DC ISO Apartment Complex, Neighborhood Recommendations, + General Search Tips
Hi everyone! I’m a recent college grad moving to D.C. in August for work and was hoping to get some advice for my apartment search. I’ll have a couple of weeks of temporary housing when I arrive to tour places, but I’d love to hit the ground running with a good list of neighborhoods and apartment complexes to check out (or avoid) -- Thanks in advance!
General Overview:
- Budget: Ideally around or under $3,000 a month. with a hard max at $3,500.
- Layout: 1 bedroom, or ideally 1 bedroom + a den
- No roommates
Location:
I will be working in Northwest DC (near Georgetown). My ideal commute would be walkable on nicer days, but I will also have a car so I'm fine driving if it opens up better options. So far I've mainly been searching in the Georgetown and Foggy Bottom/ West End areas but I am open to exploring others. Obviously Arlington is right across the bridge there as well, but I think I would prefer to stay in D.C.
Preferred Amenities:
- In unit washer/dryer (strongly preferred, but shared facilities in the building isn't the end of the world.)
- Natural light/windows, ideally in both the living space and sleeping space.
- I have a car so parking would be a plus, but I’m coming from a city where I street parked, so it’s not a dealbreaker.
- Good access to parks or running trails. (The Rock Creek and Potomac trails look really nice)
One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of newer “luxury” buildings seem to have amenities like pools, rooftop lounges, or large fitness centers. Since I’ll have access to a gym through work and probably wouldn’t use most of those other amenities, I’d rather put that money toward a larger or nicer apartment, or just spend less.
I’m also curious about utilities. I’ve noticed DC apartments vary quite a bit in what is included in the rent. In my previous city, pretty much every apartment just had tenants pay electricity and internet, but here I’m seeing different combinations of electric, water, sewer, trash, gas, etc.
For those familiar with the area, what are reasonable monthly estimates for utilities (electric, gas, water/sewer, and trash) for a one-bedroom apartment? I’d like to factor those into comparing listings.
