Clothing, Shoe & DIY Query Plus Size Goth Clothing

Hello! I'm a plus sized feminine presenting goth (US size 18/20) and want to add to my wardrobe but have had trouble finding sites that carry my size. I've had concerns with finding ethical shopping sites as well as I really don't want to contribute to unethical labor practices when consuming goth fashion pieces. I do go thrifting as well but I live in a more rural area so finding anything that stands out and is also in my size has been quite a challenge, hence why I'm asking about online shopping :-) I attached some of my recent looks with what I have but want to look for more tops + ways to layer as well. If you have any recommendations pls let me know!

Music Theory/Creation/Composition Query Whiskey a Go Go MeetsGoth and I need more!!

I have fallen in love with this sick mashup by DJ Guy and DJ Alan that is a fresh take on the post punk beat.

Tear you Apart - She Wants Revenge

Bella Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus

Planet Claire - B 52s

But the entire song is brillianty mixed with the 60's GoGo dancer beat.

https://youtu.be/mq8jIyMtk9g?is=mhccYL9ADLKH8toT

It is a skilled and unique take on the 60s sound, amazingly combining two goth music styles with the previous decade that nobody associates with goth. But my god does it work and I need more.

Anybody else know of any goth mashups like this??

Local Scene/Night Life Query Planning the first goth-themed night in my city

Hi, I'm the girl who's planning a goth-themed night in my city, Tarija - Bolivia.

I decided to keep the name: "GOTH AETERNUM", beacuse of it's meaning and it would be easy to identify the theme by keep the word "goth", cause in this small and VERY traditional city most people think that Goth is just girls with black lipstick who love Marilyn Manson and KISS. So... Naming the night "AETERNUM", was not going to be identifiable.

Anyways, I'm now between these options for the logo. I really love option 3, but kinda also love option 2... and I want to know your opinion.

P.S. For a little bit of context... I've been living in this city for 5 years now. When i met people in rock, metal and other alternitive places didn't know what Goth was, just last year people started to recogize it beacuase of the of goth girls going viral.

Most of the population here is +60 y/o, and only this year i've met 4 other goths (19-24 y/o. I'm the oldest one lol). This is the very first goth-theme night here! I'm really hopping to see more goths that night and maybe start to form our own community.

So, it's been hard to plan this night without some elder goth guidance or help. My friends don't give much advice because they are doubting "how truly goth" their opinions are. And I'm also afraid of making any mistakes...

I really appreciate your thoughts on this logo situacion, and I'll be posting the progress.

Clothing, Shoe & DIY Query Elder goths, how do you deal with the ā€œyou’ll grow out of thisā€ comments

Remove if this isn’t the place for this but I am 28f and I am still getting these comments and I am TIRED…
I get these comments a lot in my work environment especially (I work in medical tech but my company does NOT have a dress code, I have already been told no makeup and I comply with that but am consistently getting criticism from older colleagues).
My appearance does not have anything to do with my performance, in fact I am praised for my work ethic and performance, yet I still these comments haunt me and I’m tired of having to justify my piercings and black clothing to people who insist that ā€œthey’ve been there and grew out of itā€.

Clothing, Shoe & DIY Query Advice on sourcing affordable, summer friendly chunky platform shoes that wont fall apart in a year.

Thumbnail
7 Upvotes

Yo! Since I am looking for chunky, somewhat stompy shoes for summer and beyond, I figured I'd get the ears of (fellow) Goths specifically.

There are so many more options now than there were, but it's hard to know what's gonna fit true to size and last a little while. The shoe research I have done is more in the realm of what's more sustainable/ethical, given that I sometimes can't thrift a shoe that fits my foot snugly enough.

I can't really do much of my own shoe repairs atm, or I would have made a pair of epic-looking Frankenboots outta a bunch of older, beginning-to-be-destroyed shoes. Should probably art up my plain black slip-ons or some other baby step first, heh.

Personal Experience or Observational Query Goth as an Alter Ego?

I turned 30 this year, going through a rough patch in my life now. Recently went to a blood rave and surprisingly liked dressing up and the music. I don’t identify as goth, but I do like some dark media like HP Lovecraft, Soulsborne, Berserk, Junji Ito some Darkwave and Lullaby by the Cure.

I was wondering if it would weird to have a Goth alter ego where I dress up and go to goth events sometimes. I have a black fedora and shades. I was thinking of getting some bracelets and a skull chain too. I even have a name picked out and a slightly different voice lol. What do you guys think?

Political & Philosophical Query How did the cross became a symbol for goth aesthetic?

How did the cross became such a symbol in goth aesthetic?

I’ve been wondering this for a while, we all know the goth cross in various shapes and form, from the cemetery cross to the old cathedral one.

But as an atheist and somehow drawn to the dark side of things it just feels weird to wear the mark of christianity. If anything as goths we are more drawn to the macabre and perhaps even paganism.

I know it’s just a symbol and looks cool but somehow i feel like it’s a contradiction. Wearing the religious symbol of christianity while pretty much reject everything about it.

Make-Up/Accessory Query Where do you guys getting your jewelry that's stainless steel or better for ok prices?

Hey!

I'm tired of faded metals, it starts to look super cheap really fast and if I have something on my skin it's absolute speed run and competition how fast it can go to shit.

I want to buy something stainless steel or even silver if it isn't overpriced as fuck, but cheap sites like AliExpress (only china site I'll ever use) there are just so super small jewelry. Like I'm not a tall mf, but even on me it's small as fuck.

Local shops tends to overprice their things and I can buy just regular looking old jewelry for cheaper and it's mostly just rings.

I can go out without anything but it doesn't feel right to me lmao, as it's popular to say here, I'll feel like a poser not gonna lie.

Also that goth wiki got links to DIY blog that's invites only and like, help me get there, I want to learn something potentially new?

Welp

Goth Subculture Query Am I actually goth, or do I just strongly identify with goth values and aesthetics?

Hey everyone!

I've been wondering about this for a while, and I'd genuinely like to hear what people in the goth community think.

I feel very connected to what I personally associate with the goth mindset and the general attitude surrounding the subculture - like, individuality and nonconformity, questioning social norms instead of blindly following them, being comfortable with being different or even being perceived as "weird," and not feeling the need to fit into conventional ideas of what is normal, beautiful, or socially acceptable.

I also relate strongly to the openness towards darker, melancholic or uncomfortable aspects of life instead of feeling like everything has to be positive, pretty and easily digestible. The acceptance of outsiders and people who don't quite fit into mainstream society is something I deeply identify with as well.

I also dress almost exclusively in black and feel very at home with dark/alternative aesthetics. People in my everyday life tend to perceive and describe me as goth, and in some ways the label feels right to me too.

However, here's where I'm unsure - I don't really listen to goth music, read goth literature, or have much interest in goth architecture. My music taste is much more in the metal/alternative direction, and I don't want to claim an identity or subculture that I technically don't belong to just because of how I dress or because I relate to certain values associated with it.

So I'm curious: How would you describe someone like me? Would you consider me goth, goth-adjacent, alternative, or simply someone with a dark aesthetic? And how important is actually consuming goth music and culture to being considered goth?

I'm not looking for validation either way... I'm genuinely interested in how people who are part of the subculture see this distinction.

Political & Philosophical Query Satanic symbolism in goth

Satanic symbolism has been apart of the goth community for a while now. While goth holds a wide array of religions. Satanism is one of them, and while I understand it’s supposed to represent not real satanism and more of an anti Christian thing. With all the recent outrage and showing of demonic gods like Baal becoming prevalent within things like Hollywood, Epstein island, and even Israel. Should goth even really be associated with such symbols. I understand satanism is different from the canaanites religion. However it’s just a mockery of goth to essentially use these symbols that could very well be used to perpetuate human suffering, and especially the sexual abuse and slaughter of children as such by the IDF and those being accused of associated. I’m not trying to moral bait and say like hey get rid of all your satanic stuff, but it’s genuinely so sick and twisted that a culture as positive as ours could even be associated.
Let me know how y’all feel or if I’m just in a rabbit hole of conspiracy

Update: I wrote this in the middle of the night after a clear psyop attempt by the government or wtv. But yea I was really falling for the Iranian propaganda (burning of the statue of Baal) and instagram videos mentioning Epstein file stuff such as ā€œritualistic sacrificeā€ and cannibalising children. Which looking back I guess I really associated the two together for whatever reason. Other than that I think there was a lot of people actually engaging with my argument. Which also helped open my eyes on the history of religious symbols as a whole. Just something I wasn’t really thinking about/aware of.
Side note: I’m 19 and signed a contract to go into the military at 17 before I even knew what politics or goth music was. Which is kinda fucked you can sign a contract that young but anyways I got a job that lets me know stuff and it’s like not all these theories are wrong. So yea probably going crazy and this is just a wake up call, before I start crusades against Baal or some shit.

General Query How to be more welcoming + General questionspam?

(Brace yourselves, I am a curious soul.)
I haven't been deep into goth culture yet, I'm working my way there. It mostly started because a few of my friends are goth and I did my research on their roles in art and literature (+history but that's kind of a given with the first two), I'm in love with gothic architecture even though I know it is goth-adjacent.

My first question is what is a good starting point to become more knowledgeable? what events were important to goth culture?

I also am very new to the makeup scene (being a dude and all) I really liked how I felt in goth makeup, my friend did it for me and I liked being in it. I have some acne that I'm trying to improve or at least prevent from getting worse, so where would I find makeup that helps or is neutral for my skin?

I'm building my wardrobe out, I like wearing white gothic-stylesque(Is stylesque even a word?) clothing cuz I get hot easily. So what kind of aesthetic avenue is that? I've heard of different style archetypes like cybergoth and pastel goth, so idk if that has a unique title.

I like the band DECEITS. It was recommended by one of my goth friends. I totally rock with the instrumentals, can't get myself to like the lead singer's voice. Is there a similar group to them?

EDIT: I have some pretty glaring misunderstandings of this culture, and am horrible at English.
I don't think the thoughts were fully formed when I made this post. I conflated some parts of the culture with things that were not attached whatsoever. Even though you only saw a small window into me, it has revealed I still have some issues and harmful thought pattern brainworms going through my head. I have some personal work to do.
Thank you to those for taking the time to answer all my questions, and giving details and points to work from.
I want to experience and contribute to this part of culture as honestly as I can.

Saying sorry wont really do or fix anything, these words don't mean much. I hope my actions and behavior will better show my commitment to being a good faith participant of the culture. I don't know if deleting the 2nd to last question was the best choice, but asking it doesn't seem to have helped me build an understanding.

I have one additional question, Is shadow Reichenstein true goth rock? Was looking through my music, and I like the sound of them. I want to know if they're being lumped in by the mainstream or if they're really part of the music scene.

General Query What does it mean to be goth?

So I've always really really loved goth style/fashion, and for a very long time I actually thought that's all it was. I learned recently that goth is much more than that. There's a lot of history in it, and music is a big part of it as well. My question, as someone who wanted to dress like a goth for a very long time, what does it actually mean to be goth? Can you dress in that gorgeous gothic style without being goth? Can you be goth without ever dressing that way? Does the music you listen to make you goth, or is it something else? I would so love to be a part of the goth culture, but I want to get into it with knowledge of its history and what it truly means. How do I start to become a part of this community? I want to experience it properly and respectfully, not just cosplay it.

Local Scene/Night Life Query Can't decide

Hi. I’m planning a small goth-themed night in my city, but i don't know what to call it, yet. Options are:

  1. Goth AeternumĀ - Inspired by Latin, meaning ā€œeternal gothā€ / ā€œgoth forever.ā€
  2. Goth RequiemĀ - ā€œRequiemā€ is also a Latin word meaning a special ceremony or a piece of music to honor a person who has died
  3. Onreifni GothĀ - Onreifni means "Infiernoā€ in spanish written backwards, which means ā€œhellā€ in english.

I would really appreciate you opinions or other suggestions for the name, but keep in mind that we I live in a Spanish-speaking country and english is kinda difficult for people in this very small city.

Please excuse my mistakes in english as well :")

General Query Can't seem to find my true style

Ok, so basically I've been going through drastic changes in styles and stuff (I don't know how to explain this properly). Basically, 2 months ago i was "emo", then I turn "scene" because I liked those hyper pop artists and stuff, kind of just stopped larping emo because I just couldn't when i tried forcing some emo bands to my ears, I've always like Odetari , Ayesha Erotica , 6arelyhuman , Asteria , Rebzyyx , Dan bull and The Living Tombstone. I'm like literally the biggest larper you could ever find, I then started calling myself scene and stuff. After like a whole month, some girl saw my ball knowledge (FNAF,BATIM,Sally Face,Franbow,Ultrakill,MLP,MLB,Markiplier,Alot of animes I can list which would be alot, but yeah I'm like really unemployed, if I keep listing I might just go on forever), she heard my favorite music,my passion in gothic cyber sigilism gothic tattoos because I wanna become a tattoo artist, and declared me an Internet-core cyber goth, now I'm taking tests and everything but nothing seems to work so I came here to ask for help.

General Query What books and movies do I need to know?

I've been quite fascinated by the goth culture for about a year now, I've done my research, watched a few movies, listen to the music, and tried to deepen my knowledge on the culture. But one thing I don't see a lot of is gothic book and movie recommendations. I've looked on the goth wiki, but only saw music, fashion and history, not many movie and book recommendations.

I would love to read more gothic literature and watch more gothic movies, so does anyone have recommendations or classics?

Edit: I know goth/gothic isnt the same thing. It was autocorrect or my morning brain that forgot to add -ic to the words. I do appreciate that people correct others where needed, but I just forgot.

OG Art/Creation Query What type of small woodcarvings would speak to the goth culture?

Im a crafter (sewing, leatherwork, blacksmithing and whittling) im looking at a few dark/goth markets to set up at this year and I have a few ideas of what I could make for most of my skills but my whittling is a tricky one. What types of wooden items and motifs would you be likely to buy at a market? Any other suggestions for what wood products I could sell that would appeal to actual goths?
