I believe it's a female House Sparrow, since I was watching the sparrows and starlings have a bit of a turf war over my feeder. But then I saw this fluffy beauty just puffing herself up in the trees. She's so cute! House Sparrows are such amazing little birds.

Interestingly enough I've only seen females able to eat upside down

This past weekend I went to VT and observed a few flycatchers do their thing on and around a barbed wire fence dividing a wildflower field and a mowed grass field with a few small ponds nearby. (A family of kestrels were active nearby too which was awesome!) I was able to narrow them down to an Alder or Willow Flycatcher. I pretty much never heard their call so it was purely a visual observation. In situations like this what is the "more proper" way to log these visually identical birds, the more common one, neither, or both?

I sometimes log on ebird but I am mostly focused on my life list so it is good to know the best way to do this. Thanks in advance!

It's my favorite time of the summer again when the black cherries have just ripened and the trees are crawling with these beauties!

The starlings are now on my roof I like thier little screams. I hear their footsteps inside.

I visited the lake near my home to capture bird images. I missed the bald eagle by less than a minute; I watched it in flight, but it was beyond range once I reached for my camera. While waiting for its return, I observed a green heron approaching. It settled about 30 feet away.

Shooting note: Matt tried to get a wide variety of images while following their progress. Most importantly, to him, was showing the beautiful location of the nest, without getting too close with a wide-angle lens (and risk causing a disturbance).
He shot this at 254mm on his Canon 100-500mm, wide open at f/5 and a 1/4 second shutter speed at IOS 320. The camera was camouflaged and remotely triggered. Matt liked the amount of detail he got in the background at f/5, but found the trunk of the pine on the right to be a bit distracting, so he attached some greenery to a small light stand and positioned that in the foreground to hide that part of the trunk. That also helped add a sense of depth.

I got into birding back in February and have been wanting to buy a bird book. There are quite a few options, so I just wanted to ask what your favorite one is! I want to add a sticker to each bird I find, sorta like a physical life list. Thank you!!

Hey everyone! I’m planning a trip out to Point Reyes National Seashore for late February next year. Three reasons I picked this time: 1. I expect it to be less crowded than other months, 2. I’m from New England so I’m not worried about the weather (and I prefer to hike in colder months), and most importantly, 3. I’m trying to maximize my chances of seeing a Spotted Owl, and my understanding is that they’re courting each other around this time.

This will be my first time birding in California as well as my first time at Point Reyes, so I’d love to know some tips or must-sees I should do while I’m there. I have a tentative list of birds I’m planning on looking for but if there are any that are especially good that time of year, let me know!

I would also love some advice specifically about owls (Spotted or otherwise), but if you’re more comfortable DMing that to me, please feel free!

Hello all! I'm hoping for some help finding a good seed storage bucket for my outdoor feeders. Previously, I used this one, however a rodent started chewing the top and has opened it to bugs and elements. Here are the specs I'm hoping for:

• Preferably under $100
• Can hold 35lbs-50lbs (might as well upgrade!)
• Heavy duty, perhaps metal? Withstands rodents
• Latches or screws securely shut
• Bug and weatherproof
• Possibly a handle for moving, but not wholly needed
• Airtight if possible, but not as much of a concern if it's protected against bugs and the elements

Have seen three Pelicans with hooks attached to them over the last three months, it's a popular fishing spot without proper places for disposing of them, really sad to see. Here is one with a Hook near the left ear area that I saw this morning.

I'm looking for a resource to find pictures of bird tracks by species. Does anyone here know if an exhaustive resource exists? The ones I've found tend to be centred on North America and don't include the bird I'm looking for, which is the Javan myna. I'd really like to know their footprint patterns across their different gaits (hopping, walking etc).

Any help would be appreciated!
