Did your child experience febrile seizures?

Upvotes

My 2y just experienced her second seizure the other day almost a year after her first one. Both have been simple, full body seizures lasting just over 2 minutes, triggered by illnesses causing quick spikes in body temperature. I know this is something that can be fairly common, and I know the doctors tell me that it doesn’t make her more likely to develop epilepsy and that she’ll age out of it.

I of course am hopeful this is the case but, in your experience, is this true for your child? Did they suddenly hit a certain age and stop having seizures?

Dealing with mom anxiety when others are caring for your baby.

Upvotes

Am I being too controlling or unfair? I'm 30F, and my boyfriend is 55M. Our toddler is 15 months old. For the past six months, my boyfriend's 31F daughter has been living in our basement. She's currently unemployed, going through a breakup, and dealing with the loss of her pregnancy. Her relationship with her dad has been distant since she was 20; she'd only reach out for money. Now she lives with us, and he sends her money because she has nowhere else to go. She wants to spend time with her toddler sister, but I've set a strict limit of four hours outside the house. We live in the heart of Washington D.C., and I just get nervous when she's all over the city with my toddler. I don't know why I get so nervous when others watch my daughter. I can't shake this feeling of worry. My boyfriend says I'm controlling and evil for setting unrealistic time frames. He thinks I should let her go out whenever she wants. What do you think? How can I work on this fear of the unknown?

My son is to hard to handle

Upvotes

I really don't know what to say. Other than my son is so hard. I'm trying to figure it out. He is 4.5 years old and as of lately I'm pulling my hair out and questioning everything.

He is on a destructive streak. Takes his sister's things a ruins them. Messing up her puzzles, grabbing and throwing her toys she is playing with. If I ask him to do anything it's no and a hissy fit that becomes huge. Throwing anything in sight screaming and sometimes bites.

After he calms down I have him fix what he destroyed or if he throws his toy I take it for the rest of the day.

This morning he wanted jelly on his breakfast but I was finally able to make my food and told him when I'm done eating yes I can do that. He got upset and threw his breakfast on the ground. I allowed the dog to eat it and when he was calm we cleaned it up together and he had buttered toast. I really don't know what else to-do in those moments because he doesn't want help to calm down and it makes it worse.

He then a few minutes later took apart his sister's finished puzzle.

If I tell him to do anything it's 5 reasons why he can't do it or he says let me do this and this and this then I'll do it. When I say no and grab him to guide him to do it. His brain glitches out and he can't function and makes weird noises and facial features and hand gestures. Like his brain short circuits.

He is starting PreK with an IEP and Speech therapy. But I'm drained. I'm sad. I feel like I'm ruining him because my methods don't seem to work.

Divorce at 32 weeks?

Upvotes

I have been married to my husband for 2 months. We only got married because I was pregnant. Lately I am seriously considering divorce.

I knew he wasn’t the cleanest but we moved in together anyway due to the baby. He doesn’t clean or do any chores unless prompted. Prompting him to do chores makes him resentful and sulk. Sometimes he doesn’t talk to me for days and other times he tells me that I’m being “awful” and demanding and that he’s not my servant (and other cruel words).

He naps for several hours every day while I cook and clean and if I suggest a shorter nap or ask for help, I usually get in trouble (silent treatment, etc).

I’m considering staying just so that I don’t have to move while 8-9 months pregnant and so that I can have two sources of income while I lose 50% of mine on maternity leave. I accidentally brought up the idea of divorce last night and I am now getting the silent treatment and refusal to help with anything around the house. Should I follow through on my plans now or wait until after the birth?

Chickfila?

Upvotes

Hi, I am 25 years old and a mom to a 19 month old. I’m currently a sahm, but really want to get out there and start working. Not looking for a career right now, just something to get me started. I was wondering if any of you moms have worked at chickfila but specifically when your partner or husband gets home from work? I want to work but we don’t want to do daycare because of cost. I would be able to work 5-11pm if I were to be hired. The one closest to me closes at 12am so I guess 5-12 is when I’d be available week days and then obviously open availability on Saturday. Just wondering if anyone has done this before and how did it go? TYIA

No Cardio follow-ups for 3 years!

We finally made it to the other side of my childs heart journey. From two appointments a week for the first 6 months, to every 6 months, to yearly, to the months spent preparing for their repair surgery and recovery after, we just got the news that we’ve graduated from yearly visits to every 3-5 years.

Its been a long 5 years, but they made it through like an absolute champ 🩷

Pros and Cons of siblings sharing a room?

I have a 4.5 year old and a 10 month old baby. My 4 year old has been asking me for months if he can share a room with his baby brother. I've told him that the baby goes to bed earlier then he does, and wakes up before him. I'm worried that they may wake each other up. I didn't share a room with my siblings growing up, so I have no experience with it. What are your pros/cons?

ETA: He wants to share a room because he sleeps much better (and I think feels safer) when someone is in the same room with him, like in a hotel. He's been having bad dreams lately.

Why are people downgvoting this??

How are we bringing in extra money?

*I need to start with this was not planned. I have been struggling more than normal this past year, and found myself missing a few pills every month. Well, one month I missed 4 in a row. Now, here I am. 22 years old, 23 weeks pregnant, on the verge of divorce, and planning to move to another state.

My husband has just moved to my hometown so my mom could find him a job, but is only going to be bringing home $2720 a month. We are very appreciative of the work, and he feels like it's great money, but rent in the area is $1500 easily for very little, and most places still require 3x income.

My father and I have been doing remodeling jobs on our own to save up to move. That is my 9-5, 5 days a week. But we are at the point where I don't really get to pay myself, I'm just going to have him cover my portion of the move in replacement. I got a job at Dollar General to try to fill the gaps, but I might make $100 a week there.

I have found my ability to work quickly declining. I have come to terms with the fact that I most likely will not be returning to work when I move, which will be in about a month and a half, around 30 weeks. Between physical limitations and the chance of a job taking me on when I look that big, I just don't think it will be possible. I need advice on how to bring in more money, quickly, before I move. I have maybe $1500 saved myself, and I already work 50 hours a week average. Leaving my dad is not an option. Without me to help complete jobs, we would lose the bulk of our savings to move. So I cant just get another full time job. And I have desperately searched for a better part time job that can give me atleast 4 days a week, and nobody will take me. I have good work experience, I have called, I have shown up to the place, I can't get a different job. So my $100 a week Dollar General job is all that I got. What are doing to bring home money? I tried DoorDashing, but with all the work I do, getting in and out of the car is just not reasonable.

My 3-month-old suddenly has 10-minute screaming episodes while we’re out. Has anyone experienced this?

My 3-month-old has suddenly started having intense screaming episodes over the last two days, and I’m trying to figure out if anyone has experienced something similar.

Yesterday, we were visiting another house when she suddenly started screaming at the top of her lungs for about 10 minutes. Today, it happened again while we were in the car after leaving the mall.

She’ll be awake and acting completely normal, then suddenly start screaming. Feeding, carrying, rocking, and changing her diaper don’t help. After about 10 minutes, she falls asleep, and when she wakes up she’s completely back to normal.

She’s exclusively breastfed, has plenty of wet diapers, no fever, no cough, and no vomiting.

Has anyone had a baby this age do this? Could it be overstimulation, being overtired, motion sickness, or something else? Did you end up finding a cause?

To move family across country with young kids, or stay in high COL where we have large family network.

Family with 11 year old and 2 under 2 is trying to decide on best course of action for staying in home town or moving across the country for better opportunities.
We just made the move back to CA from a state with a lower cost of living because I have a large family here who is a great community and offers a lot of support. Also you just can’t beat the opportunity to explore nature and enjoy being outside here. We have waited for almost 10 years to move back because the cost of living is so high in CA.
After about 6 months of living here, we are torn between trying to stay and make it work, or move to another state. One that we have lived and bought a house before and know we also love the area and amenities there.
I am a stay at home mom, so childcare isn’t an issue. Although it is nice knowing if we want to do a date night their grandparents will watch them, I don’t have to worry about finding a trustworthy and reliable baby sitter.
The city I grew up in has changed a lot and isn’t as safe. We are currently renting while house searching. To buy a house here it is double the price as the state we are considering, the houses are also way less updated and more run down for our budget. Along with everything else being more expensive- groceries, insurance, etc.
My husband works remotely so finding a job isn’t an issue.
However, we are also looking to start a small business. The opportunities and cost of startup is much higher in CA. Where we want to move has more potential and lower costs overall. It seems almost impossible to even get started here in CA. We have way less to put towards savings, business start up costs, vacation and activities for our kids here. Our financial situation is so much worse here, we are almost living paycheck to paycheck at this point.
I am so torn because we have such an incredible relationship with my family. Our three kids are loved so much here.
We have lived with no family support for around 10 years total, and have of course missed our family, but also found happiness where we were.
I’m looking for personal experience in a similar situation or even any insight.
I know it’s a decision that ultimately only my own family can make. But sometimes it’s helpful to have outside input to help with making a choice.

Can we please be more supportive here?

Honestly I have spent more time on other parenting subs… but recently I’ve noticed more posts on r/Mommit where the judgy comments, and down-voting for parents working hard to do right by their kiddos, is callous at best (and often seems quite mean-spirited). This hurts my mama heart, both in the utter lack of support for fellow mamas having a rough time, and because we lead by example, and what does this unkindness say about how we’re raising our kids? Can we please do better, and skip a beat before reacting with negativity and judgment?

Lower back pain post-partum

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has any tips. I don't remember it being this bad last time but I'm 2 weeks post-partum and have terrible lower back pain. Mostly it's in the top of my glutes, I can't bend, I get a jarring pain with each step when I walk, worse going downstairs.

I'm assuming it's from sitting around nursing and general weak core post pregnancy.

I'm trying to stretch when I can and do some gentle core exercises. Does anyone have anything they know that might help?

Crying because I don't understand my baby

I'm currently crying while my husband tries to put our 12 week old baby to sleep after I tried and couldn't take the crying anymore.

I feel like I don't understand him at all I don't get when he is tired, when I should be getting him ready to sleep, when he's overtired, etc.

I was trying to follow his wake windows, but when it got closer to 1.5h awake and I tried to put him to sleep he cried a lot. So I thought oh that's too much, I waited too long. But now, if I try to get him ready around an hour after he wakes up, the same thing happens.

This specific case, he had been awake for an hour and ten minutes, his eyebrows were red and he was getting fussy. I thought this must be the time. He has become very difficult to put to sleep anywhere other than the carrier. I strap him in and he starts screaming his head off. I feel like if I shush or speak to him, it makes him cry worse. At this point, he is red and sweating from the crying but will not calm down, no matter if I am trying to hold him, speak to him, walk with him. It's been about 15-20 mins by now. I managed to calm him temporarily while sitting on a yoga ball, but then he started screaming his head off again and I just couldn't anymore. I'd been trying to hold it together and not cry, but at that point I just couldn't anymore. I unstrapped him, placed him in his bassinet and walked away crying my eyes out.

My husband took over and managed now to put him to sleep within 10 minutes and minimal crying this time.

I just feel like a failure, like I can't do anything right. He is breastfed, I'm always home with him and I can't even calm him down and put him to sleep. I have no family close, and I missed out when my friends and family had children as I've lived abroad for the past 10 years.

My husband was off today, but he will be at work tomorrow and Friday, and I'm already starting to dread having to be home alone. I was going out every day with the baby, trying to meet people, but now I feel anxious about leaving the house in case a) he starts screaming before falling asleep or b) start screaming after waking up, which he also does.

I'm at my wits end, please give me some advice, I don't want to feel like this anymore. I love my baby, I just wish I understood him better.

Gifts for friend that’s pregnant and having constant nausea

My friend is pregnant and has had very back sickness and nausea, she’s tried a few different tablets from the doctor and none seem to have helped so far, doctor thinks she has hyperemesis gravidarum.
I’m hoping to go and visit her and I know I’m limited to help with her sickness but wanted to take a gift box to help her. Include things like electrolyte drinks, face masks, some carb snacks as that’s mostly what she can manage atm. For those mums that maybe went through something similar is there anything you can suggest that helped you that would be good to include?

Anyone else's kid struggling with reading more than you expected at this age?

My neighbor's child was reading something off my phone the other day. The text is not complicated, any child should be able to read it. But he was mouthing a lot of the words and still couldn't really tell me what it meant after. He's 12.

It got me thinking because I've noticed it with a few kids his age - a few of my son's classmates included

Is this something other parents are dealing with? What does it actually look like in your house?

toddler has a high fever and I have a three week old. I’m an anxious mess - has anyone else dealt with this?

newborn and toddler with a fever. Has anyone else dealt with it? I feel like I’m at my breaking point.

I have a fresh three week old at home. We have been isolating to the max pretty much staying home except one wellness visit at the pediatrician. My two year old woke up with a high fever after nap yesterday and I’m devastated. This is the last thing I need. I developed a uti after birth, then antibiotic resistant mastitis, now this…. I just don’t want my newborn to get sick. We did everything right and my worst nightmare still happened. I’m just looking for other families that have dealt with this? We’re in a three story townhome and toddler is in the living room sleeping in a pack and play with dad and I’m upstairs with the newborn. We did this almost immediately after the fever but I’m afraid the damage is done. Newborn is eating ok and feels nice and cool for now, but I know all illnesses have an incubation period.

Traumatic Vaginal vs C-Section

I'm looking for some insight from those who had a traumatic vaginal delivery and then went on to have a c-section or vice versa.

With my first child, I had an extremely long and traumatic birth leading to severe internal and external injuries. I had ripped stitches postpartum landing me back in the hospital a few days after getting home and was so injured that I could not comfortably walk around for about 4 weeks and could not sit down for closer to 8. I had to wear a diaper and did not have control of my bladder for an extended period of time. It really negatively impacted my PP experience and breastfeeding my child and I think the injuries correlated with my PTSD and severe PP mental illness as well.

Since my first birth I've gotten new providers who say they believe my first was "sunny side up" and were able to hypothesize a few other things that weren't ideal and they said that there should have been things done to make the process easier on baby and myself. So I'm hopeful that I have a better team if I were to try vaginal again. For my second, I am open to letting my body go into labor naturally and seeing if I have a better experience initially, but I'm leaning towards a c-section.

My best friend has had 2 c-sections and was going to the market to grocery shop the day after discharge. She has nothing to compare it to since she never had a vaginal birth but swears they're not bad to recover from [for her]. I've had abdominal surgeries before so have an idea of what that recovery is like and the pain associated with the incision/muscles albeit I wasn't also raising children/keeping them alive while recovering for those.

Anyway, I'm hoping for other Mom's experiences with a similarly traumatic vaginal experience and if c-section was the better choice for their body and mind if given the option.

Out of touch mom thinks she's Grandma of the year; hasn't held my newborn in 11 weeks

She sends viral baby tips instead of asking about the baby.

She hasn't come to see my daughter since May, hasn't asked a single genuine question about how she's developing, and doesn't know her routine at all.

Instead, she seems me out-of-touch Facebook reels about babies (that she certainly thinks are helpful), but most of which don't even apply to my baby or our situation.

For example, this morning she sent a video with the caption, "Accidentally slept 6 hours straight last night. Now they’re acting all crazy like I’m going to do it again." ...celebrating a baby sleeping 6 hours like it’s a miracle. Meanwhile, my baby has been sleeping 10-11 hours straight every single night for probably 2 months. She has no clue because she doesn't care to ask.

She lives less than 10 minutes away and has held her 3 times since she was born in April. The last time was May 4th. She was here to visit on May 24th, but had to rush out the door after 5 minutes because hey new husband (a rant for another day) called to say he cut his finger with a power saw.

My dad is here once a week or so, even if it's brief (they live a few doors down from one another) and this weekend she sent him with a bag of things to give us, which included a onesie that reads, *"I'm not SPOILED, my Grandma just* ***loves*** *me!"*

It pissed me off so much...and I put it straight into my donation bag with the things she's outgrown already. Like hell I'm going to put that on my daughter, who is going on 4 months old and her grandma who "spoils" her hasn't held her since she was 3 1/2 weeks!

She tried to visit on June 18th, by texting me, "coming up soon, waiting on Daddy!" and 2 minutes later, "on our way" - meanwhile I was frantically texting her back that it wasn't a good time, could we plan something, even later that evening? Or Saturday? She got out of the car, said that that night she had guests coming in and she had an event on Saturday. "We'll choose another time," she said. Then silence for a week until she sent more baby reels.

Practically the same scenario happened 2 weeks ago, except her response to my wanting to plan a little was, "is it okay to come see you guys at 1:30 PM on Friday?" - when I again suggested in the evening or on Sunday, same thing: guests checking in Friday, going to symphony fundraiser Sunday. "We will have to figure out another time," she says. I replied, "Okay, no problem. Let us know when you want to try for another time." She's texted me since about diarrhea lettuce, wildfire smoke, and of course, baby tips, but no scheduling a visit.

She can find time to be a church elder and an innkeeper and a historical society board member and a borough councilwoman and fly 3 states away to visit her new husband's family...but here I am right up the hill and I get the leftover, minimal effort scraps.

Urethra pain, three weeks postpartum, but no catheter.

I tried searching this all over Reddit, but it would always come back as someone had a catheter during birth. I did not have a catheter at birth 3 weeks ago yet I still feel so much pain in my urethra area. I also feel like there is a grape sensation in my vagina. I don’t believe it’s poking out but I haven’t looked. I feel like I have a but I’m on four or five of an antibiotic and it’s still not feeling better. They never did a culture on me. I’m slowly spiraling, I’m just so tired of being in pain. Did anyone else have urethra pain without a catheter?

How should I handle 8/9mo tantrums

My baby is turning 9 months old in a couple of days. She’s been getting mad when we take things from her or sit her down when she doesn’t want to be for a while, but the last few weeks she’s throwing full blown tantrums. Throwing herself back, crying till her face is red, screaming. Tantrums.

I have just been trying to catch her so she doesn’t hurt her head when she flings her self to the ground. I offer her comfort when she reaches for me, or I’ll rub her back or belly while she’s on the ground crying. Then when she calms I’ll offer her something safe to play with. Never the thing I took away. I don’t want to reward her behavior, I just want to redirect.

I do the whole explaining why I took whatever from her or why I had to sit her down, which feels silly right now when she doesn’t understand what I’m saying, but I know I should get in the habit for when she does understand.

I just wondered if there’s anything else I can do to help her regulate. I try to stay calm when she does it, but sometimes I have to just take a moment. Turn around or walk away for a second, because some days it’s constant.

Any advice?
