34F, OH. NFP with my spouse for a few years. We’re both active fence sitters, can’t decide if we want to have kids or not.
Thanks to some very resilient sperm, I had a positive test at home at 3w6d (10 DPO). I had tracked with my usual tools (Oura, Natural Cycles and Inito), avoided high fertility and peak fertility days, only had penetrative sex once that month, 7 days before ovulation, on a low fertility day.
When I saw the positive test, my first internal thought was “Nope, absolutely not.” I had never been pregnant and as the years have gone by, didn’t think I could get pregnant, if I’m being honest.
I went in to tell my spouse and see how he felt. He gave a very thoughtful response resembling “your body, your choice” and “whatever you choose, I’ll support you fully.”
After some discussion about feelings, hopes, dreams and what the next year of life looks like, I ordered a medical abortion kit from Carafem and paid for rush shipping. We were traveling, so I knew I wouldn’t be able to start the process until 5w5d (according to everything I read, it was better to not start the process too early, as there’s a higher failure rate), but wanted to make sure it arrived before we left town.
Carafem was fantastic from the start. Accessible (in my deep red state that thankfully protected abortion access in 2022), affordable (sliding scale/financial assistance based on income), discrete (plain packaging with no identifying information) and all encompassing. They sent:
— Mifepristone (1 x 200mg pill)
— Misoprostol* (8 x 200mcg pills, green bottle)
— Zofran Nausea medication (15 x 8mg pills, orange bottle)
— Ibuprofen (50 x 200mg tablets, white bottle)
— Instant heat pack (can help with cramping)
— Maxipad
— Herbal tea (can help with nausea)
— Mints (can help with nausea)
— Pregnancy test (to be used 5 weeks after misoprostol)
In addition to the above, they provided well crafted PDFs with detailed instructions, guidance and support. I also had access to their team via text 24/7. They checked to make sure I received my package, inquired on when I’d start the process, and texted me the day I started my medicine and over the next 6 days as things progressed and passed.
Timeline of my process as follows:
Day 1 @ 12pm: took Mifepristone and laid low. Expected some nausea and cramping, had none and felt entirely normal.
Day 2 @ 11:30am: Took 1 Zofran, 800mg Ibuprofen and 1000mg Tylenol
Day 2 @ 12pm: Inserted 4 Misoprostol, wore an overnight pad and laid down for 30 minutes as instructed by Carefem.
Day 2 @ 12:30pm: Felt nothing, so I kept laying down. I didn’t have anything to do that day.
Day 2 @ 2:30pm: mild cramping began, no blood on my pad but when I went to pee, faint blood swipes were present when I wiped. A few of the pills fell out at this point, which Carefem said is normal and expected.
Day 2 @ 4pm: bleeding and cramping picked up, I’d compare it to a worse than normal period. Clots the size of lemon seeds were coming out, but still not filling a pad.
Day 2 evening/overnight: cramping ebbed and flowed, at its worst it was a 7/10 and I could feel it in my butt. I used 2 pads on day 2. Heating pad, ibuprofen and Tylenol were super helpful.
Day 3: residual cramping was mild, 4/10. I continued to lay low and take it easy, hugging my heating pad for extra comfort. I used 2 pads on this day.
Day 4: cramping had largely minimized, 1/10 at most. I was still bleeding but it slowed down compared to Day 2 evening. Used 2 pads for sanitary reasons only.
Day 5: no cramping, noticed my BBT and RHR had normalized. Bleeding was like the tail end of a period. I moved to my menstrual cup over a pad, as Carefem advised to wait 24 hours. I chose to wait a little longer.
Day 6: continued using my menstrual cup as bleeding tapered, no cramping. I only remembered what I was experiencing when my cup emptied while peeing.
Day 7 – Day 14: back to normal! My spouse and I had sex again at Day 10 and I had mild spotting. This is usually caused from the cervix still healing and being irritated by penetration.
I prepared for the worst, expected the worst and it ended up being an above average experience overall. I never felt nauseous, no chills, no fever. Just cramping and bleeding, much like a bad period.
I’m now 2 weeks and 1 day out since taking the first medicine. I had my follow-up transvaginal ultrasound with my OBGYN to make sure everything has passed and it has. It can take up to 5 weeks to test negative on a pregnancy test as well as for a normal cycle to resume (with ovulation as early as 2 weeks post MA).
Most of my pregnancy symptoms stopped within 24-48 hours (nausea, heartburn, high resting heart rate, high BBT, cramping, food and drink aversions, hypersensitive sense of smell, increased urination).
Overall, I feel physically like myself again and have had zero regrets. I kept waiting for the emotional fallout, but it just hasn’t happened, which is further confirmation that I made the choice that was best for me at this stage in my life.
This Reddit has been life changing for me and I want to pay it forward. If anyone has questions or is looking for support inside the US, I’m happy to support in the comments. 💗
