Question How do you REALLY diagnose celiacs?

When I first saw a gi doctor for myserious gi issues she ordered a stool test and blood test that included a celaic test. Both came back negative. When i got my colonoscopy and upper endoscopy I pushed for a celiac biopsy just to be sure because the mystery gi symptoms werent letting up. Then I heard from people i follow with celiacs that you can have a negative biopsy and still have celiac, BUT she said it usually happens that way if your blood test says yes but the biopsy says no. Ive recently been diagnosed with gastroparesis but for the past couple weeks ive had terrible worsening of symptoms so I'm leaving no stone unturned. I mean, if I have a 3 for 3 negative tests, it cant still be celiac, right? I didnt go gluten free before any tests but ive been hearing about biopsies being faulty, even for stuff like crohns related inflammation, because its not like 100% of your gi tract is showing visible signs 100% of the time. But a 3 for 3, I should be in the clear, right?

Question Is it ever okay to eat gluten? Recently diagnosed (late 20s) and really struggling to accept what my life will be like soon

Hi all. I was recently diagnosed with celiac after my blood test and genetic results, I’m now currently a few weeks from my endoscopy and really grieving the fact that I can’t have gluten again after it. I practically eat gluten every meal, and am really grieving how my life will be changing soon. I’ve had gluten free alternatives before (my dad and other relatives are celiac), and it has never tasted good to me. What I’m really grieving is how this will affect my social life after this. I love going out to eat. I love going to breweries with friends and having a good beer. I really am struggling to grasp being 100% gluten free. I’m struggling to accept that many restaurants will not be safe for me. And that my life after this is constant vigilance for what I can consume. I’m crying just typing this up again. I know for my health I need to stay consistent but is it okay if I have it occasionally?😭 mild stomach symptoms would make it worth it to me for the occasional food I miss or the social aspect.

For those who have active social lives, how do you deal? I love going out to food and drinks with friends. I love trying new foods and new places. I’m in denial of what my future is to look like soon😭😭 it all feels so unfair

Discussion Can someone be real with me and tell me how bad it actually is to have a bite here and there?? (I’m asymptomatic for the most part so I can never really tell)

I was talking to chat gbt and he was saying things like even a small crumb can wipe out all the good I’ve done and that’s why cross contamination is so bad because no matter how much you have, your body will attack your intestines if you ingest it. And saying things like having this disease makes me more likely to get another auto immune disease especially if it keeps going untreated or I keep breaking the “diet” and having small bites here and there so then I got worried about getting another disease. And then I was worried that my intestines are never gonna actually heal because I toast my bread in the same toaster that my bf uses so I probably get a crumb here and there. And I sometimes tell restaurants that the same fryer is ok because how bad can it actually be. But I’ve been feeling shitty the last few weeks and I’m worried that my iron is low again and that I’ll never really be able to relax if I’m constantly worried about cross contamination or somebody telling me it’s gluten free when really it’s not etc.

So can I hear some other peoples experiences with how they’ve handled this and their disease ?

Question Glutaned Investigation

I clearly got gluten last night but I am going through everything that entered my mouth and I can't think of where it came from.

  1. I ate fish and chips from a fully gluten free restaurant and a hop water.

  2. Some cheddar smart pop that is labeled gluten-free and does not share equipment

  3. Reach ultra reach mint Floss

  4. Prior to dinner I did my nails on our old dining table that has deep grains. But it seems so far fetched I could have glued gluten on my fingers and then ingested it when I ate fries later.

I would love to hear opinions on "who dunnit" or a source I'm not considering.

Rant tTG- IGA somehow worse that it was 3 years ago 😩

Diagnosed positive with a tTG-IGA of 23 in 2023. Now it's 35! Feels like what's the point of this headache of being strict gluten free, but I know it'd probably be much worse if I didn't. Going to talk with my gastro next week. In the mean time, guess I'll just anxiously wait and continue eating my cardboard bread...

Product Help me feel I can eat this! Jersey Mikes - is this the GF bread?

I’m having the most frustrating experience. I’m stuck at a car dealership for the day and ordered this sandwich from JM on door dash. I called when I ordered and confirmed they saw the GF tag. My bag has GF on the receipt from my order but it’s not written on the bag. I called to confirm I got GF and they are busy and have made a bunch of GF and can’t confirm one was mine. They looked up my ticket and confirmed it said GF which I know. Does this look like their GF???

Question Egg Donating and Celiac

Has anyone with celiac successfully been an egg donor? It's something I've always wanted to do. No one in my family, extended and close has celiac disease so my diagnosis was a shock.

I applied to a local egg bank and everything was looking promising, and then they randomly emailed that they won't be moving forward and didn't say why. I assume it's my celiac? I emailed back asking for clarification and hopefully I get some. I read that many clnics will accept it if your condition is well managed. I also understand it's genetic and they'd have to sort out eggs that carried the risk. I was just hopeful and felt I had a lot of good, and genetically rare traits to bring to the table.

it just feels like another thing celiac takes away from you.

Don't you just love going to the grocery store and seeing portions be the same size but prices being higher? Cause I know I also love seeing prices being the same but the portions being smaller. Gluten free Oreos being the same price as their normal counterparts except the package is noticeably smaller? So amazing!

Question A safety checker?

If you could point your phone at any food and instantly know whether it was safe for your diet, what would you want it to check first?

Question I'm having a barbecue wedding party this weekend and have some celiac family members. The meal is a "build your own kebab" bar. How do I know if a meat, seasoning, etc is celiac safe and not just gluten free (I know GF doesn't always mean celiac safe)

Rant Newbie Celiac

I was recently diagnosed with celiac after bloodwork and biopsy. I work for a large healthcare company that has a cafeteria. I met with one of the dietitians who is celiac herself for a tour of what I could have at the cafe. The line servers switch gloves and pull out the dedicated cutting board, etc. So far so good. I felt like a turkey sandwich. They pulled a loaf of Udis out to get my slices. Put it together, sliced, and wrapped. I walked back to my office, opened it up, and groaned. Picked off all the bead and ate it with a knife and fork. It was tasty, but no more bread there for me. My dad became celiac late in life too and loved Udi, but he toasted it. They don’t have a dedicated GF toaster. I could bring my own bread, I guess. Any recs for decent GF bread or rolls that don’t require toasting?

Question Stomach pain returning randomly?

Hi all,

I’m new to the celiac gang. Haven’t spoken to my naturopath yet but my ttg-iga test was off the charts.

I stopped eating gluten about 1.5 weeks ago since I found out and iv been really careful to replace everything in my house even stuff that may contain wheat or CC risks. I was feeling good but for the past 2 days my stomach has been painful and bloated again?

Is it normal for it to go away and come back randomly in the beginning stages of healing ?

Thanks !

Rant Why do they do this

I'm at a group camp where everyone is having dinner together. Someone asked me if I was going to eat so I explained that I have celiac. He then proceeded to name things I could eat, including flour tortillas (they're eating burritos). WHY do they do this?? I think I know what I can eat better than you, buddy.

Discussion Awaiting conclusion

Reposting as my initial post that was removed by the mods.

I am just looking to see if anyone had a similar experience to me and how things turned out.

I have suspected a gluten sensitivity for quite a while, which I know is different from an intolerance/Celiac disease. My MIL has Celiac disease so I have been able to learn a lot from her about Celiac and how different the experience is for everyone.

My symptoms vary from heart racing and GI upset after certain foods (although it doesn't always follow a pattern of specific food, but usually heavier carb foods), bloating, consistent fatigue and migraines. I also have Hashimoto's and PCOS (recently on Metformin for insulin resistance and my TSH is in check with Synthroid) so it's hard to say which diagnosis causes which symptom.

My endoscopy basically says it’s possible I have Celiac or gluten sensitivity (not a definite). I know there is a big difference between the two and completely cutting gluten out vs limiting it. I can't help but feel the last few days I notice more bloating and specific symptoms with certain foods. For example- I had pizza last week and instantly had a terrible migraine. I had a few bites a few days later and felt the headache coming on, but I’m unsure if it's coincidence.

My Gl doctor suggests just cutting gluten out and seeing how I feel. I know how hard it is to bring back into your diet once it's out. I'm getting a full celiac blood panel done on Friday as well. I had a couple of great responses on my post that was removed, hoping to see any other insights!

Product Don’t like Barilla new updated pasta

Upvotes

Ok I’ve really tried to get use to Barilla’s new formula now that it’s only “two ingredients” but it just sticks together and makes the water all starchy. What other pasta brand recommendations do people have? Preferably rice pasta. I’ve tried the heart of palm stuff and hated it. I’m not big on chickpea pasta but would still be open to suggestions with it.

Rant Stupid Store Corporations

I was soooo happy to see new products and more variety in brands in stores like Walmart and Publix. A couple months ago our closest Publix changed its freezer section and eliminated all but 1 gluten free pizza brand. Recently (in the last week or two) our local Walmart has redone its freezer section and now I can only find 2 brands of gluten free pizza with 2 flavors each. AND they’re downsizing the frozen gluten free section: half of the potsticker type products, the garlic toasts, frozen snack type things like mozzarella sticks, etc. are gone now. I’m not the celiac in the relationship, but we’ve made our apartment 100% gluten free. It makes me so frustrated to see all these new options being taken away after only a couple months, and even more frustrated that it affects the person I love.

I just tried these for the first time today and omg they’re the closest things to graham crackers I’ve had to date!! 😭 they’re so good they remind me of the honey grahams I used to eat as a kid! I love their chocolate chip cookies and the confetti cookies but I think these take the cake for me 🤩

Question Do you have hEDS as well as Coeliac?

I am coeliac and have Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) as well - i have just read that 'some large-scale epidemiological studies indicating up to an 8- to 9-fold increase in the odds of individuals with coeliac disease also being diagnosed with EDS'

Is anyone else in the same boat as me and have hEDS as well?
