Unemployed accountant for almost 2 years

I walked across the stage in high school and pledged that I would walk out of poverty.

14 years later after accomplishing so much even achieving my dream job at a top financial firm but wanting to prioritize location during the pandemic so I had to resign and gain experience at other companies, I can’t find a job. I’m either under qualified or over qualified. I interviewed for 2 of the same type of roles one last week and one this week one being senior and the other not. The senior role I don’t have the direct experience but she said I’m great at interviews the non senior role I’m too experienced. What job can I have then?

During this time off I had some time to reflect on some of my regrets and I have made a few. I didn’t understand corporate etiquette and that’s my biggest regret. I didn’t understand how to have a mentor I didn’t know what that meant or how to do that. I always performed well at work….

I sit in regrets. Seeing my peers as vice presidents etc…and I’m home unemployed, rotting

Don’t mind my grammar etc… this is a rant

Advice Adjusting QBO Operating Leases to IFRS 16 Balance Sheet Liabilities

Hello accountants,

If you have clients using QuickBooks Online as their core GL but needing IFRS-compliant financial statements, IFRS 16 (Leases) is usually where the biggest manual balance sheet adjustment happens.

  • The Core Gap: In QBO, rent payments are almost always booked directly as a debit to Rent Expense and a credit to Cash/Bank. Under IFRS 16, operating lease accounting is eliminated for lessees (with minor exceptions for short-term/low-value assets).
  • Required Adjustments:
    1. Eliminate the QBO Rent Expense entries for the reporting period.
    2. Recognize the Right-of-Use (ROU) Asset and Lease Liability calculated at the present value of future lease payments.
    3. Record Depreciation Expense on the ROU Asset (straight-line) and Interest Expense on the Lease Liability (effective interest method).
  • Audit Trail Tip: Always maintain a separate schedule mapping QBO cash outflow entries against the lease amortization schedule. Auditors will specifically look for the reversal entry of native QBO Rent Expense to ensure double-counting hasn't occurred.

Hope this serves as a quick technical refresher for anyone handling QBO to IFRS adjustments this quarter.

Privacy screens at work?

I work at a pretty small public accounting firm. It’s a super small office and my desk is sort of central next to the printer and file cabinet. My desk and monitors are just out in the open and my bosses will NOT let me switch my desk so that my back is to the wall. So currently I’m facing a wall so my monitors are super clearly visible. My co workers frequently walk by my desk and comment on what I’m working on. I also have this one boss (one of the partners)… he will just come up behind me several times a day to look at my screen. On one occasion I stepped away to speak with another partner and forgot to lock my laptop - I found him behind my seat looking over my work papers and screen. On more than one occasion there have been weird comments made about me researching a topic like “why are you looking that up when you can ask me” or “what are you using chat gpt for”. I frequently feel anxious about people looking at and judging me for whatever. Also, I don’t really use my work computer for anything personal and if it is , it’s nothing I’m scared of people seeing or anything like that.

So I’m thinking of installing privacy screens on my two monitors. Would this look weird or strange? I just can’t stand the lack of privacy particularly with my one boss. It just drives me crazy.

Does anyone have recommendations and which ones to buy.

Career Need help with a pivotal career decision

Hey everyone, I wanted to see what your honest thoughts are on my situation:

I've spent 4 years in external audit at a mid-tier firm. After months of interviews, I managed to land an offer to join Big 4 as a senior in internal auditing. I was planning on staying for 2-3 years to make manager and then exit to industry, hopefully at a big public company with nice stock options.

Unexpectedly, I received another offer to join a family friend's small accounting firm providing mainly tax services (personal, corporate, payroll). The expectation is that I would take over the firm in 1-2 years max since they are retiring soon. They conservatively project that I would make around $800-750K. It would still be much higher than any manager in Big 4 or in industry. They are also willing to teach me how to do tax. I've tried to see if I can do the work for a couple of days, and I noticed it takes me a very long time to review the staff's tax work (0.5 hr for each payroll tax, 1.5 hours for personal tax return, 2 hours for corporate tax return). My main concern is that I would be running the business with little experience in doing so.

This decision has been eating me alive, and I wanted to see what y'all would do if you were me. Should I take the Big 4 offer or try taking over the business?

Why are reddit people more discouraging than my own professors?

I struggled with my major since I am getting low 60s in Accounting (I am almost done my diploma/ associate degree at college ) and the amount of discouraging I got was shocking. People tell me to not go for bachelor and even as far as switching major despite almost completing my diploma.. 16/20 courses done with a 3.08 gpa. Passing gpa to graduate is 2.0... Even my professor who did marked cpa told me to persuade bachelor.... I asked reddit since they may gave me harsh criticism but good feedback that maybe encouraging.. I was wrong.

I was thinking of doing my bachelor in accounting to do treasury analyst. My friend has a bachelor of acct and never did cpa. Maybe I could try CTP. I was fasting during Ramadan and took two acct course. Finishes both acct course with 61% in Intermediate Financial accounting 1 and 58% in intro to managerial accounting (barely studied as I heavily prioritized intermediate). I can planning on working my way up without doing cpa.. That was the worst semester I did. I decided to never take two acct in the same semester

What do you guys do on PTO?

Upvotes

For context I’m an audit senior at a top 10 firm. My manager has basically told me I have to use my PTO soon (I have only taken like 2 days off so far this year). While this probably seems like a good thing, I genuinely don’t have any idea of what to do during that time.

Basically I’m a single dude who’s 28 and lives by himself. My hobbies basically include working out (daily), video games, and cars. I’m not to big of a traveler either. For the last few years my life has basically been, work, study for cpa, and gym. I often feel really bored when I’m not at work, and I’m the kind of person that just wants to be busy and have stuff to do.

Just trying to see what you guys do on PTO, or have any suggestions for someone like me.

Discussion Can someone check if this is true?

I had a discussion with a Redditor about the ways movie studio's avoid tax. First I thought he was stupid but after a few comments he tickled my curiousity, I started wondering if it maybe can be true because the accounting/tax rules here (Netherlands) are obviously different than in the US. Could someone explain if it's true/false?

The Odyssey (2026) and Moana (2026) both cost $250 million to make. This is because....Wait, what? : r/shittymoviedetails

Career What are the odds of making controller without a CPA?

Hiya!

I’m an accounting manager. While I’m not a CPA, I’ve gathered from other accountants on this sub that I am already doing controller level work.

I’d like to refrain from rehashing most of it but I started out as a Senior a little over a year ago at this company (v small), got promoted a couple months ago. One of my biggest accomplishments as a Senior was that I’ve been able to reduce month-end close from all month down to 5 days. I’m working on a lot of other improvements now and basically am the skeleton of the department. All current processes I’ve developed, all templates and workflows I created, and nothing gets past me.

However, the salary, from what I’ve gathered does not equal my blood sweat and tears. Especially for the complete mess I’m cleaning up from whoever had a hold of the department prior. 97k with 10% bonus at MCOL.

I figured it would be time to start job searching, but most titles above accounting manager seem to heavily require a CPA. And I understand why, but is it really impossible to go without?

I just don’t think I have the bandwidth or ever would until I’m able to rely on my (future) husband to study full time and go full steam, and that might be 1-2 years from now. I’m used to a rapid progression in this career and really only skipped the CPA right out of school for financial and family reasons.

I guess I could technically stick it out here and see if they’ll make me a controller?

What would you do

Senior in tax making $95k in MCOL. Got a job offer for senior accountant role with a medium size manufacturing company. It pays $92.5k but you get 15 PTO days and 7 paid holidays, 10% bonus, 4% 401k

Am I crazy if I don’t take it because we get more PTO at big 4 (4.5 weeks plus two weeks for shutdown). Also new role is fully in person vs 1-2 days in a week in my situation.

Wrestling with time off and commute still (42 minute commute both ways, 5 days week, 48 weeks a year. Is that crazy?)

Automated receipt matching: did it stop your month-end receipt chase?

Our policy is clear, but the same pattern repeats: someone buys something, ignores the receipt prompt, finance follows up twice, and the manager becomes the bad cop near close. The amount is usually small. The interruption cost is not.

For teams that improved compliance, what changed employee behavior? Immediate mobile prompts, card restrictions after repeated misses, manager escalation, or a simpler policy?

I am not looking for a punishment system. I want a process that gets the documentation while the purchase is still fresh and does not make managers police every coffee or taxi.

Should you leave your firm after getting CPA?

I’ve heard others say the benefit of the CPA is not with your current firm but more so your next firm — you can use the CPA to negotiate for better pay at your next job. Is there any merit to this?

Discussion Career options in accounting

Hello, I am 21F. I currently have an AA in business and working as an Accountant for a service and body shop. I’ve been here for about a year and eventually, with more experience with them I should top around 75k a year.

I am happy with where I am at, I make less than that at the moment but I know I have potential to make more.

My deal is that I have a lot of wants in life, and I have horses and what not so I don’t feel like 75k is going to be sufficient enough forever.

Would I be able to find a higher paying job than this with only my AA and accounting experience?
What are some certification options or recommendations as to what I can do to move up from here in the future.

question about reward points and 1099

I am creating an online marketing SAAS platform (like Yelp or Groupon - sort of).

My service will offer referral "Bucks" to be used at discounts at participating businesses.  This will be similar to airline miles. Basically, if someone refers a business to my platform, I give them like $50 in promotion credits (bucks), to be used like at a restaurant they like.  The restaurant gives the discount, and I pay the business back.

My question is, do I need to give a 1099 to the customer who to get the discount?  So if they got say $4000 for referring a bunch of businesses in discount bucks, do I need to worry about that from an IRS perspective?

Thanks,

Career Remote Accounting Salary Reality?

Upvotes

Hi all,

I've been collecting data from remote accounting adjacent roles adertised in the USA. I used data from about ~10,000 jobs advertised in the last 3 months to calculate market salary averages.

I collected data directly from company ATS pages, where the job was adverised as remote.

Below are the values calculated.. because the values are based on salary values companies have listed on their own job listings, I am not sure how that affects accuracy? Maybe positions that publicly disclose salaries tend to skew higher?

If anyone here works remote, would be nice to hear your take on how these figures line up and if they match your reality?

Easy App Integrations

We have a small biz, selling art goods in north texas.

We use square for taking payments, no issues. It gives us reports, we pay ourselves via direct deposit from the biz checking acct it provides us, and we transfer funds from it to our local credit union where we have a savings account, since we did not qualify for their savings account.

We were using sheets for bookkeeping but come tax time we realized we didn’t have much of a structure and panicked. Our local H&R Block rep told us about the Wave app, which we downloaded.

I like that we can snap pics of receipts and upload them, but I’m lost on how to use it for anything else. We have no need for invoices, nor payroll, just something where we could ideally upload the sales reports Square generates for us, as well as transactions from our checking and savings accounts to include our direct deposit payments, and the receipts when they come up, then have it all demonstrated neatly and in order where we can send it to an accountant when taxes are due.

We have even used Open Collective, to try and participate in transparent accountable financial practices, but I am lost at how it might fit in for all of this. We currently are registered as an LLC, but are considering moving to an S-corps and possibly even a non-profit, as we are a small local art collective of different independent artists selling under one tent/name/business/booth, and sharing costs/expenses while keeping our own portions of the income made from our own items, while offering a sliding scale pricing model and partnering with local non-profits and charities to support our community.

I’m at a loss on how to most efficiently integrate all of this information, what model is best for us, & how to make taxes and reporting simplified. We’re all newbs with social study degrees, not business experience.

Any advice would help. Thanks so much.

Which Mid-Tier Firm Opens the Most Doors?

I'm not looking at the Big 4. I’m specifically interested in which mid-tier accounting firm has the strongest name and reputation on a CV.

Based on your own experience or what you've heard from recruiters and colleagues, which firms are generally the most respected? I'm thinking of firms like BDO, Grant Thornton, RSM, Crowe, Forvis Mazars, Baker Tilly, and similar firms.

Which one has the strongest brand, best training, and the best reputation when it comes to future career opportunities?

I'd love to hear your rankings and the reasons behind them.

Personal credit affected by corporate credit card?

Upvotes

Working at one of the big national labs in the United States. They issued a credit card to me for business travel. It has my name on the card, but is paid by the finance department of my lab... I don't know how, they just handle everything. Recently they've been auditing all travel and have lost a few people in that department AND had people out on vacation. They warned staff that the cards will be showing as past due but not to worry and continue travel as normal. It's been more than 30 days past due and is quickly getting close to 60 days past due... they just issued a statement today saying "US Bank has also confirmed that its Credit Department does not report late payments to credit bureaus, so these delays will not affect your personal credit score."

Does that sound correct?? Or.... like what if it's 60 days or 90 days, will US Bank really just not care? This is stressful...

IPE Tools

IPE Tools

Hi all,

Just wondering what all of ya'll are using for SOX compliance for journal support and balance support.

In our process we take snippets when we're running reports on SAP, and drop those snippets into our excel support for either a journal or balance support, then it goes to Blackline.

This process seems a bit archaic, although solid in terms of evidence.

Are ye using anything faster?

Guys confused

Hello guys I am confused. I got an offer from a local accounting firm in Edmonton. Where they want me to work 3 hours a day, so 15 hours per week. Per hour wage is minimum.

Currently, I am working in the kitchen full time and I also do security part time 30 hours per week. I earn around 4K a month in two jobs.
If I join accounting firm, I have to leave security job and I will loose around 1200 dollars a month.

I got my job in a field but financially I am not sure, how will I manage and provide for the family.

What should I do please guide.

Thanks
