2018 SE CarPlay journey

Post image

Finally after two other units I have found the holy grail of what I believe to be the best and most OEM look for the gen 8 Camry. I thought it looked outta place but from seeing the new years and the one knob on the dash I was ok with this look. All steering wheel control are functional and this is equipped with android and enough Ram and storage to be future proof for some time. Its Nav bar at the bottom bugged me for a bit but I can add apps at the bottom to seamless switch from and back to CarPlay with no additional reconnection. A HUGE difference in this unit is it doesnt have those tacky side touch buttons like 98 percent of screens have. This also perfectly holds the telltale indicator for airbags and no gaps around the into and AC controls which can be common with aftermarket. BIG bonus is the capability to add cellular connection which I may do down the road.

Just purchased a 2006 5 speed manual for $2,000.

Clean as can be. Excellent service history. 278,000 miles .

Hope it lasts at least until 300k.

Already changed all the fluids. Any other preventative maintenance recommendations to help this baby last as long as possible .

Thanks

So I got wheels a couple days ago, same size as stock just with a +36 offset and I seem to feel more road imperfections and is louder at speeds of 65+. I also feel like the gap between the tires and fenders is slightly bigger but maybe I’m trippin. It kind of looks like the tires r stretched a little bit(stock oem tires) so idk if maybe that’s playing a part. I was also considering lowering it with eibach springs to close the gap a bit more or just getting a thicker sidewall tire when the time comes to replace them, what do u guys think? Also if anyone has experience with the lowering springs and how they affected ride quality, that would be greatly appreciated

Key fobs

Bought a used 2024 which I’m really happy with but only came with one key fob.

I’ve heard Costco has an affordable way to do this but it is extremely rare and just kind of happens unannounced in some way.

Also, is there a key fob case that an AirTag can be placed in rather than just have an AirTag and key fob attached to a keyring?

Question Beeping when washing car and settings reset?

I’d say every time I wash my car myself it lets out a 4-5 second long beep and I don’t know what it means? I want to say it’s when I’m hosing it? Car isn’t on but keys are in the car.

Also I’ve had my car about two months and noticed that my tachometer preference reset along with I think my estimated tank miles left? I was averaging around 500 on a full tank then I filled up two days ago and I was back to 460. This happen to anyone?

Due to a possible piston skirt failure in the near future, I decided to make the move. I wasn’t going to keep the SQ5 out of the extended warranty anyway, so I traded it in earlier than I originally planned. Keeping this until it dies. This is my 4th Camry. My first car was a ‘91. I had a 2000, and a 2007 after that. I also had a 2014 Lexus ES300h (Camry/Avalon platform) that I traded in for the SQ5. This is by far the best and the least boring that I’ve driven.

Question KYB Front Struts for 2012 Camry LXE v6

Howdy folks. I need new struts on my Camry. I have read KYB are the most like OEM. I am having trouble finding KYB quickstruts for this year/trim. I am looking at some other KYB quickstruts that are very similar in terms of dimension though they vary slightly. sr4251/52 for a 2011 (the mounts for arm and brake line are different) and sr4259/60 for a 2012 with the 4cyl. My car is about 200lbs heavier than the 4cyl.

I do not want to swap springs. Anyone tried this?

  1. Will they fit? Mounting looks the same, but will they make the tires rub or bottom out?

  2. Would they be dangerous or handle way worse?

  3. Is it dumb? Better to just go with a something that fits for sure?

Thanks,

Billy

Looking for feedback

Deciding between Camry xle and Tesla model y premium. Looking for recommendations.
I currently work at Tesla and can charge my car onsite for free (I am assuming, must double check). I will get 0.99% APR on Tesla. Not sure about the APR for Camry. My current commute is about 36 miles round trip, and might go between 50-60 miles round trip when I recolate over next few months. Will mostly use the car for work on a daily basis and occasionally to drive around CA during holidays or weekends.

Not sure about insurance rates for both the vehicles.

Thinking for getting the car between Aug-Nov (if I decide to go with Tesla, I want to wait until CA govt. starts the EV rebate program).

Any inputs are appreciated. Posting this in both camry and model y reddits to get a better feedback.

Discussion Upgrading Sound system

Hello Everyone !

I have a 2025 Toyota Camry (GCC spec) which called “Grande”. It comes with the 12.3-inch Toyota Multimedia system, but it does not have the factory JBL audio system.

The higher trim called “Lumiere”uses the same 12.3-inch infotainment system but comes with the OEM JBL package.

Before that I’m trying to understand how different the two systems actually are.
My questions are:

Is the OEM JBL retrofit possible?

Is the main wiring harness the same between JBL and non-JBL models?

Is there already a connector for the JBL amplifier under the drivers seat?

Does the retrofit require replacing the head unit, or is the 12.3-inch unit identical?

Does the system need Techstream coding after installation?

If anyone has access to Toyota wiring diagrams, part catalogs, or has attempted this retrofit, I’d really appreciate any information.

Thanks!

Question What brand of oil are you using ?

Thumbnail

For the DIY maintenance folk out there, what brand of oil are you using ? I’m aware changing the oil more frequently is better than the brand of oil but I’m still curious, I’m currently using Mobil 1 since it was the only economical option at $37 for 5 quarts compared to the oem Toyota oil for $16 a quart. Thinking of using liquimoly but other than that I haven’t seen any other 0w8 oils locally

For the folks who do dealer maintenance I dont care

2013 Camry SE - Acceleration Hesitation

As the title says, Toyota Camry SE 2013 hesitation when accelerating. Gets to about 40mph don't want to push it further. Problem went away a couple of hours later so I don't think its the Cat Converter or a Vacuum leak as I thought originally....

Cleaned the MAP sensor, air filter....

Any other more common issues with this year/model?

No sputtering or vibrations I can feel when going...

TIA

Everyone! Please check for dealer installed KARR “safety” device in your vehicle. They released a firmware update, that has to be installed over the Bluetooth connection.

Does this engine sound fine?

Planning to buy a 2007 Camry with the 3.5 liter 2GR-FE engine for my dad since it's his dream car.

Would just like to know if this engine sounds fine or if there's something out of the ordinary?

Question First road trip

I bought a brand new XLE in April. Coming up on 2K miles. I’m taking it on its first road trip next weekend.

What do I need to know? What mode should I use? Talk to me about cruise control. I have adaptive on for daily driving.

Is the wireless phone charger enough to actually charge the phone while being used for CarPlay or does it just maintain current levels?

Basically tell me what I should know to get the most out of this vehicle on the open road.
