And do I have recompense?
When leaving china we were told we needed a visa to enter Vietnam (our fault, very silly). The baggage check in staff (Vietnam airlines) pointed us to a man also behind the counter (also a VA staff member), he said he would arrange us emergency visas so we would not miss our flight.
He enquired what the websites pricing was (website to help fast track a visa I was looking at on my phone), which should have been suspicious but we were desperate to not miss flights and connecting flights etc. he had us pay $600 USD - according to google this is a known scam and I should dispute it on AliPay (how we paid him).
Google says somewhere around $125 USD each + normal e visa costs (~$25 each) is the standard fare for a 1 hour process time.
I plan to follow this up with the airline as well as the Australian consulate (in Vietnam or china I am not sure yet) but would be very grateful if anyone has any advice on how to proceed.
Thank you!
