Discussion Middle Earth SBG Questions Thread

Keep 'em coming

Edit: Stealth Mod announcement (I don't want to unpin the two pinned posts)

First, I have updated the rules to include something obvious to most longtime wargamers on reddit - posts asking or offering access to the rules is not allowed. Please do not ask for PDF's.

Second, no hate on 3D printing, but also do not come to this subreddit asking for STL proxies, or offering that. This may be too cautious of us, but I notice the reddit spam filter seems to remove any mention of STL's outright. So I figure I might as well make it a rule.

Finally, I have eased up the Spam filter from High to Low. Hopefully the redbubble spammers are still caught by this, without catching stray blogspot content creators. I've noticed the reddit algorithm taking down much more bycatch than usual, so we can experiment with a lower setting for now.

And as always, if you ever notice something astray with your own posts or someone elses, do not hesitate to message the mods.

Thanks everyone, -Tezerel

Took me several years before I even attempted to paint it, because I wanted to do it right. The original base had broken off when I assembled it a few years ago, hence the ruins.

Small Village on the Edge of Rohan

Post image

Recently, I have been really focused on making my wargaming boards more realistic by adding in more details like crates and barrels, farms, and foliage, so that rather than just looking like some scattered buildings, the table actually looks like a real village.

That’s what got me to put together the bundle, "The Borderlands of Saxonia." You can get all the STL files to make your own village in one click at a big discount. It’s only available for 24 more hours, so I wanted to make sure no one who is keen on it misses out.

Uruk-hai force with Lurtz painted up. I really enjoyed painting these guys in a simple and effective scheme to get them ready for the tabletop. I also put some autumn leaves on the basing to give them Amon Hen vibes 😁

Feel free to message me for any commission requests 😊

Hobby Assembly instructions

Where can I find assembly instructions for the Gondor avenger bolt thrower? I was gifted the unit but it didn’t come with instructions. I’m sure I could free ball it but I’m a building noob and would like to make sure I’m doing it right.

Starting the game

This question may be asked often, in every other wargame, but i wanna know how many books i have to buy and how to start my army. Im not entirely sure which army i want to play, but i want to know how the rules are and how lists are build, who can join who through what alliances, so i know what minis to buy. Do i need the core book plus lotr and hobbit book to know that? Can lotr armies olay against the hobbit? And can i really only play 10 models if i play for example nazgul of dol guldur (i have no clue, just heard it)? Theres a heap of rhings to know, and i want to get an overview (also in terms of price).

Hobby Here's my latest random FLGS haul :

So I went to a random airsoft shop in my area while looking for old minis to paint. The shop happened to have these old lotr sbg minis inside their OG blisters (alongside some 40k metal models, vostroyans I think that I didn't buy).

The owner told me that these old minis in their blisters hadn't sold well for a few years now and had been collecting dust. He told me that a random middle earth sbg fan would end up in the shop and buy some minis like once every few years. After some small talk, he told me that he wouldn't mind selling a number of (like half) these models at half price if I bought all of them and helped him get rid of it.

The prices were from around 12 to 21 euros for every blister, hence the letters on the boxs).

Ended up costing me a bit less than 300 euros (yeah kind of went nuts here but I hadn't bought minis in a while and I really wanted to have some vintage lads to paint).

Here's the list (number of blisters only, not counting the individual minis):

-2 khandish cheftain.

-2 khandish horsemen.

-1 haradrim chiefs on horse.

-1 dead marsh spectres.

-1 giant spiders.

-1 dain.

-2 "gondorian" bowmen.

-2 Bullroader Took.

-1 hobbit militia.

-1 cirion and madril.

-1 wood elf command.

-2 erkenbrand.

-1 theodred.

-10 Ugluk and Vrashku (planning on keeping 2 kits).

Do you think it was a reasonable deal overall from a collector's point of view (like the guys who like to keep their minis inside their og blister) ?

I'm planning on painting at least one of each anyways so it's more of a curiosity question (apart from 80% of the ugluk and vrashku blisters which I plan to sell and thus recoup some of my monetary losses).

Question How do you pick scenarios with picks and bans system?

Never done this and when i'm with my friends, just rolling has ended up with some ridiculously one sided matches.

Does one player roll for 3 pools, each ban one and then roll a d3 for the scenario? Or first roll all 3 scenarios and then ban?

Tactics Ugluk’s Scouts vs Monsters / Heroes

I’m bringing Ugluk’s scouts to my first MESBG tournament this weekend. Looking over the other lists, I can see a lot of monsters and figures with similar profiles (Ents, Troll Chieftains, Mumakil etc) along with higher tier heroes such as Sauron.

None of that’s really come up in the friendly games I’ve played, so I’d appreciate any advice you can offer on how best to deal with them?

I’m thinking the play against monsters might be to feed them an orc each turn (and shoot into combat, to hopefully kill him and shut down any hurl/heroic combat shenanigans)? But what do you do when the scenario requires you to kill them, rather than just trying to play around them?

Heres some shots of my mega terrain project, the Mines of Moria!

Its measuring in around 11x6 feet, mostly handmade from xps foam in 17 sections.

It follows the Fellowships path from West-gate to East-Gate.

LED and resin effects throughout.

Coming to ArdaCon 2026 exhibition!

(A lucky few will get to play a massive scenario on it!)

Army List Are these lists balanced for 250pt introductory games?

Thumbnail

Trying to introduce some of my friends to the game, I’ve come up with these lists based on what I have. For easterlings I have every model in their range, for Lurtzs scouts I have everything and for assault on helms deep I have everything except crossbows. Gondor I’m using proxies and so I don’t have any warriors with bows but I might use the garrison Of ithilien with faramir and some warriors some rangers instead? But my friend did say he loves the idea of the Shieldwall with ingold holding it together.

We “act” out some Rohan, Halls and Goblin Town player stereotypes. Hopefully can relate and hopefully not relate to some.
