The amount of NIMBY Hong supporters around St. Francis is befuddling.

Drove through St. Francis today for the first time in a month or so and saw a ton of houses with both Hong signs and anti-apartment construction signs; seems bizarre to support both the most left-wing candidate in the gubernatorial primary then also endorse a deeply conservative ideology like NIMBYism.

Especially since Hong is focusing her campaign on affordability. Housing would be a lot more affordable if we could build apartments everywhere & not have it take several years of city council review in order to do so.

Saving money and embracing non-high end services. Hair, skin, etc.

Coming to a realization as I get older that fancy salons and spas aren’t in the budget anymore… owning a duplex means saving for plumbing repairs, waterproofing etc for is more important for practical purposes and peace of mind than a boujee full set.

Self-care junkies… can you refer places & people (specifically) for a haircut (most importantly) and other self-care services?

Feel free to recommend other ways to feel indulgent but also stay frugal.

What are your secret meal deal spots?

I don’t think I’ve done to a cost cutters since I was in my teens and it’s a goood time to put my ego to the side and accept growing up is about making better choices.

Ty

Edit: I guess recommendations for plumbers, electricians, life advice etc are valued, too. Laughing but also crying.

Fixture Pizza - has the recipe changed

Used to rave about Fixture pizza. Would keep eating till I was in physical pain from being so full because every bite felt worth it to me.

Went today.. extremely disappointed. Did they change the crust recipe or what? Anyone feel similar since being back after the reopening?

Just wondering if just an off night and worth going back..

FIXTURE WINGS MARKED SAFE. STILL GOOD ASL.

Visiting family, let us know some can’t miss spots that aren’t high end fancy places.

We have already been to the Arby’s on Miller Pkwy twice(got the meats). Any suggestions for hidden gems would be appreciated. Been to Zaffiro’s, a couple of supper clubs, and Kopp’s, so any Midwest classics would be appreciated.

Side note, I love this city. Been coming for years with my wife to visit family and has always been friendly, accepting, and incredibly fun. Thank you Milwaukee.

At home hibachi chef recs

I’m planning a bachelorette and one of the activities we want to do is have one of those cool hibachi chefs come for dinner one night.

I’ve been looking and inquiring with some places to see what it costs but it seems like every place I’ve found so far isn’t in the Milwaukee area so they charge like a $150 travel fee on top of everything.

Curious if anyone has run into this same thing and if there are any more local alternatives that don’t have those travel fees.

Thanks in advance :)

Help Me! OPEN CALL: Seeking short films by AAPI filmmakers (Paid screening opportunity at Cactus Club here in MKE!)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm currently an artist in residence at Cactus Club through their in-person artist residency program, In the Clouds. Part of this residency is producing/organizing a community event, of which I've decided to organize a screening event featuring short films by Asian-American filmmakers.

I need your help to make this screening successful by submitting to my open call, which can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScLc7CfAnXRjzFaEfoDgC30z_BwVrSlYZkzJZi7V1ee2eMzeQ/viewform

Here are some quick details about the submission form:

DEADLINE: August 3rd @ 11:59PM CST

Film(s) submitted must be less than 30 minutes in length

Paid opportunity: $250 will be split between accepted filmmakers

If you have Asian heritage (South, West, North, East... all the little overlaps in between, and mixed) you are welcome to share your work.

There is no narrative restriction: I really want to emphasize that there are a diversity of narratives to be shared from the Asian-American community.

The form itself has some more information about the artist residency, along with my contact information if you have any inquiries. I encourage you to share this with the people in your life who might be interested in submitting.

Some other stuff that just contextualizes this open call:

This follows a stint of organizing screenings locally, but I kept thinking to myself about the ways in which I can better support my Asian-American creative community. I am Filipino-American myself, and to me, practicing this community engagement is critical to practicing kapwa, or togetherness.

If you don't have a short film to submit but have any suggestions of where else I can post this call, don't be a stranger and let me know. Thanks for taking the time to read this post! :)

Neurofeedback?

I’ve googled but unsure if I’m googling the correct thing as only one place popped up, and I thought it was more common?
I was referred by a practitioner out of state to try neurofeedback with a brain scan for ADHD and OCD. Has anyone had any experience with that in MKE or the surrounding areas? Any recommendations?

Foster to Adopt Cats around MKE

My partner and I currently have a cat. For a while now we’ve talked about getting her a sibling but want to go about it the right way. She can be sometimes feisty but is super loving and very playful. We were thinking a foster to adoption might be the best option to find a good sibling that works well with her and our home. Don’t want any kitty feeling unsafe or unhappy lol. Anyways, does anyone know of shelters or rescues that offer foster to adoption for cats? I know it’s not unheard of at all, but it’s hard to find out info when they don’t display it on their websites. Thanks!!!

Help Me! Lost wallet!

Hi there, I know this is a very long shot, but I'm hoping that someone here might have come across my wallet?

My best guess as to the last time that it was on my person is as I headed downtown on Thursday, the 16th of July, from the eastbound 18 bus line at like 10:30am, but honestly everything is a blur from the 11th to the 17th -- I use Apple Pay for most of my daily transactions.

It's a black Tommy Hilfiger bifold wallet with my ID (learner's permit) and a couple of debit cards and my library card in it. I had the foresight to lock the cards, and there's hardly any cash inside at all, so I'm currently more worried about having my ID and wallet proper, as ID is a necessity and the wallet carries sentimental value.

I've already called MCTS and every other business I've frequented in the past ten or so days to see if they had anything, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask here as well. If anyone happened to find it or knows who did, feel free to send me a DM. Any aid or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When to call for parking enforcement to tow a parked car?

Hi all,

I normally wouldn't care because it is on the public road and not bothering us but there is a car with no license plates that has been sitting in front of the house for probably a week now. I'm willing to wait maybe until Monday or am I waiting too long at this point?

Edit: Compliant sent.

Edit 2: Car got towed.

Milwaukee woman charged in alleged rental scam targeting families searching for housing - WTMJ

MILWAUKEE — A woman from Milwaukee is facing multiple felony charges after prosecutors allege she orchestrated a rental scam that targeted families desperately searching for a place to live, convincing victims to hand over thousands of dollars for a home they never legally controlled.

29-year-old Yasmin Hameed is charged with felony theft by fraud, forgery, and multiple counts of bail jumping in connection with an alleged scheme involving a home near N. 69th Street and W. Melvina Street.

House involved in Milwaukee rental scam in 2026.

House involved in Milwaukee rental scam in 2026.

According to the criminal complaint obtained by 620 WTMJ, prosecutors allege the rental scheme operated between March 27 and May 2, 2026, where Hameed used online rental listings to lure prospective tenants into paying deposits for a single-family home they believed was available.

Criminal Complaint – Hameed, Yasmin HalimahDownload

Investigators spoke with several victims including Milwaukee mothers Jataun Morgan and Sierra Winters came forward publicly, sharing nearly identical stories of losing their savings while trying to secure housing for their families.

A house that looked legitimate

Morgan said her search began on March 27, when she applied through Zillow for a three-bedroom home on Milwaukee’s northwest side.

Within about an hour, she received a message from someone identifying himself as “Quincy Jones,” claiming she had been approved. She was then directed to contact a woman identifying herself as “Tasha Jones,” who said she would personally show the property. “Tasha” was later identified as Yasmin Hameed.

When Morgan arrived, she said nothing immediately raised suspicion: the home looked lived in; furniture filled the living room; the children’s bedrooms remained set up; boxes suggested someone was preparing to move.

“Tasha” explained that the current tenant would soon be moving, and Morgan could move in afterward.

Morgan toured the house more than once. She received receipts. She reviewed a lease agreement. She said the couple appeared compassionate after learning about her personal circumstances, and assured her they wanted to help.

Believing everything was legitimate, Morgan purchased three money orders totaling $2,800 and turned them over.

According to the criminal complaint, investigators allege Morgan provided those money orders after being told she had secured the rental. Soon afterward, Morgan was contacted again, and told the owners no longer accepted money orders and preferred cash instead.

That request raised Morgan’s suspicions.

The investigation begins

Morgan began researching the property herself. She contacted the City of Milwaukee and eventually learned the home was not owned by the people claiming to rent it.

Instead, investigators later confirmed the property was owned by VB One LLC and managed by Evergreen Live.

Morgan contacted police and arranged another meeting with the people she believed had taken her money.

The criminal complaint showed that Morgan reported seeing the man identifying himself as “Quincy Jones” display a handgun before leaving the area.

She tracked money orders, collected receipts, emails, screenshots and photographs, searched public records, and shared information with investigators as she tried to identify the people involved.

Copies of money orders allegedly sent to “Quincy and Tasha Jones”.

Another mother falls into the same trap

Just days later, another Milwaukee mother Sierra Winters unknowingly walked into what prosecutors now allege was the same scheme.

Winters also found the property listed online, toured the same house, and met the same woman identifying herself as “Tasha Jones.”

She was also told she had been approved, and paid $1,400 toward the rental. Winters later met a woman identifying herself as “Monica B” to receive what she believed were the keys to her new home, that were presented inside a small gift bag.

Alleged key to the home involved in the rental scam.

Alleged key to the home involved in the rental scam.

Court documents showed that Winters later paid an additional $750 before moving into the residence.

For less than 24 hours, Winters believed she finally had a home. She FaceTimed family members, she thanked God, she believed one of the most stressful chapters of her life had finally come to an end.

The next day, after returning home from work, the locks had been changed, and the keys no longer worked.

Winters repeatedly called and texted but never received another response.

Multiple victims, similar stories

The criminal complaint shows investigators eventually identified additional victims who described nearly identical experiences involving the same property.

According to prosecutors, victims were instructed to:

Apply through Zillow.

Tour the same home.

Communicate with people identifying themselves as “Quincy Jones” and “Tasha Jones.”

Provide identification and proof of income.

Pay deposits.

Receive receipts or incomplete lease paperwork.

Never legally obtain possession of the property.

Investigators allege four separate victim groups lost money during the scheme.

Building the case

Long before criminal charges were filed, Morgan and Winters spent weeks gathering evidence.

They compared text messages, tracked money orders, collected surveillance photographs, matched identities, and identified people they believed were involved. They even encouraged additional victims to come forward.

Morgan later visited the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office for an update on the investigation.

During that visit, Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Krueger told Morgan the case remained under investigation, and that additional evidence from Milwaukee police would be reviewed before charging decisions were made.

As the investigation continued, Morgan stayed in contact with investigators, continuing to provide information she uncovered. She later received a letter from a Milwaukee police officer thanking her for assisting in the investigation.

Suspect now in custody

Court records show Yasmin Hameed was arrested on July 16, and faces felony theft-false representation greater than $2500-$5000, four counts of bail jumping, and forgery. She’s also charged with three counts of misdemeanor theft-false representation less than or equal to $2500.

Prosecutors also allege the offenses occurred while Hameed was already out on bond in two separate felony cases, which includes armed robbery and financial fraud.

Hameed made her initial appearance in court on July 16, and pled not guilty to all the misdemeanor charges. Cash bond was set at $15,000, and she’s due back in court for a preliminary hearing on August 6.

The investigation continues

For Morgan, learning Hameed has been arrested and charged was an emotional moment after months of gathering evidence.

“It makes me feel a little bit better and secure, like I’m being heard,” Morgan said. “She’s not convicted yet, but seeing the charges makes me feel like we’re getting a little further.”

Morgan described the investigation as exhausting. “It was very stressful. Very, very stressful.”

Both moms joined WTMJ’s Tory Lowe while he still hosted a radio show on 101.7 the Truth about the situation.

Despite losing $2,800, Morgan said she continued gathering documents, tracking money orders, and providing information to investigators because she believed other families could still be victimized.

“I had to put a lot of faith in myself and stay level-headed. I knew I had to get justice for myself and the others. Now that she’s charged, hopefully she’s convicted and it can come to an end.”
