I Have a Question / I need Help I want to get into MTG

Upvotes

Hello any help would be appreciated I’ve been thinking of getting into magic but not sure where to start. I’m not sure what decks to buy or what’s good for competitive play. I’ve seen some stuff coming out with stardew and hatsune miku which looks like fun and the tmnt cards but I’m unsure what to pick up? Any suggestions?

Commander / EDH I’m looking for a new commander deck box

Upvotes

I already have one, but it only holds two decks. So I was wanting to upgrade, but is there a prefers brand or style? Are there certain websites that would be a better place to shop than amazon, and/or should I shop in person for deck boxes?

I can’t find one like it at all on line. Similar ones seem to go for $40+. It is still sealed. The packaging is starting to split and that is why there is tape on it but it is sealed.

Discussion When is it too late to counterspell?

Upvotes

So recently I was playing in a pretty casual pod with a friend who was just getting into magic. There was five people, so there was some free time between turns, and my friend asked for some advice on his hand, and what he should try to do. I talked with him a bit, and during this time, player number three in the turn order cast a spell and removed my Sol Ring. He then played another card, I noticed, realised I was missing my Sol Ring, asked why. I was a bit miffed about it, especially as I had a counterspell in hand. Other played said it’s too late, and honestly I didn’t mind too much as it was a casual game, and it was pretty late game now and I had stronger cards that hadn’t been removed (and I still won the game). I understand that I should have been paying attention to the game, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth.

Anyways, I want to discuss how long people should have for a counterspell before it’s too late, and good practices around it so I can make sure my friends have a good time and other people don’t feel miffed about it the same way I did.

I Have a Question / I need Help New to collecting, does MTG not care their actual Amazon store ships items improperly?

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

I bought two of the Marvel Superheroes Gift Bundles directly from the official MTG Store on Amazon thinking that they would be the safest option for buying on Amazon.

Their FBA listings are not configured properly though and Amazon shipped the items in brown paper bags and both bundles arrived damaged. You can set shipping requirements on a per product basis when adding items to FBA, or at least you could previously when I worked with several clients selling there.

Chalking this up as a learning experience sadly but I am surprised that the storefront owned by MTG seems to not be paying attention to this issue. Since the product literally just came out I am now seeing reviews that have been posted after I made my own purchase saying the same thing. Item arrived late and damaged because it was shipped in a paper bag instead of an actual box.

I guess I am just going to open both of them, or what do you all suggest? Is it worth keeping one sealed even with the damage to the box?

I Have a Question / I need Help How to collect new marvel set

Upvotes

Hello everyone! I will just be up front and say that I am completely new to magic the gathering, I've never bought cards before, and have not played the game before. Not that I wouldn't be interested in playing the game, but I am especially interested in maybe starting to collect the new marvel set that came out. But I am very new to all of this and it seems a little overwhelming for me already. I see all these different box sets, I don't really know what's worth collecting or buying. I will say I am mostly interested just for the collecting aspect, I may try to learn to play at some point. If I can get any advice on what I should be buying to get the most out of collecting cards from this set, I would sincerely appreciate it.

Discussion Etiquette re: Mana Rocks

Upvotes

A little pretext. I was playing EDH recently and on turn two opponent to my left dropped a sol ring, me untapped was having none of that and killed it.
Player got pissed and scooped saying it was rude to target rocks.
I have never heard that before. I don’t usually play land removal, but rocks and dorks (llanowar elves, etc) have always been fair targets.
Am I wrong, AITAH??

So couldnt find my traps, so had ti cal in an arcane teachings. So have Hulk equiped and move to combat, as hulk is attacking trigger the enchant targeting hulk. Granted that hulk either has vigilance or able to burn, untap etc. Then this procsess can be repeated iver qnd over until the big man is infinite swing for leathal fist combat and nkt have to wait for all the rest? Happen to pull this in a pod of six using a twiddle to untap hulk and went to town.

Good evening. I’d like to build a Commander deck—around Bracket 3—using her as the commander. I was wondering if you have any advice or suggestions on which cards are absolutely essential for a deck with this commander. Thanks a lot.

I Have a Question / I need Help Lgs pricing issue

Upvotes

I just picked up my order for a decklist from an lgs that’s usually a little pricey with singles but I thought it was fine. The list I emailed was listed as 180 on moxfield using mana pool. Using tcgplayer it was listed as 220. I went to checkout on mana pool and the total was 227 after tax and shipping and on tcgplayer it was about 267 after tax and shipping. In my email to the store I asked for the exact printings listed and for a price. They did not respond with a price and told me 8 cards were missing. I went in today to pick everything up and the guy told me it totaled up to 313. I looked at the card machine and the total was 363.96. I asked why and he said taxes and said if I pay in cash it would only be 313. I don’t know why I wasn’t thinking but I just paid and went to my car. I looked at the receipt and there was a charge for 313 and a charge for 24 then 8% tax on top of all that. The cards im missing total up to 35 on tcgplayer. I didn’t wanna seem stingy and ask for the price on every card but I have no idea where he got that price from. I wanna support local shops but I can’t help but feel like I was ripped off. I wanna call and ask where the 24 dollar charge came from or maybe go in and ask but I’m not much of a confrontational person. I know it’s my fault for not being more careful and asking questions. At the end of the day I pulled my card out and paid but I wanna know what other people think.

Discussion Is mono white as bad what im reading?

I am very new to the game and kinda lean into loving mono white. Is there any viable strategy I can use to win without paying more than 100 per deck. I am also interested in white green pairings. Looking for strategy and commanders I guess around $100 per deck max

I Have a Question / I need Help Why cast spells in 2nd Main Phase?

I’m a VERY casual player and have been playing for years but have just heard that I should cast spells in my 2nd main phase more often than my first. Why is this?

I was told, but failed understand, that the spells can be applied after combat.

Meaning 1, I declare attackers and one creature is swinging for 5 damage. My opponent does not choose to block, so in my 2nd main phase I play an instant to give that creature double strike making my opponent take 10 damage.

Meaning 2, I could swing for 5 in combat (opponent may take the hit to go to 3 health) and do lightning bolt for 3 in my 2nd main phase.

I see the validity of number 2 but can’t understand how number 1 could happen. Can anyone help me understand?

EDIT: There are so many unbelievably helpful comments that are going to fundamentally change the way I play the game. I can’t possibly respond to all of them in a timely manner, so thank you all very much!

I Have a Question / I need Help Help, I can’t figure out how to beat my husband - Sephiroth v. Cloud decks

My husband kept buying Final Fantasy cards just to own them, but now we’ve accidentally gotten really into playing Magic.

I play the Sephiroth deck and he plays the Cloud deck, and he keeps winning. I’m usually better at card and strategy games than him, so it annoys me to no end.

Often, I end up with a hand of cards I dont have enough mana to play and he ends up winning before I can play the good cards because he always gets a million land cards and consequently beefs up his cards.

Do you have any tips on strategy for playing with the Sephiroth deck?

Or do you have any tips on cards to change around in my deck?

Thank you in advance, magic gatherers! Let’s beat my husband to a pulp together.

Edit: I mean those basic starter decks. We haven’t made any changes to them at all. We just learned the rules recently, so we are not brave enough to make changes yet.

2nd edit: I’m sorry I’ve stopped replying. You guys are giving me amazing advice and I’m happily overwhelmed! It’s getting late, but tomorrow I will sit down a device a new strategy to beat him. You guys are being so sweet to me despite my lacking knowledge. Thank you!

I Have a Question / I need Help Any modern meta decks that feature Solitude, Endurance, and/or Subtlety?

Hi everyone, I’m new to modern and I don’t know how to build it or what is considered good due to me almost exclusively playing commander. Those three elemental incarnations (especially solitude) are awesome and I want to run a deck that has one or more of them within it but that is still meta (control if preferable but I’m not picky). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! ^^
