News [Cassavell] After the game, A.J. Preller roamed the Truist Park outfield on his phone. It's that time of year. And, no, one game won't sway his Deadline direction. But the Padres presented a pretty clear case Tuesday that they're contenders in a crowded WC picture.

Discussion Thread What do you really expect from the new Padres ownership?

With the new ownership group closing the deal and coming to town, what are your true expectations?

What are your on-the-field and off-the-field expectations? Do you think ticket prices, parking, merchandise, and everything else are going to go up a lot, or do you think it won't make much of a difference?

I just don't want to get priced out as a fan.

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Discussion Thread Incredibly significant deadline for this era of the franchise

I'll be honest I checked out on this season about a month and a half ago, after watching virtually every single game for the prior 5 seasons. However, this deadline presents an opportunity exciting enough to draw my interest again. If AJ actually concedes and chooses to sell, we could be looking at a big opportunity to retool and reopen a window. Could Mason Miller be used to get off Bogaerts contract? Musgrove? Cronenworth? Or just reload the system with multiple top 100 prospects? Then add in returns for King, France, Morejon, etc. We could be looking at the craziest offsaeason spree since 2015 (non-derogatory, just speaking in terms of excitement).

This is because new ownership has indicated a tolerance for increasing payroll. So on top of loads of new prospect capital, we will presumably be able to be big players in free agency. Mason Miller and co, could end up being Yordan Alvarez in our DH spot next season, for example. And a competent rotation. People are right to cringe at the thought of shipping out a special talent like mason, but if theres one thing the padres have proven in this preller era, its that we can snap our fingers and materialize an awesome closer. Miller came at the extremely steep cost of de vries, which may have been an overpay. but IMO he has only increased his value since joining us, despite losing a year of control. Even if we dont get an LDV replacement in the return, it will be somewhat close, id imagine.

The key in all of this is that Tatis has been able to figure it out lately, and Manny has been slugging. Those are two guys I never imagine will play for another team. Its too late for this year, but I think if we capitalize on this deadline we will be in a great spot come next year, if baseball is played in 2027
