Earliest Tafsirs Said the Sun Literally Sets in a Muddy Spring

The Quran describes Dhul Qarnayn's journey:

“And he followed a road till, when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found a people thereabout.”
Quran 18:85-86

The full story goes like this:

The Dhul Qarnayn story begins: “They will ask thee of Dhu’l-Qarneyn.” In it, he traveled until he reached (balagha) the setting place of the sun and found (wajada) the sun setting in a muddy spring, and found (wajada) a community near it. Then he reached (balagha) the rising place of the sun where people had no shelter from it. Then he followed another path until he reached (balagha) a place between two mountains, where he found (wajada) a people asking for help against Gog and Magog. He built an iron and copper wall between the cliffs to seal them off until doomsday.
Quran 18:83-102

Quran 18:86 in Arabic word for word creates two independent problems:

  1. First, Dhul Qarnayn reached (balagha) a location: the setting place of the sun (maghriba l-shamsi).
  2. There, he found (wajada) the sun setting in a muddy spring (ʿaynin ḥami-atin). And he found (wajada) a community near it.

The earliest tafsirs, including Tafsir al-Tabari, literally said the sun set in a muddy spring:

The sun sets in a spring of murky, black mud; then it falls down in prostration beneath the Throne, seeks permission [to rise again], and is granted permission.” (on Quran 36:38)
“This means that the sun and moon enter beneath the earth from the west and emerge from beneath the earth in the east, then travel through the sky until they set in the west. This is their orbit.(on Quran 36:40)
“‘He found the sun setting in a muddy spring’ - that is, a hot, black spring.” (on Quran 18:86)
Tafsir Muqatil (d. 767 AD)

“It has reached me that the sun sets in a spring, and the spring hurls it to the east.”
Tafsir Sa’id b. Mansur (d. 842 AD)
Tafsir al-Tha’labi (d. 1035 AD)
Tafsir al-Suyuti (d. 1505 AD)

“A city with twelve thousand gates; were it not for its inhabitants’ voices, people would hear the sun fall as it sets.
Abu al-Shaykh, al-Azama (d. 979 AD)
Tafsir al-Suyuti (d. 1505 AD)

“The reading ḥamiʾah means [a spring] of black, foul-smelling mud; ḥāmiyah means ‘hot.’ … ‘And he found (wajada) beside it a people’ - that is, beside the spring in which the sun sets.
Tafsir al-Samarqandi (d. 984 AD)

Tafsir al-Tabari (d. 923 AD), widely considered one of the most authoritative Quranic commentaries, on Quran 18:86

Tafsir al-Tabari preserves the debate between Muhammad's Companion Ibn Abbas and the salaf over whether the spring where the sun sets is muddy or hot. And Ibn Abbas, who Muhammad prayed for to get the correct interpretation of the book (Sunan Ibn Majah 166), said that the sun sets in a muddy spring. Tabari says both readings are correct because the sun could set in a spring that is both hot and muddy:

Allah says: (Until, when Dhul-Qarnayn reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring.) The readers differed on how to read this. Some of the readers of Madina and Basra read it as (in a muddy spring), meaning that the sun sets in a spring that contains mud. While a group of the readers of Medina and the majority of the people of Kufa read it as, (in a warm spring) meaning that the sun sets in a spring of warm water.

Al-Husayn b. Al-Junayd ← Sayd b. Salamah ← Ismail b. Aliyah ← Uthman b. Hadir: I heard Abdullah b. Abbas said: Muawiyah recited this verse, and he said (warm spring) and Ibn Abbas said: it is (muddy spring). He said: So they sent to Ka'b Al-Ahbar and asked him. Ka'b said: As for the sun, it disappears in 'Thatin', which matched what Ibn Abbas said, and the word tha'at means "mud".

And in my (Tabari's) mind the correct opinion is to say that they are both popular readings in the land, and each one has a correctness about it and an understandable meaning, and neither contradicts the other, for it is possible that the sun sets in a hot spring that has mud and sludge, so a reader who uses "hot spring" is describing its temperature, and the reader who uses "muddy spring" is describing that it has mud and sludge. Both versions have been narrated to us.

Muhammad b. Al-Muthanna ← Yazid b. Harun ← The common people ← A freed slave of Abdullah b. Amr ← Abdullah: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, looked at the sun when it set, and said: 'In the blazing fire of Allah, in the blazing fire of Allah: If it wasn't for Allah's command, the sun would burn all those who are on earth.'"
Tafsir al-Tabari (d. 923 AD) on Quran 18:86

They started changing it only after it became too embarrassing.

Rant 🤬 I hate traditional pakistani clothing

I just never understood pakistani clothing, i wish i was born into a culture where just wearing simple t shirt, pants, skirts, normal dresses was considered normal, some people here dont even consider simple modest t shirts modest enough especially on women. So i tend find shopping for pakistani clothing very boring since i dont seem to like pakistani clothing in general since i never understood traditional clothing. Even for weddings, i just sometimes wish normal dresses and suits wear normalized like it is in western or even some arab weddings as well. Sure some pakistani clothing can be comfortable but that's about it.

Quran/Hadith Sexually kissing and touching suckling infants/little kids is allowed in hanbali madhab🤮

Not so fun fact: it’s allowed in all the madhabs. Never let the apologists bullshit you what’s permissible in Islam.

The yellow text is:

“And it is related from him [Aḥmad] that he said: If she is small — by what means would she undergo istibrāʾ, if she is a suckling infant (raḍīʿa)?”

(Istibra is iddah for non-free girls)

“It has been said: as for when she is a young girl whose like is not had intercourse with — kissing her (qublatuhā) and physical contact with her are not forbidden. This is Aḥmad’s explicit ruling (manṣūṣ) in one of the two reports from him, chosen by Abū Muḥammad [al-Maqdisī, i.e. Ibn Qudāma]…”

Why do Indian and subcon Muslims claim foreign muslim athletes and footballers and demean non-muslims like Hindus? How is that Indian Muslims insult Hindus by claiming foreigners like Khabib and muslim footballers like Salah? Hindus are the most successful religious group at sports in the subcon

Hello everyone. I clarify at the beginning that I'm making this post not to demean any religion or ethnicity. I just want to ask a question and state some facts. I don't hate or insult any particular community or religion. I just saw on X(Twitter) many Indian and subcon muslims claiming muslim athletes like football players current playing at the world cup. I don't mean to demean any community but it's true that Hindus are the most successful religious group in the subcontinent. Again I don't hate muslims or any other religion but they are far behind at sports compared to Hindus. Almost all of India's top athletes are Hindus and some Sikhs. Though this isn't related to Indian Muslims but I have seen many pakistanis too claim foreign muslims amd demean Hindus on X. What's funny is that pakistan literally won an olympic medal after 32 years while India has won 24 medals at the last 5 olympics most of which were won by Hindus and some Sikhs. Not only that be it in sports like hockey, badminton, shooting, wrestling, boxing, tennis, table tennis, athletics. All of India's medals are won mostly by Hindus. I genuinely find this act of muslims to be illogical. Lastly I do support Indian muslim athletes like Nikhat Zareen and Suhail Bhat too.

Commercial "Nikah Halala" operations are controversial businesses in Pakistan. Operating primarily in major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, these "halala centers" or rogue clerics facilitate temporary, paid marriages so a divorced woman can legally remarry her first husband after an irrevocable triple talaq.

Quran/Hadith Sex Slavery in Islam: Quran Verses, Muhammad's Example and His Instructions on Whether to Pull Out of Captive Women

Quran verses authorizing sex with captives ("those your right hands possess"):

  • Quran 4:24: "Also [forbidden are] married women—except [female] captives in your possession."
  • Quran 23:5-6: "And they who guard their private parts Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed."
  • Quran 70:29-31: "Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed — But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors."

Verse Context (Authentic Hadith):

"the Companions of Allah's Messenger (may peace te upon him) seemed to refrain from having intercourse with captive women because of their husbands being polytheists. Then Allah, Most High, sent down regarding that:
" And women already married, except those whom your right hands possess (iv. 24)"
Sahih Muslim 1456a

Muhammad's Example:

"It was narrated from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah had a female slave with whom he had intercourse"
Sunan an-Nasa'i 3959

Muhammad on whether to pull out when having sex with captive women:

Muhammad's men wanted to have sex with women taken in war as captives. They asked Muhammad whether it was ok to pull out. Muhammad said it doesn't matter, because if God willed a baby, it would happen anyway.

"O Abu Sa'id, did you hear Allah's Messenger mentioning al-'azl? He said: Yes, and added: We went out with Allah's Messenger on the expedition to the Bi'l-Mustaliq and took captive some excellent Arab women; and we desired them, for we were suffering from the absence of our wives, (but at the same time) we also desired ransom for them. So we decided to have sexual intercourse with them but by observing 'azl (Withdrawing the male sexual organ before emission of semen to avoid-conception). But we said: We are doing an act whereas Allah's Messenger is amongst us; why not ask him? So we asked Allah's Messenger, and he said: It does not matter if you do not do it, for every soul that is to be born up to the Day of Resurrection will be born."
Sahih Muslim 1438a

How is this fair moderation?

Mods, seriously… are you serious?

Jis mulk me paida hote hi bchy k kaan me azaan di jati hai. Naam religion decide krta hai. Don’t even get me started on child abuse cases physical and sexual both. School me Islamiyat compulsory. Ghr me namaz. Roza. Masjid. TV pe deen. Rishtydaro k lectures. Har khushi, har gham, har event religion k around. Puri upbringing Islam k gird ghoomti hai

Bachpan se hme bataya jata hai kya sochna hai, kya bolna hai, kis se darna hai aur kis pe yaqeen rkhna hai

Aur jab bcha sawal puchta hai to jawab kya milta hai?

“Astaghfirullah”

“Shaitan waswasy dal rha hai”

“Allah behtar janta hai”

“Iman kmzor hai”

“Zyada sawal mt kro”

Ya phir daant, dhamki, sharmindagi aur molviyon ka guilt tripping

Critical thinking ki jaga ratta marna, sawal dabana aur authority ko bina challenge kiye maan lena sikhaya jata hai

Aur phir jab wohi bcha bara hoke bachpan se jo kuch uske dimagh me bhara gaya us pe sawal uthana chahe, uske bare me baat krna chahe ya apni kahani share krna chahe, mods bolte hain, “Islam sirf hafte me ek din”

Kya mazak hai?

Humari puri zindagi is religion ne shape ki hai. Obviously hum usi pe baat krenge. Ye koi random topic nhi, ye humari identity hai

Aur har us subreddit se meri sakht disagreement hai jo discussion ko censor krta hai…start encouraging respectful discussion instead of shutting it down.
