Me (43M) and my wife (41F) have been in couples therapy for the past 3 years, married for 15. We have three kids, 12, 9 and 6. We entered therapy at my wife's request due to anger issues that I had due to our differences in parenting approaches. I learned a lot and grew a lot as a parent and have felt like things had taken a definite turn for the better, a turn which immediate family members noticed and commented on.
In our therapy session today, my wife said that she was done with the marriage and hasn't been happy in the past 6-9 months. She has struggled with depression and ADHD in the past (as have I) and underwent a bunch of medication changes in 2025. Ever since then she's been unhappier and unhappier. All of the romance has been long dead, we ignored the advice of our various counselors to make time for each other, go on date nights, take trips together without the kids, etc. That was dumb. Should have just gotten a sitter...
My wife has been a stay-at-home mom for the past 12 years ever since the birth of our oldest. She has a bachelors and has worked odd jobs occasionally. She is pretty loose and fast with money, loves to buy stuff on Amazon, go on trips with her best friend, etc. I, and family members on both sides, are concerned about her ability to care for the kids solo. Not that she is a bad mother by any stretch, just that between her depression, her low earning potential without going back to school, and her ADHD, she will become overwhelmed very quickly.
I believe that there is still the ability to work our way back to <something> in this marriage, maybe. We changed therapists about a year ago because we both felt that the original therapist was out of ideas for us. I wonder if a new therapist focused on EFT could help make some kind of breakthrough. She said about a week ago that she "didn't see the point of more therapy, we've been going for years and it hasn't worked."
I know from reading this sub that the whole "stay together for the kids" concept is pretty well rejected, but to be 100% clear, this is not a marriage in which there were any true fights. We have disagreed and one or both of us have walked away rather than escalate. No screaming, no sobbing in front of the kids, nothing like that. It's pretty much all happened behind closed doors and after the kids have gone to bed. I really want to make this work, both for my kids and for my wife, who I still care about!
Assuming that the divorce moves forward, my intent is to buy her out of our house using a family loan/gift/early inheritance so that the kids can stay in the same (very good) school district. She doesn't know this yet and just put together a transition plan focused on mediators, selling the house, etc. On the advice of my mother, I am going to get the best lawyer I can to advise me at least on what should be in a mediated agreement and be "on standby" if the mediation fails.
To the extent that I have any specific questions, I suppose they would be:
- Should I push harder for continued counseling? Maybe refuse to agree to a divorce without trying this?
- Should I put together a list of reasons why I believe a divorce is a bad choice, not just for the kids but for our joint financial security?
- Is buying her out of the house to provide stability for the kids a good idea?
- This one is specific for those who have gone down this path: how did you manage when one parent moved out of said district? Did you split custody such that your kids were with you M-F exclusively? Did it fall to the other parent to get them to school if they lived, say, one town over?
Any advice, thoughts, etc. would be welcome.
