question Popped temporary crown back in

Upvotes

My temporary crown fell out when I was eating, I popped it back in and it feels the same as before, I didn’t use anything. I don’t know if it’s loose as it feels the same and hasn’t fallen out after brushing my teeth. My next appointment is in 20 days, should I leave it be or do something?

question Unintentional Coronectomy?!

Upvotes

I got my upper left and lower left wisdom tooth removed today. The lower left my dentist said he would try his best to get out without having to do a surgical extraction, unfortunately he was unable to do so and had to start drilling and in-turn doing the surgical extraction. He was popping it out and only the top came out, the roots were still in. My dentist advised me to keep them in to avoid any further trauma and said there’s only a 1% chance they will ever cause me any problems. Is this right?

My upper wisdom tooth was basically fully erupted so this came out no problem. Have I got anything to worry about with the roots of my lower wisdom tooth being left in? Thank you.

experience/story Two crowns I got from the same dentist may both need root canals

Upvotes

I originally had one crown done by a different dentist because I cracked my 1st molar. When I got that done, it was all smooth, got the crown and no adjustments were needed. Three years later I went to a new dentist and they told me that crown had a gap and needed to be replaced.

After I got it replaced I had constant pain for months, and they told me I need a root canal and it’s unfortunate but it’s something that happens. At this point I was annoyed because I basically paid $1500 to have my first crown that didn’t cause me any problems to be replaced with something that’s given me constant pain, but I understood it is what it is. Shit happens. Leaving the crown with a gap could have been bad too (if there were actually a gap..).

Now I got a second crown from the same dentist and I’m feeling cold/hot sensitivity near my gums after two months. I went in for a bite adjustment today for my root canal tooth and this new crown and she found some excess cement on the new crown near the gum line after I pointed it out. So hopefully after getting that removed my gums can heal and I wouldn’t need a root canal again, but she thinks I would need one. My first ever crown was so easy, so it feels so wrong that I need root canals on both crowns I got from her.

It just feels like sloppy work. I had to go in for a bite adjustment 3,4 times already. My first root canal tooth’s bite is still not right after three months and it feels uncomfortable when I speak. I’m very anxious that the poor bite of the root canal tooth would lead to damage or extraction, which I cannot afford. The dentist told me that’s unlikely, but I don’t know if I can believe her when I’m feeling so much discomfort.

I also don’t understand why the excess cement on my second crown wasn’t spotted until now? Also, isn’t saying that my pain is coming from leftover cement basically admitting to poor execution of the crown in the first place? To make it worse, after she scraped it off today, I still can feel some cement left in the same spot and I feel so awkward/uncomfortable to call the dentist back a day later to make another appointment. They probably think I’m so crazy to ask for so many adjustments, but I’m trying to convince myself that I need to do this so I could potentially avoid the root canal. I really don’t want a second root canal. It’s expensive and my first root canal tooth still feels so uncomfortable. I don’t know if it’s a bad dentist or I have bad luck, but I had almost no dental problems until I came here and now I’m full of them.

The constant pain, stress, and money is getting to me.

experience/story Is my new dentist bad or is this normal?

Upvotes

I recently found a new dentist. I had 8 cavities that needed filling. They wanted to do the fillings in 2 appointments. I went in for the first appointment and got 4 cavities filled, 1 molar, 1 in between 2 molars, an erosion on a lower next to front tooth and an erosion upper next to front tooth.

My second appointment was booked about a week later. 2 days after the dentist, my erosion filling on upper tooth fell out. They got me back in the following day and fixed it. 3 days later the same erosion filling fell out again, so they fixed it when they did my other 4 cavities during my scheduled appointment.

When I got home I realized i could not Floss because there was a bridge of filling material between 2 of my teeth so I had to make another appointment to get the dentist to file it down.

I can kind of Floss now but my Floss gets shredded every time I Floss that tooth and it takes a lot of effort to get the Floss in-between the teeth. I've noticed that it hurts to Floss the teeth that had cavities that he filled that were in between 2 teeth. It has been about 4 weeks now since these fillings and they still hurt to Floss.

I noticed that there was a growing black spot behind the erosion filling he did on one of my front teeth so I went in and they had to re do the filling. The dentist said the gum was bleeding behind the filling and that caused the blackspot but it has been 4 weeks since they did that filling, why would it randomly start bleeding now? The erosion fillings that he did on the teeth near my front teeth dont hurt constantly but they hurt quite a bit if i push on them with my finger and the pain is getting more significant as time passes. Could this be an indication of some infection in the filling?

This dentist has pretty good Google reviews and the hygenists did a very thorough job when they were cleaning my teeth. Could this be some kind of filling material defect or issue or is this just a terrible dentist?

question Is there anything to put on my gums to protect them from brushing?

Upvotes

Despite my soft bristled electric toothbrush and lightly brushing I’ve got redness and receding on 1 tooth’s gumline. Is there anything to put on my gums prior to brushing to protect them. It’s been a couple months now and this spot ain’t healing.

question What should I be using to “whiten”/deep clean my composite?

Upvotes

I got composite put over my teeth months ago, they’re essentially veneers, I smoke and love tea. My dentist told me make some type of baking soda mixture occasionally to help avoid staining but when I googled it for more info everything said explicitly not to do that. Is there anything safe I could be using/buying to help deep clean? (I haven’t noticed any yellowing yet, just trying to be cautious)

question Is it worth getting dental bonding?

Post image
Upvotes

I have a small chip on my bottom left tooth at the front. I'm debating if I want dental bonding for it. I'm just worried if it'll affect me on how I eat and such.

Is it worth going through so much trouble for a small chip?

Let me know. Thank you.

question was told that veneers are the only way to correct cosmetic issues on 10 and 11. thoughts?

so, in 2022 i (23F, no major medical issues) got some poor dental work done. i called the practice yesterday and requested my records, they said they “don’t release records”, so please forgive me if something sounds off as it’s from memory.

i had a small cavity on the front edge of 10 and 11. whoever filled them did a horrendous job, they put a huge glob of filling and left the surface uneven, which i can only think to describe as a seam that runs between my natural tooth and the filling. after the horrible job i asked for the filling to be brought down to better match my natural tooth, and whoever attempted to even them out just roughed up the surface of the both teeth. they’ve never felt the same.

even since, they both catch stains like crazy. they are shades darker than my other teeth and i have two dark vertical lines running down my teeth where the composite meets the natural tooth.

yesterday i got seen by a new dentist, who told me that the only / best way to fix the lines is to get veneers over both teeth. i asked if there was a less invasive option, but he said that composite should of never been placed like that in the first place, and the uneven surface is trapping bacteria and there is a new small cavity forming underneath.. of course.

is this truly the best way to go about fixing these teeth? is there anything else i could try? my dental insurance is really horrible right now and they offer interest free payment plans, but id really appreciate a second opinion before i commit to doing anything. i am also really scared to get veneers done for fear of them looking awful, especially since they will be so visible. not that these lines look much better though, haha.

thank you in advance, your experience is so very appreciated.

question Root canal at 20 years old

Upvotes

In January 2026, I had a root canal performed on tooth #14, followed by a crown placement. Before going through with the procedure, I was very hesitant because I had read conflicting information online about whether root canals are reliable long-term or if they can eventually lead to infection and require extraction anyway.

For the first couple of months after the procedure, everything seemed fine. However, I then noticed that my bite had changed. When I close my mouth, the left side makes contact before the right, making my bite feel uneven. Since then, I’ve also experienced increased jaw discomfort.

More recently, I’ve been getting an aching, pressure-like pain about once a month in the lower tooth directly beneath tooth #14. The pain usually appears suddenly, lasts for about two days, and then goes away. Around the same time, I noticed that this lower tooth seems to have shifted inward, which makes me wonder if my bite is contributing to the problem.

At this point, I’ve spent a significant amount of money on dental work, and I’m honestly considering having tooth #14 extracted instead of investing even more into it. However, I’ve also read that removing an upper first molar (#14) without replacing it with an implant can lead to bone loss, shifting of the surrounding teeth, changes in the bite, and possibly changes in facial or jaw structure. I don’t have any desire to get an implant.
Given everything I’ve described, would it make more sense to:

Keep tooth #14 and have the crown or bite adjusted to correct the uneven bite, or
Have tooth #14 extracted and accept the long-term consequences of not replacing it?
I’m looking for guidance on which option is generally the better long-term decision.

question 3 unit bridge or a dental implant?

Post image
1 Upvotes

So, i have one of my central incisiors missing but my bone density above the missing tooth was very low. So we had to go for a grafting (about 4.3 months ago) ; this is how it looks after 4 months. Now what would be a better option, 3 unit bridge or implant?

For implant, maybe I'll need one more grafting.

other brown spot between teeth near perm retainer

I was looking at pics and realized I’ve had this sort of brown spot (shown in pic) for maybe 2ish years now, but when Ive gone to the dentist they’ve never commented on it.. im wondering what it is?
I floss fine under it. i’m gonna bring it up next time I go. Doesn’t bother me and isn’t sensitive, just seems hardened but curious as to what it is glue, a stain, tartar, etc🤔

question Composite filling material on a chipped tooth

One of my front teeth is broken, 1/3 of it is replaced by composite filling. It’s been on for 2.5 years, but I know that the low end for how long composite fillings last in cavities is about 5 years. There is a tiny chip in the back at the very bottom of the connection point, how much longer can I expect this to stay attached, since it is a high wear point?

question bump on gum

Hi guys, i’m 19f recently my fake tooth cracked and caused a fracture all the way up to my root, causing me to need an implant, all that is sorted, but I have this really painful hard bump on my gum just above that tooth. Is this related to my fake tooth, will it resolve itself once my tooth is removed, and will the dentist need to treat the bump before they can process with the implant? tia

question Extremely anxious patient, crown or extraction of #31?

My daughter, 19F, has had extreme doctor anxiety since toddlerhood. She on the spectrum and feels pain very intensely. I had to find a dentist who still does nitrous oxide after she had work on her front teeth that were not properly numb. She literally couldn't walk into the old dentist office without panic attacks. Her current dentist office has been very accommodating and respectful of her needs. The laughing gas has made restorative dental work possible for her. Her dentist can also prescribe a pre-appt sedative if needed.

Her #31 needs a crown. Once I realized it's her last molar I suggested extraction. We've discussed both. I've explained what's involved with getting a crown as I have one. She's had her wisdom teeth out and knows what the procedure and healing expectations are for an extraction.

I've you had an extremely anxious patient which option would you suggest and why? Cost is not an issue. Her mental and physical health is top priority.
