AI

As everyone may have seen, we've been getting an influx of AI app/course posts over the past few months. I know I'm way behind in getting this out, but I feel I should state our stance on AI.

We do not want your apps. We do not want your shirts from a sketchy dropship site. We do not want your lazy attempts at wringing money from a forum.

Any posts like this, and any self promotional posts in general, will be removed. I know the people who need to read this most, will not care and will continue to post their slop. And we will continue to remove these posts as the pop up, as we have been doing. Thank you all for reporting these posts, as it helps us greatly. Please continue to do so, and we'll remove them as soon as we can.

Discussion I think I'm making every rookie night shift mistake possible

I'm new to nights, and every day feels like a science experiment. One shift I drink coffee too late and can't sleep when I get home. The next shift I skip it and spend an hour staring at my monitor wondering if blinking counts as exercise.

I'm curious what you wish someone had told you during your first few weeks on nights. I have a feeling I'm learning everything the hard way.

Help Does anyone struggle with getting home and being so tired that you waste hours?

I work 10pm-6am.

I wake up at around 6pm, chill out / do chores till 8pm, then get ready and set off for work at 9:15pm and get home at 6:30am.

The issue with my routine is that I get home and sit in my car till 7-8am. I'm autistic and really struggle with the work > home mindset, I can't just park up and go inside to sleep.

I'm usually sleeping at around 9-10am and waking at around 6pm, if I could get in and be asleep for 7am, I could wake up as early as 3pm giving me twice the time to chill, maybe even time for some games before work. That would genuinely change my life, I'd be alot less stressed.

How do I park up and go straight inside? I don't know how to describe the feeling but it's like my weight doubles and energy halves, it's almost impossible to move until I feel ready.

Is nightshift for me? Sleeping issues from stress.

Im thinking of applying for the night shift for a while.

Id work 3x10h from 9pm - 7am mostly.

Im a lonewolf, and while I like ppl, they drain me of all energy. This job would allow me to be basically alone as a monitor for someone sleeping. If they have a bad night, lots of work, if not, then its mostly chill. No bosses, no co workers etc. Which I suspect would be very energizing for me. I also know the job, so its very low stress for me.

The problem is, I have a super hard time to unwind. And I struggle with sleep alot if Im stressed, I get stuck in rumination loops. Further I cant nap during the day, its close to impossible, so Im worried I might have a problem sleeping after work.

I did some odd on site on call, a couple of years ago, but was taken advantage of, so each night, I got woken up alot. That led to me not sleeping at all cus I was so stressed about them sounding the alarm. When I got home from those shifts, I basically couldnt sleep at all, so just stayed awake until evening.

If Im alone for long periods of time, I will start gravitating towards sleeping at around 4am. But its still dark then, and I get to spend long hours winding down with tv shows and stuff.

Other than this, if I can get the sleep in, I feel it would be perfect for me. Low hours, low stress, low interaction. And I dont really have a social life anyways. Im hyper sensitive, so I tend to just isolate myself anyways. This would do wonders for my nervous system, If the nights dont fuck it up totally.

Oh, and also, I would prob try to keep the sleeping schedule some what consistent on off days to. Dialing bedtime back to 5am'ish. And I would prob just stop using an alarm, so I can just wake when I feel like it.

I guess non of you can really know, and this prob gets asked alot. But Im asking anyway. What do you think?

Story Perfect Neighbor

I live in a duplex and a family with small kids had been living next door to me but my bedroom didn't share a wall with them which was nice. But working a nightshift meant I always worried about what time I was cleaning house, or doing laundry, which the laundry room did share a wall with them. But we got along great and respected each other. Recently they moved out, and I was worried about who might be moving in next to me. But my landlord found the perfect tenant. A single guy, with no kids who also works night shift. Got to meet him today and we were both equally excited to have a neighbor who understood the unique lifestyle us night-shifters have. I just feel very fortunate. I hope all of you here who don't have the best living circumstances, finds one that also works great for you. It's rare, but possible.

Need a strong genuine reason to request a shift change in college (Evening → Morning)

Need a strong genuine reason to request a shift change in college (Evening → Morning)

Hi everyone,

I'm a first-year college student and I want to apply for a shift change from the evening shift to the morning shift.

The college asks for a valid reason, but I am preparing for Ca and my college won't change my shift because of that only.... and don't have any medical issues, family emergencies because those aren't true in my case.

Can anyone suggest genuine and convincing reasons that colleges are more likely to accept? I'm looking for reasons that are realistic and commonly approved.

If you've successfully changed your shift before, what reason did you give, and was your request accepted?

Thanks in advance!

3rd shift loneliness

38/m recently divored, wife left in December. Also recently switched to 3rd shift back in March. How does everyone deal with the debilitating loneliness? Im alone in a dark room all night, then go home to an empty house. Could also use some tips on how to meet people on this schedule. Having someone to talk to throughout the night would really help

Help How do you handle people not understanding your schedule?

Been working night shift for a while now, and honestly the hardest part isn't even the sleep itself — that's its own separate battle. It's feeling cut off from everyone around me. My family and friends are awake when I'm asleep, and I'm awake when they're asleep. Even when I try to explain it, someone always says "just go to bed earlier" like it's that simple.

Curious how you all deal with this. Has anyone found a system or routine that actually helped keep relationships intact with people on the opposite schedule?

Discussion My trainee has her first night alone tonight.

I'm worried about her. She is smart and competent, but it's her first night. So far she has only called me once to ask where something was. She sent a text about an a**hole customer, but she was just venting a bit while joking about him.

I'm sure she can handle it, but like a mother hen, I worry. I really like her, and she's a good fit for the store. I want her to hang around for a while.

Rant I actually have MORE energy during the night shift than I do any other shift.

I sleep during the day. My wife gets home at 5 and we spend a few hours together. Then as she goes to sleep around 9:30, I get ready and head off to work.

At other jobs I'd have to get up at 5 or 7 in the morning and had so much trouble getting up, and conversely, have so much trouble falling asleep. When I worked evenings, I'd stay up till 3am and sleep till 11 or noon. And I'd STILL have difficulty falling asleep.

Now? I work 11pm to 7am an hour away from my home. So 10pm to 11pm is my drive. 11pm to 7am is my shift, and I still have enough energy to get me home by 8am.

I've been doing this for two weeks now and I feel... Fine? Not really tired at night. Not really lethargic during my shift, I'm actually keeping myself awake really well while my co workers are dozing off.

Apparently I was built for this and I never knew.

Discussion unpopular opinion: night shift is actually better for introverts and i don't think day shift people realize how much social energy their schedule costs them

been on nights for ten months. introverted by nature. the two things turned out to work surprisingly well together in ways i didn't anticipate.

day shift runs on constant social performance. meetings, small talk, being visibly productive in front of people, navigating office energy for eight hours straight. i did it for years and came home drained in a way i just assumed was normal.

nights are quieter. smaller team. less performance, more just getting the work done. i come home tired from the work itself, not from managing how i come across to twenty people all day.

i'm not saying nights are easy. they're not. but the social cost is lower in a specific way that makes a real difference if you're someone who finds constant interaction exhausting.

nobody told me this before i switched. felt worth saying.
