This morning I was having a rough start — spilled coffee, running late, the usual chaos. As I sat down for a second, my dog (a goofy rescue mutt) came over, dropped his favorite toy right in my lap, and then just rested his head on my knee while looking up at me with those big eyes.
No barking, no demanding playtime… he just wanted to comfort me.
It’s the little things like this that remind me how lucky we are to have pets. They somehow know when we need them most.

My 15 year old best girl is crossing the rainbow bridge on Tuesday. She's been my ride or die from the day we got her. It's going to be an insanely hard week. And the day I take her in will be crushing.

For context im 26F based in the UK.

Bringing a dog into the family has always been a major commitment. Yet today, it seems easier than ever to find a puppy, bring it home and, if things don't work out, advertise it for rehoming or ask if someone else will take it.

Of course, there are genuine situations where rehoming is absolutely the right decision, and sometimes it's in the dog's best interests.

But I can't help wondering whether we've unintentionally normalised acquiring a dog before fully understanding the commitment involved.

Has society become too accepting of rehoming when ownership becomes more challenging than expected?

Or are people simply making more responsible decisions by recognising when they can't provide the life a dog deserves?

I'd genuinely be interested to hear different perspectives.

Mines walking towards a drawer where next doors keys are kept. In his head this means we're going to also get next doors dog and go for a walk and so he starts spinning in circles.

Very often when I’m placing my dogs food bowl down she turns her head to the side quick nods at me and then turns her head straight again to eat. It feels like she’s nodding at me and saying thank you quickly. Is this a thing or am I crazy?

Our husky loves being outside with our other dogs, and I noticed she loves to sleep in our kids' playset and will climb up into the house area where the slide is and take naps up there. She also will jump on our kids' trampoline to look over our fence.

We love this husky to death, but she seems to do this a lot, and no other dog of ours has ever done both of these things. Do any other dogs do this?

I don't get it. We don't have a lot of space for our ice trays upstairs, so we take all the ice cubes to our old fridge we have still in the basement for storage. He goes ballistic every time we take the big tray of all the ice trays down there. Barking and spinning as he does too.

If we go to the basement for laundry or anything else he doesn't care. He isn't allowed down there as we are worried of him hurting himself but he's scared of it anyways so we can just leave the door wide open and he will never walk down there.

Even yesterday he saw me filling the water in the ice trays and I walked away to do another chore nearby before I brought them down. He started barking at me until he realized I didn't have the ice trays and he stopped instantly.

We have no idea where his hatred of ice making came from. When we bring up the ice cubes back up after they're done freezing there is no reaction and he never was interested in eating ice. So it has to be something about when it's being made that sets him off.

So during the day I hear my dog doing something resembling a sigh like humans do. Does that mean he's bored? Or is it just a normal thing dogs do. He does that when he's layed down on our couch

my dog is currently wearing a cone because of a injury on her paw, and has figured out how to slip out of it. shes a german shepherd and her head is a lot smaller than her neck. so i cannot make her collar any tighter or else it will be too tight.

she will slip out of it and instantly go back to licking at her paw. how can i stop this?? i dont know if the donut kinda of cone will stop her from accessing her paw, and it is very difficult to get it back on once she is out of it. she will no longer accept treats through the cone or go near it.

I have an 8-9 lb Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, (4.5 months old) and I think the metal clasp on my retractable leash is the problem.

She likes the retractable leash WAY more than a regular leash, so I don’t really want to switch. The issue is the heavy metal clasp on my TUG leash. It’s clipped to the back of her harness, and she’s constantly trying to shake it off and look back at it. I can tell she’s distracted and uncomfortable because of the weight.

She wont go to the bathroom outside while it’s attached, even on longer walks. She finally did today, but it took almost an hour of standing outside right after she woke up before she’d go. When she’s only wearing the harness she’s pee without an issue.

I’m getting a new harness with front and back attachment points to see if clipping it to the front helps, but I’m really trying to find a retractable leash with a much smaller, lighter clasp. I can’t tell from product photos, and I don’t want to keep ordering leashes with the same bulky hardware.

(I also live in an apartment, so going without a leash isn’t an option)

Has anyone found a retractable leash with a noticeably lighter clip for small dogs, or have any other ideas?

Question is in title. I think one thing people forget when raising a puppy is that you are raising a future adult dog, not a forever puppy. The things you encourage or discourage when they are little, can also become a habit when they are older.

What do you do when your dog won’t stop barking?

I have 2 middle aged Chihuahua mixes & just got them a new set of raised bowls. The bowls are all identical & I definitely wasn't thinking about the color once I put water in them! The bowls are cream/white & ceramic (photos linked hopefully). Unless the light is just right I can't even tell the water levels lol!

They are used to stainless steel water bowls & I have one between the sets. Also I've kept the bowls with water closest to the metal bowl, but they don't know that lol!

I tried putting some little rocks that I use for flower vases (from my yard & they're washed) but I think that just confued them b/c it looks like it might be food lol!

Thought if anyone else has ever had this problem, this would be a good place to find them! Thanks!

bare in mind he has shown no signs of depression, thankfully. but i just have this nagging feeling in the back of my head, of 'what if'. especially on the days when i don't have time to spend with him. is there any more niche stuff i can do or buy to make him happy?

like a specific sort of treat that isn't peanut butter or kibble?

i wanted to buy him another puppy, but i think i was getting a bit far ahead of myself when i actually looked at my bank account!

A few months ago my dog between 5-6am he would start randomly coming into my room and jumping on everything! genuinely everything, if he couldn’t jump anywhere he’d start jumping at my desk and draws and then if all failed he’d just taking stuff and running out my room with it. I thought he wanted attention but no matter what I did he still continued this behaviour. If I stayed awake, played, went outside, if I went back to sleep it stayed the same and this was for probably 2 months straight. He’d also go downstairs and slam the door to the living room so he was stuck so I’d have to constantly go down to let him out. He‘d only stop all of this once my mum woke up.

eventually this stopped for a few weeks but now he’s started doing again except this time even if everyone in the house is awake he continues to do this. I have a lock on my door and if I put it on he’ll scratch continuously. I’ve tried blocking my door off with a gate and somehow he can get past. I’ve not figured out how but he can.

he’ll eventually calm down and he’ll be completely normal the rest of the day. I just wondered if anyone had any advice or anything at all? This is really effecting my sleep and not to be dramatic but my life. I’m not a good sleeper as it is but being woke up between 5-6am everyday is messing with me as I can’t go back to sleep bc of the scratching on my door. I’ve not seen this in previous dogs or other people’s dogs so any advice would really be appreciated.

Does anyone else’s doggo do this!? We didn’t teach her this she just started doing it one day. It’s not every night. But it’s 5/6 nights out of the week!

We always wonder what it really means. IS it her way of giving us affection or is it something else lol!

Hi everyone!

So I have a 14yo Shih Tzu who while definitely has aging signs (cataracts, hearing loss) he still seems pretty spry physically. He is not crate trained and sleeps in bed with us. He has been a pee pad dog for a long time as we currently live in a tall apartment building but has no issues going outside when we do take him out.

We finally are moving into a house in a couple weeks which means he will now be able to consistently be taken out to go pee/poo.

I’m torn on whether we should still have a back up spot that has pee pads for 1. When we possibly are away for longer than he will hold it and 2. We free feed so sometimes in the night he will eat and then go pee before coming back to bed. (I do know I can start taking his food/water away early to help prevent middle of the night bathroom breaks) but I’ve noticed as he’s aged, his aim sometimes hasn’t been the greatest and pees on the edge of the pad which sometimes leaks.

If I do end up with pee pads as a back up I may look into something they can go on that will protect the floor but from previous experience I know he sometimes wouldn’t use them if I placed them on something.

Would love opinions on what you would do in my situation! I already know a new home is going to be a big, stressful change for him so I’m hoping to figure something out that is best for him but also prevents our floors from getting destroyed (if pee pads still make the most sense).

I was given a new dog yesterday, and rescued pitty mix. Hes the Sweetest boy. He's also afraid to come inside through a doorway. Once he goes outside I basically have to drag him back in, and it's not because he wants to stay outside, he just appears to hate doors?

I've tried trails of snacks, which work to a point, he'll follow them until he's all the way inside, but still in the sweep of the door, then skitter back out.

Any ideas how I can convince him he's welcome inside, and get him used to the idea that the door won't hurt him?

Hi everyone. I just wanted to get some opinions on what others would do in my situation. My baby girl is sick and being kept at the vet for observation for 2-3 days. She has never spent a night away from home. I miss her terribly, and I am afraid she will think she’s been abandoned, again. She’s a rescue and was at the shelter for months before we adopted her. She is the best girl. She is so sweet and snuggly and she doesn’t leave my side when I am home. They told me I can come visit her, but I’m unsure if I should. Would it just confuse her? I can’t help but think the only thing worse than her thinking she’s been abandoned and eventually finding out she wasn’t, would be to think she was getting picked up and then we left her there again… what would you do? It feels like either decision is the wrong one.
