science/information I built BirdCull, a hardware-accelerated culling tool for bird photographers — looking for feedback

BirdCull is designed to help bird photographers automatically identify the sharpest images from large shooting sessions.

Simply connect a memory card or external drive, and BirdCull can scan large batches of bird photos taken on the same date and classify them into four groups: Top, Candidate, Review, and Rejected.

The results can be exported either through folder-based classification or XMP star ratings, without duplicating the original RAW files or consuming significant additional storage space. This allows BirdCull to fit smoothly into existing workflows using Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Bridge, FastRawViewer, and other photography applications.

BirdCull’s image-quality evaluation system has been developed through extensive testing and repeated refinement. Rather than relying on a single global sharpness score, it evaluates multiple parts of the subject, including the bird’s body, head, and eyes.

The software combines a Transformer-based image segmentation model with separately trained bird-head and bird-eye detection models. This helps it isolate the actual subject more reliably, even when birds are partially obscured by branches, leaves, grass, or other foreground elements.

Its scoring system considers subject visibility, body sharpness, head sharpness, eye quality, and other image-level factors to provide more reliable culling results and significantly reduce the amount of manual review required.

BirdCull supports the major RAW formats used by mainstream camera brands. RAW files from newly released camera models can also be included by adding custom file extensions.

Two output methods are available:

- Folder-based classification into Top, Candidate, Review, and Rejected

- XMP star-rating output compatible with Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Bridge, FastRawViewer, and similar software

BirdCull is available for:

- Windows 10 and Windows 11

- NVIDIA RTX GPUs with CUDA acceleration

- AMD GPUs with hardware acceleration

- Apple silicon Macs with native hardware acceleration

A minimum of 16 GB RAM is recommended.

The trial version does not reduce processing speed or disable core functionality. It only limits the number of photos that can be processed for each shooting date, allowing photographers to properly evaluate the software or use it occasionally for smaller sessions.

Bird photographers are welcome to try BirdCull for free. Users who provide detailed and useful feedback may also receive access to the full version for further testing.

I was staying at a friend’s house when I started hearing really loud and constant bird sounds from outside. I looked outside and saw a small crowd of magpies (I think) gathered round what is seemingly a crow on the floor and making a shit ton of noise.

I really don’t know the first thing when it comes to crows or magpies, why were they acting like this?

EDIT: I took this video, it the OC if that’s not clear enough lol

Hey all, this is in NSW Australia, a spot I frequent for lunch and always see these pelicans. I think it's maybe a juvenile? It had a few patches of brown feathers. This is my video I captured today.

Took this photo because this northern cardinal fledgling appears to be featherless on his head! Has anyone ever seen this? Is it a mutation?

bird identification Can you help me identify this bird I found? And maybe some tips so it has a chance at life

Location: Belgium, West Flanders.

It was sitting outside tucked away against a brick wall not far from where I live and it didn't even attempt to fly away when I approached it.

I put it in a cardboard box with a thin pillow and after 4 hours I heard it making noise so I put the box outside and opened it completely but when it tried to fly it couldn't create enough lift so it ended up on the floor of my balcony.

It's now back in the box and very calm. I'm think it might be best not to disturb it until tomorrow.

I'm thinking about letting it try to fly tomorrow again and if it can't I'll take it to a wildlife rescue place.

Edit: Thank you for all the replies, I will update you guys tomorrow.

Update:

Short version: it successfully took flight in a park as I held it up and is now likely soaring the skies.

Long version: the swift was quite energetic in the morning, it escaped out of its cardboard box independently and it showed no signs of injury so I decided to give the swift a go at flying. Back in the cardboard box I took it to an open field in a park close to where I live surrounded by tall trees. There was a towel I put in the box overhanging one of the walls because I heard they like to hang off things so I gave it that so the swift would have something to hang on to. When I opened the box on the grass the swift was quickly able to get out of it using that towel but I didn't plan on letting him take off from the grass so I held my hand in front of it to stop it from getting out of the box. It then flapped its wings a bit and it ended up hanging off my index finger. I think the dry skin from working out might've helped it find a grip on my finger. After that I held it up at a height of about 2 meters. It stayed hanging on my hand for about 10 minutes. My arm was getting tired so I decided maybe I can have it hang on a tree so it can decide for itself when it wants to fly. As I was walking towards a tree with my arm held up, it dropped from my hand and was able to create enough lift to stay airborne. It made a wide 180° turn and at a height of about 8 meters I lost sight of it behind some trees.

Yesterday, I came out to my balcony to see this small little bird here, he was very weak and couldn’t move so we took him inside the house. He is very friendly and cuddly within hours.

What bird is this. I imagine this is someone’s bird that flew out their house and came into ours. What should we do?

What bird is this.

seeking advice/help How to deal with this Dove nest on AC Unit? Cairo, Egypt

I left my balcony closed for a few days and came back to this, I want to make it as comfortable as I can. She already laid the eggs and is sitting on them and I'm wondering:

- How long it will take?
- During that time, could I still use the balcony to sit in it/clean it?
- Will using the AC damage the eggs or something?
- Should I put some water or food for them?

Thank you in advance to everyone.
