Located in Mexico, Lake Catemaco and tributaries of the lake and the Río Grande de Catemaco above the falls at El Salto de Eyipantla. They’re a sister species to Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculata. All members in this genus was originally placed as Heterandria (with Heterandria formosa). Males gets to around 1.5-2 inches, and females 2-3 inches in size. They are slender, olive gray-tan in color, with black reticulations between the scales giving them the dark appearance, short penduncles, with narrow faces, and a black spot on the base, of their tail fins.

F1 Tiger Liberty hybrid (M) x Liberty Molly (F)
(75% Poecilia salvatoris, 25% Limia islai)

My Liberty females keeps popping out more F2’s. More than what I want, but it’s fine. Going to just keep females from them as backups for my project. As I wait for my female Tiger liberties to give me their version of F2 fry backcross to Limia, which I want to use for breeding. For now plan is to backcross the future F2 females to pure Liberty that’s about it. They do look very nice better than F1, they still maintain the islai black dorsals (some showing spot markings on the fins not seen in F1), and copper toned body. Something I’m looking for in my project. Stripes is translucent worse than F1 but I don’t mind it with them that can be fixed, looks to be that it’s a recessive trait now over incomplete dominant.

Tiger Limia (M) x F1 Tiger Liberty hybrid (F)

It’s growing quite nicely I really like it. Unfortunately just working with 1 juvenile. I’m hoping the F1 Tiger Liberty females give me fry soon they should be more backcross to islai. I also have the females with a single Limia nigrofasciata male, and a couple F1 Limia (islai x tridens) males. I do want F2 fry from the hybrid limia’s and the nigrofasciata before I can retire the ladies and my limia’s and focus heavily on F2 gen. Seeing this juvenile is Limia leaning he ofc shows the bold islai striping, black dorsal, and slight lean body form, while having the salvatoris narrow penduncle. I’m more excited to see how it’s mature form turns out to be. Also hoping it’s a male, plan to cross him to my F3 Blonde Liberty females and to the other F2’s backcross to Limia female .

US native species, located on the East coast, from North Carolina, down to south Florida, around the Gulf of Mexico, Texas, and Mexico. Males can get up to 3-5 inches and females 3-4 inches. They have a range of phenotypes. They are robust, thick penduncle, large sailfin, lateral dots running across the body, and dominant/courting males, faces turns a golden orange. They are one of the few species of mollies that has been domesticated to fancy forms, and hybridize with other specimens, we see in the hobby. They prefer brackish conditions but can tolerate full fresh to full salt water conditions.

Located in Cayo Macal River, Mt. Pine Ridge, Belize. Males gets to around 2 inches and females 2.5-3 inches in size. Teresae is part of the Mexicana complex, and is one of the more endangered species of Unicuspid mollies. From what I can find this species they are almost like a dark gray-black!and very robust. I do wish there was updated media on this species, because I can tell they are a pretty.

Located in upper Rio Panucho system in Mexico. They share waters with other members (pygmaeus, and variatus), but are separated into different niches. Also this species is close relatives to X. birchmanni, and X. malinche. Males gets to 1.2-1.5 inches and females 2 inches in size. Apparence wise they looks similar to X. malinche, but having a more rounded body shape, longer swordtails, a large spot on their tails and bigger dorsals.

Located in El Salvador - Río Lempa, Cara Sucia San Pedro, and Río Jiboa; Departments: Santa Ana, Chalatenango, Ahuachapán, San Salvador, Cuscatlán, La Paz, San Miguel, and Morazán. Males gets to around 2-2.5 inches and females 2.5-3 inches in size. They are part of the Mexicana complex, and sister species to Poecilia butleri. They are slender bodied, grey in color with bluish iridescent scales (giving off an opaline color), and yellow trimmed dorsal and tail fins.

Located in Nicaragua. They stay relatively small males and females gets to about 1.3-1.7 inches in size. The males sports long gonopodiums. They also have very deep orange/yellow colors with a robust body shape, nice dark dorsals and eyes. Overall an amazing species

Located on the pacific side of southern Mexico. Males reaches around 1.5 inches and females around 2 inches in length. They are olive gray, slender build, silverish blue metallic sheen, black streak on the eyes, spaced out narrow bars, with a spot on the dorsal, and gonopodium for males. They can tolerate both full fresh to brackish water conditions.

Located in Mexico. Males reached around 2.5-3 inches and females 3-4 inches in size. They’re part of mexicana species complex, close relatives to Poecilia thermalis, sulphuraria, maylandi and petenensis (not the now named Kykesis but the first Poecilia petenensis). They have a thick yellow-golden body, with a silver underside, rows of yellow dots, blue iridescent scales, and vibrant lemon yellow-orange fins. Some specimens can be mottled to having a black hued body. This species prefer more brackish conditions but can tolerate full fresh. Overall beautiful and solid looking molly species.

Located in southern U.S, introduced almost anywhere that has a water, to control mosquito population. Males reaches around 1.2-1.6 inches, and females 1.5-2.8 inches in length. Sister species to Gambusia holbrooki. To unexperienced people, they always get called guppies…mainly the females, because how similar they are in shape, size, and both giving livebirth. Both male and female can sometimes have a black streak going thru the eye to under it. Females has a visible gravid spot, and chunky body when holding fry. Males are small and slender.

Located in Cuba. Close relatives to Girardinus metallicus. Males gets abit over an inch to 1.3 inches and females gets to around 1.8 inches in size. I don’t have any male pictures for reference but they are slender built specimens, with olive grey-yellowish bodies, a row of iridescent vertical streaks going across the body and silver colored eyes. An attractive Girardinus species.

Located in Haiti’s Tiburon peninsula. Was once considered Limia sp. “Americana” for years, but recently considered its own separated species. Almost identical to Limia dominicensis but they’re more vibrant in comparison, and smaller. And males sports a tri hooked gonopodium which isn’t seen in Dominicensis males. Males of this species gets to about 1.3-1.5 inches and females 1.5-2.5 inches. Both males and females upper part of their body has distinct black bars to them. They have a nice olive gray body, silver chest, orange dorsal with a black spot, and blue metallic sheen, while only males have an orange tinge tail fin. Some instances the males can look abit more silvery blue because of the blue metallic scales. I kept this species, and what I really love about them, sort of like sailfin mollies when the triden males are sparring, or doing a mating ritual, their face and throat becomes a bright orange, and they’ll tilt their body abit to flaunt their chest and black bars.

Located in northwestern Mexico where it is present in the upper reaches of streams and arroyos on the western side of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. Males gets to around 1.1-1.3 inches and females around 1.5 inches in size. They are spend bodied fish dark grey base body males sometimes getting black. I’m the wild they naturally hybridize with Poeciliopsis lucida, and Poeciliopsis occidentalis. Those hybrid specimens is usually via a material line tracing from monachas to paternal line of the other species. They can create an all female clonal hybrid like Poecilia formosa which is pretty sick. Ofc like other members they brood fry via Superfetations.

Located in northern Sonora, Mexico, and introduced population in Arizona, U.S. this species sometimes considered a subspecies of Poeciliopsis occidentalis. To tell the two species apart, they have longer snouts, and lateral banding on the body of the females. Overall they are olive gray in color with some speckling, during the breeding season males can become jet black in color. Males gets to around .98 of an inch and females 1.2-1.5 inches in size. Like all members of this genus the females, can carry multiple broods (via Superfetation) at once giving birth periodically.

Located in Costa Rica. Males reaches around 1.75-2 inches and females 2.5 inches in size. They are olive gray in color, with vertical black bars. A nice blue iridescent sheen to them, yellow trimmed dorsals, and partially black anal fins/gonopodiums. A very attractive species. The down side… they are heavy fry eaters.

Visiting family in Florida and we drove up to Orlando and I went dip netting and caught some mosquitofish and a black acara. And other pics I took by the ponds

Used to be located in a small section of the San Juan River system, Mexico. Couchianus is part of the Northern platyfish species group, being close relatives to Xiphophorus gordani, and Xiphophorus meyeri. Males gets to around 1.5 inches and females around 2.3 inches in size. They are moderately robust, olive gray in color, with some specimens having black blotches on them. This species is currently extinct in the wild according to the IUCN, due to invasive species and habitat destruction. There’s still specimens being kept in the hobby, by serious hobbyist and organizations like the ALA (American Livebearers Association), XWG (Xiphophorus Working Group), and XGSC (Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center) at Texas University.

Located in Jamaica. Male gets around 1.3-1.5 inches, and females 2 inches in size. A small sized Limia species. Like in the common name males has black pigments on the under side of its body, as for females they have a very opened gravid area that’s black when holding fry. Not much to say on them but the pics says it all.

Located in lake Miragoane, southwestern Haiti. Males gets to around 1.5 inches and females around 1.7 inches. They share waters with other livebearer species like, Limia (nigrofasciata, garnieri, mandibularis, immaculata, miragoanensis, islai), and Gambusia beebei to name a few. Appearance wise it’s easily mistaken for Limia vittata, but both species comes from two different countries as in Vittata is only found in Cuba. They are both slightly robust, with yellowish olive gray bodies. And black and orange melanistic patches all over them.

Located in Rio Los Espinos, Izabal basin, Guatemala. They’re part of the mexicana complex. Males gets to around 2.5-3 inches and females as well. They are moderately robust, with small heads. large tail fins, males have a nice wide dorsal with black pigments, rows of lateral dots, and a nice blue iridescent sheen to them.

Located in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Males gets to around 1.5 inches and females around 2 inches in size. They are slender specimens with orange gray hue body, black dorsals with translucent orange in the center. The males gonopodium are fixed off centered on the body, and it has a hook at the end, to keep it inside the females when mating. And yes as the scientific name literally means Strange Hooked P*nis. I find it funny every time lol.
