Grief is so hard.

Upvotes

Tomorrow is her birthday and I have felt a bit hesitant but generally okay all week. And then suddenly I’m sitting here sobbing and cancelling all of my plans. I just miss her ❤️ grief is hard, birthdays are hard, milestones are hard, life is hard. It’s all feels so hard without them in moments like this. I know it’ll pass and soon I’ll be able to grieve with some amount of joy while remembering her but damn, those waves sure are strong.

Any “black sheep” here who were excluded from a loved one’s funeral?

I feel weird writing this but I need some advice. This is some delayed processing on my end but I really need support. In September 2023, my husband (now my ex husband) left me on a random Friday. He unilaterally initiated a divorce process and moved to an apartment he’d secured for himself … down the street. For some context, he’s Australian and I was his immigration sponsor, and a few days after he left, his green card arrived. The timing was super weird. I was heartbroken and pretty numb; we’d had arguments about his mother, who had been very abusive to him and me. Before he left me, he was wavering between getting trauma support for his childhood trauma, vs literally yelling at me that I’m the problem, “not his mom.”

Four months later, in Jan. 2024, his mother suddenly and randomly (literally completely out of the blue) was diagnosed with cancer and died ten days later. We weren’t even halfway into the divorce process; I’d known her and loved her for ten years. She often raged at me when we visited for “keeping her son in America” and I always tried to extremely thoughtful and compassionate toward her. My ex admitted to a couples counselor that his mom was “the family bully.” Our final visit to Australia was awful; I was hospitalized for Covid and she was so angry that I was sick that she stared going through my social media trying to find things to start fights over. So, I temporarily unfriended her; she was outraged and my ex husband wouldn’t do anything to say like “hey let’s cool down,” it was very hard.

Basically I became the “bad object” in the family and my ex husband not only excluded me from any of the information about her death but also the funeral and obituary. The exclusion was so noticeable and hostile that friends of his parents reached out to me to say that they knew how much I loved her and that they were sorry to see the family treating me that way.

My own family of origin and friends were super dismissive as well; they said “she was horrible, f her, don’t shed a tear over her, just move on. Good riddance.” I was in a weird double-shock from adjusting to life without my husband, and then her sudden death. To this day no one has told me what happened and what things were like. I almost feel my ex husband blamed me for her death, which I know is unfair - he blamed me for a lot of his family dynamics and was veering back and forth trying to figure out what he needed. I’ve read that a lot of dysfunctional families will pin blame on the most “outsider” person, especially a woman (and especially if said woman has rocked the boat, which I did by unfriending her - though it was never meant to be permanent and I was trying to prevent her from starting conflict and combing through my personal info).

I feel immense regret. Like maybe I should’ve called the funeral director. Maybe I still can? Would I email them? I feel I don’t have a right to talk to my ex husband’s family though some have been very kind to me, like his sister. I’m supposed at how some of my friends have responded especially over time - saying stuff like “well he lost his mom.” I was like “I lost my mother in law; I wasn’t some random girlfriend or something. I called her Mum. I was literally triangulated into almost every conflict and he used me as a shield. I feel really horrible and alone.” Folks just say “yeah it sucks, he had issues with his mom that he took out on you.”

Where do I turn?

Grief is a splinter

Grief is a splinter.

Suppurating subcutaneously.

Inundated by what used to be

and what could’ve been.

Submerged in scar and once-soft sinew.

Sleeping softly,

silently, sometimes—

But it’s always there,

begging to be bumped into,

Startling sorrow from its sullen

slumber.

Quote Help: Looking for quotes about losing a loved one.

Preferably one that relates to playing cards, she was an older woman who played cards/dice all the time with her sisters, and we lost her suddenly. I am trying to make something for my Granny, one of her sisters, and need help with a quote that pertains to the thing they all loved to do the most, spend time together and play cards/dice. Thank you!

Lost my dad 9 years ago today

Today marks 9 years since my dad died from cancer. I noticed that around 4 years after he passed people stopped checking in on me, on birthdays (his mainly), holidays and the death anniversary. I was just wondering if this is something other people have dealt with? I don’t expect people to check on me all the time and I check on others. I also understand moving on with your life but it’s still kinda sad.

My childhood friend since 16 died four years ago. I am now 27.

The last time we spoke was in 2021. I was in a negative space, just like I am today. His last message to me was asking how I was doing, and I told him that I was at work and asked what was up. He said he was just seeing how I was doing and what time I would get off work. In response, I told him the time I get off and that I'm just feeling lonely. I told him I wanted nothing more than to hang out with a girl and my friends from time to time. He checked the message but never responded. On my other Facebook account, the last time we spoke was in 2022. Still in a negative space, I let him know that I finally got a car. I wished him a happy birthday on November 22, 2022. It was his twenty-fourth birthday. He was a month older than me. Then, finally, the last message I sent him was a song that I made. I've sent him two messages since then, pretty much asking him to watch over me from heaven and to pray for me up there. I think about him from time to time. I never thought that I'd lose my friend the way I did. I moved away and we couldn't really properly connect. So I actually didn't get to see him for years. But we stayed in contact as much as we could. We could have done better. My friend died the worst way possible: shot in the back of the head in front of his kid and his girlfriend. He was med-flighted; he was DOA at the hospital. I regret to this day not speaking to him more. He was my best friend. I have so many fond memories of him, from going out and walking the city at night to smoking resin while walking down the street in Roanoke, VA, long before marijuana was legal and long before we were of age. I met him at 16; I'm now 27. When I think about it, I still cry, just like I am now writing this post.

I never thought that something that happened years ago would still affect me today.

I just wanna say I miss you, Matthew. You were my brother, you were my best friend 😥

Giving up on love

Personally it's been nearly three years since my last relationship. Im tired. I've started listening to my head more than my heart. I've learned how to survive in the real world and take care of myself more than anything. It's hard when you want to be happy but circumstances have really made you place a guard on yourself.

If anyone has any advice that would be much appreciated.

Lost my dad March 11,2026

The days seem to be flying. I'll be 26 in 7 months. I miss you dad. Nothing's been the same since you left. Some days are tolerable I go to work, come home and go to sleep. Other days I just wanna crawl inside the casket next to you,go to sleep and not wake up. I've had my heart broken twice since you left. The thing that has been keeping me going is the cardinals I see, remembering the sound of you feeding the chickens and dogs every morning, the sound of your laugh...every little detail I try to remember. Till we meet again I'll keep trying to survive for you.

My mom passed away on my birthday

My mom died on my 39th birthday. The last words she ever spoke was happy birthday, I love you. My 40th birthday is rapidly approaching, and I overheard her talking to my dad about planning a surprise party for it. The thought of putting on a happy face and pretend that im not still hurting is too much to handle at times.

Trigger Warning Lost Dad July 2nd-Still Doesn't Feel Quite Real Yet All the Time

We lost my father on July 2nd, and it's just now starting to hit me that he's really gone and not coming home. It feels like he's on a business trip and will be coming home, and every night I have a dream with him in it (sometimes a nightmare, sometimes he's just in a normal dream), and when I wake up from the dream, I go through the "he's not coming home alive" thought, and get sad again.

He was in the hospital for 18 days with pneumonia (and was sick prior to going in the hospital, but refused to go to the hospital), and luckily all of my siblings and mom were there when we put him on hospice and he passed.

It was especially hard because he had emergency surgery about a week before he passed, and my siblings came home because the surgeon was positive he would be on a ventilator for at least a day, but could be up to a month. However, the surgery went fantastic, he did really well for a day and a half, was never put on a ventilator, and started coughing up the crap in his lungs (which was what the surgeon wanted). My siblings went home, and had to come back a few days later because he went downhill so fast. We were so sure he would get better after the surgery that it was almost cruel that he didn't.

The grief comes and goes still. Nights are really hard, and I am talking to a therapist, who says grief isn't linear, and little thoughts and memories will trigger sadness. I just want my brain to register his passing, even though I was there when he passed. If anyone has any tips on books, diaries, etc. that can help me through this, I would be grateful. I have a feeling after we have his memorial in August it may feel more consistently real, but I don't know. I want him and his humor back so bad...luckily we have great memories of him, which helps.

Sorry for the long post...my brain isn't working great lately and I'm not getting restful sleep, so things are foggy.

There Is No Funeral. No Goodbye That Everyone Understands.

Grieving Someone or people Who Is Still Alive

We talk a lot about grief when someone dies. We understand the sadness, the memories, the empty space they leave behind. I am still grieving a loved one even after 20 something years.

But what about grieving someone who is still alive?

Sometimes you have to grieve a parent who is no longer the person you remember. A friend who became a stranger. A partner you had to walk away from. A family member you can no longer have a relationship with. Or even someone who is still in your life, especially this when you have to face the people maybe if they are a family member you see them at a function ***sigh*** its the worst, but the relationship has changed so much that it feels like you're mourning what you once had.

There's no funeral. No goodbye that everyone understands. No flowers. No sympathy cards.

You just wake up one day and realize that you're grieving a person who is still somewhere in this world. Personally I have what people like to call "slaming the door," it rarely involves a loud, dramatic outburst. Instead,  I typically shut the door softly, permanently closing a chapter to establish strict boundaries. I am a peacekeepers, but once I reach my limit with disrespect or unreciprocated effort, I will cut you off completely and move on without looking back. I have even moved cities before , because of a person we shared even friends And perhaps the hardest part is that other people don't always understand your grief. They might say, "But they're still alive," as if that means you aren't allowed to feel the loss.

Have you ever had to grieve someone who was still alive?

How did you come to terms with losing a relationship, a version of someone, or a person you once knew even though they were still here?

dream of my grandma

This morning i had a dream.. of my grandma in the old room we shared. my mom was there too. My grandma was on her ipad, as she used to always do. She had on one of her comfortable big tshirt and modest shorts combos. her hair was down to her shoulders.. short and efficient. Just how she liked it. she had her glasses on that made her eyes a little big. she was smiling. They were both talking. I walked towards our shared room, and my mother turned towards me and told me that mama (grandma) was going back to our home country. I asked her "for how long?" You know.. because she’s been there and back before.. but my mother just said "forever". then they looked at me with a certain look that tells you when someone is waiting to see how you’ll react. Almost like they were anticipating me to be very sensitive. To cry. At this point, it hit me that i was in a dream. It was so lucid. I hesitated for a while before i ran up to hug mama. I rested my head on her lap. Arms were wrapped around her. I dont think i cried. i remembered telling or asking her if this is what she truly wanted and if it would make her happy i think that she should do it. i remember apologizing to her. For how cruel i treated her. There were days when we’d yell at each other from the top of our lungs. Perhaps i did most or all of the yelling.. but Sometimes i would tell her i wished she was dead and she’d say she wants to leave and go back to our home country because of my behavior and id say something like "i dont care go back then." It broke my heart remembering this because i was great at piercing people’s hearts with my words and sometimes she would sob.. as did i from anger. Albeit, we were the best of friends. I was more comfortable sharing stuff with her and asking her vulnerable questions. I listened to her more than anyone. Because of this, she was able to strike my nerves the most.. and then i woke up. and then she was gone again. that dream was the last time i had held her. I tried so hard remembering the dream all morning that i began playing sad songs just to commit to the surge of emotions and memories. I sobbed. I miss her so much. It isnt fair that she passed away the day before i had to walk across the stage to receive my degree. I was supposed to visit her for the first time in a decade a week later. it’s not fair.

I lost my father

My father passed away 3 weeks ago, he was healthy nothing was wrong. One day he felt fever and went to the hospital, 3 days later he was gone. The last day before he died the doctors told us that the situation is hard and there is no response, I ran to my car and cried there then I came back.
I don’t want any body to see me cry.
At the end of the day he passed away. We buried him and I cried a little there. But I showed no emotions until now, I don’t know is my brain blocking this am I in denial.

Trigger Warning Is it normal to grieve someone YEARS later?

It’s been 32 years. When I was 7 years old my friend was murdered. Lately I’ve been thinking of her a lot. And just crying. She was just a little girl. It was so unfair. And now that I have kids I think of how her mom must have felt and I wonder how her mom is doing today.

It's been 10 years

It's been 10 years since I lost you. You were the woman that changed my life...got me sober and helped me to learn to love myself. If I only knew how much you didn't love yourself. I remember the exact moment your last breath left your chest as I held you crying out to a god I didn't believe in to take me instead. 10 years later a woman starts my job that looks exactly like you. Same hair...same face...same voice...even her laugh makes my heart sink. I never got over losing you but I was starting to live for you and now I'm quitting my job abruptly that I love because every time I see this woman it makes me want to scream out to you. Back to square one

My brother is joining an Eastern Orthodox monastery at 20 years old and I will probably never see him again.

My brother, 20 y/o, has decided to join an Eastern Orthodox monastery in Europe and will leave in few weeks before summer ends. The decision came out of nowhere (for me, at least), and a few weeks back he told me about his plans for the future. Since he is just 20 years old, I was wondering if he might go to college or start working a full-time job, but he has decided to end his mortal life and move on to becoming a monk. He changed the confession from luther to orthodox a few years ago, but I didn't think much of it. But now he has decided to leave his family and serve God for an eternity.

I know that it is his path and I should be happy for him, but I can´t. Ever since I have known about his plans, it feels like I´m grieving him. I can´t go to work without tearing up, I can´t talk to my family about this because no one seems to take it the way I am, e.g. grieving, I can´t find strength in my friends because they don´t seem to understand my pain. I know that it´s selfish to think about it like that and everyone talks about how incredible it is for him to find his path; no one talks about the family that is left behind, never having the opportunity to see a family member again, despite of them still being alive. I don´t know how to process the grief, especially because no one can relate to this. Do I even feel grief or is it just confusion?

Just Venting (pls no advice) Dads fiancé moving on less than a year later (long rant sorry)

Morning all,

Just a rant from me (and an open forum for anyone who had similar experiences and how they got on with things).

My dad (let’s call him John) passed away 24th July 2025 so nearly a year ago today from throat cancer aged 60, he was my best mate and as you can imagine it still causes me pain most days but having a wife and toddler you do your best to get on with things as unfortunately life does go on.

My parents separated amicably when I was 18 (2016) and my dad met his fiancé (let’s call her Sarah) on a Facebook group for fans of bands such as Joy Division. She lived abroad but was from the same town as us so they ended up chatting and eventually became a couple.

Now she wasn’t a bad person but none of me or my brothers particularly warmed to her, my dad had a drinking problem and she made it worse and even reintroduced him to very very occasional drug use again (he grew up in the 70s and 80s and was heavy into the public scene it’s not like he had never taken drugs before). He was a grown man so takes responsibility of course but it certainly didn’t help she was always caning the booze and unlike my dad she didn’t handle it as well and caused scenes on nights out etc.

As mentioned she lives abroad so they did m out see each other regularly I’d say every few months they’d see each other for two weeks, but for numerous excuses on her part it always seemed my dad doing the travelling to her and spending money, despite being heavily in his chemotherapy sessions she would do stupid shit like persuade him to pierce his ears leading to major infections by the time he returned home and his sons having to deal with the recovery.

My dad unfortunately spent the last month of his life in hospital for which she came to visit for 10 days, leaving abruptly because her 18 year old son starts his first ever part time job and she wanted to be there for him. He died 2 days later.

Ever since his death it was a nightmare dealing with her, my wife called her to tell her before any of his friends out of respect only for her to scream at my wife. The nurses on ward took the phone to take the brunt of the abuse to protect us while grieving. In ‘retaliation’ for finding out over the phone (again she was in another country) Sarah posted his death announce on Facebook before we had the chance to inform his best friends and other relations this caused serious damage to our already frayed relationship. Further to this a mutual friend of Sarah and my dad posted a photo in their favourite pub captioned ‘we miss you John’ to which Sarah responded ‘fuck the family we loved him’. Again this caused serious damage to our relationship.

Fast forward she only comes back to England a day before the funeral (a month after his passing) to clear out her things from his house as well as taking the Lord of the rings books he had promised to me (not the end of the world just another annoyance) she also made numerous hints about being included in his inheritance despite my dad making it clear he wanted us to have it all.

Onto the reason for this very long rant (sorry) Sarah is a regular poster on my dad’s Facebook page with various posts on often with YouTube links to songs they both loved. To our shock a few weeks back we saw ‘Sarah is in a new relationship’ with various posts such as ‘it’s only taken 32 years but we are finally together’. I know people shouldn’t be alone for ever after the death of a spouse but comments and posts like that make it hard to feel she respects the memory of my father. Since then we have all cut contact and removed her from social media, but Facebook being Facebook somehow managed to show an image of Sarah meeting her new fellas family already. It’s not even been a year and she’s already in a serious relationship.

Am I being over dramatic here?

Trigger Warning Trauma Response

My very close friend died when we were 17. I’m 19 now. I would’ve died around the same time if it wasn’t for my English teacher. Now she’s gone radio silent. Calls going through but not being picked up nor hung up on. Messages left unread. I’m panicking. If the worst is to come I’ll just have to laugh at the absurdity of this horrible joke told twice. E for Effort, at least. Bad joke anyhow.

My first boyfriend gone... i can't believe it

He was my first kiss, my first everything, my first boyfriend, I've never had anyone understand me before, i still can't believe it. Our time together was also brief & he told me , no one ever understood him like i did, that he was never able to open up to anyone before. I feel like no one will ever love me again or understand me like he did, like now I'll always be looking for him..

I've been crying for weeks and weeks , I still can't believe it. I wish he could hold me again, play with my hair again and kiss me but I'll never experience his gentle touch or his kisses again, never hear his soft gentle voice again or hear him call me beautiful, a sweet boy or a special boy again. I keep hoping he faked his death but that's so hard to do in the modern day.. i doubt it, I keep making up scenarios where he's somehow alive. I'm so depressed that I've gotten physically sick now.

Just Venting (pls no advice) Recently learned out of state brother died alone over 3 weeks ago.

My emotions are all over the place. My brother died sitting in his recliner watching TV, early June 30th or just prior. I received a lame brief text about his death on July 12th insinuating it had just happened. He pretty much isolated and hardly ever went out of his apartment although he had an upstairs neighbor. That tenant notified authorities of foul odors, along with the landlord. My deceased brother used delivery services for what he needed. There's only myself and my older brother left for siblings. I moved down south 26 years ago and removed myself from the toxic drama of my family. Beyond dysfunctional actually. I hadn't spoken to either brother for over 10 years, nor did they communicate even though they lived a few towns apart.

I've had nightmares, lack of sleep and anxiety with vivid pictures in my head knowing my brother was reduced to postmortem biohazard mush. I'm so sad he died all alone and although an Army Veteran, no one checked on him. The landlord told me he was a quiet, sweet man, never complained and only stopped by occasionally as he lives a few towns away. The rent was paid through Section 8.

I spent 3 whole days reaching out to the Boston medical examiner, several city officials and the city VA as well as to the National VA Cemetery in Bourne, including a funeral/crematory director to initiate a dignified burial once his remains are released. Problem is he was estranged from his 2 grown sons and they don't want to come forward for fear of having to dish out some money for their 71 year old biological dad.

I chastised my sorry ass older brother in that he needed to help and prevent a burial in a poor paupers grave. Our brother deserves so much better I demanded. It's been radio silence from anyone in almost a week now.

I cannot and will not travel over 1,000 miles north again. I'm almost at 2 years grieving the sudden loss of my husband and taking care of me is my priority besides my health. I want peace in my life, not chaos. I can't handle any more. I can't rewind time on anything, but I have a conscience and a good heart and am accepting I've done all I can and it's in God's hands now. RIP little brother. Wherever you are I hope my husband guides you along. He may give you a lecture about your treatment of me, so take it like a man.

I've learned there are many people who die alone and discovered weeks or so later. It's so sad our world has come to not give a crap for others. 💔 🙏

I didn't see it, and now It won't leave my mind.

I've made a few posts here but they help me, knowing someone might read what I have to say and understand me.

To go over some context again, I'm 16 and my father passed away about three months ago, it was very sudden and it happened while he was working overseas so I didn't get to see his body and say goodbye.

I hadn't texted him much this week before he passed, and I hadn't called at all because he was supposed to return for Eastern vacation three days later.

Generally he made some decisions with his job and his life in order to support me, my siblings and my mother, I didn't see him much throughout the years, perhaps we spend 4 out of the 16 being in the same country and 3 of them being together (because he would need to go to other cities for weeks at the time) he was an oil boat captain until 2020, then he got a three cancer's, spine, and two others I don't remember. He pushed through, got surgeries, learned to walk again and he would had had every right to retire right then and there. But he didn't, be didn't so we could keep our way of living, he went and got an inspectors license after a year of studying and started his own oil boat inspection company on a stable country. I do wish he had gotten into retirement, maybe then he'd still be here with us.

It's so stupid, and I feel stupid for crying about it and feeling very guilty but two days before he passed he send me a request to start a steak on Duolingo, and I just saw it, And idk

I felt like a little piece of me was ripped when I saw it because I never check my notifications on Duolingo but he knew I did it everyday so I am worried he thought I didn't want to bother starting a streak.

I also have many thoughts lately, what if I was there?I think I also said it on another post but idc.

I was supposed to go to him a week earlier so we could return together for Eastern and I would do a little vacation but I chose not to because the war had driven up the tickets alot. But what if i was there with him and my sister (she is in uni in that country and they lived at the same house), what if I was there and I had seen him earlier when he collapsed or when he was vomiting blood? What if I had called an ambulance 5 minutes before they did? What if I had managed to convince him to go to the doctor there because he was feeling alot of pain in the stomach and nausea? What he said sounded logical " I'll come to my doctor here when I return in a few days"

How could we had known what was coming to us

There are so many whats and idk

I feel lost.

I could sense a loved one was going to pass

I know this sounds crazy, and I honestly feel crazy for even saying it out loud, but I don't know... I think I just need to get it off my chest.

I've always felt like I've had this strange connection to the universe. Years ago, I woke up one morning with this random, horrible thought about how awful it would be to wake up next to my boyfriend and find that he had died. The very next day, I learned that a friend's mother had woken up to find her husband had passed away beside her.

Over the last year, I've had these persistent, horrible feelings about someone incredibly close to me dying. I felt this overwhelming need to go home for the holidays to see them. I remember thinking I had to go to a certain event with them because it might be the last chance we'd have to take a photo together. I found myself imagining what I would say at their funeral or what I would write in an Instagram post if they died. My TikTok feed kept showing videos of people losing loved ones, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I was going to be able to relate to those videos soon.

Two weeks before they died, they came to visit me. I showed them around where I lived, and I just couldn't get rid of this feeling that it might be the last time I would ever see them. Two days before they passed away, we had a long conversation that ended up meaning so much to me. Then, around the time they died, I had this thought suddenly pop into my head that I was going to need to be there for someone when they lost a parent. About ten minutes later, we got the call that we had lost them.

I don't really know why I'm sharing this. I've felt so lost these past few months, and this has been weighing on me. I don't know what to make of it. Part of me wonders if it's just coincidence, grief, anxiety, or something else entirely.

If anyone has thoughts or has experienced something similar, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. I honestly don't even know what I'm looking for. I just feel really lost.

Almost 2 months since tragically loosing my young adult son

So my son (legally stepson but I always called him my son) died tragically on the job him and his mom worked at. It has been really hard on me and we had a rough patch the last couple of years, he was grown and still lived with us, I wanted him to grow up and be independent while my wife still babied him. I feel very alone in my grief since my wife has repressed anger towards me for the way I wanted him to grow up, and I’m okay with that. It’s her right but it also hurts, a lot. She told me that she feels like I’m just putting on a show with saying that I miss him. But it’s not a show, when he was little he followed me around like I was the coolest person, we had a bond but after his bio dad passed when he was 16 he changed, he was always angry and disrespectful to his mom. But over the last few months he had started growing and doing better and our bond was starting to strengthen again. Idk if I’m asking for any advice just more so just needing to get this out. This is a throw away account just incase anyone I know is on here as well.

Trigger Warning My dad has terminal cancer and I’m already grieving him.

I’m so sorry if this post isn’t appropriate for this sub but I feel like no one around me understands.
My dad has terminal cancer and I am devastated. He has always been my rock, my supporter and biggest fan. There was nothing I couldn’t achieve in his eyes.
But I feel like that version of him is gone already. We’re left with a shell that relies on opioids and sleeps a lot because of it.
I thought I was over it, I did my crying when he was diagnosed in April but then today my friend started saying how sad it is, how my dad is such a lovely and lovely man, and how unfair it is. Does she think I don’t know that it’s unfair?! That he doesn’t deserve this?!
Worst part is, I am completely alone in this. My mum has multiple sclerosis and is in the same care home as my dad, which I suppose is lucky that they get to be together those last few months. But I can’t tell her how I feel because it will make her sad too and I just can’t do that to her. And I just know that once he goes, so will my mum shortly after him. They’ve been together 41 years and I just know his death will be the end of her and I will be completely, and utterly alone in this world.
When does this feeling of despair pass? How the bloody hell do I get rid of it?

Friendship Loss after Parent Passes

Hi! My parent (61/M) passed about 8 weeks ago from a very aggressive form of cancer. From diagnosis to death it was 3 months.

I became very close with one friend during that time. She would bring food, text often, helped pack up the house, anything and everything. She was even involved in making food for my dad's celebration of life.

She then told me that she no longer wants to be friends, and pulled times from when my dad was actively dying to determine my character and back her decision. One being a text exchange with a friend that took place the night before my parent was going to pass via MAID, where she was upset about her vacation being cancelled. I said "I am so sorry, I cannot be that person right now. I want to be there but I am watching my parent die and I am not okay." - to which she said that was rude.

A few other instances where I created boundaries or used dark humour were used to justify her decision. Which she then said she was distancing herself for a long time but when the diagnosis came back terminal she couldn't just leave.

It was also said that because I had often stated I don't have the capacity to carry other peoples struggles, that she was then drawing on the conclusion that I felt no one else's problems mattered because mine were "worse".

I want it noted, that I would often text saying I am not okay, if I am off it is not because of you. I am just struggling. I was very clear and communicative on how I felt.

I feel betrayed. I trusted this person during the most vulnerable time of my life. I shared my thoughts and feelings thinking this was a safe person to turn to during an acute emotional crisis.

Has this happened to anyone else? TIA!
