Today, my father asked me for the balances of both my checking and savings accounts. Because of our past interactions, I chose not to disclose the exact balance in my checking account. For example, if my checking account balance was $800, I told him it was $700. However, I did provide him with the correct balance for my savings account.
In response, he asked, “Isn’t there $800 in your checking account?” This surprised me because I do not understand how he knew the actual balance.
For context, my bank account is solely in my name. I opened it myself, it is not a joint account, and my father does not have my debit card, debit card number, online banking username, password, or access to my mobile banking app. As far as I know, he has not been given authorization to access my account information.
I am trying to understand how he could have known the exact balance in my checking account despite not having access to my banking credentials or account.

I've been reading a lot of reviews that the biggest downfall is customer service from SoFi. How bad is it and would you still recommend the move? If not, what bank do you recommend?

My son's debit card was used for fraudulent purchases on Apple. My bank flagged them and they were all declined. We got a new card and activated it yesterday and added it to his Apple Pay. Today, more fraud charges on the new card. It has not left the house and he hasn't even used it once. So how? I check Gemini AI and learn about some sort of digital tokens that the bank or Mastercard automatically shares with Apple to ensure subscriptions are not interrupted (like that's their responsibility?!)? Something about digital tokens and automatic billing updater. Supposedly a convenience for everyone but all it ended up doing was feeding the new card right back to the fraudster. What a dumb system.

I call the bank who feigns total ignorance and takes zero accountability, can do nothing but issue me a new card. I ask if this card will be fed right back to the scammer like the last and they basically shrug.

What do I do? I'm thinking the easiest path is to go to a branch, close the account and immediately open a new one so the account is entirely severed from the original card.

Assuming theres no ill intent, conflict of interest, etc. occuring after the fact. I've heard some bank tellers say its ok, and some saying its unprofessional. Some people just give off real friend vibes despite it being a professional workplace.

Or are Bank Tellers cursed to never make friends with people that bank with them?

I recently sold my laptop for 700$ USD.
The guy gave me 5 hundreds with blue strips and 2 of the older hundred. We meet at the police station. I just rubbed my thumb on the shoulders and felt the texture and held them up against light for the face on the right. One of the older bills (no blue strip) felt off but I deposited all the bills into bank ATM. The Atm accepted all the bills if the ATM accepted all the bills am I good ? I deposited it Monday night at an ATM after hours at the my local credit union branch. If I don’t hear anything from bank after like 2 weeks I should be good right. Maybe Im overthinking it.

Hi--I need some help. The son of a friend of mine called me for advice and assistance but I'm not sure if there are any banking regulations that would apply here.

The shortest version of the facts: the guy gets a call from someone posing as an FBI agent investigating fraud in his Chase Bank account. The person knew his account info and how much money he had in the account. He then sends him a very official looking email with additional information, convincing the guy that he is who he says he is.

He then convinces my guy to go to his Chase bank branch, get cashier's check for a mid-5-figure amount, made payable to a "Malik Ponds" and deposit it at another Chase branch. They tell him this is his "alias" name for an account, and they're going to use it to monitor the fraud. This all happened on 6/18. The following day was Juneteenth. By June 22, my guy realizes something is wrong and goes to Chase and tries to stop the transaction from going through.

Important--the receipt from the cashier's check contains a delayed deposit availability statement, stating the funds will be available on 6/23.

So he goes to Chase on 6/22 and raises the red flag. He's told they will look into it. Days later they tell him the funds were withdrawn and they can't help him.

So the question now is--does Chase have some obligation to not allow the transfer of the funds before the 6/23 availability date? Is there a regulation that would govern this? My assumption is that because they were both Chase branches, the funds obviously cleared faster, but because of the large amount should they have continued to hold the funds until 6/23?

This guy isn't rich. He's a hardworking, blue collar guy that saved his money. He just got tricked.

I'm trying to clear and close an account. Interest will post after the close of business Friday so I won't know the total balance to push out until late Friday or early Saturday. It's only a couple hundred dollars at 3% so a day or two won't really make any difference, but I'd hate to leave an account with only a few cents.

Hi, so I recently graduated and got a job a month ago as a teller at a credit union, but I’m already starting to consider my future aspects. I don’t plan on looking for a job any time soon, this job is really easy and I like it regardless of it not paying that much, but I can’t help but wonder. Is it hard to move up as a teller within the branch you are in, or even find a better job outside the branch? I have a degree in accounting but I have literally no internships besides one short and lowkey kind of insignificant internship at EY that was more of like a character development thing.

I also have no other work experience besides working at Walmart for one month during the summer, so I really have not much else going for myself besides this teller job. They do have an accounting department inside the branch, but I think it would be pretty hard to jump from tellering to accounting. It doesn’t even have to be accounting because I honestly chose that major at random, I’m just curious how hard it is to move to any better position to be honest.

Hi everyone, I recently, seemingly, had a replacement debit card stolen from my mail, activated, and somehow used to make two withdrawals from 2 accounts at two seperate branches totaling $3500 ( one business and one personal, $1700 and $1800)
I noticed my two debits were expired and my mailing address was never updated since we bought a new house in 2024. I proceeded to change my mailing address in my banks app and requested new cards. One card arrived promptly but a second card did not. I looked at my balances today and noticed that yesterday there were the 2 withdrawals on my accounts USING THE SAME DEBIT CARD. I don’t know how that is even possible.
I called the bank right away, they froze and closed everything and advised to go in branch tomorrow in person to open new accounts + file an affidavit and start the fraud process. The customer service rep said that the card used was mailed a little over a week ago (meaning it was mailed to the correct address), activated 2 days ago, and then used yesterday to make the two withdrawals. I do not have more info than that right now as I am waiting till banks open to go in person (unsure if it was teller or ATM, PIN code used or not, how they activated it etc- will be getting more details in branch hopefully). How could that even happen? How likely am I to see that money returned to me?

Hi, looking for a bit of advice here while the merchant hasn't responded. Somewhere around last month (25th June) I tried to make an online payment with my debit card to a merchant (private counselling firm), but the payment said failed at the checkout. However the amount I needed to pay was already deducted from my bank account. I checked my account history and there was no proof of transaction that happened while the amount was already deducted. I called the bank and they told me the reason it happened was that the money got put in 'floating' status and went nowhere, and that I have to check it regularly for 14 business days.

2 weeks ago I asked the bank again if the amount was transferred already, and they told me it's still in 'floating' status, and that it's just 8 business days. They told me to call the merchant if I wanted it faster, but chose to wait it out instead.

Yesterday I called the bank and they claimed the floating amount was claimed by said merchant after 14 business days, but like I said it was a failed transaction and there was no appointment booked. I also checked my account history and there was no proof of the transaction to show that the payment went through. I asked the merchant to see if I could claim the money back, but it's been 21 hours and they haven't reached me. In case they're asking for proof, how can I prove that my money got claimed and that it's from a failed transaction, even though there's no transaction history? There was at least a record of floating amounts claimed by the bank, but that's from the bank side when I called.

Sorry for the long typing. Previously, my money got stuck as 'floating' status a few times but most of the time it just bounced back into my account after a couple of days, but this is the first time it got stuck for 14 days and claimed by the merchant.

I've never had any problems with Telus and been working with them for 2 years now maybe.

Now, for the first time, I am still waiting for my May payment from Telus.

After emailing with Hyperwallet back and forth, they told me that:

"At the moment, the payment is on a temporary compliance hold. Our processing bank has requested additional information as part of their review, and the funds are safely held during this process.

Once the review is complete, the payment will either be credited to your bank account or returned to the original portal."

Anyone else had this issue? This is the first time for me in 2 years and in 10 days I am expected to receive the payment for June.

Should I request a withdraw for the June payment or wait?

This is going on for two weeks now.

Hi, so the other day I tried to add my card info to my moms phone to purchase an app for her but she switched banks and is waiting for her new card numbers. but she forgot to mention that she since she canceled her old card, she owed apple money for previous subscriptions so my card ended up getting charged 3 times (her previous subscription and the app in total which was ($27.97). On her phone it said it declined all three times, but on my bank of america app, it shows that they took out the money. A total of $83.91. I thought the bank would give me my money back since the transactions all said "pending" but I checked today and all 3 transactions are gone from my account as if I never had it but yet I am still missing money. I called my bank and they said since my card declined they removed the transactions completely. But I'm still short the $83 bucks. I have screenshots of when my account was charged those days. When this happened two days ago I stopped using my card completely. So I haven't made any new purchases but when I check and add everything up I'm missing exactly 83.91 which is the total times 3. Helppppp 😐😐😐😭😭😭

This bank sucks. They put exorbitant holds on checks drawn from their own bank. “On us” checks as they are called in the industry are drawn on funds within their own accounts and at other banks treated as “cash.” Not at this bank. They dont trust their own money. Therefore I dont trust them either and will be voting with my wallet and feet.

He is in a nursing home, probably long term, and will not be present or able to make the deposit. Nursing homes are expensive and he will need to make payments so he wants it transferred from the safe to the actual bank. It's a combination of life savings and ss deposits from him and his wife (deceased) over the years.

1. Anything I need to let him know about before, during, after deposit? Like he will be contacted by the bank or any government departments or IRS?
2. Should I deposit it all at once or in two?

Hello, curious about how this should be handled or for advice.

I put $25k down on a car, with a personal check. I got a call from the dealership saying their bank wouldn't accept the check because I had $25,000 instead of $25,000.00 in the amount box. They asked if I could simply resend them a check to fix this error (I am over an hour away from the dealership). In the legal line, I did include 00/100 out of habit. There's not much space for that many digits in the amount box, which is why I likely didn't include .00 at the time.

Should I be worried about re-sending them a check? Also, who is at fault in this scenario? I wrote the check, but they accepted it without issue.

So it’s been 2 years since the divorce, and we thought we had it settled. But they put me on their account and we both signed to get me off back then, but unknown to me their mom is on their account so it didn’t remove me because she didn’t sign. Cut to now, it’s effecting my approval for getting my house, so I’m trying to get off it, but they’re making it as painful as possible to get me off. Is there a way I can go about this?
