Goth Subculture History Dazed article: Batcave x revived 80s goth brand

Upvotes

Dazed just wrote about the Batcave t-shirt (which Jon Klein from Specimen / Siouxsie and the Banshees designed with BOY London in 1983) being on sale again for the first time in decades, as part of a collaboration with a revived postpunk/fetish brand called Pure Sex England.

Instagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/DbGlNVqipHE/?img_index=1

Article: https://www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/article/70676/1/pure-sex-england-photos-relaunch-cult-80s-goth-brand-batcave-boy-london

Excerpt:

At the Batcave in the 80s, no one knew what a goth was. “Boys just wore makeup because girls liked boys with makeup,” says Jon Klein, former Siouxsie and the Banshees guitarist and founder of the Batcave club night, Soho’s cobwebbed birthplace of the London goth. Four decades later, and the goth aesthetic still permeates culture: ‘whimsigoth’ has become a popular Vinted search word, Matières Fécales has climbed to the top of Paris Fashion Week, while a flourishing electroclash scene is populated by solid steel crucifixes.

Back in 1982, word of the Batcave tore through the squatting scene with macabre gusto, until Nick Cave, Robert Smith and the band Bauhaus were among its attendees. Soon, Klein was selling Batcave t-shirts designed with BOY London, the cult punk label founded in 1976. But when Klein opened the Batcave at a strip club and propped up a coffin for the door, he didn’t anticipate a petri dish that spawned a global aesthetic – he wanted a DIY hangout for his band Specimen to play on Wednesday nights and dress up. “Wearing black in bohemian poverty culture is an easy way to make everything match,” he recalls, now 66 years old.

Now, in 2026, the Batcave merch worn by the first-ever goths makes a comeback thanks to a collaboration with the 80s postpunk brand Pure Sex, which was revived this year after a three-decade hiatus.

Idk if they are that popular but this band is called “Past self” they are a Korean goth band! It’s really cool to see as a Korean person myself since it’s pretty hard to come across Korean goth or any alt groups! I’m still relatively new to the goth community so I would like to hear yalls opinion!

Discussion Goth singers hate being called goth?

So it is well known that Eldritch and Robert Smith refuse to admit that they’re bands are goth, however if that was the case and every goth person that listens to them would mean that there shows would be empty if they weren’t goth. I guess now could make the argument they’re adopted by the goth culture and I mean as I’m typing this yeah that would make a lot of sense what’s everyone’s thoughts on that?

Goth Recommendation Request She Wants Revenge alternatives

so i know theyre not technically goth, but most people i know who listen to them are goths so i figured asking here would get me somewhere.

i recently found out about the allegations against She Wants Revenge and the situation with their club, the cloak and dagger. because of this ive decided to stop listening to them, but the problem is... theyre my favourite band. i love basically every single song and theyre in the majority of my play lists. ive already removed their songs from my playlists and unfollowed them on deezer, but now i have a serious gap in my rotation.

does anyone know any similar sounding bands that arent assholes? if it helps my favourite song by them is Rachel, so songs or artists that sound similar to that would be good.

Help Gothic Documentary Collection : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive([TOMT][WEB SHORT/DOC][Late 2000s/Early 2010s] Obscure documentary about goth/alternative subculture featuring female interviewer, street quotes, and bathtub scene)

I'm trying to identify an obscure American video or short documentary about goth and alternative subcultures that I watched online somewhere around 2008–2012.

It wasn't presented as standard pornography—it felt more like an artistic, edgy lifestyle short or web series episode exploring alternative/fetish subcultures.

Here are the specific details and scenes I clearly remember:

Format: Web documentary or subculture featurette. It had a female interviewer asking people about goth culture, relationships, and power dynamics (specifically about goth women being "dominating").

Scene 1 (Street Interview): Man-on-the-street interview with a random member of the public who said something to the effect of "goth girls can be dangerous."

Scene 2 (Bathtub/Body Art): An Asian goth woman lying in a bathtub, using a large brush to paint or dye her pubic hair.

Scene 3 (Studio/Bedroom Shoot): A girl getting nude and posing on a bed in an artistic/modeling style.

Host: A female interviewer guiding the conversation throughout.

What it ISN'T:

It is NOT American Goth (2005) by Ryan Rhea.

It was not on YouTube (as far as I remember)—it was on an independent video platform or alternative subculture website from that era.

Goth Subculture History Really old Goth Websites from the 90s or so

Does anyone remember The Catty Goths website? It mostly made fun of badly made websites or people who tried too hard. There was also a forum to share interests and discuss the people featured on the website. I remember users named "Batty" "Sexbat" "Sinnocence" "HelleBelle" and YPCat.

How about Goth Goose of the Week? Anyone remember Kryptie who wore his make up full time, even at work driving a fork lift?

Then there was SillyGoth.com. It a pet project created by Shok. I think that was more later 90s and earlier 2000's. It was a place for Goths to hang out and have fun. There were forums, places where you can upload your music, videos and art, a chat room and a chance to meet up in person. Sometimes "Bacon Man" will troll you. Unfortunately someone who helped Shok create that site got mad at him and tanked the whole thing.
