planning my one month trip though Europe

Hello everyone, I want to interrail though Europe next summer (mis-june to mid-july approx.)

I want to go to places with history and culture but also places where I can relax by the sea with beautiful landscapes and hikes.

I'm departing from Lyon and we were thinking of doing the following itinerary:

  1. Lyon → Barcelona
  2. Barcelona → Marseille
  3. Marseille → Milan
  4. Milan → Bolzano
  5. Bolzano → Venice
  6. Venice → Ljubljana
  7. Zagreb → Split

the Ljubljana → Zagreb train will be bought separately

Here are my questions:

1 - Apart from the selected cities, what other cities are worth visiting given the itinerary?

2 - Would you recommend visiting different countries other than the ones we plan on visiting?

3 - Taking into account train/ ferry trip duration, is our route ideal, especially around the northern countries?

Thank you for your help!

Interrail is not good in Spain. Is it better in Portugal?

I am in Western Andalusia. I was planning to cross to France.

Trains to Madrid via Seville are difficult to reserve.

I was thinking, maybe I could go through Portugal, a pit stop in Lisbon, Galicia and cross through the north?

Is it a better idea? Or am I going to be stuck with the same reservation situation than in Spain?

Itineraries Help with Gdansk to Berlin train route using Interrail Pass

When we originally planned our journey, I swear there was a direct train between Gdansk, Poland and Berlin, Germany. But now it seems we’re looking at a really long travel day with a lot of connections and/or what seems to be a replacement bus which I’m not sure how this works with the pass?

We have a first class pass and want to limit our travel day to Thursday 23rd July only. We have a rolling suitcase and a duffel bag each so ideally the less connections the better, I’m also not sure what the luggage situation is like on regional trains in Germany so if you have advice I’m keen to hear it!

Other Query on the passes offered

I appreciate this question probably gets asked loads but I’m currently without consistent signal in the arse end of Rural Norfolk, so apologies!

A very quick but I just wanted to check whether there is a pass that interrail offers that is only tile capped and does not proscribe a route or specific destinations. I’ve just got free of a shit workplace and really need to go be normal. My only confirmed destination that I would need to get to currently would be to end in Tallinn, and as a UK resident I’m thinking of starting West and working my way East.

Is this something that interrail offers? Cheers!

Traveling Iryo with eurail pass

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased an eurail 1st class 6 day pass because I will be traveling around Spain for a couple weeks. I am trying to book an Infintina Bistro seat reservation, but this is not an option on eurail. It only offers the basic second and first class. And when I go onto Iryo's website directly, there is no place for me to purchase an Infintina Bistro seat reservation. It only displays the full ticket price. Is there really no way to do this?

Pass cover number

Hey! I’m trying to make a seat reservation on Leo express, but when they ask for a pass number they ask for a 9 character number when mobile passes only have 6 characters. I looked it up and the interrail website has a pass cover number generator for people with a mobile pass. My question is wont that possibly be a problem if the conductor checks our passes? That 9 character number is nowhere on our pass and I’m worried they might think it’s fake due to the numbers not matching up.

Travel day My friend accidentally used two travel days in one day/for a single trip. Can he get that travel day back somehow?

We travelled from Milano to Montpellier and we saved two different journeys to our trip. After we decided for one journey, we deleted the other one, but he still activated both of them for the pass and used two travel days. Can he get that one travel day back somehow.

Leo Express to prolong Frankfurt - Bohumín connection to Przemyśl

Leo express will expand their service to Przemyśl from 31 July, for now Wednesday to Sunday only. Details on their website: https://www.leoexpress.com/en/where-we-go/popular-routes/przemysl-prague-dresden-frankfurt-cheap-tickets

This train is very interesting for Interrailers as the compulsory reservations are free, even the couchettes. Select 2nd class pass in their shop to book them, by selecting 1st class, you will only be able to book business class seats.

Czech Rail Changed the Train Number and Timetable - Seat Reservation Still Valid?

I got this email (see below) but I can't tell if my original seat reservation still stands. I see my reservations in my purchase history, but no info if they're still active. Train number changed from RJ383 to RJ13463 and now ends at Hamburg-Altona instead of Hamburg.

Does anyone know the best way to handle this?

》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》》

Dear Customer,

we would like to inform you that there has been a change to your ticket Koebenhavn H - Hamburg Hbf on 20.8.2026.

The timetable on the route of the connection has been changed. For more information, please search for the connection again.

Search connection

You can exceptionally use your ticket on other trains to you destination within its validity period, even on a different route. However, you must use the same carriers for which the ticket was purchased (e.g. ČD, DB ÖBB, PKP, ZSSK).

Present this email to the conductor on the train. For trains with mandatory seat reservations (marked in the timetable with the letter R in a box), it is necessary to secure a seat reservation. Passengers can request reimbursement of the costs of a newly paid seat reservation from the issuing company (e.g. ČD).

Information for train staff

The passengers presenting this Confirmation have been informed by ČD that their journey is subject to timetable changes/train cancellation/missed connection.

Which means that they cannot use the connection for which they purchased a ticket.

Therefore, they may use any other train in the direction of this destination even via another route, on the same day. The passengers have been informed that they must use the same carriers (e.g. ČD, DB, ÖBB, PKP, ZSSK) stated on their ticket(s). For trains with obligatory reservation (marked with an „R“ in the timetable) a new seat reservation is compulsory. The passengers may claim reimbursement of costs their issuing undertaking (e.g. ČD).

Ticket exchange or refund

We apologize for the changes and wish you a pleasant journey.

Itineraries Need some help finding places to visit

Hiya. I've got a 4-day travel pass that I'm looking to use but I'm not too sure where to go next.

Places I've been to already include Strasbourg, Bern, Zermatt, Brienz (for the BLS lake cruise), Kandersteg, Innsbruck, Vienna, Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Paris.

I particularly loved hiking around Oeschinensee and going up the Gornergrat. Are there any similar destinations with great scenary and hikes that are reachable with my travel pass from London? I wouldn't mind switching it up a little and going to some coastal destinations too during the summer.

Ideally I'd like to go to some places that aren't as tourist-heavy and feel safe (as a solo traveller, I felt really unsafe in Paris...).

Thank you!

Nighttrain Budapest-Koper

Hello

I’m taking the D train ‘Istria’ from Budapest to Koper in early August. Do any of you have any experience with this train how punctual is it? Even at night. A colleague of mine has to get off the train in Celje. And what’s the capacity like? I’d actually like to book a single sleeper. Do I need to book as soon as possible, or is a few days beforehand enough? Is the train comparable to the new-generation NJ trains? In terms of comfort, that is.

Thanks for your replies

Website not allowing reservations

Hi- does anyone on the eurail site have experience with it just not loading the ability to reserve tickets? I’m in Italy and the high speed trains here require reserved seats so I’m not super sure what to do. I’ve seen online that it seems to happen to other people too but all the solutions they list aren’t working.

Looking for advice Moving from Sweden to Germany with two big suitcases—recent Snälltåget experiences?

Hi everyone!

I'm relocating from Sweden to Germany (final destination Trier) and planning to take Snälltåget from Stockholm to Hamburg, then continue with DB. I haven't traveled on the Snälltåget ever. I'll be traveling with two large suitcases (15 kg each) plus a backpack, since I'm moving, not just visiting.

For anyone who has taken Snälltåget recently, I'd really appreciate your experience:

  1. Is there any restriction regarding luggage number/weight?

  2. How is the luggage space on board in practice? Are the racks big enough for two full-size suitcases?

  3. Does it get crowded on busy departures—did people struggle to find space for large bags?

  4. Any tips for the Hamburg connection with heavy bags?

Thanks in advance!

Seat reservations Replacement train reservation question

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello, I was planning on travelling Hamburg-Kolding today via regional trains as I have no reservation. However, the 14:34 ECE train (that require seat reservation) was cancelled and a replacement leaving the same time came instead. In the DB app there was no info about the replacement requiring a seat reservation, is this true?

I have now gotten on the train, and if allowed will stay on until Kolding. Otherwise I will have to swap to a few local trains/busses from Schleswig to Kolding.

Night trains Need help booking Budapest → Split night train with Interrail

I’m trying to book the direct night train from Budapest to Split on 25th July 2026 with my Interrail Pass.
Interrail won’t let me book the reservation online (only paper ticket), so I tried MÁV. I selected “I only need seat reservation”, added my Interrail Pass, and selected a sleeper compartment.
However, even when choosing a 2-bed or 4-bed sleeping car, it only shows a €4 offer with a seat icon, not a bed/sleeper reservation.
Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong? How do I actually book the sleeper reservation?
