Context of the decision: I am primarily looking for low and slow cooking, I already have a Weber kettle and Blackstone griddle. I have a Pro 575 which has served me well for five plus years, but it is at the in-laws now and will be staying there, so this will be a replacement for that device.
Prices (discounts included):
- Traeger Timberline 850 (Gen 1): $810
- Weber Searwood 600: $900
The wild card: I am in South Dakota where the wind blows a lot and I like to smoke outdoors all winter long. It seems the Timberline made have better insulation than the Searwood to better handle the cold and wind.
I am leaning towards the Searwood because it appears cleanup would be easier and the folks at AmazingRibs seem very high on the Searwood (although they liked the Timberline as well). right now the only thing intriguing about the expanded capabilities of the Searwood is that I enjoy a steak cooked over wood more than charcoal. I'm intrigued by the rotisseries option, but beyond the usual smoked meats the only big item I cook every year is the Thanksgiving Turkey which I have spatchcocked on my Pro 575 for the last couple of years, roasted whole before that. The Timberline feels like it was a big step in the right direction when it released, but still wasn't quite there and won't be quite as refined as the Searwood for cleanup, grease management, smoke levels, etc. Either way it seems there is not a bad choice to be made here, and I am in the paralysis by analysis phase of the decision making process. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi r/pelletgrills, you're my only hope!
