This album is so mesmerizing, such a shame it's hard to get it on a cd 😞

I know it's a bit rough, but it's always festive a song that shoukd be sung raw, if you know what I mean.

Found this band these days, they sound a lot like Paradise Lost.

I love sad songs like this. You can feel the emotional turmoil, the pain, the suffering, is real. This song wasn't written to be some pop masterpiece. It's a song about true despair and hopelessness. They got signed to The End records and put out another album called The Delores Lesions but it didn't top this one songs purity.

We had passing familiarity with Moonspell - we knew "Irreligious" - but for some reason, they never really clicked with us growing up. Diving into this album was a treat because there is a lot to like here.

Hope you check it out and let us know your thoughts on Moonspell and this album in particular. I've read it isn't highly regarded amongst Moonspell faithful, but there are some absolute banger tracks on here.

Draconian recorded several demos prior to Where Lovers Mourn, and both The Closed Eyes of Paradise and Dark Oceans We Cry are excellent. Although The Closed Eyes of Paradise features some muddy production, I'd argue it's the band's best album and song for song the best gothic metal album period. Four of the songs were rerecorded for The Burning Halo, but I prefer the originals, in particular The Morning Star and Gothic Embrace.

The Closed Eyes of Paradise is a concept album about Lucifer gathering an army of rebel angels in hell and storming heaven in revenge. There's a cohesive story told throughout - not usually something I look for in an album, but it really works in this case.

The album has so many unique bits - acoustic interludes that stand on their own as songs ( Una Tertius and Unfold Thine Hands in particular), the post punk goth intro to Caude Draconis, and the swelling outro Epilogue (A New Paradise) which is oddly partially lifted from the closing credits of Conan the Barbarian.

Susanne Arvidsson provides some beautiful vocals to contrast Anders' growls. It seems she gave up on the music industry, which is sad given her talent. She also provided the keyboard for the album, and there are some great parts towards the end of Gothic Embrace.

Talk about a band that's changed a lot, Germany's Xandria spent the 2000s being a gothic metal act with varying amounts of symphonic influence (2005's India is probably their most proper symphonic metal album in this era). Their "Early Days" material is still my favorite by this band.

Isis/Osiris comes from their debut album Kill the Sun (2003). After the 90s we started getting a new wave of bands that were modernizing the gothic metal subgenre, this song is very post-Y2K.

This entire album is amazing - somewhat of a marriage of Tristania's Widow's Weeds and the pop-sensibilities of Silent Force era Within Temptation. Sorrowful violin, sprinkles of piano, acoustic passages, and crushing lyrics. It's difficult to pick a song to post - I went with The Feast, as it feels representative of the album as a whole. Apathy Overdose would be the obvious choice, but I felt that would be too predictable.

This is an album that really deserves to be listened to all the way through, and I have to think that by the second listen most gothic metal fans will be swept up in it. If you just want to check out a few songs, I'd go with Apathy Overdose, Song of the Lost, and The Feast. Where the Pain Is is probably the gem on the album, but it took me a few listens before I realized it.

Sadly none of Ashes You Leave's other material hits the same. Perhaps the singer/pianist had an influence on this album's writing, as it is the only album she's featured on.

Specifically focussing on the Vibeke-era (where they became notorious), Tristania is overrated for 1 simple reason:

Morten Veland felt the need to growl his way through 80-90% of each song, leaving poor Vibeke with a minor (and in some cases, no) role in any particular song. The worst offender of this is the Beyond the Veil album, which is also tauted by many as their best album.

Vibeke was supposed to be the frontwoman, who was supposed to bring a beautiful, gothic, and melodic touch to the music, instead, she was pushed to the side for Veland's underwhelming growls.

I know in later albums this was corrected to some extent, but Tristania became famous largely because of their first 2 albums, and also this issue was never fully resolved. This has left me with a bittersweet taste in my mouth where i basically have to cherrypick a few songs from each album where Veland is not just growling 90% of the time with no substance.

I feel like they had good potential and great ideas; the vibe of their early albums are exactly what gothic metal should be, they just failed in their execution.

Wikepedia labelling them as a "premier gothic metal band" seems a bit inaccurate in this sense. I actually think early Sirenia was better and more tasteful, with the exception of An Elixir for Existence, which again faced the same issue

This song is so fire

I know most fans consider the early albums the band's artistic peak, and I can certainly understand why.
But whenever I listen to *Fade*, *Forever Is the World*, or the *Last Curtain Call* album, I feel something that’s hard to put into words.
I don't necessarily think these albums are "better." They simply create a different emotional landscape for me. The early records sound darker, more dramatic, and theatrical. The more recent ones, however, feel like they’re taking me somewhere far away; I find them incredibly immersive.
I’m not talking about riffs, production, or the songwriting itself. I’m talking about the atmosphere they create.
Does anyone else notice this difference? 

Sei que a maioria dos fãs considera os primeiros álbuns o auge artístico da banda, e eu até entendo perfeitamente o motivo.

Mas toda vez que escuto fade, Forever Is the World ou escuto o álbum Last Curtain Call, sinto algo que tenho dificuldade de colocar em palavras.

Não acho necessariamente que esses álbuns sejam "melhores". Eles simplesmente criam uma paisagem emocional diferente para mim. Os primeiros discos soam mais sombrios, dramáticos e teatrais. Já os mais recentes me parecem que está me levando a algum lugar distante, acho incrivelmente imersivos.

Não estou falando de riffs, produção ou composição em si. Estou falando da atmosfera que eles criam.

Mais alguém percebe essa diferença?

I am currently obsessed with this band and this song specifically. I wish they had more stuff out!

90s Goth, symphonic/melodic black metal from Norway.

Well that's kind of an oversimplification... their album Bloodangel's Cry (2007) was like a mix of symphonic gothic metal and power metal, and their follow up album My Fatal Kiss (2009) still had some gothic undertones, but it was a much sleeker and modern album that leaned more symphonic Good band, can't wait to see what they do next now that they've revived the project (it's been 15 years!).

My wife and I did a cover of Tiamat's Thirst Snake (B-side from Amanethes).

Originally sung by Johan Edlund, we thought the song could work well as a darker duet piece.

I don’t ever see this posted or mentioned anywhere but this was one of my favorite gothic death/doom releases from last year

Not gonna lie, I looked into this release because I got them confused with Finnish band Sinamore.

I recommend this for fans of Draconian, Novembers Doom, and My Dying Bride.
