forward to this weekend of breakfast, broadway, and baking in the sun by the pool. I look forward to a future where my rights are not constantly eroded, where my peers don’t struggle for healthcare, employment, or acceptance by society. I look forward to the “big beautiful day” but know when it happens not much will have changed. I look forward to and will work towards the better future that we all deserve.
