On day 17 of quitting

Upvotes

I'm on day 17 of quitting and I have unbearable muscle ache and brain fog for couple of days now. I though I overcame the worst part but now it's getting hard to focus on work and pretty much do anything. I wake up dehydrated every morning with dry mouth. I have no cravings so even with these symptoms I don't wanna start but I want this to be over. Has anyone experience such a thing?

Day 4, motivation tanking

Upvotes

Hello all,

wanted to write this down just to get it out of my system and maybe so someone can share something to get me on track.

Thing is, I've successfully not smoked a cigarette since Sunday. I've had a trip in the car to see family, spent the day outside, had a very minor road incident, had quite a taxing therapy appointment, had a day at home, today I'll go out & meet friends, taking the bus this time. So wide range of situations, two or three 10/10 triggers that I made it past, and I should be really proud and all, but I'm feeling more demotivated somehow. I feel the improvement in my body and I feel like the physical craving has receded which tells me my brain is calming down with wanting nicotine. I feel like I've never been more aware of how harmful smoking is, how expensive etc etc. I did the preparation period, I worked through the brochure, I use the apps, I'm reading that Carr book, I don't even feel like I'm having a horribly hard time not lighting up, even though some moments it sucked.

But I'm just not happy, somehow. I don't know if it's that expectations were too high, mental games my addiction brain is playing, putting rose tinted glasses on to look back at smoking with, or all of the above, but I feel honestly a little depressed and lethargic now. Like I miss those little pick me ups that smoke breaks were for me, be they illusions or not. Subjectively, it felt like a positive spike, and it feels like now I've just gone to no spikes, flat line. And it's like... shrugging and going hm. I feel like when I was smoking I got more excited and moved by things around me, now everything is take it or leave it. Anyone been through something like this? When does it pass? Is there a replacement for cigarettes for this mood? Because like going for a walk or eating veg or what have you all feel like chores, not treats, and maybe that's what's frustrating me, that I don't get to have anything that feels like a treat anymore throughout the day (I'm already like trying to enjoy my coffee and make it more special and similar). Probably stuck in a spiraling loop, but knowing this doesn't help get me out of it - I just kinda wish I was back a week ago when I was a smoker.

Sidenote: I've been considering stopping on off and aware of negatives I didn't like for a while, but decided to quit kind of out of the blue because my sister has bronchitis and had to stop and I didn't want to let her go through the stopping alone. 27, been smoking since I was 16-ish, was at ~10 a day, quit cold turkey.

IBS-D caused by smoking

Did anyone that was a smoker have found that the Diarrhea and sensitive gut was caused by tobacco/nicotine? And did the symptoms vanish after quitting smoking?

I need some advice

Hello everyone! So i really want to quit smoking cigarettes and using nicotine, but i just cant get past one or maximum 2 days. i tried like 6 times already and my record is 5 days clean.

Can you give me some advice how to go through the first couple days/weeks? im feeling really restless, irritable and unmotivated after 8 hours clean and always happen to relapse and smoke again.

im going cold turkey, because reducing the amount of cigarettes smoked per day was never working for me.

Thank you!

Hour 72 has passed....

Sooo... 2 years and 8 months ago i decided to quit smoking weed, and so i did. Cold turkey i decided to just never smoke the green grass ever again, and so i did. And it was a walk in the park, with a light breeze and some sunshine...

Well 3 days ago i decided to quit smoking regular cigarettes too, and well so i did. Except this time in was not a walk in the park with a light breeze and somme sunshine. It feels like a never ending walk in the park with windstorms going 29 kilometers per hour and hail and snow and lighting strikes every other second.

I am in agony with a 10/10 craving every second of the day, it doesnt eb and flow like most people describe. I barely sleep, i'm lucky if im getting 3 hours of good quality sleep, and even if i do sleep i dream so vividly that i barely feel rested.
I expected to cough up some more stuff, but i barely notice any difference when i cough, and maybe im impatient that could be obviously.

I am also scared shitless to gain weight. I've been fat my whole life to the point where i did weightloss surgery 4 years ago which resulted in me losing 60KG's, which i already gained 5 ish back just normally. I am absolutely mortified to gain back more and everyone i know has gained 15-20KG's after quitting smoking.

I feel like i'm quitting harddrugs and it feels ENDLESS, hopeless and not worth it (its the opposite probably but addiction brain am i right) Can someone who's been there done that pleaseee share their experience with timestamps etc if you want ofcourse. I could use a village that knows what quitting addiction is like. (i have a lovely village that supports me and i dont have to do it alone but they have never been addicted to anything so they just dont get certain stuff)

Has anyone in Australia managed to get Desmoxan ?

I’ve been vaping for over 7 years now and I’m feeling pretty defeated.

I’ve tried quitting a few times over the years, but I never made it past the first couple of days. More recently, I actually made it just over a week without vaping, which is the longest I’ve ever gone. Unfortunately, the withdrawals became too much.

I became incredibly emotional, angry and frustrated. I was snapping at my boyfriend over nothing, I would cry over everything, I would get so angry over anything. I couldn’t think straight, I felt like I couldn’t work and do my job. It was really impacting my work and ended up causing me so much stress I couldn’t handle it and it was affecting every part of my life.

I’ve been researching Desmoxan (cytisine) and honestly I’ve mostly come across really positive experiences from people saying it made quitting much easier. I was ready to give it a go, but then I found out it apparently isn’t available in Australia.

From what I can tell, the Australian prescription alternative is varenicline (Champix). I looked up reviews and there are multiple stories about severe side effects (including psychosis!??? and major sleep disruption. My sleep is very important to me. I don’t think I am willing to try this one even if it works for some people.

So my question has anyone in Australia managed to get Desmoxan product somehow?

If not, are there any better alternatives????

I’m am motivated to quit, I just don’t want to go through another week of feeling like I can’t function or risk taking something that could make me feel even worse.

I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

It's hard today (just a rant)

I quit 2 months ago and, as it was a promise to my son, I won't relapse. But Nicotina, that little monster's voice, was so loud today.

I had to take one of my cats to the clinic today, hopefully he'll be ok in a few days. But still,I had to book an appointment in emergency, while taking care of my son (yeah, full time solo parent here)

That's the stupidest cat you can imagine. But I love that idiot, no matter how ugly or stupid he is. So I found him an emergency appointment at the opposite side of the city, took a lot of public transport with a sick cat and a 6 year old son.

I thought so much about smoking while I was looking for a solution, while we were waiting that tramway, while we were in the waiting room. Evil Nicotina shouting in my head:" it would be soooo nice to just smoke one, you'd feel so much better!" I didn't listen. I didn't smoke. But that was hell.

The vet was awesome, and will do everything possible to help that stupid cat getting better (it will probably cost more than a little, but it is what it is)

I don't know how long that silly cat will have to stay in the clinic. And you know what? We're going on holiday in 2 days and obviously I can't cancel because my son has been waiting this holiday for months. I found someone who can take care of my cats, so that's ok, everything is under control. Evil Nicotina, that naughty voice, is whispering: "a cigarette would be such a nice reward!" I won't listen. She will shut up, eventually. But f***, it's hard today.

If you read all of this, thank you. Hope it's easier for you right now.

It’s been a long time since an attempt to quit has gone this long, and this time feels so much easier. But my previous longest is a whole year quit, so I’m not really celebrating much till then! But even a few weeks can feel like an accomplishment.

I’ve lurked around this sub for some inspiration from time to time, so I thought I’d share in case it helps anyone!

Day 3

Today is day 3 for me, cold turkey! Why is this so hard? The anxiety is unreal and the dizziness is no joke!

I could use some support, or even a funny joke would help.

I think im about to slip

I messed up and I feel like I'm about to slip up. I don't want to... help!

Edit: Thank you to those who talked me down and helped me through. I'm glad to say I didn't slip or cave in at all. The first week is so freaking hard, but we have to keep fighting.

Working thru Emotion

I (31y/o m) yelled at my dad (81y/o I live with him, but I've only lived with him for the past year, before that Ihad little to no relationshipto him) today.

This is written by voice to text. Mostly. Done if it is just me being bad at typing. It's unedited and raw. I just need to put it somewhere.

Yelled yelled at my dad i did. He yelled loud first. Then I did.

I texted him recently and said that I wanted to talk more.

He tried to wiggle his way out of it. I started to quit smoking, just using gum and Zyns and exercise. I'm struggling. I need lots of support.

He told me he was ready to chat. He got the original letter that he sent me proposing the idea for me to come live with him. He asked me how I experienced receiving that letter. I told him: "the letter was given to ginger. Ginger held onto it for a couple of weeks before I was able to get it from her when she told me that she had a letter from dad. I didn't care.I thought to myself.Well, she's either gonna give it to me.Eventually when she sees me, or she's not the next time I saw her.She didn't have it.She had it at her house. She said, can you come to my house to come?Get it I said no. The next time I saw ginger, she had it. She gave me a big yellow envelope and I i opened it, and saw that there was a packet of something or other in it.There was lots of papers among the papers.I flipped through and found a five dollar bill.I took the five dollar bill and I put it in my pocket. And then I put the papers away, not having read them back into the envelope, and I put the envelope somewhere and forgot about it. Basically just discarded."

I told my dad also that I eventually read the papers, " when I read the papers, I thought of this idea that you proposed, and I thought there's no way. So this guy hasn't really been there for me, my whole life. And then all of a sudden, i'm just gonna go move my whole life to go to him. To go back to school? I don't think so."

Then I told him, " i talked to my mom about it and she said, well, I think you should just go and I thought about it for a long time. I started talking to you more dad. I started texting you more and you told me a lot of your thoughts and you propose that I go visit you in october for a couple of days and get to know you and olga, a little bit better. And see how I feel."

I told him, " after that trip coming home from that trip?I also thought it's out of the question.I'm not going to move to maryland my dad doesn't even understand that he abused my mom.I have eight other accounts that say that he did."

He told me, "I wasn't expecting that kind of answer"

I told him, "more negative than you were expecting?"

He said, "majorly" and then started yelling, getting real mad and pitiful. Saying that his wife and family left him. He was abandoned. Not the other way around. He thinks that he did what was right and his wife was wrong to leave him. He said he was never abusive. Abuse leaves bruises. (This whole dialog was at volume level 10 with a very angry tone and littered with fuck and shit and other profanities that suggested that he's pissed)

I scream at him, making sure to be twice as loud as him and twice as angry as him, "well when you yell, it has an effect on other people" slamming my fists into the couch, " how do you think that I feel right now? If you have a wife and you are yelling, and she has asked you to stop. And tries to talk to you, and you yell, that is abuse. You are not listening to her. When you yell at someone, their heart rate goes up. Their breathing, they feel nervous. They feel unsafe, you are putting them in a position that they don't want to be in, and that over time is abuse."

He eventually admitted that maybe it is abuse. It took a long time tho. We talked a lot, yelled a lot more and got mad a lot more, for a long time.

It was amazing, sometimes scary. Definitely I wanted cigarettes, but I didn't. I chiewed nic gum.

hit a rough patch, but still holding strong

i’ve been smoke-free for 3 weeks now, but this week has been a struggle. cravings hit me out of nowhere, and stress made it worse. i’m honestly surprised at how much i still think about it. but i keep reminding myself why i quit in the first place, and that helps a bit. if you're feeling the same, just know you’re not alone. let's keep pushing through together!

18 days smoke-free. Turns out quitting has been 27 small decisions, not one big one.

Im 23 and currently on day 18.

I used to think quitting was one big decision. So far, it has felt more like making that same decision again every time a craving shows up.

Ive had 27 moments where I seriously wanted to smoke but didnt. The cravings still come, but they also pass. Seeing that progress and the estimated €258 saved makes this finally feel real.

I’m still early in the journey, but Im proud of making it this far. Im curious, what was the first situation you genuinely thought you couldnt handle without a cigarette, but eventually did?

smoking to avoid eating

hi everyone, i’m going through big life changes and the natural progression of things is that i finally quit smoking.
i started smoking when i was around 19 and i’m now 28, it only got heavy in the last 5 years or so and i’d never considered quitting before. i really don’t want to hit the 10 year mark so it has to stop now.
my problem is, i started smoking because cigarettes taste disgusting and it quells hunger for a bit, which is the same reason i’ve been unable to stop since i started.
i’ve been reducing since the start of 2026 but it gets bad still when i’m especially hungry. i know it’s a pretty common phenomenon that people who stop smoking tend to overeat because of the oral fixation (which might be solved with something like adult chew toys or gum?) and i’m terrified it might happen to me.
another reason why i haven’t managed to quit is because having a cigarette gives me the feeling of having a break in between things (freelancer working from home), which is a feeling i have no idea how to recreate.
i’ll be joining a gym in september as part of the bigger changes i’m implementing in my life, which means i’ll be out of the house without cigarettes for a couple hours several days a week (i don’t bring them with me unless i’m out clubbing or eating out), which is going to help, surely.
if anyone has any experience/suggestions on how to avoid overeating when quitting i’d be forever grateful, especially if anyone has managed to maintain/lose weight while quitting!

I'm hoping I have 'just' asthma

36 m - smoked (mainly spliffs) weed / tobacco for 20 years.

I quit in november due to surgery coming up. I literally lost my mind during quitting, my mental health has been on a rollercoaster. Had a few relapses, mostly vaping.

Last week I had to take a spirometry, which was not good to say the least. I'm hoping I have 'just' asthma, since I remember even before ever smoking I couldn't stand running because of how bad it would hurt my lungs. (although skateboarding and cycling wasn't a problem but when doing high intensity cardio I feel like I'm dying)

I've quit for 2-3 weeks again now since my last vaping relapse and am back in the coughing up process, so maybe that had something to with it.

They're having me do a full lung test next month and they made an urgent appointment for that, so I'm slightly worried. I do have great blood results apart from a bit low hemoglobine levels. 10y ago I performed badly on a spirometry test as well and when I did a cardio cycling test for a job, my oxygen levels were too low. (which I blamed the Tramadol i used to stand the knee pain from the heavy cycling lol)

Well, I know I have myself to thank for it if I end up already having COPD or emphysema.

I miss smoke breaks more than I miss the cigarettes themselves

At work, I'd get up to take a smoke break and no one would bat an eye at me. But now that I'm trying to quit, if I take a break in which I also don't do anything productive, but instead of smoking I just go watch the street for 5 minutes in order to still get that mental reset, I can see everyone giving me a weird look.

Smoke breaks are somehow fine, but regular breaks are a sign of me slacking off?

Been cigarette-free for a month or so -- HUGE energy boost

I'm a 26 year old male, been smoking a pack or so since I was 16. I just switched to nicotine replacement tools a month ago (I use a variety, gum, spray, lozenge) and picked up some snus in case I have a few drinks and really crave a cigarette. I quit cigarettes using a vape a year ago, but my lungs didn't feel any better so I went back to cigs.

I still crave nicotine (and use it), but the way my body feels is simply incredible.

I never realized how terrible cigarettes made me feel. I used to think that I was just not made for running. Now it's really no problem at all. It feels like my lung capacity literally doubled.

So to anyone struggling with it, don't be hesitant to take up NRT or smokeless tobacco or anything that will help you stop inhaling smoke. It really is worth it. I dont know if this fits the subreddit rules, as there is still nicotine usage, but I feel like the health benefits of SIMPLY NOT INHALING SMOKE is amazing. I really had no idea.

Got Desmoxan. Can’t swallow pills.

I’m such a wuss I know. I ordered Desmoxan and have been so excited to start it but I cannot for the life of me get the dang pill down. It’s ridiculous. It’s such a small pill. Really wish it could be crushed up. I don’t know why I’m even posting. I guess just to vent. I’m going to keep trying. I really want this.

Am I the only one?

I can't quit nicotine chewing gums. I really can't. I got addicted to it 4 years ago, when my type of chewing gum was a bit cheaper (6 USD instead of 8 USD for a pack of 24). I use, at least, 12 nicotine chewing gums a day, but normally, around 15-18.
