The fantasy and action genres often suffer from a power fantasy epidemic in which characters frequently badass their way through injuries that should be excruciating if not downright debilitating. I always appreciate stories that reject this trope.

1: Roland Deschain (Dark Tower Book II) - Loses the middle and index fingers of his right hand. He’s effectively crippled throughout book two and the injury follows him the rest of the series.

2: Brienne vs Biter (ASOIAF Book IV) - Brutal scene. Biter chomps down on Brienne’s cheek and tears off a chunk of flesh. In a lesser story Brienne would grit her teeth and throw Biter off. Instead she’s rendered completely helpless by the pain. That injury marks the end of the fight.

When the author/creator hadn’t fully locked in the world’s rules early on in the series, which can make things feel a bit awkward or inconsistent in hindsight later on in the series.

Star Wars - Arguably the most famous example. Leia kisses Luke in The Empire Strikes Back to spite Han, and again at the end of the movie, which gets really awkward in the next film when it’s revealed the two are siblings. George Lucas hadn’t decided they were related until preproduction on that film.

Pokemon - Early games and the anime referenced real-world animals alongside Pokémon. As more generations were introduced, Pokémon increasingly filled the “role” those animals would’ve had, until real animals quietly stopped appearing at all. Pokémon have now become the only creatures in the world.

Harry Potter - In the third installment of the series, Hermione uses a device called a time turner to travel back in time. The existence of this device introduced serious plot holes, such as why no one used one to go back in time to save Lily and James, which Rowling admitted to regretting later on. In the fifth book, every timer turner is destroyed in a battle.

When a character says something that had to be censored, and they keep on talking with the censor for an extended period of time, so you know it was really bad.

Family guy: (Season 17, Episode 19: "Girl, Internetted"): Peter asks Meg if she has any talents, and she says she does, where she starts to speak and then gets censored for several seconds, while she makes several suggestive hand gestures. After she stops talking, Peter starts to cry, and then she continues. After, he says that he will be taking her door off its hinges.

B99: (seven 7 finale episode): A very pregnant Amy (like, her water has already broke, but with the blackout hitting New York she wants to stay and help as a police office) is dealing with contractions, and then in come Scully and Hitchcock, trying to help (they usually mess stuff up). She is not taking it, and so swears for a good solid 5 seconds, in such a way that even Rosa, the police office who usually is unfazed and not shocked by a lot, is surprised, her eyebrows rising and her jaw hitting the floor. When she stops swearing, Hitchcock himself swears for a good few seconds as well.

Dr. Doom (Marvel) is famously known to be a kind and compassionate leader, to the people Latveria. To the point where they continue to shower him with praise and admiration, despite knowing the fact that he is considered to be a villain, by the rest of the world. There have been multiple instances of Dr. Doom, in the comics, taking over the whole world, and actually creating peace, ending hunger and poverty, and erasing crime. There was even a time where he humbled himself before the Panther God, who admitted that, although his methods may seem cruel, his intentions are pure, and he has the potential to save millions of lives.

Wilson Fisk (Marvel) is a notorious crime boss. But he's also been known to keep the others criminals of New York in check, and maintain lower and more controlled crime rates, especially when it comes to violence against civilians.

Ainz (Overlord) has conquered many countries and races, in order to form the Sorcerer Kingdom, and has wiped out others. But in doing so, the people and nations who fell under the Sorcerer Kingdom's rule now prosper. The citizens are happy and well fed, the economy is soaring, crime and corruption do not exist, and all races are equal. All people in this world are equal, under Ainz Ooal Gown, the Sorcerer King.

General Grievous (Star Wars) is the Supreme Martial Commander of the Separatist droid armies but doesn't care for his side's goals or necessarily even victory in the war.
"Listen to me, Jedi, I do not care about your politics. I do not care about your Republic. I only live to see you die."

Conquest (Invincible) is a viltrumite so unhinged and powerful he is feared by most of his own kind.
"I'm not here to save you. I'm not here to spread the greatness of the Viltrum Empire. I'm here because I enjoy this. See, to me, there is no greater pleasure than feeling the warmth of my fists drenched in blood."

Alastair (Supernatural) is one of the most powerful demons in the show and one of the few (if not the only one) who actually likes Hell. He is essentially the grand torturer down there and while most demons fear going back he complains about being hauled up for the Apocalypse, wishing only to complete his part in it as fast as possible so he can get back to his craft downstairs.

Look Outside(Sam)(Spoilers for one of the endings): The main character is transformed into an eldritch abomination but they still do their best to help humanity.

Silksong(The Knight)(Spoilers for the end of Silksong as well as Hollow Knight): The main character of the first game becomes an eldritch abomination but when their sister is in trouble they rush in to save her.

X-Men: First Class: Magneto agrees with the movie's villain (Shaw) that mutants are superior then mankind. Shaw however made one mistake: he killed Magneto's mother and so Magneto kills him with a coin slowly inserting into his skull.

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith Video Game: In the alternate ending, Anakin kills Obi-Wan and his lord Palpatine comes to congratulate him and says he and Anakin will "rule the galaxy together." Anakin proceeds to strike him down and declare he will rule the galaxy himself.

1. Shogo from Reincarnated as a Slime - He gains the power to always regenerate but he is MUCH weaker than his opponent who then proceeds to just mercilessly kill him over and over again because he just heals the damage

2. Alicia from Clevatess. She is killed by the demon king lord god whatever and he revives her with his anime magic juice and she will intentionally take hits to gain an advantage in a fight because she knows she can but it's acknowledged that still sucks

3. Subaru Natsuki from Re: Zero - If you know, you know. I definitely chose a picture in his insane state because oof getting killed that many times would push anyone to the brink.

Deadpool, Lobo, Wolverine and guys like that sure I love them too but I'm thinking more consequences in spite of the immortality.

For the purposes of this post "trapped in their body" refers to any character who loses control of their physical body but their consciousness/spirit remains intact somewhere inside of them. Importantly, they must also be aware of what has happened to them.

Nikki Freeman (Obsession) - When Bear uses the One Wish Willow to force Nikki to fall in love with him, the "real" Nikki's body is taken over by a new violent, obsessed personality. Throughout the movie there are several scenes where the real Nikki tries to call out for help, aware that something has happened to her, but Bear either doesn't notice, or in some cases, actively ignores them.

Andre Hayworth (Get Out) - Andre (and the rest of the Armitage's victims) has been subjected to a hypnotic technique where his consciousness is forced into a dark void known as the "sunken place" and he can do nothing but watch as someone else pilots his body.

Rony Spanngen (Cowboy Bebop) - Rony was a young hacker who fell into a permanent, dream-like coma after a serious accident. Unable to do anything other than dream, Spanngen managed to use the machines his body and brain were connect to to communicate with others over the internet. This did little to stave off his loneliness, leading to him resorting to creating a cult based digitizing the mind and "transcending" the human body so that other people could feel the same way he felt.

1. Indian Kid - Ted TV Show

In the Ted TV Show, Johnny and Ted go to school. As they talk, Johnny mentions that the school had an Indian student last year, "but they got him." Ted, understandably confused, asks what he meant by that. Johnny ignores Ted and says how he liked the guy and that he used to share his dunkaroos. Ted decides to drop the topic and as far as I know, it's never been brought up again.

1. Columbo's wife - Columbo

In the TV Show "Columbo", Lt. Columbo will talk about his wife what feels like at least once or twice each episode. However, we never get to see her at all.

And before anyone asks, there was TV show called Mrs. Columbo that was supposed to be about the wife and we (the audience) would never get to see Columbo, just his wife. However, as far as I'm aware of, the TV show Mrs. Columbo isn't canon at all, so.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure- Kira takes over the face and life of Kosaku Kawajiri, fully immersing himself in every detail. His wife doesn’t notice, but his child does and attempts to prove that his father is dead

Russ Cargill - The Simpsons Movie

Springfield is the most pollutive city in America, so his plan is to permanently quarantine the area from the rest of the world. When that fails his nuclear option (no pun intended) is to bomb the city with an explosive. His plan to curb pollution is to bomb a city with an active nuclear power plant.

Evelyn Deavor - Incredibles 2

I’ve talked about her to death so I’ll make this quick. She wants to make superheroes illegal, however they were already illegal when her plan begins so she was working on a plan to make them doubly illegal I guess. If she genuinely did nothing all movie she would’ve got exactly what she asked for.

A figure that is believed to be immortal, having lived many years is actually different people secretly taking up the role giving the illusion of a single immortal figure. Named "Legacy Immortality" by TVTropes.

1) The Phantom aka The ghost who walks: Considered as the first costume superhero, the local people believe that he's immortal when really it's a family legacy of the son taking up the mantle after the father dies.

2) The Norrisville Ninja: Randy Cunningham 9th Grade Ninja. The city of Norrisville has constantly been protected by the Ninja for 800 years, making everyone believe he's immortal but as explained in the show's opening lines, every four years a new Ninja is chosen to wear the magical mask and gain the various powers the suit give him.

Pauses fighting to lick the blood from his hands, pretty much says to Mark "this is hot, btw," continues throwing hands. Unsure how much he was just messing with Mark, and how much he really gooned to the blood.

2/ Bellatrix from Harry Potter.

While the good guys are captured in Order of the Phoenix, all other Death Eaters holds their hostage as respectable goon might hold a hostage. Bellatrix randomly scratches Neville with her wand, pulls his hair, stuff like that.

The fact that there are far more fanfics with her and Hermione, how they are written, and so on, proves that it is mostly women writting fanfics and that all people writting insert themselves into the tormented person. I will not elaborate.

An Actor/Celebrity paradox is when an actor playing a character within the work is also acknowledged to be an actor who has done work elsewhere which leads to a fun little paradox.

Goodfellas/The sopranos: Goodfellas as a movie canonically exists in the Sopranos universe which means Chris just happens to look exactly like that guy Joe Pesci killed.

Pulp Fiction/Armageddon: Pulp fiction is mentioned offhandidly in Armageddon, so there’s an astronaut that just so happens to look like Bruce Willis.

American Horror Story: AHS is an anthology series(mostly) that reuses a lot of the same actors each season but they play different characters. The creator has said in-universe the different characters played by the same actors look nothing alike.

Avatar Kyoshi(Avatar Franchise) - Sad example. Due to her predecessor Avatar Kuruk not revealing his achievements to the public and dying young, he was branded as a good for nothing. Avatar Kyoshi, while blunt and confrontational was considered a better Avatar by default.

Dick Grayson(DC/Batman Franchise) - Heartwarming example. It's been repeatedly stated by Bruce that Dick is the better Batman because of his general attitude, lack of trauma and ability to make connections with others. Even when Bruce took back the mantle and Dick was back to Nightwing, it's presented more as making sure Dick isn't tied down to something lesser.

Nero(Devil May Cry) - Funny example. While who the more powerful fighter is still up in the air, it's been established that Nero is the better businessman between him and Dante. Compared to Dante who sells his weapons to pay the bills and his office space looks run down, Nero's branch of the DMC is more well-equipped, well-maintained and even though Nero has more mouths to feed due to his girlfriend also running an orphanage, is still more finacially stable than Dante is.

Stop!! Hibari-kun!(1983) Mc is a trans girl. While the author only original plan to subvert the romance genre. It shows a positive depiction of a trans person despite Hibari only existing for gags.

Laughing Salesmen(1989) I have three examples, (1) A Salerymen hates his boss mistreating him. Moguro suggest knitting which his boss likes. When everyone finds out. They got fired and become gay. (2) The big reveal is the women is trans and its shown as horrific. (3) A wife got angry as his husband inability to do chores. Moguro suggest going to school. Which he likes doing. To the shock of Moguro, he didn't develop a inferiority complex. And decided to become a full stay at home husband.

Trope in which a character who is possessed/mind controlled/otherwise not themselves does or says something to show their true self isn't gone.

Victoria Cindry (One Piece): Cindry was a famous performer who tragically died young. Doctor Hogback, a brilliant scientist who was obsessed with Cindry, brought her back to life as a zombie with the shadow of an entirely different woman serving as her "soul". In her zombified state, Cindry is completely under Hogback's control. The most she can do to resist is malicious compliance, where she follows his orders badly on purpose. She still has to obey him at the end of the day. However, when through a string of events the castle they reside in collapses, Cindry doesn't move when a trapped Hogback orders her to help him. Instead, she turns to the heroes and smiles, much like she used to do in her old posters and pictures, before she's crushed by rubble and destroyed in the process.

Nikki (Obsession): Protagonist Bear makes a wish on a magical item for his crush, Nikki, to love him "more than anyone else in the fucking world." As a result, Nikki falls madly in love with him and starts behaving more and more creepy and unhinged. One night, Nikki suddenly starts speaking to Bear in her sleep, begging him to kill her and revealing that the wish caused her to be possessed by an entity pretending to be her whose only purpose is to love Bear. The real Nikki is still in there, completely supressed by the new personality and suffering.

Suguru Geto (Jujutsu Kaizen): The Geto we see in the show's present is actually just a corpse, puppeteered by the brain of an evil jujutsu sorcerer named Kenjaku. There's nothing of the original Geto left - or so it seems. When Kenjaku seals away Gojo, who Geto used to be incredibly close with, and Gojo speaks to Geto -not Kenjaku, Geto - Geto's arm suddenly starts to choke it's own body with no Input from Kenjaku. There was some of the original Geto left in the body after all, enough that he was briefly able to gain control and try to protect his friend.
