Current Outlook

Storm Prediction Center Jul 22, 2026 2000 UTC Day 1 Convective Outlook - Tornado Risk 2%

...THERE IS A MARGINAL RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OVER PARTS OF THE MID ATLANTIC AND NEW ENGLAND...SOUTHEAST TEXAS...THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS AND CENTRAL OREGON....

...SUMMARY... Isolated to widely scattered storms remain possible across the Carolinas and southern Mid-Atlantic, as well as New England this afternoon and early evening, with damaging winds as the primary concern. Isolated strong to severe wind gusts are also possible in the central High Plains, southeast Texas and central Oregon, where isolated large hail will also be possible.

...20z Update New England... A broken band of strong to occasionally severe convection remains ongoing ahead of a progressive cold front over northern and eastern New England this afternoon. Weak buoyancy, but fairly strong deep-layer shear (35-45 kt) should support isolated hail, and damaging winds with stronger clusters or supercell structures this afternoon. A brief tornado also remains possible across northern ME where low-level shear is locally stronger. The primary change this outlook cycle was to lower overall severe probabilities and remove them behind the front where the air mass has stabilized.

...Mid Atlantic and Carolinas... Farther south, the cold front has become increasingly zonally oriented and slowed as the upper trough has lifted away to the northeast. A warm and very moist environment remains in place across southeastern VA into northern NC. However, poor mid-level lapse rates and decreasing vertical shear have limited convective organization and intensity. Some renewed intensity is possible along the convectively modified boundary/differential heating axis along the NC/VA border this afternoon and evening. However, the severe threat (predominately damaging gusts) is expected to remain isolated into this evening. Severe probabilities have been lowered and adjusted to better match the main focal area for severe storms near the VA/NC border through this evening.

Elsewhere, isolated severe gusts/hail remain possible over parts of the central High Plains and the southeast TX. Isolated hail is also possible over parts of central OR. Scattered storms are expected late this afternoon through the evening. No changes were made to theses areas, see the previous discussion for more information.

This is from my aunt. Now, where I live is near Leeper, Pennsylvania, I heard from a neighbor that a rotation was spotted moving south not far from where I live. The person who spotted the rotation is south of where I live.

I work at WNY and this year alone, NY has had 8 tornados. I dont know if lake erie is causing major shift in weather patterns hence the more frequent tornados.

I am aware that thunderstorms are often weakened over our lake but nados, not sure.

Anyways. Here's a few clips of some clouds that look like they want to funnel. Ive never seen an actual tornado so I am excited anytime I get close.

Thoughts on the cloud formation ?

It was truly amazing seeing these low topped supercells overcome the dry midlevels and produce multiple tornadoes. Low level CAPE is a thing of beauty.

We just moved to the area in the past week, so naturally my first week puts us between two tornadoes 🥹 The first one that appeared near Dover stayed north of us, and the one that formed after near Morristown stayed south but extended our previous warning.

Aftermath For a brief moment the Round rock Texas tornado produced insane cycloidal marks and i haven't seen any mention of this online. 3/21/2022

Post image

This seemingly weak ish tornado exhibited cycloidal scars in a field for a brief amount of time before rapidly weakening before entering more populated areas. I think its fascinating how a tornado can intensify this quickly and then rapidly weakening again. I wanted to know what you guys think since theres zero mention of this anywhere online.

Discussion Experiencing the insanely frustrating flaws of an outdated system

Instead of polygon-based trajectory warnings, Environment Canada uses a by county system.

The problem is, the storm that they were tracking wasn't going from Arnprior to Hawkesbury, it was actually heading toward Clarence-Rockland, and the warning happened when it was about to head into Clarence-Rockland.

So, they warned the entire span of city and county (with a population of over 1 million people) behind the storm about a storm that wasn't anywhere near them.

Not to mention, our severe outlook forecasting system, the ECCC thunderstorm outlook, didn't use their icon that displays the potential for environments that can cause tornadoes for this area today. They don't have a text description detailing the reason behind their decision on the forecast like the SPC does. We just get an image.

This is like what happened during the 2018 Ottawa-Gatineau tornado outbreak, when an EF2 and EF3 went through the area. No forecast, but there was no warning.

Lots of people in America like to watch livestreams and coverage for their area, but it isn't necessarily their only warning and forecast. We literally have to outsource an independent team of meteorologists to make the polygons, make a detailed forecast and clear up the confusion that our NATIONAL SYSTEM is causing.

I'm sure you guys have seen some pretty insane Canadian tornadoes pop up on this subreddit. I want you to know that this is what we're dealing with. These are the systems we have to protect us. We use American radars, because ours keep failing/crashing.
