I’m in Oklahoma and it’s 103 today. I have a water fountain but I slung a water hose over my tree and turned on for the birds to cool off. I walked to my front door and saw a yellow cardinal sitting under the water hose and didn’t get a pic fast enough and I’m just sick about it! How special to see 😊 I hope he comes back 💛

I’m 14, my birthday is coming up soon and I’ve been really wanting a camera! But, there are so many options! I have no clue what would be good for a beginner! I’m specifically looking for something lightweight and decently affordable (nothing over $200), the quality doesn’t have to be the greatest either! I’ve been checking out lots of EBay listings and pre-owned cameras, but what model/brand should I be looking out for specifically? 🤔

This is NOT a nest photo. I laid on the beach for 30 minutes waiting for them to approach.

This past weekend I went to VT and observed a few flycatchers do their thing on and around a barbed wire fence dividing a wildflower field and a mowed grass field with a few small ponds nearby. (A family of kestrels were active nearby too which was awesome!) I was able to narrow them down to an Alder or Willow Flycatcher. I pretty much never heard their call so it was purely a visual observation. In situations like this what is the "more proper" way to log these visually identical birds, the more common one, neither, or both?

I sometimes log on ebird but I am mostly focused on my life list so it is good to know the best way to do this. Thanks in advance!

Call was heard in Mulmur, Ontario, Canada, July 21st, 2026 at noon.

I tried to record the call, but my dumbass coworker wouldn't shut the fuck up. I could not spot the bird at all. It might be a frog.

Any help would be appreciated.

I’ve seen the male and female around for a few weeks but just recently got to see their babies!
I’m surprised how many there are, I mostly count eight, but there could be some hiding. Is it common for them to have that many? Or could these also be the neighborhood kids hanging out together

Is this a domestic bird? They look wild to me. The bird bombarded me outside. I figured they had been hand raised/rescued and had just been released. But if the bird is domestic I can go back and try to find them to home them.

Struck out for ages: too early, too late, wrong habitat. Went out at 6am to a swampy tip-off spot and there it was, singing from a snag at eye level, no binoculars needed. Hands too shaky for a good photo but that flash of gold is burned into memory anyway. Anyone else had a chase finally pay off after way too many misses?

For this work, I deliberately chose to leave the "process" visible rather than chasing a clean, finished look. I left rough, unrefined brushstrokes, visible marks, and raw texture right on the canvas.

​Knowing how much precision birders usually look for, I'm curious how this rugged approach to five perching swallows sits with the community!
