Aaniin, boozhoo! Hello, hi!
First time writer but been listening to my fellow Minnesotan Morgan for about a year or so now. I just really need a space to air this out and I've been stewing for a few weeks. I'll just get started and try to be as brief as I can. Note: I'm open to sharing details as requested; I changed the names of people but I'm like 90% sure if found, it would be totally fine.
Despite being born around here, my parents divorced when I was 3, so I didn't move back until I was 23. I had some online friends through a local anime convention, someone needed a roommate, and we got a place together. Back then, I was even more geeky than I am now, and I started to go to staff meetings for that anime convention, and that's where I met Tamaki.
He also recently moved back and came looking for friends, and I inserted myself into his life from the moment we met. *I* actually met *him* as I noticed him during that first staff meeting, with messy brown hair and glasses, and a goofy smile, I couldn't resist going up and saying hi. So, I went right up to him, we talked, and by the end, I ask asked for his number and email (probably his chat screen name as well since, yes, we're that old.)
Immediately, we texted back and forth, every day, at great length, often while he was at work overnights. We hung out at events sometimes, but mostly at his house. He didn't live far from me and his neighbourhood was safer so I drove to him. Tamaki was a classic nerd and an IT guy, very into gaming, anime, had a really cool computer set up. His room had anime figures of scantily dressed girls, philosophy and fantasy books, a plushie or two, video games, and assorted geeky movies. His apartment was all very neat, tidy, and organised, but still cozy. We had a lot of common interests, academic and media, and similar upbringing; there was so much to talk about.
In our time together, we watched anime, take me out to dinner, listened to music (a classic raver kid who went to warehouse parties mostly in his teens), we'd just as likely go to a fancy club on top of a tower as we would play DDR at the downtown arcade, and of course, eventually cuddling and making out. I can't even remember when it first crossed over into that, but it was very bright and very fast. For a few weeks into a couple months in that time, we were very into each other and it was all a blur.
About maybe at maximum three weeks since meeting him, I fainted and hit/cut my head at work, he insisted I stay at his place overnight to watch me; which is when we moved into having sex, and then I met his family that week. Around this time, someone else from anime convention staff, Dani, also liked Tamaki at the time and even though she pressured me into 'sharing' him at first, after that week, all signs pointed to me.
He was monogamous, even though dating openly was okay, but as soon as a committed relationship happened for either of us, he'd be out. He never asked *me* out and even said 'I'm not looking for a relationship right now' despite everything we did and the intense chemistry of it all. It didn't feel like a dead-end until basically every night I'd come over as he headed to work, just so I was there in his bed in the morning when he came back. On weekends, we'd go out to a fancy dinner, go to a cute downtown Christmas event, and maybe go furniture shopping. But no, it wasn't a relationship, not according to him.
Eventually, someone did ask me out. I was casually dating here and there, but then a random friend I knew online suddenly clung to me as fast as I did to Tamaki, and I, tired of the cycle we created without commitment, accepted the new relationship. Tamaki and I still hooked up from time to time since the new guy insisted it was an open relationship. Until Tamaki and I stopped seeing each other altogether unless it was a staff meeting or the anime convention, as he got into different relationships himself. We'd still chat online but there'd be periods of long silences of months at a time. It just fizzled out, a glimmer of what we once were.
Eventually, surprisingly, contact became more regularly though Erin, his longest girlfriend/fiancée from that time. We hung out at conventions they'd also be at, getting dinner and catching up, getting drinks, etc. At a local sci-fi convention known for great room parties, I'd hang out with Erin regularly after Tamaki went to sleep early in those party rooms. She and I got along great and I think she knew who I was to Tamaki and that didn't matter; we were all still friends.
With this, I assumed like almost relationships do, she spoke for both of them, and I almost never had direct contact through Tamaki. At first, I'd send a direct text or two to him to see when they were in town next, as they moved to Florida at one point, but almost exclusively it was Erin keeping me updated and even called when they come into town and we'd hung out. And even through pandemic & lockdown, I'd see her reply or react to my posts, and assume all was well, but never a peep from Tamaki.
Until a few days before Pride this year, I saw a friend request pop-up, which I assumed he probably started a new profile, and I just missed the notice; friends come and go on Facebook all the time. I checked the photos two things popped out: Erin wasn't in anything recently posted and it looked like he'd been back in town for at least a year. He sent me a message almost immediately after adding me and caught me up to speed, keeping some details guarded, but I got the jist.
Tamaki and Erin split up in the pandemic, and while he tried to make it work in Florida, after four years, he felt the need to come home to Minnesota and had been looking for me. He couldn't find me on social media at first, we still don't know why since I have it fairly public and tried all the old conventions we used to go to. I had stopped going to all but one, but that was the only he only spent two hours at and didn't bother asking that time. He thought I moved or worse, Tamaki had no idea what happened to me. He wasn't the one to keep in contact, Erin was and she was gone. One day in June, he thought of me, tried one last time, and there I was on Facebook.
(He also never tried to call or text me on my phone number that's been unchanged for years, but he assumed that changed, too.)
After a week, we agreed to meet at his new place, catching up with board games, snacks, drinks, and music, still with a lot of the same figures in nicer display cases, an even more impressive computer set up, and a very familiar interior design aesthetic, very neat and tidy, but still cozy. We still had a lot to talk about, and it suddenly felt like 17 years was only a week, but we were just older and while different people, the same coding still existed.
We went to that same Sci-Fi convention, as it was my first full weekend at another convention other than the one, probably since 2020, and we had happy hour lunches, drinks, hanging out, and dancing. He was surprised at how bubbly and social I became, but even then, I still had to introvert in my hotel for a few minutes sometimes. Between helping with me my cosplays, being around me constantly, and also our long history, I felt comfortable with him being in my space and it didn't feel awkward; we were just friends catching up again.
At one break, we both flopped on the bed, casually pressing against each other, and we felt it. We talked afterwards and he confessed he was in that moment, ready to get my cosplay all messed up, as old feelings came up for him, as it did for me. We did some innocent side brushes, long chaste hugs, hand touches here and there, and leaned against him during the fireworks as we watched from the hotel room with my roommate. I still had my usual friends to hang out with at night when he'd go home to go to bed after I had been out all day with him, and they heard me spiral about it every night, but could see it too and encouraged me.
We went on shopping trips and errands, with lunches, and had some innocent cuddle time at his apartment since then. We've been pretty much still constantly talking and make time for each other. He still said he wanted to take it slow and figure out if it was nostalgia or new feelings. As apparently, he had a lot of feelings for me back then that he didn't share or miscommunicated; I even learned that he considered me and called me an ex even though he never formally asked me out (because he said he didn't want a relationship.) Regardless of his fondness, just like then he's not sure how he feels other than wanting to spend more time with me. I was happy to be friends again and was remembering how much fun I had with the boy back then but also enjoying the company of the new man he has become.
More or less it was great except for about five or six days, my bubbly intensity he admired at the convention suddenly spooked him. It got into his head that it was going too fast and shut down. I took the silence as repeated behaviour from the past and we ended up triggering our own traumas. At one point, I was maybe too harsh on him while standing up for myself, but later Tamaki said that it sounded like I was able to finally say to him what the past JayGrrl couldn't, so it was completely fair. It was still a lot to process and we took time away from each other.
After those few days, we agreed to meet and had a really long talk and there was more to Tamaki's side of things he never told me, along with more context to what his pandemic and Erin's break-up was really like and the periods of loneliness. I told him my parade of ghosts of situationships and abusive relationships, how my pandemic went in comparison; how that made me into being intensely loving to all those around me.
Whatever barriers and feelings he has, he will have to figure out. I guess now that we both have to figure out. If what we're feeling is because we're lonely and hurt or just residual feelings, or a secret third option which why it feels so easy, natural, and fluid whenever we're together.
At the end of our talk, we realised I am not definitely the same JayGrrl as I was back then, and he's not definitely the same Tamaki, and we see that now, a lot more clearly. Even though it was almost two decades ago, we are mostly sure that what we feel now, isn't quite what it was then. It feels different. But we're still just as stuck, despite all our experiences, and commitment to at least staying friends, we don't quite know what to do with those feelings.
We did kiss (finally) when the moment felt right, made out for a bit, more or less trying to take things slow and behaving ourselves, and while conjured up even more feelings, we're still detangling, we agreed it felt natural and want to keep exploring this space for a bit even with questions. Is this long lasting or it is only because we're touch starved? Is there a real bond (or spark as Tamaki puts it) here? Can we hope? If it foolish to hope? Is it wise to even consider trying again? Or should we just run away from each other again and leave it in the past?
This is a long one, even after I cut out a lot of our story and some context, and I know the general consensus of Reddit and most of the internet is don't go back to your ex. But at the end of everything is asking is if it *could* work. Anyone else knows if it would work and how? Maybe I'm posting this hoping Tamaki sees it and if it blows up maybe that'll be a good thing. I'm not sure but we both could really use the advice.
Miigwetch, thank you for listening/reading, I appreciate any insights, and have a great day!
Edit: I messed up the original post in very minor ways and touched up some grammar again for readability.
Context I forgot: we're both ADHD (I'm likely also Autistic) and yes, our current ages are in the title, and double yes, I'm non-binary.
