Discussion Unpopular opinion: RDR2 Would have been better if Arthur was conventionally unattractive as intended

Post image
Upvotes

Arthur is an iconic character, and I think Roger Clark clark is the perfect choice for him i know

But I honestly?? think RDR2 could have been even more interesting like if Rockstar kept Arthur conventionally unattractive, aka ugly, instead of making him handsome

Why?

Because it would have made his redemption arc even more challenging.

Arthur's story is about becoming a better man after spending most of his life being human trash.

If he wasn't conventionally attractive, there 'd be less subconscious reason for players to sympathize with him.

.His personality, actions, and growth def have have to carry the entire weight of making people care about him

People naturally judge appearances, whether we admit it or not. Just from thigs like movies, games, and pop culture, unattractive characters are often written as villains, creeps, comic relief, ,, like, why is that??

A redemption story is arguably at its most powerful when the audience has fewer superficial reasons to immediately like the protagonist.

Theres this thing called the "halo" effect, which is like the tendency to unconsciously somehow associate physical attractiveness with other positive traits like kindness, trustworthiness, and competence

Attractive protagonists often begin with a small advantage because audiences are more inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt. Arthur, being conventionally handsome despite his rugged appearance, may have benefited from that unconscious bias.

We we're conditioned from beginning that ugly = bad

Attractive protagonists almost always get the benefit of the doubt. like, for some reason, we forgive them more easily, root for them faster, and overlook their flaws cuz we go head over heels for them.

if Arthur looked genuinely was ugly, His redemption would have to earn every bit of the player's respect. You wouldn't have people instantly liking him because he has a handsome face and a cool voice. You would end up respecting him because of who he becomes, not because of how he looks

I also think it would have made Arthur more relatable to a lot of ordinary guys. Most men are not Hollywood level looking.

We're average looking at best and sometimes below average, which is just the norm.

. Arthur is definitely conventionally attractive despite looking rugged. He has strong facial features, good proportions, and that "handsome cowboy" look. As a chopped guy myself, I find him a less relatable because of that, if, at all. He's more like superman to me

And no im not saying attractive characters are bad. Arthur is still one of the greatest protagonists ever written, if ever, the best written in videogame history.

I just think there was an opportunity to make his story hit even harder. Imagine one of gaming's greatest redemption arcs being carried by a protagonist who wasn't conventionally handsome. That would have been just breath of fresh air for once, and I think it would have challenged a lot of players' biases without them even realizing it.

Remember Trevor? sure, he was a star, but guess what? He was crazy. he was a murderer. He never even had proper hair options. Classic ugly = bad guy trope.

Of course, I also understand why Rockstar made Arthur attractive. RDR2 was one of the biggest entertainment releases ever, like literally third in the word after GTA 5..

The main character is always spammed on trailers, posters, billboards, store displays, thumbnails, magazine covers, and every piece of promotional stuff..

A conventionally attractive lead is easier to market and generally appeals to a wider audience, and yeah its just the reality of selling a billion dollar game.

So I get the business decision but I just think from a storytelling perspective, making Arthur genuinely unattractive would have made his redemption feel even more earned.

What else for his character to lean on? exactly.. its his sacrifices, and the person he chose to become in the end.

Discussion What is going on with those horse stables???

I play on the PC version and it cracks me up because the performance seems terrible whenever I enter them. Like seriously my fans rev up like you wouldn’t believe while I’m in there and then settle as soon as I leave.

Anyone know what’s going on with that lol?

I love sitting with people at the campfire, who's your favorite person to sit by? I'm in chapter 3 on my third playthrough and today I realized I won't be able to hang out with Sean again before the chapter ends, he's locked behind The fine joys of tobacco. I love and hate the fact they made it so you can't hangout with certain people before the inevitable happens.

How did I do for the photos? any criticism or advice is welcome.

This happened during a mission replay. I think Rampage bugged out and gave Arthur John's default look instead of Arthur's default outfit.

Everytime I pass by Valentine, I always and I really mean ALWAYS try to antagonize Downes. I harass him a bunch of times in a bunch of ways but I think this one has to be the most fun. Herding him all the way up to the Grizzly in to Epilogue. LOL
