Last year I bought a Canon g7x mark ii… I’m not sure how she didn’t notice beforehand, but when I met to test it out, I noticed the dust blades/shutters appeared to be stuck or jammed.

She felt so bad that she sold me the camera for $100. I immediately took it to a repair shop. They told me that they no longer service parts for the mark ii and they’d have to source out, which could essentially cost as much as just buying a new one MSRP.

Long story short, I just removed the little cap and yanked the blades out 💀 Only later did I discover that if you can find the blades + springs, it could be an easy DIY fix, or just overall, a less expensive third party repair.

Has anyone ever had or performed this specific repair done?

To add: I’m not looking for the “send it to canon” approach. Being a secondhand purchase, they’re not guaranteed to service it and if so, it’ll be $450+. I was lucky enough to find a mint g7x mark ii for only $600 this week. I’m merely trying to see if there’s any budget friendly fixes I can safely perform or have done before selling my old one to offset the cost of my new one 🥲

For context: I have recently developed an interest in Photography after having bought an EOS 1100D used for $150 and played around with the Kit EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 IS II and an EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. I found that snapping photos of Ships in Harbors or at Sea to be incredibly fun and had decided pretty early on to start building up social accounts around archiving Ships using these photos. About 5 months ago I made a fairly poor decision to sell the 1100D and buy an EOS R7 with the Kit RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM. The results from this upgrade were frankly outstanding, though that's not to say I disliked the shots i got on the 1100D, for it's age I think it's a fantastic little body. I had made two additional purchases of the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM and the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM,
My questions are thus:
- Is there much of a learning curve when it comes to Fisheye or Tilt Shift lenses? TTArtisan makes some rather affordable ones that have piqued my interest, And I'd love to experiment with these unique lenses.
- Are manual-only lenses straightforward to learn? I'm not too good at manual shooting currently and I rely on Av heavily, but am very slowly learning how to properly use manual mode.
- Are there any techniques you could share to take better night photos? From my understanding, the nifty fifty I have should be good for night photography, but all I get are blurry, smeared messes. I've capped my camera at no higher then 12800 ISO but even then images I get are noisy.
- What are some good brands of Tripods? I'm using a cheapo one that can't even handle a light breeze and it makes long exposures a chore for me.
- Recommendations for camera bags? I'm using, again, a cheap bag that can just about fit the 100-400 and the 18-150 in it, but it's a tight fit and they press against each other roughly, which I dislike.

I was looking for a Canon R5 on marketplace and eBay. I bought my R8 on eBay a few months ago and the experience was perfect. Fast-forward to last week and I saw an R5 listed for $1900 in “MINT condition” I checked on the seller and he had over 5000 positive feedbacks and was listed as a camera shop. When the camera arrived, I turned it on and immediately got error 000. I formatted a new card and swapped the battery and turned it on again. It came on properly. I hooked it up to the ShutterCount app on my phone and saw that it had 290,000 shutter clicks. I stuck one of my lenses on it and got error code 20. I looked up both of those errors and they’re both mechanical failures.

I contacted the seller and he agreed to take it back. Looking at the rest of his listings he has several cameras listed that have the shutter count listed, and they all happen to be extremely low Shutter Counts. The rest of his camera ads say either mint condition or very good condition. I’m wondering if those all have high shutter counts that he didn’t wanna divulge or if this is just an honest mistake.

Lesson learned on my part.

Hi everyone! I have a canon EOS 5D mark ii with a 50mm 1.8 lens. This is my first camera ever and I’m having the best time with it. The only thing I’m realizing is that when I want to take indoor photos (like of my family sitting around the table) it’s hard to do so without a zoom feature. So I want to get a lens that would let me do that.

What do you all recommend? Should I get something like a 35mm lens or one that’s more versatile, like a 24-70mm?

One thing I’m hesitant about is that they all seem very expensive, and if I get one I’m worried I’ll have trouble upgrading to a mirrorless camera in the future (only when this camera eventually gets too old/used to work anymore 💔).

For context: I got my camera used from a friend who used it a lot! The lens is new. I’m an avid hobbyist and maybe eventually would like to do some gig work. I see it as a life-long hobby at the very least ☺️. I’m at a beginner+ level—I know how to operate the camera settings and can take photos on manual, but I’m still slow at it and it takes me some adjusting for every new shot.

My budget is flexible ($600-1000), but I would prefer a lens that’s seen as a really great deal for what you get. I like doing landscape and portrait photography right now. Also, feel free to recommend lenses that are more expensive if you think it’s worth the time/energy that takes to save up for it. I’d rather get something that I won’t have to replace if that makes sense.

I just received this 16-35 F4 IS lens from a seller, and the IS motor is obnoxiously loud. This isn't proper, is it? The IS is functional, upon testing.

I am beginner photographer, I have been taking photos for 3 years. Throughout my 3 years of experience i have shot with DLSRs. I am currently using the Canon rebel t100 and the t7 (both of these cameras are borrowed, i dont own any cameras)

I am stuck deciding whether the canon r8 or canon r6 mark ii is for me. They are both identical, but ik that the canon r6 mark ii is more professional with the dual slot. Thats the only reason why leaning a bit to the canon r6 mark ii, but i am not sure if it is necessary for the moment.

My plan for my business is to do outdoor portraits, weddings, and a bit of real estate.

My budget is $2,600

What do you guys think is the best camera for my scenario and a better investment?

I’m wondering what lens yall would suggest for travel photography with the family.

Right now I’m mostly switching primes throughout the day but kind of wish I had it all(including a 70mm)

I own the 16mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.4.

Trying to see if I should ge the 24-70 or wait till maybe a 28-70 2.0 launches ? very confused 🤔

It all started with my Digital Rebel back in 2004. I got a bunch of lenses with it and loved using it. It was a great camera for the time, with it's Digic (not 2, or 3... just 'Digic'!) processor. Loved it, and took many many good photos with it.

Then in 2012 my beloved Rebel started having issues with it's shutter button, so I took that as an excuse to upgrade to a 7d. At the time, it was an amazing camera. It had *dual* Digic 4 and could shoot at 8fps, which was quite impressive. I took many more good photos with it.

Now, in 2026, I was getting into birding, and was getting frustrated with the autofocus system in the 7d. It had a tendency to get distracted by little branches or leaves between me and my subject, which is expected based on how it works. I've had it a long time and figured it was time for a new camera. I wanted to get a full-frame sensor for a long time, and this seemed like my time. The R6mIII's autofocus system is leaps ahead of anything my DSLRs could do. That last picture of the little bird would have been quite difficult to get, what with those leaves right around it. Plus being able to pre-capture to get 40fps captures of moments that I could never get before was quite the selling point!

But there was only one "problem". For birding, my 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L was fine with the 7d, but too short on a full-frame sensor, so the solution was an RF 200-800. I would like if it had FTM, or distance limiter that my L lens had, but it's beautifully sharp and has the reach to get those small bird shots.

I still don't like editing, so I try to get everything in-camera so I don't have to. One day I'll try that more...

For now, I'm rapidly running out of hard drive space, as I don't like deleting photos, and 40 32 megapixel photos (JPG and raw) when holding the button for a half second tends to fill things up. I picked the wrong time to need more storage!

I'm trying to decide which generation of the Canon 1.4x extender to buy.

I found the Mk III for $450 and the Mk II for $150.

I'm using an 80D camera with the 100-400mm L-series Mark I lens.

Is the difference between them significant enough to justify the price? What has your experience been?

After studying the manual I have set up the Speedlite with ETTL.

Shooting in Aperture mode at a party with auto ISO, the Speedlite flashed too hard, making the subject well lit but the surroundings too dark, like a typical flash photo. At the beginning of the party there was still daylight and no full flash was needed.

When shooting in Auto mode, the flash was well balanced and the subject and surroundings evenly lit.

So there's something I have overlooked that the camera does in Auto mode and I don't know what.

I’m an amateur photographer, probably closer to the “beginner” end of the scale than the “experienced” end. So as an amateur, budget is always a consideration when investing in gear. Which makes what I’m sharing here a little weird… contra… odd in light of budget considerations.

I keep both a Canon EF 70 - 200L 2.8 and a Canon EF 70-200L 4 in my bag (neither of which are the IS versions, as my Canon R6 Mk II has IBIS). Why both when the 2.8 version should suffice by itself? A few reasons:

1. I do like to walk around my neighborhood and shoot what I see. The f/4 version is significantly lighter and thus a bit easier for my 70-year-old body to wrangle. Ditto for shooting outdoor sports and for when I travel.
2. I do use 1.4x and 2x extenders. Perhaps my copies of each lens are unique, but the f/4 seems to render sharper images with the extenders once I get away from the focal range and aperture endpoints of either lens. YMMV and I could be all wet here, but that’s what I see.
3. This one is a bit silly, but it’s still real - the f4 was the first lens I purchased (other than a kit lens set). We’ve taken a few good pics together and I’m emotionally attached. To be honest, I’m not sure I could part with it.

So what I’m wondering is whether any of y’all have a similar situation with lenses that “overlap” in your bag? And, if so, what are your reasons for doing so? Or am I riding the crazy train here all by myself? Comments welcome.

Heading to the Aquarium of the Pacific tomorrow and deciding on using either my RF 24mm 1.8 or RF 100mm L macro. Any tips for capturing nice detail shots?

I'm having a strange issue with my Canon camera. The first time I pop up the built-in flash after turning it on, it makes rapid shutter/clicking sounds and then displays Err 20. If I turn the camera off and back on while leaving the flash popped up, it works normally and I can take photos with no problem.

Has anyone experienced this before or know what might be causing it?

Hello everyone, I currently own a canon eos 2000d (yes I know), and I am looking to upgrade. This is for multiple reasons, including: wanting to get a better camera, my current camera having front-focusing issues (I did many tests to confirm, and you can't change it without an expensive repair), better burst rate for airshows and such, and better autofocus.

Now I have a dilemma: should I upgrade to the 90d, which is much more expensive: secondhand ~750 euros, or should I upgrade to the 850d, slightly less expensive at ~500 euros.

I also want to save up for a 150-600 in the future and also something else, so I could use the extra money. Is it worth saving up the extra 200, or would the 850d suffice?

Hi Everyone. Do we still have Canon shooters who shoot weddings with Cameras like 5D/6D? I have 5D M3 and 6D M1. I'm taking up my first wedding as a lead photographer with one second shooter (Nikon-planning on fixing it in post) I've worked as a second shooter in weddings before. Any advises would you give? I can see so many people shooting with R3/Rseries. I'm just curious. Thanks in advance.

Hi guys, i recently got gifted a canon m50 which though discontinued going from a eos 4000d feels like night and day the quality of life features.

Ive been mainly shooting friends sports matches and i want a better setup for this, i have a brilliant ND filter and a 50mm f1.8 II with an efs adapter so lighting currently is not an issue in the slightest, i’d like some more zoom i think so what lense should i be considering? I thought the 75-300 seemed like a cheap bargain but then saw the massive amounts of hate calling it the worst canon lense though not sure why so decided to steer clear of that.

Either way please don’t give me crazy recommendations of things that will break the bank too much (gbp and buying used is okay). Also this canera body was a gift and i intend to use it so please don’t recommend me a new camera body! It would be disrespectful to replace it so soon plus i quite like it!

So I didn't realize my Canon G7X was in a bag of mine, and I accidentally washed it with my laundry. It was in for 25 minutes and was in a hardshell case, so when I noticed it and took it out, it wasn't super wet, but I put it in a container of rice 2 days ago just in case and took out the battery and SD card. I took it out today, and the screen is pitch black. I took a picture and uploaded it to my laptop, and it looked normal. Everything appears to be functioning as normal except for the screen. I put it back in rice just in case for now. What should I do? Could this be repairable?

Hi all!
I need advice on what I should do with my old digital Powershot ELPH110 HS and Powershot SD980IS. Both abruptly stopped working and show the same error message “lens error. restart camera.” I’ve loved these cameras so much, how convenient they are for traveling, and prefer the images and handling over an iPhone camera.

Ive looked into the canon repair service but since the models are so old, it doesn’t look like they could be repaired through canon at least. Any recommendations on what I should do if I’m invested in fixing them or should I just part ways?

Has anyone encountered a situation where the disc drive won't open? If so, could you please tell me how to open it? It's stuck (it won't open with the button anymore).

I’m new to photography and recently bought a Canon R100. I’ve really been enjoying it and am looking to pick up a new lens for taking photos of family and friends sitting around the dinner table.

I’d like the photos to have a wider field of view, similar to the image on the left, so more of the background is visible.

Is the AI-generated comparison pretty accurate? Also, is there a better lens than the Sigma that ChatGPT recommended? My budget is under $400.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

When I use an HDMI monitor for my R6/R5 obviously it’s not touch-screen and I need to use the flip screen to tap to focus, menus, etc. Why don’t they make a touch screen monitor? Or would this work 3rd party?

R6 mk 2 + RF 100-400. I really couldn't believe it was catching dragonflies zipping around and able to focus. It only missed focused on the black/white winged one, they're extremely erratic. I'm not going to post pictures of my kids but I captured some incredible shots of them playing on the water as well. Plenty of bokeh and separation when the background is sufficiently far away even at f9+
