Advice New rescue started hiding

Upvotes

Okay I have had my lab mix for 60 days now! I love her so much. She initially chose the couch as her safe space, which was great because that is basically where we all hang out at home. A week or so ago she started becoming more curious - she finally went into the kitchen - it took over a month for her to even venture into the kitchen, and I am thrilled she finally felt safe enough to come in! The other day, she was in my daughter's room with us and she crawled under the bed. Ever since then, she wants to be under there near constantly..

I don't see any health issues, she eats (under there lol) normally and nothing has changed from the routine. I just mostly feel bad like is she comfortable under there??? Should I just leave her be? So far I just let her be there since she wasn't harming anything but she will lay under the bed for hours. Never had a dog hide like that, and I guess I would expect it in the initial couple weeks vs two months after being here? .. any thoughts are welcome

Rescue Success! From Zadar to Sweden! Meet Rasko, Ricky, and Honey – my 3 rescue pups enjoying their very first camper trip! 🐾🌲

Post image
3 Upvotes

I adopted all three of my sweet dogs through the German rescue organization Einsame Pfoten Zadar e.V. (originally from Zadar, Croatia, now living with me in Germany).

The two brothers in the front, Ricky and Rasko, are from the very same litter and turned 3 years old on March 2nd, 2025. That exact day was extra special because it was the day Ricky was officially handed over to me!

Honey (in the back) turned 3 in December 2024 and joined my pack in February 2025 – she's pretty much the mom-in-training for the boys.

This picture was taken during my road trip in Sweden last year. It was their very first big adventure in my camper van, and they absolutely loved the woods! So grateful to have them in my life. ❤️

🚨POPPY #A2257789 - CLEARED FOR EUTHANASIA NEEDS TO EXIT THE SHELTER 7/23🚨💔 SHE HAS 2 DAYS TO LEAVE THE SHELTER🚨

Spayed Female, Brown and Black Brindle Akita
Shelter: EAST VALLEY Age: 8 YRS Weight: 67 LBS

Poppy (about 8 years old) is the kind of dog who quietly steals your heart.

She’s independent, gentle, and happiest doing her own thing-whether that’s sniffing every corner of a new place, enjoying a long walk, or settling in for one of her championship naps.

She loves being brushed, rides beautifully in the car, and takes her time savoring a good meal (especially if there’s meat involved!).

She can be a little shy at first, but once she settles in, she’s a calm, sweet companion. She was small dog tested and did well.

Poppy is available for adoption or foster at the East Valley Animal Shelter.

Please share to help this lovely girl find the peaceful home she deserves.

Advice How to register a dog?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey guys thanks for reading my post in advance. I need advice on registering a dog to my name. Here’s the brief story:

My husband‘s friend bred her and sold her to some guy. The guy kept her in a crate for months until he reach back to my husband’s friend to give her up. Some days later, my husband’s friend has to leave his stay at home wife, children and five other animals alone. So she made the decision to rehome some of the animals.

My husband begged me for a week for us to take her in and said to me that she’s already litter trained. Eventually, I told him I am not okay with it but if he says yes then it’s his responsibility, especially since I’ve never had or been around dogs.

Come forward a month later, I’ve been the one to do everything. She wasn’t litter trained, and she got mange. I found out what she went through two weeks later. I was the one who made the vet appointment after a week of my husband trying different home remedies and clearly was making her worse. I spent $700 within the first two weeks making sure her needs are met. Right now, I’m the one waking up an extra hour earlier to give her a load of meds from other problems and taking her outside. After my husband seeing the reality of her situation, he has become disillusioned about having a fun little buddy around.

Anyway my husband’s friends came back, and was upset his wife gave her away because he wanted to keep her around so that he can breed her, so he won’t give us her papers. On other, words we’re housing a dog until he can get her pregnant and make all the money and not have to take care of her and my husband is OK with that. I have a feeling he’ll just claim the dog on taxes which he has done so before.

Anyways, with all that being said, she hasn’t had a bathroom incident inside the home since last week. Her skin is looking much better and pretty much she’s always by my side when both me and my husband are in the same room.

Today I asked my husband one more time what happened with her paperwork and he got really upset and gave me an attitude. I explained my reasoning, but it seems like he just doesn’t want any trouble with his friend so he’s just choosing to ignore me. I admit that I’ve already been thinking of divorcing my husband and I am saving money (which is why I was able to drop all that money on the dog) but now I feel like she has to come with me despite their agreement.

I don’t care if his friend involves the police. Just want some paperwork from my end.

CW: Euthanasia Update on our shut-down rescue: the decompression routine is finally clicking and my sanity is back

A few weeks ago I asked for help because our new rescue came home totally shut down and spooked by basically everything - doorways, the leash clip, any sudden noise. I wanted to share an update because the advice here stopped me from doing way too much too soon.

We stuck to a very boring routine: same potty spot, same times, quiet walks that were more sniffing than moving, and no meet-and-greets. I stopped trying to coax him out with a bunch of baby talk and just hung out nearby with low expectations. Biggest change was treating meals like enrichment instead of a pressure moment: scattering kibble in the yard, tossing slow treats away from me, and letting him decide if he wanted to come closer.

Week one he barely ate and would freeze if the harness came out. Week two he started taking treats from my hand, but only if I looked away. Now, at week four, he brings me his leash in the morning, gives a little stretch and wag when I say good morning, and has even started offering sits on his own. He still jumps at knocks and is not ready for strangers, but his recovery time after a scare is much faster.

One surprise: once he felt safer, he started mouthing more. Not aggressive, just over-excited, puppy-style grabbing. Managing arousal with extra naps, shorter sessions, and more chew options helped a lot.

Random aside, I had also been keeping a few notes from CoveredCritters around, https://coveredcritters.com, mostly so I would not overthink every little behavior change.

If anyone else is dealing with that early shutdown stage, I'm curious: what was the first sign your dog was actually decompressing instead of just tolerating you?
